"SAYS EAVESDROPPERS SELDOM HEAR GOOD," Toronto Star. March 14, 1934. Page 3. ---- Charging that Arthur Pugh, her landlord, had threatened her with the words. "I will get you," Mrs. Mary Gunn swore that the accused man had flourished his fist in front of her face, and on numerous occasions had uttered threats.
"But why did you not move out the premises since you state that you have been having trouble with this man for some time?" inquired Crown Attorney Malone.
"Because he demands that I payhim another month's rent before I leave." explained the witness. "I am trying to move out as fast as I can."
She added that she intended to vacate at the end of March and that she had her rent paid up to the end of February.
"He said he would do for me these were his exact words," stated the complainant. "And he also hit me and cut my face."
"Should have been an assault charge if that is correct," commented the crown.
"Did you hear Mrs. Gunn discussing your affairs or was this told you by someone else?" her worship demanded, when Pugh claimed that all the trouble arose when he rebuked his tenant for talking over his domestic affairs with others.
"I overheard it myself," he replied.
"Eavesdroppers rarely hear any good of themselves," the bench remarked
"I deny the accusations. I overheard her discussing my affairs and by the way I had no intention of overhearing anything." declared the accused in refuting the complaints of Mrs. Gunn whose testimony was supported by her daughters.
'Apparently you are taking a very high-handed attitude with these people which will not be allowed in this country," the crown told Pugh.
The bench placed a bond of $200 on Pugh to bind him to keep the peace for six months and instructed him to allow the complainants to move out whenever they desired.
"Is there any chance of appealing that?" inquired Pugh as he left the box.
"Guilty of Marrying" "I'm guilty of marrying him but I did not know I was doing wrong," replied Sarah M. Leviston, when asked to plead on a charge of bigamy. She was specifically accused of marrying Harry Carr on June 5, 1930, knowing that her first husband was living. She elected summary trial.
The 50-year-old woman sat weeping bitterly as the hearing proceeded.
The first witness called was George Leviston, the accused woman's first husband, who swore that he was married to the accused in mid-summer of of 1915, just before he left for overseas.
"Did she sign herself as a spinster at that time?" inquired the crown.
"She is illiterate and cannot read and write very well," responded the witness. "and she asked me to sign the papers for both of us."
He stated that he wished to be married before he left for the front "so that she would be provided for" and he said that she received the usual allowance during his term of service.
Returning to this country with the accused for 15 vears when Mrs. Leviston left him and went to Orangeville.
"Didn't you tell your wife that you had a wife in England," demanded defence counsel.
While declining to reply directly to the question. Leviston finally told the bench that he "could not recall ever having told her that."
Defence counsel drew admissions from Leviston that a daughter had been adopted, but he denied having signed the adoption papers for the accused representing her as his wife before they were married.
Thought Her a Widow "She told me she was a widow," declared Harry Carr, the man married to Mrs. Leviston in 1930. "She said that her husband had died overseas."
"And how did Leviston come into the arrangement?" inquired Attorney Malone, learning that the former witness were acquainted earlier.
"They represented him as a brother of the John Leviston who was supposed to have died over-seas." replied Carr.'
"Did you leave her?" "No. she left me-got up one night, turned in her key to the landlady and said she was through. A few days later she called up, and wanted to come back, but I would not let her. Then she tried to make me support her, but she never laid a charge."
In the relations between Leviston and the accused which he was not acquainted with prior to his marriage, he swore that the two always gave the impression that the woman's husband was Leviston's brother and was dead. The adopted daughter referred to accused as mother and Leviston as father, he added.
Discovery of the earlier marriage came when he sought information from parliament buildings.
"He told me that all men who came back left wives behind," testified Mrs. Leviston. stating that she had married Carr at his request and that she had loaned him money while she herself was working for$30 per month.
Mrs. Leviston declared that she had told Carr that she had"marriage that was not legal".
"I did not know what I was doing - no one told me." she said when Mr. Malone asked her if she was suggesting that the marriage wirh Leviston was not legal. "I never had a chance get an education when I was young and can't read and write." She stated several times that she was still "suspicious" of the wife Leviston suggested he had left in England.
"I will remand her for sentence until March 21 in custody and give her the benefit of every doubt," Magistrate Patterson ruled.
Was Mutual Mix-Up Counter charges of common assault against each other were laid by Frank Rinie and Mike Minka, Hungarians, the result of an alleged altercation in a Spadina Ave. barber shop when Minka sought to sell a paper published by the Hungarian workers to Rinie, who did not want the sheet.
"I knew he was working so I told him he ought to buy the paper," declared Minka through an interpreter, adding that he himself was not working.
"Was it a Communistic paper or supporting the Dollfuss side of things," Mr. Malone wished to know. Minka professed ignorance of these matters, but Rinie, speaking fair English, declared the other was an agitator and that he "told him he didn't want the paper."
Meeting at a later date the subject of the paper was again introduced by Minka, the second complainant, accused, swore and words led to blows.
Since neither of the men had apparently suffered noticeably and the assault was mutual, the bench placed both men under peace bonds of $50 with a warning from the crown to the subscription collector not to impose his paper where it was unwanted.
Charges "Gangster" Threat Angered by a quarrel which developed during the afternoon, and in which her husband was involved, Virginia Hayden went to the home of Charles Hemstead, King St.w.. threatened to "put the gangsters on to your trail unless you get out of town in 24 hours," and, finally, committed damage amounting to $20, declared Hemstead when he appeared against Mrs. Hayden, accused of malicious damage to property.
"We are partners," swore Hemstead, referring to the accused woman's husband. "and last Tuesday afternoon we had a quarrel. That night Mrs. Hayden came to my house and told me to get out of town. He repeated the gangster threat. "I told her to leave the house or I would call the police. She took her shoe off and hammered on the door. When I went out on to the veranda she threatened to shoot me with something under her coat, and then she picked up a cuspidor and hurled it through the window.
Denying the charge emphatically, Mrs. Hayden accused Hemstead of beating up her husband during the afternoon and swore that she had gone to the house to see what the trouble was.
"Mr. Hemstead said to me. 'If your husband doesn't pay the money he owes me I will beat him to a pulp, and if you don't get ---- out of this house I'll beat you the same way, " the accused woman swore.
"He pushed me out on to the veranda, and I kicked him. When he went to push me down the three steps I picked up something and threw it at him, but it missed and went through the window. He came at me again, so I looked for something else to throw at him, and it went, and I picked up something else to throw at him, and it went through the door. Then he said. 'You had better scram for I've called the police'."
She declared that she had waited for the police for several minutes, but that, finally, she had crossed to her car, which was standing with the engine still running. and that the enngine stalled just as the police reached the scene.
"You had no right to go there and interfere - the quarrel was between your husband and the other man," pointed out the crown.
"I'll never pay it. They will never eat any more steaks off me. I'm not guilty. I'll go to jail first." she declared when the court suggested payment of damages amounting to $20.
When the husband took the stand and stated that he was content to pay the amount, Mrs. Hayden interjected.
"I'm content that he will not pay it. I'll go down first," she declared. Magistrate Patterson imposed a fine of $10 and costs or 10 days, with orders to pay the $20, and despite the strenuous objections of his wife, Hayden paid the amount into court.
Remember Faces "Have you married since your last appearance here?" Magistrate Patterson asked Betty Royce, charged with vagrancy. "Your last appearance here was under the name of Betty Thompson."
The charge was withdrawn, but the bench told the girl that "honesty was the best policy." and that the court had a good memory for faces.
Orders Charge Withdrawn "You went to his apartment and interrupted his home life and I think he has a perfect right to make noise between those hours, "declared Magistrate Patterson, ordering a charge of assault laid against John Irwin upon the complaint of Harold Asaph, withdrawn.
Asaph stated that he had visited the accused man's apartment on an upper floor of a Harbord St. house at 9.45 pm. when the noise of children bothered he and his wife and he accused Irwin of striking him, and breaking his glasses in resentment. Counter charges were made verbally by Irwin, who declared that fellow members of the Asaph household had choked him during an altercation.
The bench interrupted to discharge the case on the grounds that the alleged noise had not been made between the hours of 10 pm. and 7 a.m. and was therefore not liable to complaint.

Skinner update per @TheChargingBUF:
Bob McKenzie on Jeff Skinner: “there’s been dialogue all week long between Skinner’s reps and Jason Botterill. The sense is there’s “optimism” but not to the point where either side is entirely comfortable w/ the numbers they’re exchanging. Expects more dialogue tomorrow.”
“Buffalo certainly wants him back and Skinner wants to come back. They have to get the final massaging of the numbers until both sides are happy.”
“It’s very close but it’s not done.”
“Sweet spot seems to be an 8 year deal between 8.5M - 9.5M AAV”

Intention Statement
                      -ON THE PATH-
On the Path, you ask? Simple, this is what will be required of myself if I plan to master this next endeavor. Over the next 12 months my goal is to gain an in-depth understanding for New Media Journalism and devise a plan to apply it to my life.
No one has ever heard the voice in the back of my mind saying, write something, tell that story, tell their story…
This voice has been speaking for years but I have never taken its advice, I think it’s about time to let it speak out loud.
Here is the initial steps for allowing it to be free, by no longer suppressing this internal passion for writing maybe I’ll finally embark on something I was meant to do.
Everyday is the goal, everyday write something even if the thoughts are leading nowhere just allow them to flow freely.
Planning, passion, persistence and patience will all be required if I want this to go somewhere and mean something.
At all times I will remain true to myself, always allowing the truth to speak even when I am hesitant or scared to do so. The work will always be the one to tell the story, I will always remain just the facilitator of the message.
The life I have is the only one I will ever get and if I do not take this risk to put myself out there and allow my true self to be heard then I will go to the grave holding onto a lie.
Here is my promise, a promise to myself that I continue to work on this craft or titled more appropriately calling with focus, conviction and grit until I have nothing more to say and nothing more to give.

“Can’t” isn’t in my vocabulary. I don’t believe in “can’t,” because the person who says “can’t,” really never “could,” and never “will”. Do what you say you’re going to do, because if you admit that you “can’t,” you’ve already failed. Find a way, no matter what! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #motivationalquotes #motivation #motivationmonday #payhim #sunrise #starsandstripes #getafterit #cantnevercould #avgeek #avporn #aviation #fly #flying #airplane #aircraftstudiodesign #redwhiteandblue #extra330 #aerobatics #pilot (at Leeward Air Ranch)
