Beer is becoming a bustling business in Northampton.

The opening of Progression Brewing this weekend marks the fourth brewery in the city, opening in the former home of Gleason's Camping Supply on Pearl Street. 

Founder Andrew Starkweather said, "One thing I loved about this space is I have fond childhood memories of buying my first camping gear here. So it's a very iconic location."

Starkweather, of Leverett, started out as a chef, originally founding Drew's organics in the nineties. 

But now Starkweather is in the brewing business, bringing "Hop Forward" IPA's to Pearl Street.

Progression Brewing has already released four new beers. There may be three other breweries in town, but Starkweather said there's a market for all of them.

"We've had almost all of the breweries locally come in and commend us," Starkweather said. "It's a very warm community. Seems to be a lot of room in the industry, especially if you're really trying to make great beer."

One South Hadley resident said having several local breweries in one city can be a big draw. 

"Especially craft beer, especially craft beer," Carolyn Sicbaldi said. "I think local is a big part of it, and when they can see where it's being made, it's a big draw for sure."

Progression Brewing is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Alistair made no more mention but the smile spreading across his face didn’t need any. Levy’s throat hurt and he exhaled, heavily, and let the earring drop to hang from his belt.

Her hands were heavy with necklaces thick with gems and rings carved from gold. Bracelets and earrings studded with pearls and every manner of the shiny things that drew a man’s eyes fell from her open palms into the bag held out in front of her. The merchant hefted it with an appreciative noise and Gwen’s hands were heavy with silver and copper. Not nearly the amount her jewelry was worth, but enough to get her a place on a ship.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Dakin Humane Society is making room for pets who were left homeless by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

Dozens of cats found new homes Friday at special adoption events at Dakin shelters in Springfield and Leverett. People were able to adopt cats for just $5.

Many animal shelters in the South are overloaded from the recent hurricanes. The folks at Dakin held Friday’s event to make room for the animals that cannot stay in the South.

Jeannie Fleury of Chicopee was one of those who wanted to bring a new cat into her home.

“They’re wonderful companions, and I��m just looking for a cat that will enjoy being in my home, and not want to go out,” Fleury said.

The event runs through 5:30 in Springfield and through 4:30 in Leverett.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – You can take a new friend home on Friday at the Dakin Humane Society’s $5 Feline Adoption Day.

More than a dozen cats will be up for adoption at the event as part of Petfinder’s “Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week.”

The Dakin Humane Society in Springfield will be opened on Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the evening.

The Leverett location will be opened from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
