SOUND ON🔊Reposted from @maestro320 - "A Million Conversations" - 🔵Maestro's Notes: 🔊🔊🔊 SOUND ON! This incredible footage was filmed on location off the Coast of San Benedicto Island, Archipielago de Revillagigedo courtesy of the Director of Pelagios Kakunja @pelagioskakunja , Marine Biologist, Dr Mauricio Hoyos Padilla @amaukua - False killer whales in Revillagigedo (June 2018, in San Benedicto)!!! The false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) is a large oceanic dolphin that inhabits oceans worldwide but mainly frequents tropical regions. It was first described in 1846 as a species of porpoise based on a skull, which was revised when the first carcasses were observed in 1861. The name "false killer whale" comes from the similar skull characteristics to the killer whale (Orcinus orca). Although there is considerable controversy regarding the absolute level of declines, there is good evidence of large-scale reductions in many predatory fish populations (e.g., Baum et al. 2003, 2005; Sibert et al. 2006; Polacheck 2006) and over-fishing and collapse of several important “prey” fish stocks world-wide (Jackson et al. 2001). The effects of such fish population reductions and subsequent ecosystem changes on world-wide populations of false killer whales are unknown but could result in population declines. The false killer whale is covered by the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS), and the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS). The species is further included in the Memorandum of Understanding Concerning the Conservation of the Manatee and Small Cetaceans of Western Africa and Macaronesia (Western African Aquatic Mammals MoU) and the Memorandum of Understanding for the Conservation of Cetaceans and Their Habitats in the Pacific Islands Region (Pacific Cetaceans MoU). - #Conservation #Education #Research #OceanOptimism🌊 #OneOceanGlobal🌏 #FalseKillerWhale #Pcrassidens #PelagiosKakunja #SanBenedictoIsland #ArchiepelagoDeRevillagigedo #Mexico #Pods #Communities #Earthlings🌏 #WeAreAllEarthlings🌏 #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/B2OUTjPgCD7/?igshid=1u0wrvzke82c5

Manta rays are such curious animals and apparently quite intelligent, having the biggest brains of any fish with specially developed areas for learning, problem solving and communication. One of my favourite sea creatures to dive with as is Andrea :-) Diver: @andreaasunsolo Photo: @williamwinram Photo: @williamwinram With: @watermenproject @pelagioskakunja @apneacity #freediving #apnea #oceanexploration #mindfulness #saltlife #onebreath #togetherbandofficial #explorersclub #underwater #diving #ocean #sea #beachlife #underwaterpics #motivation #instagood #photooftheday #instamood #sharkweek #sharks #greathammerheadshark https://www.instagram.com/p/B1wvYNZigqq/?igshid=1r3m2wtx18f8h

Shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) can be found in every ocean on the planet. They are highly migratory sharks that on average move around approximately 3,400 km or 2,130 miles every year (IUCN Cailliet et al. 2009). In order to move so frequently and so far, this species of shark had to evolve to swim as efficiently as possible. Shortfin makos do this by staying close to the surface of the water during the day, heating their bodies to keep their muscles warm and they can ride oceanic currents to move farther distances with less effort. They also swim in a pattern using quick tail movements to propel forward and then allow themselves to glide for a ways with minimal tail movement (Kimley et al. 2002). These short bursts of energy with long rest periods are quite effective in using less energy than constant swimming would. A fun fact about makos is that they are the fastest shark in the world and one of the fastest fish species with top bursts at around 45 mph (IUCN Cailliet et al. 2009). We don’t normally see makos on Oahu but because they are so highly migratory and can be found in oceans worldwide, there is always the chance for one to drop in on one of our dives!  Post by @clairestrand Photo by @kikomasca of @pelagioskakunja ____________ Want to learn more about sharks or adoption visit our website: OneOceanDiving.com & JOIN US in the water in #Hawaii on #Oahu’s #NorthShore to #SwimWithSharks and #DiveWithSharksInHawaii with a @OneOceanDiving trained #MarineBiologist / #SharkSafetyDiver Check out our #Shark and #MarineResearch @OneOceanResearch and our outreach program @OneOceanEducation #LearnAboutSharks and our Non-Profit @WaterInspired conservation group and Founders: @Juansharks and @oceanramsey Want to join the team? Posted @withregram • @williamwinram Can you see what (or who) the shark is looking at in the upper right area of the photo? Some potential prey was poking fun at the #greatwhiteshark from a distance which did peak the sharks curiosity but not anymore than a casual swim over to take a closer look. We did not get to view a predation as either the shark was well fed or just felt it had limited chance in catching the sea lion so did not invest the energy. This really is breaking me 💔😢...So sad 😞 Posted @withregram • @williamwinram My thoughts: Although this is clear proof there are still #greatwhitesharks in the Mediterranean Sea it is really sad that they are being hunted. Moreover, if there is no education and/or no serious repercussions for those killing them then the “protections” granted these apex predators have little more value than the paper they are printed on… We need to educate people on the importance of these creatures to a level where they will protect them instead of fishing them. Repost from The MECO Project on Facebook… A big shark was photographed this week at a local fish monger in Greece. The dead shark is a young Great White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias, one of the most iconic animals of our oceans and the world’s largest known predatory fish. Great whites are rare in the Mediterranean sea and are protected under the Barcelona convention therefor shall not be retained on board, let alone offered for sale. Currently, their Mediterranean population is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to the dramatic decline of its population in the last 50 years that varies from 52% to up to 96% in some regions. Unfortunately, contemporary narratives widely presented by the media, have attached an utterly negative connotation to this fascinating species, propagating a fabricated image of them as implacable and voracious predators. "A Million Conversations" - 🔵@maestro320 's Notes: 🔊🔊🔊 SOUND ON! The false killer whale has been known to interact non-aggressively with several dolphin species: the bottlenose dolphin, the pacific white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens), the rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis), the pilot whales, the melon-headed whale, the pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), the pygmy killer whale, and Risso's dolphin. The false killer whale may respond to distress calls and protect other species from predators, aid in childbirth by helping to remove the afterbirth, and has been known to interact sexually with bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales, including homosexually. It has been known to form mixed-species pods with those dolphins, probably due to shared feeding grounds. In Japan, these only occur in winter, suggesting it is tied to seasonal food shortages. A pod near Chile had a 15 km/h (9.3 mph) cruising speed, and false killer whales in captivity were recorded to have a maximum speed of 26.9–28.8 km/h (16.7–17.9 mph), similar to the bottlenose dolphin. Diving behavior is not well recorded, but one individual near Japan dove for 12 minutes to a depth of 230 m (750 ft). In Japan, one individual had a documented dive of 600 m (2,000 ft), and one in Hawaii 927.5 m (3,043 ft), comparable to pilot whales and other similarly-sized dolphins. Its maximum dive time is likely 18.5 minutes. (Caption continued in the comments section below @maestro320 acc) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_iPTUinbTc/?igshid=1kypk96ya4ev3

Post via ✅ @williamwinram Nothing goes to waste in the sea. Read below about this “whale fall” found of the central California coast. Repost: @nautiluslive Found Via: @the_barefootwalker Whale look what we have here! During the final dive of this year’s Nautilus expedition season, our team discovered a whale fall while exploring Davidson Seamount off central California’s coast with researchers from Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The skeletal remains of this relatively recent fall are of a baleen whale estimated to be 4-5 meters long, and the team is working to identify the species. The site exhibits an interesting mid-stage of ecological succession, as both large scavengers like eel pouts and octopus are still stripping the skeleton of blubber, and bone-eating Osedax worms are starting to dissolve the bones. #nautiluslive @mbnms @sanc #marineprotectedarea #nocage #freediving #apnea #oceanexploration #mindfulness #saltlife #onebreath #togetherbandofficial #explorersclub #underwater #diving #ocean #sea #beachlife #underwaterpics #motivation #instagood #photooftheday #instamood #sharkweek @togetherbandofficial @the_explorers_club @explorersclubswitzerland @watermenproject @pelagioskakunja @somertonsportingclub @nywildfilmfest @blueoceanwatch https://www.instagram.com/p/B4CLN0ZhHv7/?igshid=rnlepqy2g3l8
