Pendergast Series (Preston & Child) playlist
Playlists are my passion, so I thought I'd put together a small one with descriptions of why I picked every song.
Terrible Thing, AG - this one reminds me in general of Aloysius. The heavy instrumentals and the melancholic longing lyrics are reminiscent to me of his character, as seen by others in universe - dark and cold yet oddly magnetizing and enticing.
Killer, The Hoosiers - seeing as this one is from the POV of a killer, this reminds of me of the general vibes of the books - particularly City of Endless Night and The Cabinet of Curiosities.
Take Me Out, Scissor Sisters - I prefer this cover to the original, although that one is superb as well. Also matches the general vibe of the series - this one reminds me of the Diogenes trilogy books.
Wolf Like Me, TV On The Radio - I don't remember on whose blog I read that they associate Still Life With Crows with TV On The Radio's songs, but I agree so much! This song especially reminds me of the aesthetics of that book in particular.
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Paul Simon - this one reminds me of all the romances in the book as they tend to either be short-lived or on-off for a long time.
Dracula Teeth, The Last Shadow Puppets - atmosphere of the later books - Verses for the Dead and City of Endless Nights in particular with the silky smooth vocals and big city vibes.
Smooth Operator, Sade - ever since it was mentioned in the Cabinet of Curiosities, it became a series theme song for me.
Dangerous, Son Lux - dark cerebral lyrics click so well with the feeling of the books to me and the beautiful string melody peppered in makes this song so cinematic.
Stand By Me, Ki:Theory - Helen trilogy soundtrack for me. Trailer-style remixes of old songs are my guilty pleasure and this one reminds me of Pendergast/Helen romance so much.

THE SCORPION’S TAIL By Preston & Child Grand Central Publishing 401 pgs
This is the second thriller in the Special Agent Pendergast spin-off series starring two of his best supporting characters. The first being Archeologist Nora Kelly who was around from the first Pendergast adventure teaming up with his young protégé, newly minted FBI Agent Corrie Swanson. Though why the publisher opts to label this the “Nora Kelly” series is beyond my logic. It really should be the “Kelly – Swanson” series. Oh well, the eccentricities of publishers.
Like the first, this one also focuses on historical mysteries with these set in the western state of New Mexico. A young, extremely likeable town Sheriff named Homer Watts encounters a would-be looter at work in a high mountain ghost town. When he confronts the fellow, the perp tries to shoot him. Much to his dismay as Watts is a fast draw crack shot and wounds the varmint. But that isn’t what sets alarms off. Rather it is the fact that the two-bit artifact thief was in process of uncovering a dead body; a dead body buried on government land. Enter the FBI and Agent Corrine Swanson.
Realizing the excavation of a body is beyond her considerable expertise, Corrie recruits Nora Kelly to assist her and pretty soon the trained archeologist finds herself pulled into the mystery. Not only is the corpse weirdly mummified, but in his possession is an ornate, bejeweled cross that dates back to the days of the Spanish conquistadores. Could the dead man have been hunting lost Spanish gold mines rumored to be hidden in those mountains? And what connection does the dead man have to the White Plains Desert Military base; home to the first atom bomb test?
Once again, Preston and Child weave an intricate, pretzel-twisty plot that mushrooms multiple new questions whenever one is answered. Enough to keep both Nora and Corrie hopping back and forth from one end of the state to the other looking to solve not one, but several historical puzzles all seemingly intertwined. Along the way, they encounter some truly colorful Western characters ala Sheriff Watts and a descendant of Geronimo. In the end, “The Scorpion’s Tale” is another grand Preston & Child outing and one we heartily recommend. Kelly and Swanson may not be Pendergast, but they sure are the next best thing

Bloodless - Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child (Pendergast, book 20)
Synopsis
In this latest installment of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, FBI agent Pendergast faces the strangest, most challenging puzzle of his career, when bodies—drained to the last drop of blood—begin appearing in Savannah, Georgia.
A FABULOUS HEIST On the evening of November 24, 1971, D. B. Cooper hijacked Flight 305—Portland to Seattle—with a fake bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and then parachuted from the rear of the plane, disappearing into the night…and into history.
A BRUTAL CRIME STEEPED IN LEGEND AND MALEVOLENCE Fifty years later, Agent Pendergast takes on a bizarre and gruesome case: in the ghost-haunted city of Savannah, Georgia, bodies are found with no blood left in their veins—sowing panic and reviving whispered tales of the infamous Savannah Vampire.
A CASE LIKE NO OTHER As the mystery rises along with the body count, Pendergast and his partner, Agent Coldmoon, race to understand how—or if—these murders are connected to the only unsolved skyjacking in American history. Together, they uncover not just the answer…but an unearthly evil beyond all imagining.
My Thoughts
As with every Prendergast mystery, we start off with intrigue. But what really caught my attention with Bloodless is that we start far before the beginning of the case with an infamous mystery – the tale of D. B. Cooper. By now, we all know my passion for true crime. And I couldn’t wait to figure out just how this unsolved mystery would tie into our mysterious murders in Savannah, Georgia.
As usual, we go through twists and turns at a bit of a maddening pace. The pieces of the puzzle take a bit of a roundabout way before fitting together to create a full picture. And, as per usual, at the heart of it all is Pendergast with his riddles, and the, quite frankly, mystifying way his mind works.
I love watching Pendergast work his magic. It’s riveting, and, I’m not gonna lie, I get a little bit of petty gleefulness when he runs circles around people who try to thwart him, or otherwise try to throw their weight around. And while his partner, Coldmoon, could probably go with never seeing Pendergast ever again, he’s a really fantastic counterpart to Pendergast’s rather eccentric methods.
With all that said, I could never have predicted where this story would take us. One revelation after another, I kept repeating to myself: “No, there’s not fucking way”. And every time, I was mistaken. There was a fucking way, apparently.
I’m used to these books taking the strangest of strange turns. I’m used to having to suspend my understanding what is possible, and what is reality. But this one. This one really, really went above and beyond. And I honestly have no idea how we’re going next, or what could possibly happen.
Honestly, as much as I adore this series, and these characters, this might have gone just one step too far for me. And that’s saying something, coming from me.

Look how beautiful this art is for Tested!!!!
Dani Pendergast is amazing, and really captured a series that is very hard to do well and with sensitivity. I'll be honest I was nervous about doing art for each episode because this topic is SO easy to fuckup. But I'm incredibly pleased with these illustrations.
You can listen to Tested here.

bad news gang I just finished Court of Wanderers and I did not love it :')
Here's my ranty review post for details. Spoilers are tagged, but I only recommend reading it if you're done with it or have no plans to read it.
I might post more using the tag 'court of wanderers spoilers', in case you want to block/avoid that.
