A Little Oathbound Symbolism (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)

Hey y’all!  If you’ve read Oathbound, how is everyone feeling tonight?!  If you are like me, you probably needed several mental health support breaks to cope with the yearning, reverence, heart-stopping terror, and that ending.  I loved the third installment of the series and especially enjoyed the new batch of symbolism Tracy poured into the pages.  That being said, let’s get into it! But first, some definitions and happenings.

Penumbra - a space of partial illumination (as in an eclipse) between the perfect shadow on all sides and the full light.  It is often described as a grey area. Shout out @medium-bloodcrafter-scion

In April 2024, there was a solar eclipse (the first I have ever seen). In 2025 there have been two lunar eclipses and in February a parade of planets was visible in the night sky.  A rare celestial event that won’t show itself again until 2040.

 Light and Dark (Shadows)

“Shadows are birthed from both light and darkness, Briana Matthews.”

Erebus says this to Briana after a particularly cruel training session.  This series has played with duality from the beginning, and I love this turn of phrasing. No one is who they say or think they are (whether they are aware of it or not).  We, as readers, are left to ponder what the shadows may mean in and for a character.  When Erebus takes the chunk of Bree’s soul, the people she loves become a “Shapeless gray mass bathed in mist.”

“I am not a shadow.”  I shake my head.  “Take me back.”

Oh, but you are Bree. The parallels with the light and the dark with each of the boys mirror both sides of who Bree is.  In Bloodmarked we get Sel saying, “I am not born of shadows!” and when Bree is being pursued by Merlin in the dreamscape, she proclaims, “I am not shadowborn!”  After Merlin’s “There you are, little Cysgod.”

The Moon

In my reading, I found it intriguing that the moon is a feminine symbol representing immortality, enlightenment, eternity, and the dark side of nature.  The moon’s gravitational pull controls the earth’s tides (Nick and the water references associated with him) and determines the length of our days and our seasons.  It reflects inner knowledge and the realm between the conscious and unconscious.  It is a symbol of the soul (Otherworld). It reflects light.  Selwyn embodies these traits so effortlessly, just look at the pull he has had on the fandom.  Epic.

“The clouds shift overhead to reveal a bright crescent moon hanging low in the sky.”

A crescent moon can symbolize a transition from one phase to another, a transformation.  In the scene where Selwyn finally catches up to Bree and Nick, this is the moon described in the sky.  As we know, Selwyn is headed for his new destiny. He has transitioned (quite literally in death) to his new form, his more eternal state of being, the Prince of Shadows.  I believe that, going forward, this will be a period of growth, release, and change for Selly.

The Sun

“Nicholas Davis and Selwyn Kane. The sun and the moon. You are warmth and the light, and I am the bitter deep cold…”

I love this scene so much because it is a culmination of heartbreak and confession between both boys.  It also shows how they see each other through the lens of everyone else but are slowly coming to the place where they truly see each other. 

The sun is life, quite literally.  A masculine symbol of divinity, enlightenment, and order that sustains life and lights the way for spiritual illumination.  The sun represents the cycle of life with its rising (birth), its journey across the sky (life/living), and its setting (death/rebirth).  It follows the soul’s journey.  It is a catalyst for change and lights the way for enlightenment and self-discovery (Bree’s quest and his). 

“Your supremacy,” Nick says, brows tight.  “Your misogyny. Your racism. Your cowardice.  I only state out loud that which you enact in plain sight.  That which we can all see, if we can stand to bear witness.”  Nick seethes.  “Will you punish me for doing so?  Your chosen son?”

The sun is also a symbol of authority and hope.  Throughout this series, Nick is seen as the chosen one.  The golden boy who will lead the Legendborn valiantly into battle.  The way he uses his light to fight for a more righteous cause is masterful.  He illuminates all the ways the Order and the Regents are evil.  He casts light on all of the dark places they would like to remain hidden.  

Solar Eclipse

“Sel blurs in front of him in a blink, eyes flashing up at the taller boy.  He bares his fangs, words spiking between them with a hiss.” 

Tracy rarely misses an opportunity to show us the size difference between the boys.  Nick eclipses Sel’s form every time (he does this with everyone, really).  Across time, solar eclipses have been seen as a gateway for transformation and renewal.  The sun’s light is obscured, opening the door for revelation and insight.  It is described as a cosmic dance that shows its interconnectedness with all things, inviting change and bringing individuals to their highest selves. Nick and Sel are doing that dance in this scene.  While there is much to still discuss, these two cosmic forces align, one casting a shadow and the other illuminating the dark places. 

The Center of The Universe - Bree Matthews

“A soul like yours is something to kill and die for, Briana Matthews.  Your soul is the engine behind the power that could change the world.  Unparalleled, in this dimension or the next.  Beyond priceless…”

Valec says this with pure reverence and passion (with a hint of rage).  In this series, Bree is the center, the plan, and the action, and she inspires everyone around her to be their highest selves.  In relation to the boys, they are both sides of her, the light and the dark, the sun and the moon.  She is their world.  Earth is described as the cosmic cradle where life begins and thrives.  The minute Sel and Nick meet Bree, their trajectory changes.  Their destinies become something more.  Mother Earth is power, nurturing its inhabitants. 

“Honey wine. Amber.  Green things growing.  The tiniest hint of copper, like fresh blood.  Something else…” A deep inhale, and I feel him shudder.  “Power.” 

Earth is the concrete physical reality in which we all live.  It is this reality that Bree brought with her the minute she stepped on campus. Earth represents the balance of yin and yang (our sun and moon).  It ushers in harmony.  

“Epiphyllum oxypetalum.”  Hazel’s eyes have gone teary.  “More commonly known as queen of the night.  These flowers require regular sunlight to flourish and yet they only bloom in darkness, only one night a year…”  

“These flowers take faith, Bree.  Even when we can’t see their progress, even when we forget they’re growing, they bloom.  And they are worth the wait.” 

Hazel’s words could not be more impactful.  Much like this flower, Bree needed Nick’s warmth, his light, to flourish.  She needed his safety and protection to rest and meet the task she faced.  To bloom, she needed Sel.  He carried her through the dark places (literally and figuratively) to help her be her best self.  To help her flourish.  She is now giving that to both boys.  

King shit indeed.

Book three was so rich with themes and motifs.  I could not get enough!  Let me know your thoughts, I’d love to hear them!

8+8+8 Silmarillion Fic Recs 2024!

I was inspired by @sallysavestheday and @polutrope's recs to revisit some of the Silmarillion fandom fics I read and loved in 2024, arranged in lists of 8 long fics, 8 short fics, and 8 bite-size fics that made my year delightful. With plenty of things still on the TBR, I figured I would nonetheless share a few faves!

Longer fics

Penumbra by @imakemywings (Maedhros/Thingol, M, 18k)

Maedhros presents himself as a diplomatic guest to Doriath, certain he can convince the king to do as Maedhros wishes him to if he only had the chance. It is possible Maedhros is less than prepared for Doriath than he expected.

This is the kind of longer fic that feels so beautifully fleshed out and lived-in to read. Thingol characterization here is INCREDIBLE as is the slow build court romance, political dynamics, and light mentor/mentee. So key to my conception of this amazing ship.

naught green upon the oak series by @welcomingdisaster (Maedhros/Maglor, E, 37k)

Maglor returns from the Bragollach. Or someone returns, anyhow.

I love this Gothic widower Maedhros so much. This CoH-inspired Maedhros/Maglor (in which much is being compartmentalized) is so dreamlike to read. Himring feels like a house in a fairytale, Maglor its lost princess. Also, really sexy.

Mélamar by @buds-of-marjoram (Maedhros/Maglor, E, 40k)

Nelyafinwë doesn't have the sight, yet his dreams are filled with blood, fire and screams. Even in the peace of Valimar.

Please imagine a world where Maedhros foresees the dreadful events and moral spiral of Silm in advance, shares his misgivings with Maglor, and then the tragedy is averted by their close bond and increasingly public D/s relationship as Maedhros takes the reins of politics in Valinor to arrange the pieces on the board differently than in canon. This lavish, sexy fic brings me SO much joy.

What Blooms on Ard-Galen in the Springtime by @jouissants (Maedhros/Maglor, E, 8k)

The grasses and flowers sleep beneath a blanket of white feet thick. When spring comes and Maglor walks among them again, all will be different.

I could not resist the chance to rec Maglor lady-lord of Himring of my heart. This accidental pregnancy AU is so gorgeous and tender. Maglor doubting Maedhros' valuing of him and then it being so plainly affirmed and reaffirmed heals me. Please also read jouissants' absolutely epic postcanon Strange Currencies, which I can't say enough about!!

The Worst Are Full of Passionate Intensity by steadfastalysanne2022 / @last-capy-hupping (Thuringwethil/Ungoliant, E, 7k)

In which Ungoliant comes to Middle Earth, nearly slays Morgoth, and recruits a new servant within a week.

This is so incredibly hot and unhinged and such a gift to fandom femslash. Thuringwethil attracted to power and enmeshed in its hierarchies, served by others and seeking someone worthier/worthiest to serve herself, then biting off way more than she can chew with Ungoliant, is all just so good. Reading it for the first time made like my whole week.

And Love Grew by @polutrope (Maglor & Elrond & Elros, T, 23k)

As a host of survivors makes the journey from Sirion to Amon Ereb under Maglor's leadership, old bonds unravel and loyalties crumble. But from the scraps and ruins, new and unlikely bonds take shape. A story of perseverance through suffering.

This is written in such a classic and considered style--it's beautiful canonverse feelings and atmosphere. I love this story's grim yet so expressive tragic hero Maglor and very bleak (hurting me) leader Maedhros.

Kiss and Marry by @thecoolblackwaves (Celegorm/Curufin, M, 4k chapter fic)

Curvo and Tyelko get married. What could possibly go wrong with these two together?

Curufin thinks carefully and chooses a spouse: who better than Celegorm? This is such good crackfic, it had me cackling aloud to read. This isn't a ship I usually have a lot of feelings about, but the marriage premise and the hilarity/sincerity of it all really made it for me.

Laurë by Huiniel (Glaurung/Maglor, Fingon/Maedhros/Maglor, E, 29k)

Glaurung takes Maglor captive, hypnotizes him, and fucks him on a pile of gold. That's all I have.

(I love this summary, which I read via googletranslate, along with the rest of the fic--it's originally in Russian if you prefer to read in the original!) I can't not mention this fic, updates of which have been such a prominent (and thrilling) feature of my 2024 reading experience. Maglor is rescued from Glaurung's clutches, but he isn't the same as he was before. I love the dynamics between Maglor and Maedhros and Maglor and his other brothers and the angst and smut of it all.

Shorter fics

one whole with my other by @i-am-a-lonely-visitor (Míriel/Indis, E, 4k)

“Indis-i-Noldóran,” spoke the Maia through a mouthful of rain. “I bear news of one who will return to your house.”

God... god. So poetic and beautifully written, so tender and sexy. This fic makes me cry every time I reread it. I love arranged marriage setups and this story, with newly and vividly alive Míriel returned to a lonely, proud, and noble Indis in a reconfiguration of the Finwë-Míriel-Indis relationship/Statute, is such a beautiful take on them.

The Patience of the Oak by @imakemywings (Galadriel/Melian, G, 3k)

Galadriel is determined to show Melian she is capable of more than Melian believes. Melian wonders if her pupil grasps her lessons.

This is just incredible--so poetically written, so magical and atmospheric. The power dynamics and mentorship and osanwë are amazing and Melian's vast and eerie presence are peak weird Maiar. Young, reckless, proud Galadriel is captured perfectly. Also, one of the sexiest G-rated fics out there.

To Wear a Heart So White by Tilion / @tilion-writes (Maedhros & Maglor, T, 2k)

“Will all great Ulmo’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?” Maglor whispered hoarsely. “No, this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green one red.” “My hands are of your color,” Maedhros growled, “but I shame to wear a heart so white.”

Maedhros and Maglor at Sirion, and dialogue from Macbeth. I've been captivated by this ever since I read it. Each line is so well-placed and the dynamic between them sings. I love the way this concept is used to express the canon violence and tragedy of it all, too.

Banked Fires Blaze by Chestnut_pod (Aerin & Fire Pot; Aerin/Brodda, T, 2k)

What is it to be made for a kinder world?

This fic is SO creative and brilliant--telling Aerin's story and the burning of Brodda's hall as part of a longer folktale/myth about women and hearths and Brodda's people and the coming Dagor Dagorath. I really love examinations of non-normative/human/"bad" traditions and cultures in Tolkien and I was blown away by this portrait of a different kind of Silmarillion myth!

Proxy by @aipilosse (Celegorm/Celebrimbor, E, 3k)

Celegorm's nephew seeks him out one evening in Nargothrond. Celegorm is playing king, but Celebrimbor's game is less clear.

This is so juicy and gendery--masc transmasc Celegorm comparing Celebrimbor to Lúthien. Celegorm leaning further and further into playing the villain and Celebrimbor struggling with the family's deeds, the break between them imminent, makes for such a good dynamic. Dark and sexy and fraught!!

the ways of birds by @welcomingdisaster (Maglor & Maedhros, T, 4k)

When Maglor is captured in the aftermath of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, he doesn't expect a rescue.

Whump in the venerable whumpfic tradition and honestly so formative to me. I love how gritty this is and how vividly I can picture the wretched goblin march through the landscape. I LOVE Maedhros rejecting political expediency and rejecting pragmatism to save Maglor.

My Son by @polutrope (Fëanor/Maglor, E, 3k)

“Father, I assure you: it is nothing. I would choose you a thousand times before any husband. Ever would I choose my own blood before that of a stranger.” After his exile to Formenos, Feanor locks himself in the vault with the Silmarils. Makalaure goes to him.

This is such an eerie and beautiful dark fairytale. With how entwined the Feanorians all are by the Oath and their loyalty to Fëanor, this relationship makes only too much sense in this story. I love Maglor's desire and the gender and selfhood of it all, and how unsettling and selfish Fëanor's taking possession of him is.

Maglor struggles to give up control. Maedhros makes sure that he learns.

MY SILMSMUTEXCHANGE GIFT!! Himring Maedhros + osanwë lifestyle BDSM + Gap Maglor. This builds deliciously--it is sooo sexy. Maglor's loyalty and Maglor struggling to accept Maedhros' authority--but needing it, it settling his guilt and unease--are fantastic. One of the hottest unhinged Maedhroses I have read. I love the way his presence looms in Maglor's mind even in his absence and how convinced he is that he has Maglor's best interests at heart.

+ 1 extra: Forbidden Prey by @whovianofmidgard (Celegorm/Maglor, M, 3k)

Celegorm doesn't know that he is attracted to his older brother, Maglor. He ends up pushing him away, while searching for Maglor's traits in his other potential loves.

I have to mention this fic because I simply enjoyed reading it SO much. I love a feminine Maglor and a Celegorm who wants Maglor and is taking that out on him. The hints of background Maedhros/Maglor, Celegorm's jealousy and obsession, and the way this spirals into Celegorm's attraction to Lúthien are all just catnip to my brain.

Really short fics (under or around 1k)

The Fortress by TheLegendCreator (Himring & Maedhros, G, ~500 words)

A Dwarf visits Tol Himling and wonders about the craftsmanship. He listens to the stone-song, and it tells him the tale of an Elf-lord that wove his heart into stone.

I love the mythic/fairytale vibes of this--the way Himring's stones remember Maedhros, and the dwarven OC is chilled hearing his tale. It strongly evokes to me the "deep they delved us, fair they wrought us" memory and history of Tolkien's ruins and landscapes.

Pengolodh meets a kindred spirit in the market square at the Havens of Sirion.

This is so bittersweet--the humble but bustling life of Sirion before the kinslaying and the mutual recognition of these two historians and tellers of tales. Knowing what's to come makes their brief connection and Pengolodh's resolution to share his feelings hit all the harder. You get the feeling that he never gets the chance to.

One Thousand Days by @melestasflight (Uldor & Maedhros, T, ~800 words)

Uldor has spent one thousand days carefully observing the Lord of Himring. Because everyone has a weakness, and Maedhros’ weakness lies in the West.

I just love the POV switch here on Tolkien's "villainous" peoples, the way this story makes Uldor's betrayal seem not only compelling but reasonable from his perspective. The arrogant preoccupation of Elves with other Elves, the rumors of the kinslayings, Uldor's dying curse flung at Maglor.... all so good.

Fire by @buds-of-marjoram (Maedhros/Maglor, M, ~300 words)

My brother came back; an inferno.

This brief ficlet is so evocative and so sensual. I love the BDSM dynamic here and the Maglor POV of Maedhros--the way Maedhros has changed, become cruel even, but they adore each other and are completely entwined.

Let the water hold me down by BloodwingBlackbird (Daeron/Melian, E, ~900 words)

Daeron and Melian and songs.

Melian captivates Daeron and Daeron gives himself and his music over to her as her conduit. An absolutely incredible eerie, otherworldly Melian and the patron/artist dynamic is so sexy. Daeron's juxtaposed with Maglor--who can't understand what he shares with Melian and can't decide whether to pity or envy him for his queen's patronage. So vividly and poetically written. My Innumerable Stars gift!!

crowns and other trinkets by @thelordofgifs (Maedhros & Maglor, G, 1.4k)

In the years of Maedhros’ captivity Maglor would indulge himself, sometimes, and open the chest, and admire the treasure within as though he were yet a fanciful child trying on his brother’s baubles; and he would tell himself that he would hear Maedhros’ laughing voice at the door any moment now, saying, Are you going through my things again, little magpie? Before the Mereth Aderthad, Maedhros and Maglor sort through some jewellery.

I always adore Maglor haunted by guilt from his "kingship" and this scene brings so much of that for me in subtle ways. I love Maedhros' attention to Maglor, the way he wants to foist adornments on him, and the way the pieces of jewelry link past and present, bringing younger and happier moments into the room in bleak Beleriand where they must decide which of their few things to part with. Hints of Celegorm being cruel and accusatory to Maglor during Maedhros' captivity are the cherry on top for me.

Maedhros and Maglor, home at the end of the world.

Out of so many amazing fics and amazing Maedhros/Maglor fics from jouissants this year I struggled to pick what to put on this list but it had to include this one--so comforting and tender, I've reread it so many times. I LOVE this weary canon divergence Maedhros--how determined he is to love Maglor well despite everything, to stay with him, to not choose death--how he's deeply satisfied by Maglor's small comforts, too, despite things not being easy and their life being so humble. Maglor pregnancy literally can fix them I believe it.

Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die. After the Ruin of Doriath, Celegorm has some fun with his prize. Dior would like to get off this ride.

This is like the best evil "tender"(-ish) noncon ever. Celegorm/Dior is such a good ship all the time but especially when Celegorm gets the chance to be horrific and to take out his thwarted attraction for Lúthien on Dior. This brilliantly crafted smut is bringing it all. Go read it...

actively right now, just narnia. previously in descending order, as best as i can remember because i've been doing this 15+ years at this point: stranger things, the karate kid/cobra kai, lockwood & co, beyonders, the copernicus legacy, fnaf, national treasure, the shazam! movies, superman & lois, ginger snaps, resident evil, arcane, the batman 2022, star wars (jedi apprentice era mostly), a fandom that shall not be named (iykyk), the penumbra podcast, the magnus archives, bnha, voltron, miraculous ladybug, moulin rouge, warrior cats, my little pony, doctor who, disney/dreamworks (rotbtfd and frozen specifically), h*rry p*tter when i was a kid unfortunately, maximum ride, the mcu, the 39 clues, and of course, lord of the rings.

as a bonus, ones i have written but never finished include the man from snowy river (1982), the IT movies, bendy and the ink machine, fablehaven, the lunar chronicles, five kingdoms, keeper of the lost cities, oz, and atla.

only doing ones visible on my ao3 for this because i despise all the anon ones that are my top five: paper faces (fnaf), harm's way (stranger things), (dental) care (bnha), pyrrhic victory (shazam) and please don't hold me to it (stranger things).

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

i try to! i don't often end up responding to every single one because it takes a lot of energy on my part, but especially if someone leaves a nice one that points out something specific they appreciated or noticed i like to try to respond and elaborate on it a little for funsies :) i try to let people know their comments are appreciated because maybe the positive reinforcement will spread the practice of commenting even more.

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

probably still greek tragedy aka my batman 2022 fic where i just fuckin killed that guy (batman). i usually tend towards fixits so i think the only other fic that doesn't have any kind of hopeful hint at the end i wrote would be like. close encounters. but that's part of a fixit series? which is why i don't count good luck, babe! from the same series because it reveals the end of the first wasn't actually as much of a bummer as you thought even if the situation isn't resolved yet. you know.

WAIT i lied i also wrote a klance titanic au in high school which was SOOO funny like not even titanic the movie. titanic the historical event. and i killed those guys. high school me was so funny and for what.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

most of them. again, i'm a fixer at heart. but i would say probably wild blue yonder, my narnia wing au, 'cause literally everybody wins in that one. writing it made me able to listen to the prince caspian ost without crying for a solid couple weeks because i was like yayyyy fixit :) that's how powerful it is.

not really.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

no because i am overcome with secondhand embarrassment and shame and i dislike 90% of the vocabulary involved but sometimes i'm overcome with hubris reading bad smut and going "i could do better than this." like where is the eroticism. where's the character study. where's the unhinged vulnerability and intimacy. it's all so bad.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the wildest one you’ve written?

not at the moment, but i used to write rise of the brave tangled frozen dragons fic, and once i had an au where elsa was shipwrecked and lost her memory and washed up in america and made friends with spirit. you know. the stallion of the cimarron. i was an interesting child.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

no but i've had people ask which is fine by me.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

yeah i used to co-write warriors fics with my friend in high school, and then i was co-writing a horror au series (tho not specific fics) with some friends a few years ago, and tam and i never did end up finishing the coma au but we WERE co-writing it at the time. and i was also part of a collaborative story project for a vld zine back in the day.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

um i don't really know if i have one. i don't tend to focus on ships over everything else, though i have some beloved ones i'll always hold dear, like aragorn and arwen, quitahl, brileygail, the works.

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i mean there's still the penumbra anastasia au on my ao3 so that's the easy answer. i'm also unsure if i'll ever get up the energy to complete the byler tsr au, or my reverse dawn treader au. i don't know. we'll see.

16. What are your writing strengths?

i'm good with character voices and getting inside characters' heads + to the meat of their relationships i think. i can write a bangin' metaphor. i'm good at melding my own style with the source material's style to make it feel more authentic. i am very very good about consistency and accuracy in details. i understand canon very well.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

too wordy. often spend too much time on introspection which jams up the pacing. plot.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

i would like to be able to do it but i do not speak anything but english and a little spanish so i'm pretty sure i'll fuck it up lol.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

lord of the rings. i still have this fic. it's handwritten on tinkerbell notebook paper.

i fear i am never topping north of desire and the national treasure polyfic.

Conner looked around at the Justice League and their young protégés and felt more out of place than he ever had in the Team. Each of his friends seemed to belong by the side of their Leaguer, most chatting and laughing amicably (except for Batman, of course, since he pretty much never laughed). Conner stood to the side and watched the interactions he’d done nothing to deserve.  

Artemis was standing with the Green Arrow, comparing their quivers and arrows side-by-side.

M'gann was conversing telepathically with her uncle, but both of them were smiling, seemingly enjoying whatever mental conversation they were having.

Kaldur and Aquaman were examining the stash of snacks Wally had brought with him, the taller Atlantean poking at a chip bag curiously as Kaldur explained

Wally was being… Wally, talking and gesturing animatedly as he described something in excited detail to the Flash, who actually looked like he was considering his nephew’s ideas. (Conner wasn’t sure whether that was a good or bad thing.)

Robin looked like he was giving Batman a mission report, save for all the unwords Conner could hear sprinkled among the events of their last assignment. Robin finished off his report with a grin, and Batman gave him an approving nod.

What Conner wouldn’t give to get something like that from Superman. But his own Leaguer was notably absent — and even when he wasn’t, he could barely look Conner in the eye. Conner understood. He wasn’t supposed to exist, let alone be hanging around Superman. It was a miracle the others had accepted him into the Team as it was. 

Everyone else was a hero, a shining beacon of hope to the people of their cities. 

Conner was just a shadow, a replacement. But that was okay. 

There were worse people to be a shadow of than Superman.

Full Name: Kanan McCarthy

Pronouns: They/them, not strict on pronouns though.

Sexuality: Pansexual

Occupation and Titles: Freestar Militia Infantry (formerly), Shaw Gang Outlaw (formerly), Argos Extractors Miner (formerly), Smuggler and general criminal (currently), Constellation Member (currently)

Birthday and Age: At the beginning of the game (May 7th, 2330) Kanan is 37. They turn 38 shortly after. They were born on May 27th, 2292 in Akila City.

Physical Description: Kanan stands at exactly six feet tall (about 183 cm). They are physically active and as such have a sort of athletic build.

Clothing Style: Kanan wears masculine leaning clothing and mostly sticks to more "wild west" themed apparel. They are often seen in their signature red poncho and cowboy hat.

Background

As I don't want to spoil things, I'll keep this vague. Kanan was born and raised on Akila in Freestar space. Them and their family lived on the McCarthy Homestead just outside Akila City walls.

Kanan took part in the Colony War at a young age, having gotten caught up in the war propaganda. As such, they lied about their age in order to fight for the Freestar Collective. The Colony War took a huge toll on both Kanan and the McCarthy family as a whole.

Kanan went to college after the war and earned a bachelor's degree in engineering, having majored in engineering and minored in astronomy. They fell into a life of crime afterward, having joined the Shaw Gang for some time and then branching out on their own.

As seen in my fic titled The Man in Red, Kanan joined Argos Extractors about a year before the story of Starfield after encountering an odd bounty hunter in the Red Mile who wanted them alive.

They joined Constellation after encountering the Artifact on Vectera, and their story is currently being written in my fic titled Event Horizon.

Combat and Skills

Preferred fighting style: Kanan prefers mid to close range combat with guns, though they are not against getting very close and engaging in close quarters combat with melee weapons or hand-to-hand.

Favorite Weapon(s): Kanan carries a modified razorback revolver named "Penumbra." Kanan also carries around and prefers shotguns, but also keeps a sniper rifle handy as well as small blades.

Special Skills: Like any wild west gunslinger, Kanan is highly skilled at using pistols. They also use Starborn abilities (although they are not Starborn themself). Kanan is charismatic and knows just the right buttons to push when it comes to enemies, but also which words to choose when trying to de-escalate a situation. As they went to college for engineering, Kanan is well versed in various means of engineering, which includes spaceship building and design, outpost construction, weapon handling and management, and spacesuit technology. They are an excellent pilot as well, capable of coming out on top in even the most dangerous dogfights.

Relationships

Family: Kanan's father is James McCarthy, a former Freestar Ranger and former member of the First Cavalry mech division. Their mother is Charlotte McCarthy, a scientist and astronomer. They had an older brother named Owen who was also apart of the First Cavalry mech division during the Colony War. He was killed in the later years of the Battle of Niira. Lastly, Kanan is a twin; their twin sister is named Senya, a ronin by trade who currently lives with and takes care of their father at the McCarthy Homestead.

Kanan would later consider Constellation as their own "found family."

Love interest: Sarah Morgan. Before Sarah, Kanan rarely ever had any serious relationships out of fear of commitment. Instead, they often wandered from lover to lover and held many "friends with benefits" type relationships. One night stands are not uncommon for Kanan, though their more promiscuous behavior settles down once they end up in a serious relationship with Sarah.

Best Friend(s): Kanan is very close with all the members of Constellation, but finds a close friendship in both Andreja and Matteo.

Respiraste hondo y te obligaste a fingir que nada había pasado. Seguiste caminando, aunque con una ligera cojera, esperando que Brock no notara nada de lo que acababa de ocurrir, pero pronto Brock se dio cuenta de que algo no estaba bien.

Brock te miró fijamente, siguieron avanzando, no obstante el dolor en tu pie aumentaba y cada vez era más difícil disimularlo hasta que Brock finalmente te detuvo y te miró directamente a los ojos.

Suspiraste, sabiendo que no podías seguir ocultándolo.

—Me torcí el pie —admitiste a regañadientes. —Pero estoy bien, de verdad.

—¿Por qué no me lo dijiste antes? Podrías empeorar la lesión.

—No quería que te preocuparas —dijiste, sintiéndote avergonzada.

—Siempre me preocuparé por ti —señaló, suspiró y sacudió la cabeza—. No puedes esconder cosas así. Se agachó y te tomó en brazos antes de que pudieras protestar—. Te llevaré, no puedes caminar en ese estado.

Te acomodaste en sus brazos, sintiendo la calidez de su cuerpo contra el tuyo.

—Gracias, Brock —murmuraste, apoyando tu cabeza en su hombro.
