MIDNIGHT SAILING FROM HONG KONG...

A midnight sailing from Hong Kong is exhilarating, dramatic overkill. A series of hulking, floodlit skyscrapers crouch down at the water's edge. They stand in the shade of the ring of brooding, darkened mountains that embrace this most desired and enigmatic of Far Eastetn cities.

Multi coloured laser lights skewer the warm, muggy darkness like searchlight beams. Silent and serene, your ship shrugs off her ropes, and meanders at almost walking pace past this mesmerising, man made forest of concrete, glass and steel.

It's a uniquely splendid procession, and as auspicious a start to a voyage in these fabled, Far Eastern reaches as can be contemplated.

Perhaps only the leave taking of Manhattan at midnight by ship can serve up more of a platinum chip adrenaline surge. My recommendation would be to experience both, and decide for yourselves...

Shanghai Swimming Pool (2)

People are swimming from one side to another, from shallow to deep, then reverse. When they are about to meet another person in the water unavoidably, they suddenly stand up, leaning to the red floating line, politely making ways to others.

Perhaps some men are nodding to the women passing by?

Dirty water, but shows the color of light blue.

A romantic song plays, a little sadly, but still with hope: “although the sky is raining, I’m waiting for your return all the same.”

Harmonica plays during the bridge of this song. The sound of harmonica is cut off by the sound under the water. What is that sound under the water? A silent roar:

 “Hong-hong”

 People in the area of shallower water talk engagingly, like in the CCTV[1] news, “both parties processed a kind conversation”, as if one second after, they will shake each other’s hands, or play Mahjong on the water surface.

The texture of water; the texture of ceramic tile of its container; the texture of People’s skin.

Mass floating upon the same water, suddenly turning into one class of all classes, one people of all peoples, on kind of citizens of all kinds of citizens. The spirit of our class, of our people, of our citizens, is the mixed liquid of sweat, urine, saliva, and chlorine water in this huge swimming pool.
