to celebrate the last few days of #APAHM, we wanted to talk about our experiences as asian american women 🙋🏻‍♀️ from a young age, we grew up with two different cultures that expected us to be two different people - don’t cause conflict but learn to speak up for yourself, blend in with the crowd but show your individuality - with so many rules, you start to lose sight of who you truly are at the core. i’ve always struggled with learning to balance who i am vs. who i am expected to be, i felt like i was doing a disservice to both asians and americans because i didn’t know how to balance the two. after years of internal conflict, i’ve slowly learned to embrace the two cultures that make me unique and proud to be an asian american woman 🇺🇸🇨🇳 listen in on the conversation in this week’s #perfectlyimperfectpodcast 🌟 (at Dia:Beacon) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByBx8DEhN5d/?igshid=9ur5cclhgcss

Soulmates
Today on my 40min 15 mile commute (classic for Los Angeles), I listened to Christine Chen’s and Regina Fang’s podcast Perfectly Imperfect, specifically episode #25 “Finding Your Soulmate and Home with Wendyslookbook ❤️.” (Ahhh!!! My post got deleted after this point because I put in the less than 3 heart sign that was originally in the podcast title which Tumblr took as html code and didn’t register any of the text I put in thereafter!!! So the remainder of this post is actually my best attempt at remembering what I wanted to say, but I think it’s missing a lot of the “in the moment” feelings I had when I originally tapped this post up on my phone. ARGH. Anyway...) 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 I love these girls so much. This podcast completes me. I feel so validated in feeling like there is such a thing as having a relationship with a city. It’s like what my sub-intern said, who’s also not from LA, that individually, people are fine, but all together, LA is not our scene. Sometimes, it’s not me. Sometimes, it’s you, LA.
It made me feel like where I grew up, people valued more and bonded more over each other’s uniqueness and struggles. But I feel like in LA, people valued sameness more. For example, if I were to meet someone and I find that they don’t use any kind of social media, only read newspapers, and is a true philosophy buff, I dig that and I want to get to know them more. But I feel like in LA, if the average Angeleno (or Angelena) somehow by chance dug deep enough to even figure that much out about someone they just met, their response would be more, “That’s so weird. Why aren’t you on social media? Don’t you realize you’re missing out on all the food truck events and trendy festivals around the city? Oh, you’re a philosophy buff...that’s cool, I guess. *hair flip* *adjust trendy hipster sunglasses* “
Okay, I admit, I’m totally stereotyping. But as the saying goes, stereotypes are stereotypes because they’re true...
But, really, at the end of the day, what I come away from this podcast is that I’m not alone. Other people have gone through this - moving to a new city, feeling lost, finding that things are just not clicking, and still somehow moved on (and out) in the end and got to better places (literally) in their lives. It’s not forever. And it’s not about you. Sometimes, a city is just not your soulmate.
Also, apparently, for Los Angeles, the length of the trial period is 2-5 years. What??? I guess not only does it take forever to get around the city but also to get settled into the city. 😑

we’re taught to chase our dreams, but i constantly had conflicting thoughts as to whether i should pursue something “practical” or something i truly love. this week we talk about career vs. hobby., choosing between the two has never been easy for me, there is so much pressure to make the “right” decision that we lose sight of what we wanted for ourselves in the first place, can there be a balance between the two? listen in on the convo!💫#perfectlyimperfectpodcast (at Lake Elsinore, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz1j4HvBXNv/?igshid=1vdj19dqd3tk7

perfectly imperfect is BACK! 🎉thank you SO much for the love and encouragement we received during our break, you have no idea how much it uplifted my spirits when i needed it the most 💖 this week, our mics are back on and we’re talking about perfection✨ chasing perfection, paralyzed by perfection. i’ve always struggled with wanting to do everything flawlessly that often i become too scared to even take the first steps so i don’t even have the opportunity to fail. it’s still something i’m working on and learning to be more confident with, after all smooth seas do not make skillful sailors ⛵️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ leave a comment below! does perfection drive you or paralyze you?💥#perfectlyimperfectpodcast (at Porto, Portugal) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxvA5Mqn3X2/?igshid=15kkyvcw6j5j3

ENFJ, the giver. from 2013 to now, i have taken the myers briggs test annually and my results have always been the same. i love caring about people deeply and truly want them to succeed, but i also seek outside approval and use that as a source of my own validation. personality tests are a great way for you to understand yourself on another level, it teaches you to be aware of your weaknesses and play to your strengths - oh, and it’s not so bad to have the same personality type as @oprah & @barackobama 😉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ this week we dive a little deeper into what our personality types are and how we use it to level up in our own journey of self-awareness. what’s your personality type? ✍🏼 #perfectlyimperfectpodcast ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📸: @jborjen (at SoHo, Manhattan) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzMVpiYBZrQ/?igshid=fpwg8fkwcvv5

AND WE’RE BACK!! New episode of #perfectlyimperfect with Chris Dinh is now live! The episode had me laughing and crying while editing and I hope it can evoke some of the same emotions in you 😂😭 Thank you to everyone to sent us the incredibly heartwarming messages during our short break. It felt nice to take a breather, but it feels even better to be back 💕 • In this week’s episode, we take a deeper dive into our mother’s stories and reflect on how each of our relationships with them have evolved over the years 🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♂️ We grow up so engrossed in our own thoughts and dreams that we often forget that our mom’s were once our age and were also just navigating through life the best way they knew how. Growing up as Asian Americans, we often struggle to find that understanding and common ground, but despite the cultural differences, at the very end of the day, our mother’s stories are the foundation for ours 💫 • Thank you @chrisdinh for your openness and honesty. This episode was so much fun to record and it felt like no time has passed since our Copa Vida days ☕️ I’ve loved watching you perfect your craft throughout the years, and am so excited for your upcoming projects. You never cease to amaze me with your resiliency✨ • #perfectlyimperfectpodcast #chrisdinh #moms #firstgeneration #asianamericans #podcast #pip (at Negombo)

Growing up I was taught to suppress negative emotions and brush things under the rug, so much so that even when there was a visibly large obstacle, I would choose to ignore it and pretend that everything was fine☕️🔥 It wasn’t until I got older that I realized how detrimental it was to my own sanity; I would have explosive fights with my parents or lock myself in my bedroom not speaking to anyone but not fully understand why. This week the magical Mimi teaches us how to accept those negative feelings for what they are and use them as fuel for the positive💫Learning to appreciate the darkness is just as important as appreciating the light 🌓 and in today’s political climate, this is definitely a message we all need to hear💥 • Thank you @mimochai for shedding your wisdom and fairy dust!✨ You have been someone that I deeply admired for years and I feel so lucky to be able to have such authentic conversations with you. Your strength and resiliency to continue sharing happiness by playing with light and dark is remarkable and I can’t wait for your very first story book!! (Go support her @kickstarter if you haven’t already) Yay!🌵💕 • 📸: @_jdle • #mimochai #mimichao #perfectlyimperfectpodcast #perfectlyimperfect #podcast #happiness  (at Victoria Beach, Laguna Beach)

Posting this photo of the swimming pigs because it’s the only thing I’ve ever done that our guest this week was impressed with 🐷 Our comedic soul sister Amy Okuda joins us this week to talk confidence and what we think of the idea of “fake it till you make it” ✨ In this day and age, we are taught to act wiser than we are but what if it makes us feel like frauds? 🤔 • Thank you @amyokuda for sharing your story and incredible comedic timing 🎭 It’s been so fun to see you grow in your art and watch you on @atypicalnetflix! I’m so thankful you’re just as obnoxious as I am 💕 • #perfectlyimperfect #perfectlyimperfectpodcast #amyokuda #confidence #netflix (at Pig Beach - Big Major Cay, Exuma, Bahamas)

Looking at popularity through rose colored lenses 🌹 Growing up, I loved the idea of being popular. You have tons of friends, everyone likes you, you always feel included, but is it really as wonderful as it seems? 🤔 This week our ray of sunshine Ashley Matsunami joins our conversation about popularity and bullying. Were we the popular kids or were we the mean kids? Link in bio to find out! 🎧 • Thank you @ashmats for showing a different side of you! oh, the places you’ll go 💫 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ looking back at these photos, it’s crazy to think that its been a decade since my college experience began. i was young, naive, unsure of myself, and unsure of what i could be. i didn’t know i had choices or opinions, i didn’t know i had a voice - i looked to others for answers when in reality, i had them in myself all along. college was my opportunity to try something new, and tho it was an unconventional journey, it was mine and i wouldn’t have it any other way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ this week we talk about college, the good, the bad, the should have done’s. college is daunting, college is exhilarating, it’s a whirlwind experience with people who may become your life long friends or people you just happened to cross paths with, but i know who i am today is because i was challenged during that time in my life, and because of that i came out the other side a stronger, more confident me 🙆🏻‍♀️ #perfectlyimperfectpodcast (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByUMn41BErp/?igshid=1ofk5qfzm2t6m
