somebody else has probably def already said this but whenever ppl are like "oh no but they/them is PLURAL" im like. hi babe. we actually have a singular pronoun that gets conjugated in plurality: it's "you".

we say: "where were you? how are you? do you know my friend?"

this is not singular, which would be: "where was she? how is she? does she know my friend?"

the argument is that it's "confusing" bc what if you're trying to talk about one specific person out of a group? and i'm like... this is already the same logical problem we've always had in speech. we even run into this problem whenever there's more than 1 person with the same pronoun; where we end up saying something like "she said no, but she said yes." you probably just have to use their name or otherwise indicate whom you are speaking about.

okay but what if you're trying to say "i just met them" (singular) but it's unclear if you meant the plural "i just met them". good news. it's the same thing as "you" still. in the same way you might have to say "i just met y'all" or "i just met all of you" to mean a whole group rather than one person, you might say - "i just met them all" or "i just met all of them" or just use their fucking name if you need to.

we have complained for years that "you" can operate as a singular and plural word. you're way more used to it than you think you are, i promise. i know it takes time to get over the societal conditioning that does exist. i mess up my own fucking pronouns sometimes. it's okay. you learned how to use an iphone. you can learn this thing, too.

It is kind of funny how much I've detached myself from appearance directly correlating to gender actually. When I design a character I go. Okay. What would they wear that reflects their personality and surroundings? And I make a character who is a 30 year old divorced man who looks like this:

A while back I saw sm1 saying tsukasa expresses emotions like it’s his first time experiencing them & while it’s very funny and true I think it’s also worth noting that unlike tv/movie actors, stage actors have to really exaggerate their body language/expressions so that their emotions are readable for everyone in the theatre. On screen you can easily pick up the micro expressions on an actor’s face because you’re like 5 ft away at most and the camera often zooms in on their face. From the back of the theatre you can’t read subtle expressions so the actors need to over emphasize and use their whole body. All this to say: given that u cannot take the theatre kid out of tsukasa I feel like his acting just bled into how he expresses his emotions.

Emu also does the body language thing but it’s harder to tell as she’s normally expressing a smaller range of emotions than tsukasa (she’s naturally joyous and whimsical creature & tsukasa is usually given ample reasons to express annoyance). I think that’s more of a result of her exaggerating her happiness so that other people are also happy rather than an acting thing though. Gestures at her refusing to show negative emotions. Entertainer/clown (actual clowns, not the insult) vs stage actor. Really good examples of them doing this is the clip of rui imitating tsukasa & the clip of nene imitating emu.

Outside of the times when the Ninja break up for trauma reasons, Jay and Zane do have a few opportunities thrown their way, and I guess there is the time they work at the tea shop, but atm I can't recall if I have Kai doing anything else significantly in particular down the line :d
