Dog Day Afternoon (Sidney Lumet, 1975)
Cast: Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, Chris Sarandon, Sully Boyar, Carol Kane, James Broderick, Lance Henriksen, Susan Peretz, Judith Malina. Screenplay: Frank Pierson. Cinematography: Victor J. Kemper. Production design: Charles Bailey. Film editing: Dede Allen. Dog Day Afternoon is a tragicomic docudrama about an ill-advised, ill-planned bank robbery that went wrong in almost all ways imaginable. It gave Al Pacino one of his most entertainingly flamboyant roles as Sonny Wortzik, who wants the money to pay for his lover's sex reassignment surgery. In its day, this motive might have been played more for laughs than it would be today, but Chris Sarandon's performance as Leon, who wants to transition to female, brought a measure of sympathy to the character that it might otherwise have lacked. The film is, like so many of director Sidney Lumet's, notable not only for standout performances like Pacino's and Sarandon's, but also for its exceptional ensemble work among the hostages in the bank and the cops outside, a result of Lumet's going beyond the screenplay (which won an Oscar for Frank Pierson) to workshop dialogue and business among the groups, playing up the emerging Stockholm Syndrome of the hostages and the itchiness of the impatient cops.

The final part of the multi-part article by Pitchfork - an inDepth look/review of Dirt Apart from the band’s self-titled third LP—which also debuted at the top of the album chart in 1995—Staley’s last recordings were subdued affairs. He provided lead vocals on Above, the underrated, jazz-inflected LP from the Mad Season “supergroup,” and displayed his increasingly frail appearance on the band’s MTV Unplugged set the next year. The band decided not to tour for the self-titled album, and after their fourth show opening for Kiss in 1996, Staley was hospitalized for an overdose (after Kemper Arena performance 7/3/96) . Soon after, his longtime girlfriend died of complications from her own drug abuse. The band went on indefinite hiatus, and Staley disappeared. While Dirt was solidifying itself as a modern rock standard, a crop of lesser Alice-influenced bands were rising up the charts, and “heroin chic” was falling out of fashion. (For several reasons, I removed 2 paragraphs from this last segment). When he was 18, Staley, like so many other aspiring rock stars, wanted the freedom to write about what he wanted, how he wanted. As his fame increased, and his addiction and isolation deepened, he started using his music to shock, but also to build a bridge into his world. In this light, “Would?” is a far more accurate depiction of Staley’s drive to draw others into his personal darkness. “Try to see it once my way,” he pleaded, both a provocative dare to the squeamish and an invitation to keep him company, for as long as you could. • Article link: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/alice-in-chains-dirt/ • Photographer: Chris Cuffaro —————————————————— #nehistripesseattle #LSMS #LSMSAiC #aliceinchains #laynestaley #chainer4life #mikestarrforever #1990s #seankinney #jerrycantrell #the1loveaic #grungeera (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck2YVKsuJyW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

10 chub actors from the 1940s that didn’t make my first 2 lists. This is a combination of lead actors and character actors.
1. Oliver Hardy. Laurel and Hardy were on the decline in the 40s, although they still did 9 feature length films.
2.Walter Slezak. This was Walter’s best decade for movies. He was in 15 and featured in all of them. His best films were the early ones when he was used in dramas.and he played German Military, like Lifeboat and This Land is Mine.. In the late 40s in was the protagonist in comedies. I suspect he wanted to shed the Nazi image and picked comedies on purpose.
3.Alan Carney was featured in 14 movies, 7 times he was paired with Wally Brown in movies directed toward the military during WWII. He and Wally played rookie recruits who do everything wrong. I first saw him in It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and he was one of the many actors in that movie who I didn’t know but now I do.
4. Francis L. Sullivan was a rotund British actor often compared to Sydney Greenstreet. He was featured in 16 films, often playing Military Officers in the early part of the decade. He was the ideal Dickensian character, playing in both Oliver Twist and Great Expectations in the 1940s.
5.Laird Cregar was an excellent actor and had some memorable roles in the 14 films he was in before his death in 1944 after a radical crash diet and surgery. He wanted to increase the roles he was offered which compelled him to lose 100 lbs. Laird was also a gay man and, again, an excellent actor.
6.Chris-Pin Martin, part Mexican-part Native American and a lazy eye. He often played Mexican sidekicks or Mexican servants in Western settings. Late in the 40s he became a regular in the Cisco Kid series as Pancho.
7.Howard Freeman was in 49 films in the 40s but his name only appeared on 7 posters. One of those guys that got important roles but nobody knew his name.
8. Cy Kendall was another. 54 films and only 3 posters. His likeness appeared on more posters than his name. He wasn’t really that good of an actor but his large presence and stone face could be intimidating.
9.Charles Kemper started his film career in 1947 but did his name on 9 posters of the 16 films he was in. He gave many memorable performances. Including The Southerner and Scarlet Street. His career was cut short in 1950 when he was killed in a road accident.
10.W.C. Fields didn’t make many movies in the 1940s. But they were 3 classics. My Little Chickadee, The Bank Dick and Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.

Which 7 acts made it to the semifinals?
CLOSE
Tumblr media
Stand-up comedian Ryan Niemiller broke Simon Cowell’s mean streak on “America’s Got Talent.” Niemiller had the judges laughing with his jokes. USA TODAY
The fans have spoken on “America’s Got Talent.”
The second round of semifinalists were revealed during Wednesday’s results episode, which doubled as Howie Mandel’s 10-year anniversary as a judge on the show.
His gift? A massive Sunset Boulevard billboard plastered with Simon Cowell’s face, reading, “Happy 10 Year Anniversary Howie.”
Mandel wasn’t impressed with the prank, just as Cowell wasn’t wowed by last night’s performances. “We have made some terrible decisions … as to who we selected,” Cowell snipped Tuesday.
But the power to decide who moves forward is not in the judges’ hands. It is entirely up to fans around the world, who vote for their favorite acts.
Here’s what happened:
Last week on ‘America’s Got Talent’: Comedian Ryan Niemiller snaps Simon Cowell’s brutal mean streak
youtube
The fans’ picks
The five acts that received the most votes automatically advanced.
The first act to move forward was violinist Tyler Butler-Figueroa, Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer-winner.

“You had such a moment last night and I’m so thrilled you’re moving forward to the semifinals,” Cowell said to the emotional 11-year-old. “You have a God-given gift.”
Acrobats V. Unbeatable, recipients of Dwyane Wade’s golden buzzer, also moved forward.
“I said it last night: You guys had the best performance of the night and I still believe it right now,” Julianne Hough exclaimed. “Congratulations.”
Light Balance Kids, who Mandel said experienced technical difficulties during their act, also advanced, along with singer Robert Finley and comedian Ryan Niemiller.

“It’s all in your hands now,” Cowell told Niemiller, before abruptly cutting himself off. Niemiller was born with a congenital birth defect in both arms.
“I didn’t mean that,” Cowell said. “You know what I’m trying to say. … Why do I do live TV?”
‘AGT’: Comedian Ryan Niemiller got his start telling jokes in small towns
The face-off
Singers Charlotte Summers, Chris Kläfford and Ndlovu Youth Choir finished in the middle of the pack and were on the brink of elimination.
The three acts went head-to-head in a live voting round for the “Dunkin’ Save,” where fans had the opportunity to rescue only one performer.
The rules? Whoever received the most votes in a 30-minute flash round would move on. In the end, Kläfford advanced.
But, host Terry Crews had another trick up his sleeve.
The judges were able to save one last contestant. Gabrielle Union and Cowell voted for Ndlovu Youth Choir to stay, while Hough and Mandel opted for Summers – a tie.
So the decision was ultimately up to America, again. The act that received the most votes would advance, Crews said. It was Ndlovu Youth Choir.
Eliminated
The four acts with the fewest votes  – golden buzzer-winning rapper Joseph Allen, variety group Nick & Lindsay, contortionist Marina Mazepa and mentalist duo The Sentimentalists  – were eliminated.
Summers was all sent packing.
Next week
“America’s Got Talent” will return Aug. 27 for the final round of quarterfinals. (NBC, 8 EDT/PDT)
Next week’s performers include two golden-buzzer winners – Detroit Youth Choir and opera singer Emanne Beasha – along with comedian Jackie Fabulous; singer Benicio Bryant; beat-boxing group Berywam; magicians Dom Chambers and Eric Chien; tambourinist Gonzo; dog act Lukas & Falco; singer MacKenzie and guitarist Marcin Patrzalek.
Last week’s results: Is Kodi Lee moving on to the semifinals?

Emmy Nominations Reaction:
As I write this the 2017 Emmy nominations have just been announced and it is certainly a fascinating if not quite frustrating list. Awards always get some things right and some things wrong, but looking at in particular the drama categories the Emmy’s have certainly got more wrong than right, although you could potentially say the opposite for drama. Let’s take a closer look at some of the major categories.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Atlanta
black-ish
Master of None
Modern Family
Silicon Valley
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Veep Okay this is a strong list, minus Modern Family. To be fair the state of the half hour comedy/dramedy is so strong it would be tough to come up with a bad list but I am certainly happy to see the excellent Atlanta included, alongside the likes of Veep, Kimmy and Master of None, even if I expected all of those to get nominations. I would like to have seen Catastrophe get nominated and I really like the latest season of Transparent even while others saw it as a bit uneven, but I’m not going to complain too much about their choices here.
Outstanding Drama Series
Better Call Saul
The Crown
The Handmaid’s Tale
House of Cards
Stranger Things
This is Us
Westworld
Well firstly wow. This is a crazy list. Only BCS and HOC have any pedigree here with the other five choices all being new to the party. Yet while I like to see the Emmys mixing it up I have to say I’m not crazy about these choices. Admittedly I have not got around to seeing all of them (peak TV and all that) but I must say that I don’t believe that HOC, Stranger Things and Westworld deserve to be nominated instead of the unparalleled The Leftovers, the fantastic Halt and Catch Fire or even the slightly below-par fifth season of The Americans, plus a whole host of other great shows like Rectify and OITNB.
Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Viola Davis
Claire Foy
Elisabeth Moss
Keri Russell
Evan Rachel Wood
Robin Wright
I really did not like Westworld, at points I may have even actively disliked it but I have to say I’m happy to see Evan Rachel Wood get recognised, she was the best thing on the show. Also delighted to see Keri Russell continue to get nominated even when her show is not. On the other side of things Carrie Coon’s admission while not surprising is disappointing (although she has been nominated in the limited series category for her work in Fargo) because that is the best performance on TV.
Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Sterling K Brown
Anthony Hopkins
Bob Odenkirk
Matthew Rhys
Liev Schrieber
Kevin Spacey
Milo Ventimiglia
Sorry but Liev Schrieber, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Spacey are any of these actually good performances. I mean they are all fun but are these performances really better than Justin Theroux, Lee Pace, Wagner Moura, the answer is no. Otherwise happy to see Rhys be recognised and maybe this year he will finally get his long overdue victory.
Lead Actress, Comedy
Pamela Adlon
Jane Fonda
Allison Janney
Ellie Kemper
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Tracee Ellis Ross
Lily Tomlin You can’t really argue with this list in terms of the talent that is there but there is something boringly predictable about it. Pamela Aldon is something of a curve-ball but I would have loved it if they had thrown in a couple more like maybe Sharon Horgan, Aya Cash or Rachel Bloom just to name a few. I mean for however amazing she is Julia Louis Dreyfus does not really need another Emmy, at this stage they’re just cluttering up her house.
Lead Actor, Comedy
Anthony Anderson
Aziz Ansari
Zach Galifianakis
Donald Glover
William H. Macy
Jeffrey Tambor
Another strong if predictable list. Not 100% sure about the inclusion of Ansari, I know many praised his performance this year but I’m still not convinced by his abilities as an actor. I think that place might have been better served going to Rob Delaney or Chris Geere.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black)
Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale)
Chrissy Metz (This Is Us)
Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things)
Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale)
Thandie Newton (Westworld)
Can’t argue with these choices to much either other than to say Amy Brenneman should have been recognised for her fantastic episode of The Leftovers this season.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul)
Michael Kelly (House of Cards)
John Lithgow (The Crown)
Jeffrey Wright (Westworld)
Mandy Patinkin (Homeland)
David Harbour (Stranger Things)
Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us)
Jonathan Banks is more deserving of his nomination than everyone on this list but how Michael McKean has not been nominated is beyond me. One of the single best performances on TV and it gets nothing. Christopher Eccleston and Clayne Crawford (Rectify) both can feel aggrieved to, but not surprised.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Louie Anderson (Baskets)
Ty Burrell (Modern Family)
Alec Baldwin (Saturday Night Live)
Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Tony Hale (Veep)
Matt Walsh (Veep)
Again like Banks Hale and Walsh are very deserving but this was the year of Jonah Ryan and Timothy Simons should have been nominated here.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live)
Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live)
Vanessa Bayer (Saturday Night Live)
Kathryn Hahn (Transparent)
Judith Light (Transparent)
Anna Chlumsky (Veep)
The dominance of SNL is telling but outside of that I am happy to see Kathryn Hahn and in particular Judith Light, just for her cover of Hand in Pocket alone, get nominated.

Hey everyone, and welcome to the second edition of Jason’s DVD Deep Dive! What we are doing here is going through my incredibly massive blu ray and DVD collection and simply reviewing the films. One by one in alphabetical order, starting with the blu rays.
The movie we will be talking about today is the 2012 action/comedy directed by Christopher Miller and Peter Lord, based on the hit TV show from the 80’s, 21 Jump Street. It stars Jonah Hill (Superbad), Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel).
The Plot: The film starts in a flashback in 2005 showing the “nerd” Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and the popular jock, Jenko (Channing Tatum). Schmidt gets rejected asking a popular pretty girl and made fun of by Jenko, while Jenko then gets called to the office to be told his bad grades will keep him out of prom and he will barely graduate high school. They have a bit of a moment crying on opposite benches hinting that maybe these two are a lot more alike than previously thought. Flash forward seven years and these two meet again at the police academy. Jenko is good at the physical stuff and Schmidt is better with the written stuff. They decide to help each other out. They develop a bond, become best friends and graduate the academy together.
Their dreams of being “bad ass” cops aren’t brought to fruition as we see them as bike cops covering a public park. After we see them with their rudimentary nonsense they deal with on a daily basis, Jenko spots members of the 1%ers, a known motorcycle gang. He sees them smoking pot so they approach them and search their bikes and find cocaine. A chase ensues. Schmidt is not able to apprehend his suspect and it is shown that he is very hesitant about general police activity. Jenko catches the leader, Domingo (DeRay Davis). It’s the guys first major bust.
They show up to the station, acting like they made the biggest arrest in history, only to find out from Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman) that they had to release Domingo as Jenko didn’t properly read him the Miranda rights. That’s where they are informed they are being transferred to a rebooted police program from the 80’s for “younger” looking police officers called 21 Jump Street. They show up there greeted by their new captain, Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They then get informed of their first mission as part of Jump Street. Billiam Willingham (Johnny Simmons), a student of Sagan High School, dies after OD’ing on a drug called HFS (Holy Fucking Shit). They are given identities as as Brad (Hill) and Doug (Tatum) McQuaid. While at the school, it is learned that high school isn’t exactly what it used to be in 2005. Schmidt becomes popular as he befriend popular kid and HFS dealer Eric (Dave Franco) and pretty girl Molly (Bree Larson). Jenko becomes friend with a group of science nerds in his chemistry class as they start to find the source and supplier of HFS. Jenko and Schmidt also buy and are forced to take HFS as we see the affects on them and are also approached by coach Walters (Rob Riggle).
Schmidt and Jenko decide to throw a party at Schmidt’s parents house to become closer to the students and to gain their trust. During the party a fight breaks out between Schmidt, Jenko and people from a rival high school. Schmidt wins the fight and gains the trust of the popular kids. While that was happening, the science kids hacked Eric’s phone so they can listen in on conversations.
A few days later, at a party at Eric’s, Jenko is listening in and hears of a meetup between Eric and the supplier, but also overhear Schmidt talking shit about Jenko. The rift between the two grows deeper as they follow Eric to a meetup with what turns out to be the 1%ers. Jenko and Schmidt follow them and their in-fighting causes a problem in pursuit and they have to evade the gang and they do so, successfully. The police chase causes Schmidt to miss a play he was cast in with Molly and is slipping deeper and deeper into this undercover persona. As he takes the stage as Peter Pan, an angry Jenko attacks him and they fight, which in turn causes them to get expelled. They also get fired from Jump Street.
Eric, being stressed out and nervous, decides to reach out to Schmidt and Jenko to use them as extra muscle for the major upcoming deal at prom. As the two get dressed, they rekindle their friendship. While at the prom, Schmidt meets up with Molly and learns she has taken HFS as Schmidt admits to her that he is a cop. Jenko has his science friends listen in on everything. They join Eric to head up to a room where they finally meet the supplier, Coach Walters. While there, the 1%ers show up as Jenko and Schmidt try to hide their identities as cops. Molly shows up at the door and exposes Schmidt as a cop. At that point the 1%ers recognize Schmidt and Jenko and a major gunfight ensues as Walters takes Molly hostage and two of the gang members reveal themselves to be undercover DEA agents Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) and Doug Penhall (Peter DeLuise), former members of the Jump Street division from the 80’s. A major gunfight ensues and many people get shot and murdered…including Hanson and Penhall.
Walters and Eric take off while still holding Molly hostage in one limo, as the 1%ers are in another followed by Jenko and Schmidt. While in pursuit, Jenko makes a bomb using a bottle of liquor that he learned from his science friends in AP Bio and blows up the limo carrying the gang. Final confrontation comes as Walters is there with Molly opposite Jenko and Schmidt. It is learned that Jenko is out of ammo. Walters goes to shoot Schmidt but Jenko takes the bullet for him. He encourages Schmidt that he can do it as Schmidt successfully shoots Walters, as he literally shoots his dick off.
The cops show up. Walters and Eric are arrested and Schmidt confronts Molly and apologizes for everything, they then kiss. They show back up to Jump Street and they are greeted with a hero’s welcome. Chief Dickson then informs them that they are going to college, much to Schmidt’s delight and Jenko’s dismay.
The Acting: The Good: Everyone is very good in this movie. It is very funny and everyone hits their beats perfectly. Tatum and Hill are brilliant together. This is the first time I was introduced to Franco and Larson and they were both great. Small roles from Elle Kemper (The Office), Jake Johnson (New Girl) and Chris Parnell (30 Rock) really enhanced this movie. Especially the appearances from 21 Jump Street alumni Holly Robinson-Peete, Peter DeLuise and Johnny Depp. Depp and DeLuise especially as they were unrecognizable throughout the entire film until the reveal at the end.
The Bad: if I had one complaint, it would be Rob Riggle. While he was ok…his over the top nature was somewhat irritating at times.
Best Performance: I cannot sing the praises of Channing Tatum enough. I would’ve never known that he would’ve had such amazing comedic timing. Made me a big fan of his.
The Review: This movie is easily one of my favorite comedies of all time. I cannot sing the praises of this film enough. It still holds up as a great comedy and is extremely well written and acted. Very highly recommend this movie.
The Overall Score: 9/10
