THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINTS PERPETUA AND FELICITY Feast Day: March 7
The story of Sts. Perpetua and Felicity, the patron saints of Carthage, has moved the hearts of generations of Christians.
Perpetua, a 22-year old noble lady of Carthage, was the mother of a baby boy; while Felicity, a young slave, at that time was pregnant. During the persecution of Lucius Septimius Severus in 203 AD, they were arrested along with three other catechumens: Revocatus, Saturninus and Secundulus.
They were baptized in prison by Saturus, their catechist, who underwent voluntary imprisonment with them. Perpetua surrendered the child to her pagan father, but remained firm in her faith despite his supplications. Felicity gave birth in prison to a child, whom a fellow Christian adopted.
After confessing their faith before the judge, the martyrs were condemned to be thrown to the wild beasts. They marched into the amphitheater, singing psalms and giving one another the customary kiss of peace.
The three men were torn to pieces by bears and leopards; while Perpetua and Felicity were exposed to a bull.
They stood hand in hand before the savage animal that tossed them repeatedly, leaving some horrible marks on their bodies. They were finally brought into the middle of the amphitheater and slaughtered with the sword. Perpetua guided to her throat the shaking hand on the inexperienced gladiator, who had failed to kill her at the first stroke.

Sts. Perpetua and Felicity were North African friends martyred for their Christian faith in the amphitheater at Carthage. We know precise details of their imprisonment because Vibia Perpetua, a twenty-two year old of a distinguished noble family, kept a journal -- the first known written document by a woman in Christian history, with a concluding narrative by an eye-witness.

you wanna know what confuses me?
anti-catholics are always going on about how we hate the LGBTQ+ community and how we're transphobic and all that "fun" stuff, but has anyone ever sat down to listen to Saints Perpetua and Felicity's story? They are literally known for being some of the first female martyrs and THEY ARE THE PATRONS OF SAME SEX RELATIONSHIPS!!!! THEY ARE THE UNOFFICIAL LESBIAN ICON OF CATHOLOCISM.
Tumblr media
LOOK, THEY ARE IN LESBIANS FOR EACH OTHER!!!! i highly recommend looking into their story.

SAINTS OF THE DAY (March 7)
Tumblr media
Saints Perpetua and Felicity were martyrs who died for the faith around the year 203.
St. Perpetua was a young, well-educated, noblewoman and mother living in the city of Carthage in North Africa.
Her mother was a Christian and her father was a pagan. In terms of her faith, Perpetua followed the example of her mother.
Despite the pleas of her father to deny her faith, Perpetua did the very opposite and fearlessly proclaimed it.
At the age of 22, she was imprisoned for her faith. While in prison, she continued to care for her infant child and put up with the tortures designed to make her renounce her faith.
Perpetua remained steadfast until the end. St. Perpetua was sacrificed at the games as a public spectacle for not renouncing her faith.
St. Felicity was a pregnant slave girl who was imprisoned with St. Perpetua.
Little is known about the life of St. Felicity because, unlike Perpetua, she did not keep a diary of her life.
After imprisonment and torture, Felicity was also condemned to die at the games.
Only a few days before her execution, Felicity gave birth to a daughter, who was secretly taken away to be cared for by some of the Faithful.

Today, March 7th, is the feast day of Saint Perpetua, one of the earliest Christian martyrs.
When Perpetua was thrown into prison in 203 AD for refusing to renounce her christian believes, she had a vision. She saw a ladder leading into heaven, guarded by a dragon. By invoking the name of Jesus Christ, she managed to subdue the dragon and was able to climb the ladder to salvation.

This description of martyrdom is not that of a victim
It is important to see how Perpetua and Felicity met their impending death. They fully embraced the prospect of death. Thus, we can read near the end of the account of Perpetua, as the games are winding down, that the rest of the Christians were
…not moving and in silence received the sword; Saturus much earlier gave up the ghost; for he had gone up earlier also, and now he waited for Perpetua likewise. But Perpetua, that she might have some taste of pain, was pierced between the bones and shrieked out; and when the swordsman’s hand wandered still (for he was a novice), herself set it upon her own neck. Perchance so great a woman could not else have been slain (being feared of the unclean spirit) had she not herself so willed it.
This description of martyrdom is not that of a victim who has unwillingly been put to death, but of followers of Christ who felt it an honor to give up their lives for him.

I sincerely believe there is a gap in genres between Novels Using Catholic Aesthetic and Catholic Novels.
Like, a Catholic Novel is similar to a Catholic film. It’s primarily consumed by people who are active Catholics looking for Catholic media that reflects or enforces their beliefs.
Now, Catholic Aesthetic appears a lot in other genres, perhaps especially horror. The terror of exorcism, or the piety/remorse associated with the confessional or a cathedral, for example. They all make for great imagery and typically attract non-Catholic audiences, and sometimes Catholics are actually offended by inaccuracies or contradictions to the catechism.
BUT. SOMETIMES. As somebody who studied Catholic apologetics in college (literally defense of the faith) and now lives a relatively secular life but keeps rosaries and incense on hand, I feel like Catholicism has so much history and superstition that people DON’T lean into because most people stop at that obvious imagery so they can appeal to a wider audience.
More horror about relics! Their bones live in the crosses of Christ’s crucifixion! The virgin mother weeping blood! The sheer bodily horror of developing spontaneous stigmata! More crucifixion and burning alive and impaling yourself on the sword of martyrdom! More horror of Felicity and Perpetua! More horror of Saint Joan! More horror of seeing a stag in the woods bearing a glowing orb of the Holy Ghost in its antlers! It’s demons, it’s ritual, it’s spirits, it’s eldritch, Lovecraftian horror at it’s best!
That! Shit! Fucks!

Having trouble getting one exact reason Perpetua and Felicity are the patron saints of butchers. One source says it's because they were "butchered" by gladiators but it seems just as likely to be because they were torn apart by a bull? Anyway it seems just as well that these prison cellmates should be the patron saints of butches. Discuss.
