Christmas, day 1: 1940s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Photo 4 shows Peter and his siblings in Regina at Christmas in 1966; photo 5 is Peter with his brother, Christmas 1967; photos 8 & 9 by Paul Natkin/Getty Images.
“We have a favor to ask. We would like to enlist your help in promoting The BEAT’s Christmas issue. During Christmas week, we’d like you to go naked. When you see others in offices, on the streets and in restaurants without their clothes, you will instinctively know that they are wishing you a Merry Christmas from The BEAT. We intend to be touring during the holidays. Without clothes it will be a cold but cool Christmas. THE MONKEES” - KRLA BEAT, December 17, 1966
“A couple of days before December 25, Peter vanished. The family lived in a three-story apartment house that had front and back entrances. When we realized that Peter was gone, Ginny and I scoured the apartment thoroughly — finding no little Peter Thorkelson. Finally, we turned to each other in panic and Ginny shouted, ‘You take the back stairs — I’ll take the front!” And all of a sudden we looked like a couple of middle-aged females on one of those romps you so often see the boys doing on their television show. Ginny [raced] off in one direction and I in the other. I had absolutely no luck at all. I searched on the stairs, under the stairs, and in the closets — and finally ended up on the back stoop shouting, ‘Peter come home! Where are you?’ Having no luck, I decided to run around to the front and see what was happening with Ginny. There she stood, hugging a sheepish-looking Peter and looking like she didn’t know whether to kiss him or kill him. It seems that young Peter was halfway down the block, standing by a telephone pole, expectantly waiting for something to happen, as he shivered in the snow which had begun to fall. When we got Peter upstairs and simmered down, Ginny asked him, ‘Where were you going? What were you doing?’ Peter looked her straight in the eye and said, quite simply, ‘I was going to find Santa Claus. I was waiting for him to come by.’ Well, we burst out laughing and hugged and kissed our baby. ‘Don’t worry,’ Ginny said, ‘I will make sure that Santa Claus doesn’t forget you this year — or ever.’” - Catherine McGuire Straus, 16, July 1967
“Imagine spending a magical night singing with The Monkees around Regina’s Whitmore Park neighbourhood in the late 1960s. That’s exactly what happened to a then-13-year-old Jim Sax. [...] At the time, Sax lived a couple of doors down from the Thorkelson family. H. John Thorkelson, Tork’s father, was an economics professor at what was then the University of Saskatchewan Regina campus. Sax befriended Tork’s younger brother Chris. ‘Chris called and told me to come over and swore me to secrecy before I went downstairs,’ Sax recalled. ‘So, I get downstairs and there are The Monkees, all of them, just hanging in the rec room.’ The band was visiting Tork’s family home. ‘I’m basically trying not to trip over my own jaw. I’m just 13 at the time so I’m just trying to be cool,’ Sax said. The memory-filled night didn’t end there for Sax, who found himself caroling around Flamingo Crescent where the family lived. ‘I said, “Yeah, absolutely I’m going with you guys. In fact, I’m picking the house because I know where all the pretty girls live,”’ Sax laughed. Sax described ‘instant insanity, possibly some incontinence,’ when doors opened and it was discovered the famous group was on residents’ doorsteps. He believes there are some Polaroid pictures floating around Regina somewhere, but he didn’t get a picture with the band. ‘I was being too cool; are you kidding?’ Sax said. Sax had to keep his memory a secret until the band left Regina, ‘but I was  almost stoned to death by the girls in my class’ when the night was revealed. The story of The Monkees visiting Regina certainly grew louder, especially as Tork returned on numerous occasions to visit his family. Green Zone contributor Darrell Davis lived one block away and came home from a shinny game to hear from his parents that The Monkees had sung on their doorstep. Don Young played in a band at the time and knew of such visits to the Whitmore Park neighbourhood. ‘The story was that some of the young girls would go over to the house and go by the window and try and hear him snoring or catch a glimpse of him,’ Young recalled.” - CJME dot com, February 21, 2019
“[My father] thinks the Monkees are quite interesting, but he doesn’t like the peripheral fame — the hundreds of phone calls he gets from fans. My mother foolishly told many callers that I would be home for Christmas and the house was surrounded!” - Peter Tork, Disc and Music Echo, January 20, 1968
“Several years ago, [commenter] spoke with Chip [Douglas] about the genesis of these 1976 recordings. He shared with me an anecdote about going out to record Peter Tork, after hours, at the high school where he was teaching. Chip brought a portable reel to reel recorder to capture Peter on the guitar and singing a cover of the song ‘Christmas on the Isthmus’. Peter started to perform the song when Chip suddenly remembered the tape he was recording on was the one with Davy's version of ‘White Christmas’ and his amazing, first take whiskey-infused vocal. Just in the nick of time Chip hit the kill switch and White Christmas '76 survived — but ‘Christmas on the Isthmus’ unfortunately never did get recorded.” - comment on the Monkees Live Almanac blog post about “Christmas Is My Time Of Year” (with Peter on Hammond organ), backed with “White Christmas” [listen to both songs here]

pls tell me abt the monkees psychological torture i have no clue what thats about i only know that they like. Exist
ok so imagine. you're an out of work musician/actor in the 1960's and you answer a call to play the part of a member of a rock and roll group on television. but get this: your character has your name and is based on a facet of your personality. the record execs and television producers led you to believe you would be part of a real musical group with creative control but instead you are forced to churn out endless pop hits that you hate. the public sees you as a fraud, a tourist in the music scene . but you're a serious artist who was promised an audience for your creativity. you've become a pawn of the producers. when do you realize that it's become impossible to separate your real self from the character on the TV screen? do you try to rebel? do you claw and scratch and fight for creative control? do you begin to forget who you are when the TV cameras switch off. when you are an old man, years after the television show has ended, do you still write about the audience's eyes on you, about the television screen between you and the rest of the world? at what point do you begin to consider that there's no escape. this happened to my friends Mike Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, David Jones, and Peter Tork

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE MONKEES + SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO – The Monkees “Porpoise Song” (live 2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgV3KLUrhAw This week in 1966, THE MONKEES TV show premiered and changed everything in popular music, television, and multi-media. Someday I’m going to write out my “journey with The Monkees.” Like millions of other pre-teens in 1966-67, I caught on to their music and their cutting-edge show that was a form of rock’n’roll psychedelic vaudeville. Frank Zappa and The Beatles were amongst their fans, and John Lennon said he “never missed an episode.” Little did I imagine that one day I’d professionaly work with The Monkees.
One day I was doing an interview and was asked, “What’s your favorite Monkees song?” My knee-jerk response is “Porpoise Song.” Besides being my #1 favorite Monkees song to perform and listen to, this was the only uncut footage I could find of us doing “Porpoise Song” on the American wing of the 2011 tour (thanks to Joey PGH1 for capturing this @ Merrillville IN 6-30-11). According to Monkees-authority/historian/manager Andrew Sandoval (who guided the 2011 international tour), the original recording was the most elaborate production in Monkees history. Cashbox magazine compared it to “I Am The Walrus,” and for me it felt like participating in a Pink Floyd set. Written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin (who created the porpoise theme), the song bookended the 1968 film HEAD, the deconstruction of The Monkees mythology.

From Peter Tork’s banjo contribution to the Wonderwall Music soundtrack (featured only in the movie, not on the album). The photo in this video is from that session.
The creation of Wonderwall Music, a series marking the 55th anniversary of the recording sessions - part 5:
“George was working on the musical score he wrote for the movie, “Wonder Wall.” When Peter arrived at the studio George asked him if he would play five-string banjo on one of the cuts. Peter was more than delighted and after a time they put down some beautiful sounds. Peter mentioned to George that he’d like to see the ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ film so George made arrangements for Peter to have a private screening at the hotel. Peter really flipped for the Beatles’ fantasy film and watched it through several times. One time he even took color slides while it was being projected on the screen.” - Monkee Spectacular, May 1968
“I remember [Peter Tork] from The Monkees played banjo on a session. Peter was so nervous that his hands were shaking.” - Colin Manley, Beatles Gear (2001)
“I remember George asking me, ‘Why don’t you come back and play banjo on this session [for ‘Wonderwall Music’] I’m producing in December?’” - Peter Tork, Medium, August 3, 2010
Peter Tork: “George invited me to play banjo on Wonderwall. He was working on the soundtrack for Wonderwall, and he invited me to come and play, and I did. You can’t hear it on the album, you can’t hear it on the album, but apparently — and I never have seen the movie.” Q: “But it’s in the film.” PT: “It’s in the film.” Q: “Yeah.” PT: “I think it was Paul’s banjo. Paul had a five-string banjo, which he had strung backwards of course, being left-handed. But it was alright with him if I restrung it. So… and British five-string banjos are different from American. The fifth string, instead of having a tuning peg right in the middle of the neck, it hits a tunnel and the string goes through a tunnel to a fifth string peg at the regular peg head. Very interesting, very weird. But it was okay. Got some music in, that’s all that mattered.” - Breakfast With The Beatles, June 16, 2013
“‘[George] invited me to his house. He played the sitar and said: ‘I’m working on a soundtrack album, I’d love to have you play a little banjo.’” Tork had traveled without his instrument, so Harrison borrowed McCartney’s five-string banjo for the session — ‘which Paul couldn’t play — at least conventionally, because the folk five-string banjo can’t be restrung in reverse order for left-handers, it must be custom made. I played for 45 minutes, George said, “Thanks very much,” and we went our separate ways.’
Tork’s breezy contribution didn’t make the record, but it can be heard 15 minutes into the film, after Collins is chided by his mother for spying through the wall. ‘And I did not get paid,’ he laughs. ‘George said: “We’ll figure that out later.” He knew that the honor itself was payment enough!’” - The Guardian, March 23, 2017
“[George] was as kind and as gentle a man as you could imagine.” - Peter Tork, Liverpool Echo, November 28, 2011 (x)

"I adore Peter Tork. He really is one of the most super people I’ve ever met. The day we said ‘Hello’ [on the set of ‘Hitting The High Seas’] he seemed to play his guitar and sing to me for hours — talk about romantic! Peter is very talented; intelligent, too. We spent a long time talking about such things as classical music and reincarnation. We have similar views about life and death: he believes there will always be a Peter Tork, and I believe there will always be a Jennifer Moss. Peter talked to me a lot. He put me right on a lot of things." - Jennifer Moss, NME, November 25, 1967 [x]

How did Peter end up telling the others about being an angel?
How did Mike not know he was one?
Oooo any other angel ask!!
Peter didn’t formally announce it necessarily, he sort of just stopped being careful about hiding himself. I always sort of imagine his reveal coming post Peter Tork and The Devil, in which he feels the guys are ready to know. It kind of happens by accident, he’s caught with his wings out by likely Davy when he thought he was alone in their room, and it goes into him coming out with it to all them finally. It’s weird at first but given what they’ve seen already it’s not too out there to deal with.
I honestly think Mike doesn’t know due to the whole fallen aspect of it. He can’t remember being an angel after being evicted from heaven, all he really knows is his normal life in which he convinced he is just an average guy. There is like a mental block almost, he has vague notions of something being different within him but he struggles to figure it out because it’s just so abstract. Mike is pretty good at explaining away all the little signs because it’s simpler than investigating something that doesn’t make sense to him.
