Perhaps there were better ways to organize hanging out with someone than showing up at their place of work. Phoenix knew that, deep down. It didn't mean he was going to follow the rule. In fact, that would be the exact reason that he was at Frisky Kitty cafe. However, it seemed like the best way to make certain he could capture his brother somewhere. How long had it been since they had talked one on one? It felt like it had been ages, the actual length of time lost to the world. He supposed that it didn't quite matter, did it?

Forgoing the line, Phoenix stood to the edge of the counter. He propped his elbows on the counter, face in his hands. "When are you off?" His voice was whiny as he spoke, hoping to drive the point home that he wasn't entirely keen to wait ages for the other to wrap up at work. "Because I was thinking we could do something. And before you ask, no. I do not know what that thing is but I'm great with plans. An expert, really."

212 by Azealia Banks ft. Lazy Jay BAYBEE. Fuck if this song doesn't eat even today. I cannot help but move when this song is on. It's perfect in my eyes. Azealia Banks has been part of some... Strange moments. And she has made a lot of choices that I do not stand for or with even a little.

13. One of your favorite 80's songs

I love me some Hall and Oates. I think this time I'm gonna go with I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) by Hall and Oates. I just think it's a good song. It's got some. like. Almost video game menu synth in the background going on? It's so understated and loopable. It pretty easily blends in the background. The airy ethereal stuff comes in when they're crooning about doing anything, and then the guitar comes in when they say no. Song's got a good structure, emotions are clearly mapped onto it. AND YOU KNOW MY BOY GOT A SAXOPHONE SOLO MIDWAY THROUGH. Great song, timeless.

26. A song that makes you want to fall in love

I think Say Anything is a band that I've always been sort of attached to growing up that almost doesn't deserve it. We all have one of those earnest, blinking, newborn colt songs, where our tastes or the band or even both are still growing into our stilt like baby legs, taking shaky steps that are full of promise but still a little rough around the edges. I think it was one of the first bands I listened to with swears in the lyrics, which made me feel secret and adult. They talked about sex, and masturbating, and emotions that weren't tidy or positive. They were what i needed at the time.

But I don't know, I've always been a schmaltzy loser. I think my favorite song of theirs is The Futile, but one song that makes me want to fall in love is I Want To Know Your Plans. It's a waltz! It is an honest to god waltz where you sing to the love of your life that you want to know their plans. Because you want in. You want to BE the plans. They keep you breathing. They give you strength. And you want to do the same. I don't know, I just love the devotion. I did it for you Marge. I would kill for you. Please ask me to kill for you.

It's quiet and kind and earnest. He says some corny shit, and some stuff that doesn't quite fit. I don't know. It feels real. He really will look out for this girl until they rot. He's all in.

I like it. I don't think it has to be perfect to be love. And I don't think this song needs perfection. It would be worse if it were polished, I think.

I would dance to this at my wedding. I've said that for years now and it hasn't stopped being true. I don't know. I hope the people close to me get it. Even if they don't get the song, they get why the song is mine. That's love too.

UTAH

2023 Jun 2 (Fri) – Again, we drove through the mountains today.  We took a different route and drove through places called Eden, Huntsville, and Brigham City.  The Wasatch Range was breathtaking.  Such a beautiful place. 

      Since we are moving tomorrow, we did laundry and food shopping.  There was some kind of fun carnival going on in the field adjacent to the campground.  It was the Summer Kick Off.  There were lots of kids activities, drawings, and food trucks.  It looked like fun.  We walked around looking at everything then returned to the camper.

      We wandered over to the fitness center to take a look.  It is a world class gym.  They have a 45 ft climbing wall, 2 racquetball courts, 2 basketball courts, aerobic and weight resistance machines, a weight room, and classrooms.  We were very impressed.  There is also an outdoor track right next to the campground.  Paul walks around it every morning.

2023 Jun 1 (Thu) – We drove to the Family Research Library.  The Mormons have a worldwide database on the population.  I was hoping they could help me trace my grandmother back into Ireland.  Aside from confirming her maiden name, I didn’t really find out anything new.  It was a little disappointing.

      After the library, we toured the state capitol.  There were four floors we explored.  The staircases were sweeping and there was lots of stone and granite.  The senate, house, and congress were all open to look in on.  There was nothing going on.

      Next stop was at the Gourmandise Café.  It was an interesting French pastry café.  We got a table outside on the patio.  We both got a grill cheese panini.  It was good.

      When we got back on base, we stopped at the BX to restock our libations.

2023 May 31 (Wed) – We are now in full on mode to complete our Alaska plans.  I have been making calls to campgrounds and vendors; Paul has been finalizing our map instructions and route planning.  I took time to pay the bills.  Gotta love that online banking!

      We went out for lunch at Phoenix House.  Back home, Phoenix House is a drug rehab house.  Funny this should have the same name.  We stopped at both Office Depot and Staples to get binders and tabs for the Travel Guide we are putting together for the Alaska Caravan.  We didn’t find all of what we wanted.  When we got back, I placed an order online for items to be picked up at Staples when we get to Great Falls.

      We drove into the mountains this afternoon.  What beautiful country this is!  We were going to drive through a pass but it was closed.  Probably some kind of land slide.  We drove through another pass but it wasn’t as nice as the one that was closed (Paul drove it while I was gone).  We stopped at a little café on the side of the road and got coffee and a muffin.  It was very nice.

2023 May 30 (Tue) – I got back from New York yesterday.  What a whirlwind trip it was.  I stayed with my sister, Susan, this time.  I saw the oncologist, ophthalmologist, gastroenterologist, general physician, and audiologist.  Everything is fine.  A colonoscopy found 3 polyps that were removed.  I got to visit with Miranda and her family and even took them out to dinner one night.  I played rummy cube with Susan and Bill almost every night and took them out to dinner the last night I was there.  There was a delay in my flight out of Denver because of thunder storms.  I finally got back home at midnight.  It was a very long day.  LaGuardia Airport is fantastic!  The construction and renovations have left the airport looking very futuristic and sleek.  It is also very large.  I had over 5,000 steps before I ever got on my plane in New York.   

      Paul worked on the RV and truck while I was gone.  He bought new tires for the RV, had the tires on the truck rotated, and had a tune-up completed on the truck.  He also worked on getting the slides shored up.

      Our forwarded mail arrived.  Unfortunately, a package we ordered did not arrive.  UPS transferred it to USPS and the base does not accept postal deliveries.  This mail thing can be so annoying.  We did get the package forwarded from the Iowa fairground.

      We did the laundry today, then went into town for lunch.  We ate at Famous Dave’s.  I had ribs and Paul got fried chicken.  It is good to be back together again.

20 May 2023 (Sun) – We waited to hear from the post office this morning.  We are having another “fun” experience with having our mail forwarded to us.  I sent a message to Escapees asking to our mail sent on Monday, May 15.  Then I sent a second message asking that they send it on May 16 by 2-day UPS or FedEx.  I got an email acknowledging the change and saying it would be done.  On Tuesday, May 16, I got a note saying the mail had been send out by postal service.  That usually means at least a week for it to arrive.  I sent an email saying that it was supposed to be sent UPS or FedEx and asking them to intercept the package.  They said they couldn’t but would pay for the return postage.  I got an update from USPS saying the package would arrive on Saturday, May 20.  That was the day we were leaving.  Arrrrggh!

       So I went to the Fair office to ask them to forward the package when it comes and they said they are closed on the weekends.  So we drove into town to the local post office.  I explained the situation and asked if they could stop the delivery and have us pick up the package on Saturday morning.  The clerk got on the computer to check the status of the package.  She found it was held for two days in North Houston, then sidetracked to Kansas.  It would not arrive on Saturday; maybe Monday.  I gave them our forwarding address at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

      We packed up and left Twin Falls, ID, at 10:15 a.m.  The drive was long.  We didn’t arrive until 2:30 p.m.  The scenery passing by was so beautiful – tall mountains, verdant valleys, open grassland as far as the eye could see.  It made the drive very enjoyable.

      When we arrived at Hill AFB, we were met by the camp host.  She gave us the campground map with rules and regulations and said the office would be open tomorrow.  We have a pull-through site with concrete pad and FHU.  Paul thinks the row we are in was added to the original FamCamp.  There are three rows of campsites.  The first two rows are back-to-back sites.  The third row is pull-through.  A row of trees separates the first two rows from the third row. A very big mountain range with snow caps towers over the town. It is stunning.

      Around 5:30 p.m. the power went out.  Someone said they thought a transformer blew.  We went into town for dinner.  Paul picked up some gas for the generator.  We got back, he pulled out the generators, got they primed and fueled, turned them on, and the camp host came by to say the power was back on.  At least we know the generators work.

      Upon reviewing the rules and regulations for the campground, we found that the base does not accept postal mail (like some other military facilities we have been at).  I called the Filer, ID post office and left a message explaining the situation and asking them to have the local post office hold the package for us.  Send it as a general delivery.  We will see what happens.

      And to boot, we thought Paul’s replacement credit card was coming in the package.  I got a note from Escapees showing the credit card came in yesterday.  So we have to get yet another delivery.

      I leave for New York tomorrow.  I will be gone for a week, returning on Monday, May 29.

This is actually straight up comic canon, but I love it so much that I have to expand on it a little.  In that...niche, that plateau, when Jean is Phoenix but hasn’t quite tipped over the event horizon of power, she becomes the only person who’s seen Scott’s eyes since he first gained his powers.  She’s never quite clear on what she’s doing, she doesn’t know and has an alarming thought that she might be in his brain far more literally than usual, but he smiles at her thoughtlessly.  Jean can feel that he’s a little dazed by the experience, he touches her face with poorly-concealed wonder, and then his hand lands in his hair and he says in delight, “Your hair actually is this color!”

“Of course it is,” Jean laughs, halfway to sitting in his lap with his glasses dangling from one hand.  “What, did you think ‘redhead’ was metaphorical?”

Scott flushes a little at the teasing, but he still has a lock of her hair between his fingers, turning it in the sunlight like he’s never seen it before.  His glasses are as transparent as anyone can make them, but Jean knows that he still sees the world through a film of scarlet, half because of the quartz, half because of his own uncontrolled powers.  It’s tricky to keep his optic blasts leashed, takes more of Jean’s concentration than she’d like, but it’s worth it to see the way he smiles at her, warm brown eyes crinkled at the corners.

Jean writes Scott a letter, in the handful of hours that she’s--herself, that she is Jean Grey, who grew up in New York and likes riding in convertibles with the top down on the highway and sometimes makes herself peanut brittle at three in the morning so that she doesn’t have to share, and not Dark Phoenix, beautiful and terrible and hungry.  Those hours of sanity were hard bought by the X-Men, by her family, and so she petitions Lilandra for paper and pen, and she writes Scott a letter.  Jean already has plans for this trial by combat.  She’s sorry about those plans.  But she can feel the fire chewing at the base of her skull, she can taste the iron-sweetness of a dying star on her lips, she wants--

She’s got plans.

The letter isn’t long, not really.  One page, unlined, with the polished cursive handwriting that Jean had drilled into her in middle school marching neatly across it.  It’s all the things that anyone ever wants to say.  I’m sorry, I wish it wasn’t like this, it’s not your fault.  She underlines it’s not your fault until her pen rips through the paper and marks the glass-smooth desk underneath.  Scott won’t believe her, but God, she wishes he would.

I could make him, Jean thinks idly, tapping her pen against the desk as she wonders what else there is to say.  I could make him believe me.  I could tell him, and explain, and he would understand, and then he would stay with me, I could make him stay with me, I could keep him forever, it wouldn’t matter what else I did, I could keep him--

Jean lets out a shaking breath that tastes like ash and hydrogen, and writes one more sentence.

I could never have lived with myself if I did anything else.

She signs it Love, forever, and writes her name for the last time.

Gutcanon

Before everything goes horribly wrong, Jean forges a mental rapport with Scott, a permanent link, one that will let her find him anywhere, let him call for her as easily as if she was in the next room.  It’s what finally lets him drag her free of Mastermind’s illusion, of Jean as the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club, much too late to make a difference.  It’s what lets him taste blood in his mouth when Jean’s control snaps and Phoenix’s teeth bite through her lip.  It’s what lets him feel the billowing heat of the star she swallows down, and what lets him say with assurance that Phoenix cannot kill what Jean truly loves, and then--

And then she’s Jean again, herself, tearful and shaken by what she’s done, what she’s become, and the rapport is closed.

It stays closed until the last moment, when she’s already given away her plan and started her suicide, and then Jean’s mind comes crashing back like the tide held away through sheer force of will.  It’s all fire and savage rage and joy and hunger and love, and Scott can’t tell what’s Jean and what’s Phoenix and what’s both--

The silence afterward is worse than anything he’s ever felt.

Jean is the kind of person who leaves fights with a lot of left-over adrenaline and tends to crash like a motherfucker if she doesn’t handle it somehow.  Scott is an extremely good sport about this, although he does enforce a very strict policy about even semi-public sex, so Jean has mastered dragging him into closets or bathrooms to kiss him dizzy before he can protest.  She has a very fond memory of managing to pin him to the inside of a vault door in a bank, one time.

Also, telepathic sex!  I have a lot of thoughts about it.  Safewords are for people who don’t have a continuously open door into their partner’s brain.  They do Stuff With Blindfolds because Scott finds it reassuring to know that he’s harmless.  Jean enjoys sensation play because...*gestures to the entire Dark Phoenix saga* she just does, that shit’s canonical.

I have to believe that Jean and Scott were able to raise Rachel for at least a couple years.  Please let these two raise one of their kids.  I understand that they’re the Skywalkers of the Marvel universe, but just let them! Raise! Their! Kids! In! Peace!

On a related note, AU where they find some assorted clones of Jean, courtesy of Sinister.  They’re all half-grown, five girls with bright hair and hard eyes--the oldest is maybe twelve and the youngest can’t be more than two--and Scott and Jean stand there for a moment, looking over the lot of them.

“We’re not perfect,” the oldest says in a clear, cool voice.  She reports her name to be Six.  “So we weren’t finished.  I was the closest--the most recent.  So he put me in charge.  Who are you?”

//I’m going to kill him,// Jean says silently, and Scott grabs her wrist before she can march back to Sinister and crush him.

“Let’s--okay,” Scott says.  “Let’s slow down.  I’m Cyclops.  Scott.  This is Jean.”

“We’re going to take you away from here,” Jean says, with the kind of absolute confidence that implies and god help you if you say we’re not, Scott Summers.  “You’re Six--how many of you are there?”

“Just us,” one of the middle girls says in a shy whisper, the one holding the little girl on her hip.  “I’m Four.  One didn’t--we’re not sure.  She didn’t make it.”
