#OTD in 1919 – The birth of Cairbre, the MGM lion, in Dublin Zoo. He wasn’t African or even Californian, he was a genuine Dub and was named after Cú Chulainn’s charioteer, or a High King of Ireland.
Cairbre, later re-christened Leo and the first MGM lion to roar on the silver screen. The problem is, there were at least 5 MGM lions, all of whom were rechristened Leo. The most likely candidate is this one, photographed being filmed in the early 1930s. Hear him roar (or gently growl) in the MGM video.
Cairbre is recorded in the RDS records as having sired 24 cubs, before being put down in 1944…

Attempted Sexual Assault (On a Minor)
Summary: The phone cracked in and out of the call, but the two women gossip through it all. Suddenly one gasps- remembering the juicy bit she heard on the news.
“Did you hear about this new incident about that… well he used to be a famous child actor- Jupe something?”
“The one in that Gordy’s Home thing? What happened now?”
“Oh! You won’t believe this! So he has a wife, kids, owns a theme park- living the dream so to speak- and he’s thrown it all down the drain!”
“How’s that?”
“He’s been arrested- accusations of murder. The trials still coming up but they don’t just arrest people willy nilly. I bet he did it, people have been going missing in this small town but his family is completely untouched.”
“Oh god that’s horrible- what about his kids? And wife? Are they speaking out on this?”
“ I heard there might be some interviews but they're all pretty tight-lipped- I mean if he’s a killer and all that I’d be scared to death too.”
The phone hung up suddenly, but she shrugged going back to her breakfast. She may think of the incident once or twice but she’ll never care for it any more than any other Hollywood Scandal

A visit to the vernal ponds
When I made this year’s first trip to Phoenix Park last week I was hoping to see a lot of wildflowers after all the rain storms we’ve had. I was a little surprised that the various pools didn’t seem to be overflowing, although I know that only the earliest flowers are blooming right now. All in all, it was a good outing, which included my usual side trek through the Lake Natoma Heights…

A fine set of fetlocks! by National Library of Ireland on The Commons
Via Flickr:
Captain W.J. Baird, Aide de Camp to the Lord Lieutenant sits astride a really fine looking horse in this carefully posed image from the Poole Collection. Now we know the name of the soldier so now we want to know is the name of the horse??? +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks everyone, for confirmation that Captain James Baird was aide-de-camp to Lord Wimborne, Lord Lieutentant in Ireland, and that he was in that post in 1917 (newspaper reports). O Mac suggests Busoni as the horse's name, but we'd need some hard evidence. We're a tough crowd. Oh, and we always love to see John Spooner waxing lyrical about movable boudoirs! Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Collection, Waterford Date: 1915 - 1917, most likely 1917 NLI Ref: POOLEWP 2734 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
