Myka: Somehow I don’t think Artie will be convinced but know that I support your pursuit for hazard pay, one hundred and ten percent…
Helena: I had very few doubts.
Myka: …even as your room sits completely sealed off with caution tape from the last explosive idea you had.
Helena: Hm. I suddenly have a couple extra doubts.

Wrote this in the tags of a post w info about Congo yesterday but tumblr wouldn't actually post it, so
While its impossible for anyone to keep up with the sheer level of horror happening everywhere in the world, we can try, even in the restraints of hell globalized capitalism, to do small things which may have an impact
We now live in a world which requires technology to function in society. Many of us who do care and know about what is happening in Congo likely feel dread when having to buy new tech - I sure as hell do
Something concrete we can do however is spreading this information to other people in our lives, and trying to change consumer practices
If you've got friends or family who buy a new phone every year or every two years, who are obsessed and excited with buying every new thing apple or whoever comes out with, try to talk to them about it. While companies making technology which does not last long enough is a problem, and while their obsession with creating 50 new phones and whatnot every year is a probelm, people buying into it and giving them money for it is what is driving the issue
If you have friends or family like this, please try to open their mind and change their practices. Try to get across to them to no longer buy every single or every other new generation. Try to explain to them ways to make their technology last longer (buying cases, being careful, using chargers which damage batteries less, or even replacing batteries instead of buying new phones and such). Try to propose buying either second hand tech, or older versions of tech. Try to make them care about the plight of people and worst of all little children in Congo who are being so horribly exploited for the whole world to keep this modernity up, and this "advancement" of technology at the rate that it is at.

I have a new phone and even though I bought it second hand so it’s not new it’s still wayyyyy newer than my previous one because I had that one for 9 years and I'm kind of struggling to use it. I hate new things. I don’t like it I want my old phone back >:(
