#1! Yesss. I've been wanting to ramble on this one. I've rambled about it to @blorbologist before but.

Whitestone is based in the north of Tal'Dorei, it is canonically pretty cold! It is also, as I've discussed recently pretty isolated and even before the Briarwoods, trade was dangerous through the Parchwood.

And yet. We know they make mead because Percy brings some for his pre-Thordak evening with Vex. And if they're making mead, that means they've got an active beekeeping practice. And if they've got an active beekeeping practice, and especially if they've got enough excess honey to make mead out of - that suggests they've got an available, affordable source of other sugar to feed the bees during winter if they've taken much of the honey themselves.

(Yes, they could have taken less honey so the bees can use their own supply - but if they're making not just mead, but a local speciality mead! then they have a system for beekeeping. So they have something to make sugarwater out of.)

And, further, despite this isolation and cold climate, despite that this is when they're recovering from the Briarwoods and the Conclave... Whitestone seems to have a ready supply of sugar if it was so feasible for Vox Machina to set up the Slayer's Cake. Relying on trade, especially through the dangerous Parchwood, especially during the rebuilding, especially at such distance - that's a risk. But the Slayer's Cake doesn't have those troubles and maybe it's because it's VM and Keyleth could pop to Emon and tree-teleport back but Vex is involved in the rebuilding of Whitestone and she understands economics so I'm inclined to think she'd want to support local traders.

And that means Whitestone has a source of sugar.

Now, lets take a sideways step - historically, sugar was expensive. Honey and fruit was used for sweetness in foods, but sugar was not very common - it was around but it was harder to obtain and expensive at that. Way back when, refined sugar came in a loaf and it was ground or chipped off for use. It was used rarely too - because it was expensive as hell. Even when it didn't come in a loaf, you had brown and demerara sugars that were rated by moistness until more recent developments. Sugar cane just wasn't so prevalent or available and the use of sugar beet to refine into sugar was, again, a more recent development.

And, let us be clear here, Whitestone is not in a climate suited to growing sugar cane. Indeed - it's a cold climate! It's a climate well suited to root vegetables.

It seems very likely to me that Whitestone grows sugar beet and refines sugar as a local business. They produce mead as a local speciality - so they have sugar to feed their bees when there's no flowers or honey. They're able to support, even when rebuilding, a bakery with a speciality in pastries and cakes. They have a source of sugar despite a cold climate.

Indeed, as Tal'Dorei recovers and Whitestone grows under the guidance of Percy and Vex and Cassandra - it's quite likely that huge amounts of Tal'Dorei's sugar is sourced from Whitestone sugarbeet.

For the ask game: 8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?

ooh, this is an interesting one. I don't typically think of writing fics for songs, though I do love a good story-song. that being said, I have written at least one fic loosely inspired by "Thorn" from Nightfall on Middle Earth, but that feels like easy mode.

I think when it comes to writing, loosely speaking, I might have to say it would be fun to write a xuexiao fic inspired by "This Is Love" by Air Traffic Controller, most probably modern AU, because that song is so profoundly xuexiao it kills me and I feel like writing something off it could be fun.

Reading-wise, I would read a fic based on "The Elf Knight" by Steeleye Span or "The Queen and the Soldier" by Suzanne Vega, which feel both more ripe for original fiction but I feel like someone could make an interesting AU of.

still hazbin, I'll go with Charlie/Vaggie this time, bc I genuinely love them and should talk about them more. I love the idea that in the days they first met, even after Vaggie's neck had healed she couldn't manage to speak for a couple months (your mind trying to cope with physical and mental trauma and guilt can really be something!) so she communicated with Charlie in writing. That's how Charlie started pronouncing her name with hard Gs, which Vaggie immediately decided she liked more.

"Dampak Sampah Pembalut Sekali Pakai bagi Lingkungan"

Sampai saat ini sampah atau limbah masih menjadi salah satu masalah kritis yang dihadapi oleh masyarakat Indonesia. Dari sekian banyak sampah, sampah rumah tangga merupakan sampah yang paling banyak dihasilkan oleh masyarakat Indonesia dan menjadi penyebab kerusakan lingkungan terbesar. Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (KLHK) mencatat, jumlah sampah di Indonesia mencapai 21,88 juta ton pada 2021. Berdasarkan sumbernya, rumah tangga menyumbang paling banyak terhadap sampah nasional.

Sampah atau limbah rumah tangga adalah sampah yang berasal dari kegiatan sehari-hari di rumah tangga. Salah satu jenis sampah yang dihasilkan oleh rumah tangga adalah sampah pembalut.  Pembalut merupakan alat sanitasi yang sudah tidak asing lagi bagi perempuan. Pembalut bagi wanita merupakan kebutuhan utama saat siklus menstruasi terjadi pada setiap bulan. Pembalut sekali pakai dapat dengan mudah ditemukan, praktis dan memiliki harga yang terjangkau sehingga mayoritas perempuan di Indonesia menggunakan pembalut sekali pakai sebagai alat sanitasi saat menstruasi. Namun, penggunaan pembalut sekali pakai ini memberikan efek yang tidak baik untuk lingkungan dikarenakan mengandung berbagai macam jenis bahan yang kurang ramah lingkungan.

Rata-rata wanita menggunakan pembalut sebanyak 4-5 sekali pakai dalam sehari. Dalam setahun dapat diperkirakan terdapat 300 pembalut per orang. Dalam seumur hidupnya, setiap wanita menggunakan lebih dari 16.000 pembalut, tampon atau pantyliners yang dapat diperkirakan terdapat 45 juta limbah yang wanita gunakan dan dibuang setiap tahunnya. Sampah pembalut di Indonesia mencapai 26 ton per hari. Dalam hal ini, sampah pembalut sekali pakai akan berakhir di TPA yang akan bercampur dengan sampah lainnya dan membutuhkan waktu ratusan tahun untuk dapat terdegradasi.

Apa Kandungan Bahan pada Pembalut Kimia Sekali Pakai?

- Chlorine (Cl2) yaitu Klor berbentuk gas berwarna kuning kehijauan. Klorin banyak digunakan di dalam pembuatan kertas, antiseptik, bahan pewarna, makanan, insektisida, cat lukisan, produk-produk minyak bumi, plastik, obat-obatan, tekstil, pelarut, dan produk lainnya. Klorin biasanya digunakan sebagai pembunuh kuman. Seiring dengan kemajuan teknologi bahan klorin digunakan dalam pembuatan pembalut  agar pembalut tersebut berwarna putih bersih Klorin dalam suhu kamar berbentuk gas dan termasuk unsur golongan halogen (Golongan VII) yang memiliki sifat sangat reaktif dan merupakan oksidator kuat yang mudah bereaksi dengan berbagai unsur. - Phthalates adalah ester pada asam phtalat yang digunakan sebagai plasticizer (zat ditambahkan ke plastik untuk meningkatkan fleksibilitas dan daya tahan). - Herbisida merupakan salah satu bahan kimia yang sering digunakan oleh para petani untuk mematikan tanaman pengganggu. Kata herbisida berasal dari kata “herba” yang berarti gulma dan “sida” yang berarti membunuh jika disatukan menjadi herbisida, berarti zat herbisida ialah zat kimiawi yang dapat mematikan gulma.  - Styrene merupakan suatu senyawa yang termasuk kedalam kelompok aromatic monomer tak jenuh. Wujud dan penampakan fisik styrene pada suhu dan tekanan ruang yaitu cairan tak berwarna dengan bau khas aromatic kuat. Senyawa ini tidak dapat dilarutkan dengan air namun dapat dilarut dengan methanol, eter dan etil alcohol. Produk styrene adalah dasar dalam pembuatan zat antara atau senyawa kimia lainnya seperti, Polystyrene, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, Impact Polystyrene Rubber, Styrene Butadiene Rubber, dan Unsaturated Polyester Resin. Styrene juga yang terdapat dalam kandungan material styrofoam.  - Chloromethane. Secara alami, Chloromethane terdapat pada lautan, dimana terjadi reaksi dari sinar matahari dan biomassa terhadap Chloride yang terkandung pada buih air laut.Sedangkan, Chloromethane yang pada saat ini dikenal adalah dengan mereaksikan Methanol dan Hydrogen Chloride. Dengan perkembangan teknologi dalam industri kimia, saat ini Chloromethane digunakan pada industri Silicone, Refrigerant, pembuatan Methyl Cellulose, dan lain-lain. - Chloroethane yang juga dikenal dengan nama Etil klorida adalah salah satu senyawa hasil hidroklorinasi asam klorida terhadap hidrokarbon tidak jenuh.Etil klorida merupakan salah satu bahan kimia yang digunakan sebagai bahan baku pembuatan etil selulosa yang berfungsi untuk meningkatkan elastisitas pada plastik sintesis. - Acetone  dikenal juga sebagai dimetil keton, 2-propanon, atau propan-2-on dengan rumus kimia (C3H6O). Aseton adalah senyawa berbentuk cairan yang tidak berwarna dan mudah terbakar, digunakan untuk membuat plastik, serat, obat-obatan, dan senyawa-senyawa kimia lainnya (Ambo, 2012). Saat ini, acetone lebih dikenal oleh kalangan wanita sebagai produk kosmetik untuk penghapus cat kuku atau kuteks.

Apa Dampak Sampah Pembalut Sekali Pakai bagi Lingkungan?

Pembalut sekali pakai mengandung bahan-bahan yang berasal dari berbagai macam bahan kimia yang dibutuhkannya waktu 500-800 tahun untuk sebuah sampah pembalut dapat 100% terurai. Penggunaan bahan-bahan kimia dalam pembalut sekali pakai ini memberikan efek yang tidak baik bagi lingkungan

- Kandungan gel dalam pembalut yang merupakan Super Absorbent Polymer (AP) Apabila terurai dalam air, zat kimia ini dapat berbahaya bagi lingkungan. Senyawa ini dapat menyebabkan perubahan hormon pada ikan. - Limbah yang mengandung klorin dapat mencemari lingkungan. Sifat klorin yang sangat reaktif akan sangat mudah bagi klorin bereaksi dengan senyawa lain dan membentuk senyawa-senyawa baru seperti senyawa organoklorin yang merupakan senyawa toksik dan dapat menimbulkan efek karsinogen bagi manusia. Organoklorin merupakan kelompok terbesar dari senyawa kimia organik yang merupakan unsur berbasis karbon yang mengandung satu atau lebih atom klorin. Pembuangan limbah yang mengandung klorin ke perairan, berpotensi mencemari perairan dan ekosistem yang ada di perairan. Selain itu senyawa klorin juga dapat menyebabkan masalah lingkungan yang bersifat global seperti CFCs yang terurai di atmosfer melepaskan klorin yang dapat merusak lapisan ozon. Senyawa organoklorin seperti trichloroethylene yang terurai di udara, juga memberikan kontribusi pada terjadinya hujan asam. Selain itu, pembakaran produk yang mengandung klorin juga akan menghasilkan senyawa lainnya seperti dioxin. Senyawa dioxin dihasilkan dari kegiatan rumah-tangga maupun kegiatan industri, serta pembakaran tidak sempurna. Senyawa ini sulit didegradasi sehingga akan menetap di tanah. Jika makhluk hidup terpapar oleh dioksin, senyawa ini akan mengendap di dalam tubuh dan dapat diturunkan pada generasi selanjutnya. Efek dari terpaparnya makhluk hidup oleh dioksin antara lain menurunnya sistem kekebalan tubuh, kanker, absisi daun, dan lain sebagainya, sehingga pengaruh dioksin terhadap lingkungan, biodiversitas dan kesehatan sangat merugikan. - Phthalates digunakan untuk melunakkan plastik oleh karena itu, bahan kimia ini muncul dalam produk plastik. Diperkirakan ada lebih 13.000 lembar sampah plastik setiap kilometer persegi di lautan. Salah dan satu faktor besar untuk masalah ini adalah microbeads. Manik-manik plastik kecil di banyak produk perawatan pribadi hanyalah salah satu pencemaran lingkungan yang mencemari sumber air. Ekosistem laut, sungai dan danau akan terganggu pada pola rantai makanan di dalamnya. Tumpukan plastik yang tertimbun di tanah tidak hanya mempengaruhi kesuburan tanah akan tetapi sangat mempengaruhi perkembangan tanaman di atasnya. Akar tumbuhan akan terkontaminasi dengan racun-racun yang berasal dari plastik dan akar tumbuhan terhambat menyerap nutrisi dari tanah. Selain itu, tumpukan plastik yang berceceran di tanah akan menghambat proses penyerapan air hujan ke dalam tanah. - Pestisida herbisida dapat merusak tanah dan mengurangi kesuburan tanah. Polutan berbahaya yang ditebar di tanah bisa berbahaya dan dapat memicu pada punahnya spesies hewan tertentu seperti cacing yang dapat menyuburkan tanah. Tak hanya cacing, banyak jenis hewan yang bisa keracunan oleh pestisida dan herbisida tersebut dan kemudian mati. 

Bahan-bahan kimia lainnya seperti styrene, chloromethane, chloroethane, dan aceton. Beberapa dampak buruk dari terkandungnya zat-zat kimia pada tanah atau lahan adalah penurunan kualitas tanah, sulitnya melakukan budidaya tanaman di lahan tersebut karena tanaman-tanaman sulit untuk tumbuh pada kondisi tanah yang tidak layak. Tidak hanya tanah, bahan-bahan beracun yang tercampur pada tanah juga dapat mencemari air, sehingga berpengaruh pada rantai makanan, dan menimbulkan berbagai macam penyakit. Dan jika terus bertumpuk akan menghasilkan senyawa-senyawa baru yang berbahaya dan pada akhirnya akan menghasilkan gas metana yang menyebabkan kenaikan temperatur di permukaan bumi dan 25 kali lipat lebih tinggi dalam menyebabkan pemanasan global dibandingkan karbon dioksida.

Dalam al-qur'an surah 30 (Ar-Rum) : 41 Allah berfirman :

 ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِى الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ اَيْدِى النَّاسِ لِيُذِيْقَهُمْ بَعْضَ الَّذِيْ عَمِلُوْا لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُوْنَ  

“Telah tampak kerusakan di darat dan di laut disebabkan karena perbuatan tangan manusia; Allah menghendaki agar mereka merasakan sebagian dari (akibat) perbuatan mereka, agar mereka kembali (ke jalan yang benar).” 

Dalam tafsir Al-Azhar karya Buya Hamka, dijelaskan bahwa Allah telah mengirimkan manusia ke atas bumi ialah untuk menjadi Khalifah Allah, yang berarti pelaksana dari kemauan Allah. Maka Khalifah itu mushlih, berarti manusia suka memperbaiki dan memperindah. Bilamana hati manusia telah rusak karena memiliki niat yang jahat, kerusakan pasti timbul di muka bumi karena hati manusia membekas kepada perbuatannya. Kemajuan teknologi tidak membuat bahagia, melainkan sebagai cahaya. Dengan teknologi, perikemanusiaan ditinggalkan, dan niat jahat bertambah banyak. Tampilnya kerusakan di bumi tak terjadi secara tanpa sebab dan tiba-tiba. Namun, merupakan hasil dari pengaturan Allah dan hukum-hukum-Nya. Sehingga, manusia bertekad untuk melawan kejahatan, dan kembali kepada Allah, serta beramal shaleh. Arti kata kembali pada ayat ini memiliki makna yang sangat dalam. Bukan maksudnya mengembalikan jarum sejarah ke belakang, melainkan kembali menilik diri dari mengoreksi niat, kembali memperbaiki hubungan dengan Tuhan. Jangan hanya ingat akan keuntungan diri sendiri, lalu merugikan makhluk lain. Jangan hanya ingat laba sebentar dengan merugikan bersama.  Berdasarkan tafsir di atas, dapat diambil hikmah bahwa sebagai manusia yang dijadikan khalifah oleh Allah wajib untuk memelihara lingkungan agar tetap lestari diantaranya dengan cara tidak banyak menghasilkan limbah yang akan mencemari lingkungan.  Untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, sementara ini terdapat berbagai macam produk-produk alternatif pengganti pembalut sekali pakai antara lain seperti menstrual cup/cawan menstruasi dan pembalut kain. Dari kedua produk tersebut, kita dapat memilih produk mana yang nyaman dengan diri kita. Kedua produk tesebut memiliki kelebihan dan kerugiannya masing-masing.

🔊 Concernant les jouets en matière naturelle, pour le bain, je suppose que les jouets en caoutchouc naturel font partie des jouets vers lesquels oriente le CHRU de Lille. Concernant les indications « sans phtalates » ou « sans PVC », comme le souligne Patrice Halimi, qui est Chirurgien-Pédiatre et co-fondateur de l'Association Santé Environnement France (ASEF), « ce type de mention provient des fabricants et ne donne pas d’indication sur les substituts choisis. ».

Concernant ces substituts, une étude de l’Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l'alimentation, de l'environnement et du travail (Anses), datée de 2016, a produit une évaluation de risques dont les conclusions sont assez rassurantes, pour les substituts qui ont pu être évalués. 📚

Des scientifiques sont partis de la base de données des molécules entrant en contact avec les denrées alimentaires pour chercher leur présence dans nos organismes. Leur évaluation atteint le double des estimations précédentes.

  "Polluants éternels, bisphénols, phtalates, métaux lourds, pesticides, composés organiques volatils… au moins 3 601 substances chimiques dont certaines particulièrement dangereuses pour la santé retrouvées dans notre corps proviennent de matériaux entrant en contact avec les aliments tels les emballages ou les ustensiles de cuisine.

  Ce décompte impressionnant est issu d’une étude inédite publiée mardi 17 septembre dans le Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology. Elle rend compte de « l’exposition généralisée de l’homme aux produits chimiques entrant en contact avec les denrées alimentaires [FCC pour food contact chemicals, en anglais] ». Une exposition largement sous-estimée : 3 601, c’est deux fois plus que ce que l’on pensait jusqu’ici."

  On sait que plus de 1 800 substances chimiques en contact avec les aliments (FCC) migrent à partir des articles en contact avec les aliments utilisés pour stocker, traiter, emballer et servir les denrées alimentaires. Cela inclut 194 FCC provenant de programmes de biosurveillance humaine, dont 80 ont des propriétés de danger très préoccupantes. Sur les 3 528 FCC figurant dans les bases de données métabolome/exposome, la plupart proviennent de la base de données Blood Exposome. Nous avons trouvé des preuves de la présence chez l'humain de 63 des 175 FCC classées par ordre de priorité et incluses dans la carte systématique des preuves, et 59 des FCC classées par ordre de priorité n'ont pas de données sur les dangers.

To be fair, I’m pretty open about the type of writer that I am (slow to update and perfectionist)—and I think it definitely shows. I like to think it’s a bit of an inside joke with my readers, haha: I might be slower than most writers to update but when I do, I tend to come back with a big lush feast to make up for it.

AH! True. I am such a foodie. 😂 The way to my heart is through my stomach; I have a buncha bookmarks on Yelp of just restaurants and bakeries/ cafes I’ve liked, sorted by cities. And if I’m not watching a show or movie or a C-drama, the YouTube vids I like to watch include how-to-make recipe videos while I make dinner. (For the parties I’ve hosted, I’m more known for my sangrias, salads, and filet mignon steaks with a “bordelaise” red wine reduction sauce.) I think it’s funny my appreciation of food shows in The Untold Tale but I guess it shows when Shen Yuan is commentating on the food presented so far. (For me, it makes sense because Luo Binghe is this canon blackened protagonist whose golden finger is his cooking skills for his wives, and even an older DILF Shen Yuan would be drawn like canon SY!SQQ to the Male Lead’s cooking.) Chinese cuisine is one of the cuisines that’s near and dear to my heart. There’s just a lotta regional dishes and drinks that are delicious, and I hope they’ll come across as appetizing in the story. Personally the ritual of having a meal can be a very intimate act, and it can be used as a great storytelling vessel (this is applicable to TUT and Truce mostly, but I’ve hidden small kernels of food scenes everywhere in my works). In my culture, we also tend to talk and do business over food; there’s a whole unspoken mianzi (saving/ giving face) “etiquette” to it.

Ah, I’m happy to hear my sense of aesthetics comes across as well-developed to others. That’s a very kind thing to say. I’m the type of person who adds a lotta small details to all my projects (irl and AO3) so I’m always—amusingly—trying down to pare down/ edit them down. So the thing is I think the PercyRipley Soulmate AU has a lot of potential - a lot of ways to dig into Percy's self-loathing, a lot of ways to interrogate the meaning and interpretation of Soulmates, a lot of fun trouble to throw in the way of Perc'ahlia happening but. Butbutbutbut.

90% of people will not touch with a ten-foot barge pole anything they even think might have RipRolo in. I can't blame them, I can understand why it might unnerve and even disgust, but also. That means that no matter how much love I pour into this fic, no matter that it almost certainly is going to end up Perc'ahlia (because they are my first ever proper OTP) it is going to be skipped over by most people.

Which I think is a shame! I think it's worth considering that, (to quote Do Revenge) some people are "fucked up soulmates". That doesn't make it good or healthy - it means that they have similarities, that they gel in some way, that they mirror each other. Perc'ahlia are a complement to each other, similar and different at once. Ripley is Percy's dark mirror. It could make sense, it would be awful, it would absolutely fuck Percy up in additional fascinating ways.

And goddamn but I wanna see it happen.

I know you're still busy with Mighty Nein, but are you watching The Legend of Vox Machina? And if you are do you have thoughts, favourites? Otherwise feel free to share something about the MN that you love. (Exited to get to them!)

I have watched Season One and the front part of Season Two of Legend of Vox Machina! and thus far it's something I'm enjoying but not hugely emotionally invested in, if that makes sense? I feel like some of that is that they are somewhat prone to triggering my secondhand embarrassment squick sometimes. (Which is also true of the Mighty Nein but I find it happens less often, particularly where I am at this point in the game.)

if I had to pick favorites though I have to say that the Vex & Vax relationship is pretty much tailor-made to appeal to me and that only got more true with recent developments (which I had been spoiled for, so I knew it was coming, but still). I wonder if it would be different watching the actual thing itself, because while the thing about Critical Role that makes it hard to get into (potentially) is the sheer time commitment, I think that's also part of what works to get me attached to the characters/dig into the story.

As far as something about the Mighty Nein that I love...I think one of the pleasures of watching it as a whole (now that I'm almost at the end) has been the character growth and relationship growth over time. Everyone's evolved and changed and developed, both in their relationships with each other and who they are as individuals, and it happened on such a slow time scale (for the most part) that it feels organic in a very pleasurable way.
