One of my most american moments was taking waaaaaaay too long to realize that in A Tale of Thousand Stars, when they say Phupha is a ranger, they mean like army ranger and not like park ranger. Was really like wow it's crazy that park rangers in the national parks in Thailand wear camo and carry guns and have such a large role in the functions of this rural village. The parks services really go all out on equipping their rangers huh. Kinda weird that Phupha isnt talking that much about wildlife conservation or nature but that's probably cause this is a romance story and conservation isn't the focus. Didn't know park rangers called each other stuff like chief but I'm not familiar with the internal hierarchies of that job.

amidst all the negativity i just wanted to add that despite all of my qualms with the special (from the necessity to the execution of it) pat and phupha scenes were everything. i loved how pat was having a lot of fun teasing the elder, but underneath the obvious teasing he is also creating a friendly space where phupha not only doesn't have to hide his queerness, he can actually speak about it if not flaunt it. and while phupha doesn't take it up, i still feel so fond of pat for being the sunshine puppy dog that he is, spreading his love and joy everywhere, my precious.
