I found this lichen in okemos, Michigan, USA. My best guess is starry rosette (physcia Stellaris) but it doesn't look 1:1 with the little field guide I have. Sorry the picture isn't as good as I thought it was. Curious what you think. Found on an old metal bridge in the forest ^_^

Ahh the Physcias. A delightful genus, but morphologically variable and so not easy to ID. Since it is growing on metal (wow that's incredible) I would think it is more likely a species that grows on rocks like Physcia albinea or Physcia subtilis, but lichens also like to mess with us so I could be wrong. It's too far away to make out many features so I can't say, but I am glad you are trying and making lichen friends along the way!

#2474 - Dufourea ligulata - Strap Flame Lichen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally described as Physcia ligulata in 1862, transferred to Xanthoria in 1983, Jackelixia in 2009 and finally Dufourea in 2013 after researchers got a look at its genetics.
On top of a stone fence at the B&B in Hāwera - absolutely typical habitat for the species, which grows on coastal rocks.

The flooding in Texas right now is honestly scary. My campus and most others in our network have been and will be shutdown for days. I just hope we can get thru finals next week. The shop I work at half-flooded (and now smells so bad). And my car has taken on water, soggy floorboards, signs of electrical damage, and the engine won't run for more than about 45 seconds. If you have loved ones down here, reach out to them, we've got several more days of rain ahead of us.
And a happy belated Beltane to those who celebrate. 💚🌱🌤🌿🔥🍃

Physcia biziana
Frosted rosette lichen
This gorgeous foliose lichen grows in irregular or rounded rosettes with narrow lobes that are folded and often overlapping. The upper surface is gray-brown and pale chalky-pruinose when dry, and looks bright green when wet. The lower surface is dull white to pale brown with simple white rhizines. It produces numerous apothecia which can be up to 2.5 mm in diameter. The apothecia have a prominent round or crenulate margin and a brown to black disc covered in chalky pruina. P. biziana grows on open trees and rocks in mild-temperate habitats in Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
