His intricate drawing depicts the last day of battle on July 3, 1863 and is modeled after a print by Kurz and Allison (1884), which was inspired by Paul Philippoteaux’s cyclorama painting (1883) @gettysburgnps. Why? German artist SEAK Claus Winkler whys. why he #painted this? Why he paints? - I can #collect myself, what i have painted, finding calm, control, ease, with in #collecting what i painted, forgetting the outside world. - Everything I paint is connected to a narrative, story i expierenced, I heard. Maybe from a childhood book, a adventure, a movie, a audiobook, a form I saw when being child, with in my youth, or sometime present. Like: #RobinsonCrusoe, German Soldier Storys/ photos from ww2/ ww1/ etc, #Pumuckl, #AugsburgerPuppenkiste, #PickettsCharge, #KlausStörtebekker, #RäuberHotzenplotz, #SirHenryMorgan, #Spqr Roman Crime detectives, #matchboxcars, #aeroplanedesign, #Medievallife, #paintings with in historybooks I bought myself, things I saw with in museums ( @technikmuseen_sinsheimspeyer , @deutschesmuseum @freilichtmuseumkommern , @deutschesmarinemuseum , @brusselsmuseums , @bataviastad ,…) somewhere in the world. - painted cause though i have here in cologne a whole house, which I use as a #studio/ #gallery, I have limited space. Thats why paint my paintings from allsides. - Iam painting so detailed because of many reasons. Here are few. Making it look good. Painting it into a #masterpiece so it although is perceived as being good/ extraordinary although with our a #gatekeeper, #gallerists, “ #expert “, #highsocialproof Person saying so. Because I like nice, good looking views/ things with in sight. Recreating, being closer in some form, with what I saw, and liked in the past. - in my dna from the last 2 generations from my fathers side. My father #technicaldrawings, as well as my great grandfather great #handwriting (both)/ Me having a bad handwriting compensating, doing it in my why with #drawing, painting. - because the letters with in my name do suggest by form and message from the words, to grab round forms. July 3, 1863 was a turning point not just for the battle at Gettysburg but for the Civil War. There were a total of 46,000 to 51,000 men lost over 3 days. July 4,1863 was the day that General Lee left Gettysburg and retreated to Virginia. The Civil War was the bloodiest war we have ever been in with approximately 620,000 lives lost. By the end of the Civil War, roughly 179,000 black men (10% of the Union Army) served as soldiers in the U.S. Army and another 19,000 served in the Navy. Funny fact: I’m an oil painter and I’m so inspired by so many amazing artist that came before me. So I love museums and could spend all day in them! So today spend the day going from museum to museum and I went for the first time to the @hirshhorn and one of my favorite pieces is the “Beginning” by @georgbaselitz I love the idea of flipping the initial interpretation and even the subjects in the paintings to let the art speak find a new meaning by itself. And the second painting called “Pickett’s Charge” by Mark Bradford because of how he uses his political point of view to depict in his art. My Year of the Book - Day 142: George R. Stewart was a thorough man, and he wasn’t afraid to question the status quo or what is regularly referred to as “common wisdom.” While visiting Gettysburg, Stewart formed the idea of writing a micro-history of one specific action of that battle, and “Pickett’s Charge” was born. GRS was not prone to hyperbole, so I love his intro to the book: “(If) the Civil War furnishes the great dramatic episode of the history of the United States, and that Gettysburg provides the climax of the war, then the climax of the climax, the central moment of our history, must be Pickett’s Charge.” Well argued, GRS. Let’s paint details with in the details, of the details. No pun intended. Yes Iam contradicting myself. Knowing that further details comes with the price of time. All the chads: ‘ This is the way. ‘ invested in smaller detail brushes. There are@a lot of things I love painting at a detail level. I observed that the thinking I do, my concentration, focus, thoughts, depth of thoughts is deeper. It’s like a part of me wants to work finer, smaller, so I can tap again with in that thought world. That perception/ connection of reality. Like a drug trip, just in positive healthy way. Or like person with Alzheimer, which via priming with there past, can connect with memories, a part of there brain, they usual don’t having contact with. Being a artist, living the studio life, aim travelling in my mind from the artiststudio. Less words, no talk, just walk, actions speak louder.
