ARYA STARK APPRECIATION WEEK 2024 ↳ Day 3: Overlooked traits
Natural leader
They rode north, away from the lake, following a rutted farm road across the torn fields and into the woods and streams. Arya took the lead, kicking her stolen horse to a brisk heedless trot until the trees closed in around her. Hot Pie and Gendry followed as best they could. Wolves howled off in the distance, and she could hear Hot Pie's heavy breathing. No one spoke. From time to time Arya glanced over her shoulder, to make sure the two boys had not fallen too far behind, and to see if they were being pursued.
A Storm of Swords, Arya I
Fond of nature
"When we were crossing the Neck, I counted thirty-six flowers I never saw before, and Mycah showed me a lizard-lion."
A Game of Thrones, Sansa I
Merciful
“[…] Do you want the water?" "Aye." The man swallowed. "And the mercy. Please."
When she came back, the archer turned his face up and she poured the water into his mouth. He gulped it down as fast as she could pour, and what he couldn't gulp ran down his cheeks into the brown blood that crusted his whiskers, until pale pink tears dangled from his beard.
A Storm of Swords, Arya XII
Feminist
"The Lannisters are proud," Jon observed. "You'd think the royal sigil would be sufficient, but no. He makes his mother's House equal in honor to the king's." "The woman is important too!" Arya protested.
A Game of Thrones, Arya I
Empathetic
She thought of Mycah again and her eyes filled with tears. Her fault, her fault, her fault. If she had never asked him to play at swords with her …
A Game of Thrones, Arya II
Left-handed
Arya took her right hand off the grip and wiped her sweaty palm on her pants. She held the sword in her left hand. He seemed to approve. "The left is good. All is reversed, it will make your enemies more awkward.”
A Game of Thrones, Arya II
Learned
It hurt that the one thing Arya could do better than her sister was ride a horse. Well, that and manage a household.
A Game of Thrones, Arya I
Observant
"Learn three new things before you come back to us," the kindly man had commanded Cat, when he sent her forth into the city. She always did. Sometimes it was no more than three new words of the Braavosi tongue. Sometimes she brought back sailor's tales, of strange and wondrous happenings from the wide wet world beyond the isles of Braavos, wars and rains of toads and dragons hatching. Sometimes she learned three new japes or three new riddles, or tricks of this trade or the other. And every so often, she would learn some secret.
A Feast For Crows, Cat of The Canals

“The swan was too rich for his taste.”
Re @jaydeewis's gorgeous artwork illustrating a meal from Tyrion XII, ACOK, @daenerysoftarth wanted to know why the roast swan appeared to be unplucked.
And that's actually one of the more interesting details found in some medieval feasts! The nobles were showing off their wealth by the way they served their food-- and one of those ways was to display meats and poultry as the animals appeared in life. You see this in the classic "whole roast pig with an apple in its mouth", but it was also frequently done with fancy fowl like peacock and swan. (Birds no peasant could ever eat-- hunting swans, for example, was poaching, a criminal activity, as even wild ones belonged to the crown.)
And so GRRM has this in ASOIAF, often referring to "peacocks served in their plumage" and similar. But how was this done? Well, it was really almost taxidermy. After the bird was slaughtered, the skin was carefully removed with the feathers intact, the flesh would be roasted, and then they would put the skin back on. (Sometimes with a prop to keep the neck straight, or for the peacock tail.) Yes, putting uncooked skin on cooked meat is terrible re food safety, and, well, this is why you hear about medieval people dying from indigestion. (But what health problems didn't they have.) Still, they were so careful with the process that the display method was called "a subtlety".
Although sometimes they had a little more care re food safety, and would make the peacock or swan meat into a pie, and attach the neck/wings/tail to the pie crust. There's actually a fascinating pair of paintings from the 1600s, after the turkey was introduced to Europe (as part of the Columbian exchange, and the topic of how a New World bird ended up being called "turkey" or "india chicken" in many languages is also fascinating but not the point right now), that shows two different but almost identically presented feast tables, one with a peacock pie and the other with a turkey pie, both "served in plumage":

If you're interested in the subject, here's a few sources:

She could stay with Hot Pie, or maybe Lord Beric would find her there.  Anguy would teach her to use a bow, and she could ride with Gendry and  be an outlaw, like Wenda the White Fawn in the songs. (Arya XII, ASOS)
Frey's chief contributions to the fight had consisted of contracting the  pox from a camp follower and getting himself captured by the White Fawn. The outlaw queen burned her sigil into his arse before ransoming him back to Sumner Crakehall. (Jaime IV, AFFC)
Interesting choice to call her an “outlaw queen”...

Season 6 Volume XII Thoughts
Once again, Jamal getting salty was dumb. Stop it. It's OOC, he's not Hamish.
Who on earth wants to do a heartrate challenge FIRST THING IN THE MORNING?!?! This is one of the biggest problems with the season - they've packed so many challenges into it and so much random drama with Amelia/the LIs/Grace and Ozzy that they don't have any chill morning scenes. The morning episodes should be the ones where we get to know the other characters and have group chats, the afternoon should be challenges (other than heart rate), evenings should be recouplings and more group chats and sexy games. and going to bed with our LIs!!
How have I had more bedroom scenes with ELLIOT who I've never said BOO to than with Roberto?!
I couldn't let Elliot dance on me, sorry. I just am sick of having to turn him down
Okay, the heart rate challenge. THE WRITING WAS SO GOOD?!!! Like, this was the first few episodes all over again but make them spicy!! The characters had personality, bounced off each other, and the dances were so well written! AI doesn't do explicit stuff so they were forced to use a human writer and whaddaya know, you get one of the best episodes of the season
I will say though that I'm disappointed I couldn't dance on all the guys. The first dance was amazing, but almost everyone else danced on multiple people? And we had to use a gem scene? Which I used to dance on the same person again anyway and it wasn't even as good?
Also the dancing was spicier than the underwhelming sex scene after the recoupling, which cost 29 gems, was a little confusing, and was over in a couple lines. Make it make sense
Amelia and Toby are so fucking cringe and I cannot. Girl you just met him. You're Grace on day 1 all over again. He's not even that great
The pool scene with our LI after the challenge was very cute. Roberto talked about missing his family when he's away so much and how he wants to start one of his own 🥺
Also, the mental image of him mowing the lawn shirtless??? YES PLEASE!!
I think Roberto brought up the hot tub date on at least 3 separate occasions in this volume
It's disappointing (once again) that after almost a whole season, every chat with my LI is about the same stuff over and over again. The hot tub date. The Snog, Marry, Pie challenge. The heartrate challenge. C'mon, Fusebox. You can't really think we want this? I know you love your AI because it saves you money, but we shouldn't be able to tell. We want to learn new things about our LIs, get to actually know them, and instead every gem scene is almost a carbon copy of the last one
Happy for Ozzy girlies who finally get to couple with your man. And ripping Grace a new one was great too. I can't believe she picked him AGAIN though if MC doesn't?!?! Girl...
Roberto with a baby next week? Roberto with a baby next week. EEK!

VI. favourite series: MHA, JJK, Chainsaw Man, Inuyasha, Samurai Champloo, um... that i can think of right now, in terms of anime. games are a different story, but that list is too damn long; DMC, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, The Witcher, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame - deadass there's too many i love to choose just one.
VII. last song: i can't read or type cyrillic, but this song by ghostemane
VIII. last series: mmm that i watched? The Boys
IX. last movie: some documentary i can't remember the name of tbh
X. currently reading: the guardians of the flame series for the thousandth time. came out in the 80s so a bit of a product of its time, but it's an excellent series. all the main characters are deeply, deeply flawed and there's some unfortunately realistic grit in there. the author also doesn't beat around the bush - very ' to the point ' style of writing. i think there's...8 books? in total. or 11. idk there's quite a few
XI. currently watching: my partner play Elden Ring
XII. currently working on: a very, very long wip that i'll never finish. it's at 140k+ words so far, but i think the characters got away from me a bit and i'm not sure how to reel them back in. it's very ambitious, lots of stuff going on there, lots of angst. but it's become unsatisfying to write as of late
