I love that the Spanish dollar was called a Piece of Eight. This is because people would cut the coins up to eight pieces to make change, often paying in "bits". Two bits would be a quarter of a dollar.
The Pieces of Eight was the world's first global currency and was one of the most saught after treasures for pirates.

If the "Barnacle Crew" had their own pieces of eight like the court, what would they be? And why?
I had to think sooo long and hard about this one! This is such a good question.
I feel like some of the crew have their own special items already so I almost feel like that’s a little too easy for me to headcanon lol.
Jean has a magical ring of keys in the last book so I’m gonna say that for him.
Tumen’s would probably be his astrolabe or maybe a necklace from his village or something.
Fitz would be his pocket watch or his spyglass.
Jack’s would be the beads in his hair.
Arabella is the one I still haven’t come up with!

A Child's Dream -A Hunt for the 1715 Treasure Fleet's Riches
A Child’s Dream -A Hunt for the 1715 Treasure Fleet’s Riches
It started about two years ago when Ed’s young niece and nephew, Capri and Cole, came to visit. On our trawler, Adrift, they found the map “Shipwrecks of Florida and the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.” They stared asking about shipwrecks and treasure and pirates. Ed and I had to study up. “…The 1715 Treasure Fleet was returning from the New World to Spain. At two in the morning on Wednesday, July 31,…

Pieces of eight

It’s all down to Robert Louis Stevenson, and his classic adventure story, Treasure Island. Something certainly fixed early on in many minds is an association between pirates and pieces of eight – in fact it’s an association made by huge numbers of people who couldn’t tell you what pieces of eight actually were. Still, there is a basic truth, in that something fixed firmly in the mind by that age is unlikely ever to go away. "Give me a child until he is seven and I will show you the man," was supposedly said by the founder of the Jesuits, St Ignatius Loyola, though it probably ranks among the most misquoted, misrepresented and abused quotations in the book. Pieces of eight were legal tender in the USA until 1857 Thousands of indigenous American Indians and African slaves died in the brutal conditions of the mines to support Spain's thirst for silver. This wealth came at a terrible cost to human life. The silver used to create the coins and finance Spain's armies and armadas came, above all, from the 'silver mountain' of Potosi in Bolivia. The inscription on this coin - King of the Spains and the Indies - refers to European Spain and the great new Spanish Empire in the Americas. Where did the silver for pieces of eight come from? The front of the coin is decorated with the coat of arms of the Habsburgs, the rulers of Spain and the most powerful family in Europe. In 1600 one coin would have been worth the equivalent of a modern £50 note. As the coins of Spain they were used across the vast Spanish Empire, stretching from South America to the Philippines, but were also used outside the empire as well. Pieces of eight were the world's first global currency.

btw fans bitching about sanji having a british accent because in the shitty usamerican dub he speaks american and they cannot contemplate anyone not speaking like they do: i do realize you can't tell because you don't know anything outside of your own borders but sanji speaks a very working class english accent infused with the actor's own actual immigrant spanish islander accent, which suits the character very well actually and perfectly tempers his snobbishness about food and the flowery french names of his signature moves with the knowledge that he's had to work really fucking hard for that knowledge and you are reminded of it every time he opens his mouth. so to all those whining and complaining you are invited to kindly get the fuck off
