We don’t really see depictions it Bangladeshi women in the UK a although maybe things are changing. She spoke no English but she was British. She looked so sad and I wanted to convey the deep sense of melancholy etched on her face in oils. The pencil sketch of the same woman is very different. Posting this painting makes me want to get my oil paints out I am actually planning my next series. Spending time at St Hilda's close to Brick Lane and being near the elderly was a real privilege; most of them must have passed away now. It's important to document these precious old faces. My new scroll is dealing with the war on the planet. I have never drawn dead animals before, or animals maimed by man, it’s more disturbing than making my war scrolls. An early photoshoot during my formative modelling days. So innocent and naive was I. Think I was 18 or 19 here. In the end I worked with three model agencies in London and Manchester. Used to appear on This Morning modelling outfits when Richard and Judy still presented... how funny is that. I never thought it was a big deal but I was the only Bangladeshi model on my agents’ books... things are slowly changing today. Wonder how things would have developed if Instagram had existed when I was a teenager? I remember when I won Miss Bengali in 1994 and came out of Theatre Royale in Covent Garden and people wanted my autograph it was so weird and bewildering, it must be such a pain in the arse to be famous. I knew there and then that it wasn’t for me. Name me one model who is also a seriously respected artist, writer and painter... it’s a such a vacuous, mind numbing profession in my opinion. Sitting in front of a mirror having make up slapped on your face and people styling your hair for hours is not good for your brain. And yet so many people want to be models... rather than use their brains and hands to create stuff... Image is everything, but is it? I have noticed that my old modelling photos or simply photos of me attract more attention than my work. What does that mean then? Maybe this is why at home I don’t give a toss about my appearance? 😂 Instagram is an interesting social experiment for me. A way to see all strands of my work and all facets of my personality in one space. There are some Instagram pages out there that just consist of endless images of the same person... it seems so narcissistic and yet those people often have millions of followers. I have drawn many landscapes and city scapes but every time I do a drawing of the #Rohingya refugee camps it always brings it home just how dire and desperate the situation is for these people. My new song ‘People come and go’, been fiddling with this new track for hours. Can anyone recommend music rehab I think I am addicted to painting with sound? And yeah that’s me singing and playing guitar... I am still learning so be forgiving. I am sort of bricking it because I have to have the first album ready by the end of the month for my record company #pulsesoundworks and I can’t stop making frigging music... what to do? I can think of worse addictions though. Thinking about my impending performance in London this July at Shoreditch House and Rich Mix.
