Hallowtober day 22: drowing

red pikmin - spicy at first but quickly fades. no real flavor

yellow pikmin - sharp, pungent, really hits the back of your tongue

blue pikmin - not much flavor, similar to lettuce, very watery

purple pikmin - mild clove flavor, incredibly chewy

white pikmin - sour, numbs the throat, safe in small portions

rock & ice - inedible, too little tissue to consume

winged pikmin - mild, but high in potassium, sprinkle generously on salads

glow pikmin - sweet but low in mutrients. glow sap tastes the same but highly nutritious

red are hard to cook fire proofed fuck. god damn this.. blue is. well. chewy. It can fucking explode if you cook sometimes like when people set a spaghetti on fire. need to boil it with water but it keeps drinking the water fast whatever just stuff vegetables into its fucking mouth. yellow its as if poprocks candy that olimar small kids like.

purple is so difficult I got bored. I think they are similar to big bread bug they have much to think about but much less to the taste. If you will. rock you cant unless you crack outer carapace. If weakened possibly crumble like......chaga mushroom. Turn it into a tea Maybe . Fuck your teeth if you eat it raw. pink look like brittany it made me homicidal so I let it go but the wings were gone. So. It crawled darkly. Don't eat ice there are much better uses like meat freezer or drink coldification. Or you can shove it into olimars mouth when he starts having a "freak out attack" and he gets confused so it stops. Glow oikmin you can't eat I tried. Take their house goo. And then you'll see for yourself.

Pikmin 4 Planet Generalizations

I added this to the big Pikmin 4 Character Trivia post, but I know most people aren't going to be checking for updates on that (btw, there's been a few, so check that out if you're interested).

These are observations I've made about similarities between castaways from the same planet. Since Pikmin has made a habit of saying that certain traits are inherent to specific races/planets, such as the Koppaites' inability to plan and being picky eaters and the Hocotatians' preference for vegetables and seeking treasure, it may be safe to say that similarities found between castaways from the same planet might be reflective of their respective races.

However, this is all speculative on my part. Do not take any of the following as fact.

I also haven't included any castaways/planets where there was only 1 castaway to get info from since unless they explicitly said so, there's no way to determine what traits are theirs and what could be attributed to their race/culture. Info like that would be a part of the main trivia post.

Sozor (Dalmo, Grace, Horatio)

Have anti-social personalities. Dalmo prefers creatures to people, Grace seems disinterested in society as a whole, and Horatio is inept at social interactions (compared to other castaways).

Flukuey (Jin, Molly, Dash, Patch)

Have unstable professions and/or are adventure seekers. Jin is an explorer, Molly is a streamer of limited success, Dash is a spelunker from a well off-family, and Patch is unemployed but purposefully puts himself in dangerous situations for the thrill.

Ooji (Francois, Kingsly)

Love flowers/plant life. Francois studies plant-life, and Kingsly is a florist. Given that Ooji is also said to have "lush jungles," flora may be very important to everyday life on the planet.

Koodgio (Lapi, Boris)

Artistic types. Lapi is a painter and Boris is an author.

Siguray (Shnauz, Kit, Osa)

Interested in the qualities and history of materials and items. Shnauz appraises treasure, Kit is interested in minerals, and Osa is interested in archeology.

The following are castaways where it's difficult to determine if their similar traits would be found in their race due to other factors:

Ogura (Sy, Pitunia)

Both are interested in studying the onion and their environmental factors surrounding it, but both are also a part of the Research Task Force, a group made of individuals that are interested in studying the planet in general, so it's hard to say if this would be something inherent to all Ogurains, or if they just happen to have a mutual interest in this area of study.

Enohee (Ren, Frise, Muggs, Wolfgang)

3 of the 4 are a part of the same TV crew, so would have common interests by default. Arguably all 4 are interested in entertainment as Ren was on a cooking show, so TV might be a very important industry to Enohee.

Neechki (Kaia, Sheeba, Keesh, Mika, Chewy)

4 of the 5 are in the same club and would have similar interests by default (and even then, Mika admits that she knows very little about planetary science), and Chewy has little in common with the rest of them. However, Chewy notes that Sheeba also resembles her boss, so it's possible that the "small" body type is very common (but not exclusive) to Neechikians.

Nijo (Santi, Bernard)

Both became pilots and were prone to changing jobs frequently, but their "Dynamic Duo" shtick of always being a part of each other's lives is played as a joke, so their similar lives/interests may not have anything to do with their race/culture.

Planets where I couldn't identify a common thread:

Enohay (Puddle, Vonda, Bernise)

I would have said creative/artistic fields due to Puddle being a stylist and Vonda being a singer, but I don't think a fortune-teller really falls under that umbrella. Perhaps they're all "dramatic"?

Conohan (Twyla, Chowder, Alpin, Fawks, Beaux)

They all have different professions and interests, two are siblings, and none have especially similar personality traits. In a sense, I suppose this would imply that Conohan is a very diverse planet.

Ohri (Yonny, Dingo)

Neither seems to have much in common with the other aside from being in the Rescue Corps.

Giya (Shepherd, Collin, Russ)

Another diverse group of only rescue officers. However, given the stark difference between Collin's and Russ's financial situations, there are implications that Giya has significant class inequality.

Blue - like a peppermint flavored fruit gusher

Yellow - a slightly sour Cherry pepper

Purple - pops in your mouth like a plump grape but the core is chewy like licorice

White - salt and vinegar chips but sprayed with Lysol

Glow - also a fruit gusher but it tastes like glow stick juice

Big ole' relationship headcanons chart B) For these I just went with what would give me the best story telling options (or what Just sounded outright entertaining) while occasionally taking cues from canon.

A few corrections:

Arrows with two points are supposed to mean the relationship is mutual, while arrows wirh just one point means it's one-sided. Mentor/Mentee relationships are a weird exception where the arrow is meant to always go from the mentor to the mentee... I only did this right for Puddle and Vonda being mentors for Santi lol. Thankfuly the other mentor/mentee relationships involve the students so it should be easy enough to tell what I mean.

On a similar note; Pitunia and Dalmo's friendship is meant to be mutual

Alph would be friends with Collin and perhaps Russ, but the chart was getting cluttered and I couldn't fit the arrows.

Similar goes to Brittany; she'd probably get along with Yonny, Kingsly, and François.

And again, Boris should be friends with Frise but I ran out of room LMAO

I know this is a little tricky to read and also has some intresting headcanons, so if you have any questions feel free to ask! :3

Vonda and Puddle have kinda just declared themselves as Santi's mentor. Specifically when it comes to romance and gender shenanigans.

Frise, Boris, and Lapi are all friends. Frise is also friends with Vonda. Frise keeps trying to get the other two to meet Vonda but they're intimidated bc she's famous.

Idk when exactly on the time line this takes place, but eventually Bernard and Santi get that situationship sorted out. Russ gets over Muggs and gives a relationship with Molly a shot, much to her delight.

Maybe Kayz will be with Chowder, maybe not. Haven't decided the outcome there. Honestly leaning towards them staying friends.

Pitinia just finds Bernise annoying lmao.

When I say "your guess is as good as mine" I really do mean it LMAO. I feel it means something slightly different for every relationship I used it for.

anyone here who was a leafling is part of a support group. They don't all consider each other friends but they do trust each other a lot.

The three students inherently trust the other people in Mika's friend group and will go to them for advice and such.

Olimar is friends with the entire Rescue Corps (one of his arrows is meant to be pointing at the friend group as a whole) but is particularly close with Bernard.

Santi and Chewy are part of the same friend group, but again are a bit closer to eachother than the other members

The entire Research Task Force considers eachother friends. Once again tbough, Komo and Twyla are particularly close. Pitunia and Sy are particularly close. And Kit and Osa are particularly close.

Most of these relationships were forged during the events of Pikmin 4.

While playing Pikmin 4 yesterday, I got a dialoge from Chewy (unlocked after you complete her quest) where she says that Santi has a habit of jumping jobs when he runs into his "rival" (re: Bernard). We know they both worked for boxed lunch vendors in the past. Santi had gone on to be a fortune teller, cafe manager, and script writer (and maybe more I forget).

This thus implies that Bernard has ALSO had these jobs, or adjacent positions.

Shepard also says that Bernard became a pilot because of Santi, but was one before Santi was (having been his instructor). This doesn't really fit in with my main point it's just cute and I wanted to point it out.

These two have led FACINATING lives and we only get to see the tip of the iceberg with it. I need a spin-off comic just about these two, please.

Weird Pikmin 4 Thing/Speculation

I don't really count this as a spoiler, so read at your own risk, but it looks like certain castaways have different hair/suit colors on different playthroughs. Of immediate memory, Molly, Alpin and his brother, Grace, and Chewy all had different hair colors in my game from other LPs I saw.

I'm not quite sure what's causing it though. At first, I suspected that maybe it changes depending on your suit color, but literally every person I've watched play this game has used a different suit color, so I can't confirm that theory.

(Light spoilers ahead)

My alternate theory depends on whether all the castaways that can have random colors are also all leaflings. It could be that leaflings are cured in a set-order, but their colors are dependent on the order you rescue them in. For example, if you don't do the first dandori challenge in the Sun-Speckled Terrace, which is hosted by a pink leafling, will Dash, seemingly always the first leafling cured, still have pink hair?

Edit:

It seems I'm partially correct, but I still need to do more testing.

First correction is that Dash is not always the first leafling rescued, and besides that I confused him with a different castaway, and he wasn't even pink in my main game. In my game he was purple, but in my test file he was blue. Furthermore, other leaflings that I rescued in the test file always shared their hair color with the leafling cured, so there's at least some correlation there.

Second, Corgwin and Jin, two other leaflings and hosts of the Dandori Challenge/Battle practice, were purple and pink respectively in both save files. I'll need to test if they still appear if I don't rescue any pink or purple leaflings. Similarly, will it be impossible to save Bernard if you don't get any purple leaflings, or will his hair change color too?

Edit 2:

Corgwin and Jin can be any color, as I found an LP where their Jin was blue.

I did a test of rescuing and curing every possible leafling except a single purple leafling to see if the game would give me Bernard, but it seems like you do need at least 1 purple leafling for him to be rescued and unlock Hero's Hideaway.

So I'm gonna put a stamp on it: Every single leafling castaway has the possibility of being different colors and are rescued in a set order, except Bernard, who must be revived from a purple leafling. I haven't yet determined if the order you rescue the leaflings in as any effect on what color they'll be, or if the castaways have a preferred color and will be revived from those color leaflings if they're available.

Edit 3:

Okay, here's my latest observation about this.

Typically, all castaways will wear suits that match their hair color. For example, the purple haired Schnauz also wears a purple suit. This is true unless the player's suit color would have matched the castaway. For example, the green haired Dalmo will wear a red suit if the player character's suit is green. This changes even if the player changes their suit color through Puddle mid-game. It appears that whenever there is a suit color conflict, then the suit will default to red.

There are a handful of exceptions to this rule, notably characters with red hair will not wear red suits unless forced to if the player's suit color matches their default.

For example, the red heads Vonda, Kaia, and Osa by default wear pink, purple, and orange suits respectively, even if the player's suit is not red. This was likely done to set them apart from Olimar/the Red Leafling, whose suit has red accents and/or were chosen around the idea that the "canon" Rescue Corps color is red, and thus can't be shared with any castaway. However, these exceptions will still follow the first rule if their default color is being used by the player. For example, Vonda will wear red if the player wears pink.

With that in mind, it's probably safe to say that in most cases, the leafling castaways' "canon" hair color would be the same color as their suit, as this is always consistent.

I've still yet to test if the castaways will use up their "canon" color leaflings if they're available, although I believe this may be false as I recall that someone had once rescued Chowder and Alpin together, whose suits are blue and pink respectively, but interestingly their hair colors were swapped as pink and blue.

Edit 4:

I can now confirm that leaflings will not use their "canon" color, even if that color leafling is available.

I rescued almost all leaflings in the first 3 areas. By the time I started curing leaflings, I had a single green leafling and several pink and purple ones, but Dash, who has a green suit, still got rescued as a purple leafling. Unfortunately, I can't remember if said purple leafling is the first one I rescued on this file (though I'm positive that it was the leafling taken by Olimar in the Sun-Speckled Terrace, so there's a high likelihood that it was), so I still can't determine if the order you rescue leaflings in changes the castaways' hair color, or if their default colors just don't match their suits the same way the regular castaways' do.

Edit 5:

Alright, I think I can more or less confirm that leafling castaway hair colors correspond to the order you rescue them in except the early game where if a purple leafling is available before you rescue Bernard, then the game will use them all up until Bernard is rescued, after which all other castaway colors should be in rescue order.
