It's been quite a long time since the last update, but I haven't abandoned this challenge, I'm learning as planned. I just didn't have time to make an update. I've finished the design of an unstabilised power supply (which is a part of this course). The second photo shows a PIR motion sensor, that will be used for a cat fountain, so that the pump only starts running, when one of my cats walks nearby.
The use of occupancy sensors in public buildings is an excellent example of how technology can be used to reduce energy usage and improve energy efficiency. By using these sensors, public buildings can reduce energy consumption, save money on energy bills, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Microwave vs PIR Sensor, Which Should You Choose? For outdoor floodlights with sensors, both are more common types, and the final choice depends on these factors.
To detect motion, microwave sensors don't need a precise line of sight. Therefore, they are more suitable for oddly shaped rooms and areas with many obstacles. They also don't rely on thermal signals, making them more reliable in hot environments where PIR sensors may not be effective. Microwave sensors are also significantly more sensitive, making them ideal for situations where very little motion must be detected.
Advanced controls can also allow precise settings for a parking lot or warehouse lighting layouts. In these cases, advanced control and precise sensing are required, making motion sensors a viable option.
On the other hand, PIR sensor lights are much more efficient for garden and home protection. However, they may not be suitable for placement in very open areas.
PIR sensor lights are often the best choice for outdoor security lighting. Because they only detect motion from living bodies, they are less likely to cause false positives. Microwave sensors, on the other hand, can be configured to only detect the movement of objects the size of a human body, although this is usually done before the sensor is put into the light.

To ensure the safety and security of our homes or anywhere, it is essential we install alarm systems. Motion sensors are one of the essential components of these systems. We can also employ PIR (Passive Infrared) Sensors for doing the same. HC-SR501 is a low-cost PIR sensor that can detect the presence of humans or animals by sensing the Infrared Radiation coming out of the body. Its sensitivity can be controlled by sensitivity control potentiometer and it also has an onboard signal conditioning circuitry and Fresnel Lens to improve its field of view. It is used in Motion Activated lights in bathrooms, halls, rooms, etc. in alarm applications, etc.
Proximity sensing is a very common application in electronics.
There are several ways to accomplish this. The most common way is by using a PIR sensor. PIR Sensor senses the change in ambient infrared radiation caused by warm bodies. I have already covered this in my Tutorial No. 5: "PIR Sensor Tutorial - With or Without Arduino". However, since PIR sensors detect movement from living objects, they can generate false alarms. These sensors are also inefficient in hot environments, as they rely on heat signatures.
The other common methods of proximity sensing involve, using reflected ultrasonic or light beams. Using these sensors, the intruding object is detected by the reflected beam back to its source. The time delay between transmission and reception is measured to calculate the distance to the object.
In this tutorial, we are going to look at another method of proximity sensing using "Microwaves" and "Doppler Effect". In my hand is an inexpensive RCWL-0516 Microwave Radar Motion Sensor. The RCWL-0516 microwave sensor detects "any movement" from "any object" and does not rely on heat, making it more reliable in hot environments. I am going to use this sensor to create a Geo-fence around my house to detect motion and get notifications.
