Drawing upon childhood memories, Manny Vega’s “Sábado en la Ciento Diez (Saturday on 110th Street)” (1996) at 110 St (6) station captures the joyous, colorful atmosphere of la ciento diez. The four mosaic panels—“Earth,” “Air,” “Fire,” and “Water”—depict scenes one would expect to find in the East Harlem neighborhood. In “Earth,” a street vendor sells bananas, plantains, papayas, avocados, and coconuts. “Air” illustrates a typical summer-in-the-city activity: children playing under the spray of a fire hydrant while a piraguero shaves a block of ice to make tropical fruit-flavored snow cones of guava, papaya, mango, and tamarindo. Shangó - a deity from the Yoruba pantheon - embodies Harlem's West African roots in “Fire,” dancing to the beat of three bata drummers. In “Water,” an elderly woman represents motherhood as she carries a bouquet of flowers and leads a child by the hand from a neighborhood botánica.
Vega’s work is celebrated in “Byzantine Bembé: New York by Manny Vega” at the Museum of the City of New York. On view through December, the exhibition highlights the artist’s unique style, dubbed “Byzantine Hip-Hop,” as well as his dedication to sharing stories of community and the diasporic experience.

on this fine munday i would like to confess one of my most shameful secrets
as some of u may know, i have never been the biggest fan of lin manuel miranda. in fact, for a long time, for various reasons, i was a steadfast anti. now, i still don't know if i consider him the genius everyone else seems to, but i recognize he's not a hack, u know? i'll give him that. this isn't what that's about tho. this is about when i watched in the heights (2021).
i was already familiar with some of the music, but had no real interest in it up until the movie came out.
what happened next may shock you...
the instant lmm came on screen as the piraguero, i fell in love LMAO
idk what it is about that damn tio but he is hot girl coded? the way the camera lingers, showing his body before his face, the dance moves with the emphasis on the hips, like his little bend and snap???
i'm so mad, idk how or why it happened but?
like DAMN that LOOK in his EYES what the HELL is this ALLOWED

The Who's Who: Cast of Characters
Tumblr media
Usnavi (Anthony Ramos) → moved to New York City with his parents at the age of 8; has lived with Abuela Claudia since the death of his parents; runs a bodega in Washington Heights, but dreams of moving back to the Dominican Republic to restore his late father’s bar; has a huge crush on Vanessa
Abuela Claudia (Olga Merediz) → never had children of her own, but becomes the matriarch of the entire block
Kevin Rosario (Jimmy Smits) → owner of the local cab company, Rosario’s Car Service; everything he does is for the benefit of his daughter, Nina – even if it means selling his business
Nina Rosario (Leslie Grace) → the first of the Rosario family to attend college; feels overwhelming pressure from her family and the community to succeed; her experiences at Stanford leave her questioning whether she wants to continue her education there at all; like a sister to Usnavi
Benny (Corey Hawkins) → runs dispatch at Rosario’s Car Service; broke up with Nina before she left for Stanford because he didn’t want to stand in the way of her success; heads back to work in the middle of the blackout after seeing the way the community is struggling
Vanessa (Melissa Barrera) → works at Daniela’s salon, but dreams of leaving Washington Heights to become a successful fashion designer; despite saving up money to move to a new apartment downtown, she is unable to do so without a cosigner; doesn't make her feelings for Usnavi clear until the day before he's set to leave
Sonny (Gregory Diaz IV) → works at the bodega with his cousin, Usnavi; his undocumented status crushes his dream of attending college one day
Daniela (Daphne Rubin-Vega) → owner of a Washington Heights salon that has been priced out of the neighborhood
Carla and Cuca (Stephanie Beatriz and Dascha Polanco)→ work at Daniela’s salon; always know the local gossip and share it with their clients
Alejandro (Mateo Gómez) → a lawyer who helps Usnavi buy back his father’s bar in the Dominican Republic, as well as begin the application process for Sonny to become a US citizen
Graffiti Pete (Noah Catala) → instrumental in breaking Vanessa’s creative rut and in inspiring Usnavi to stay in Washington Heights
Piraguero (Lin-Manuel Miranda) → sells piragua in Washington Heights, but finds himself in competition with a Mr. Softee vendor

Things I Found Noteable in the ITH Movie (ft. spoilers)
Anthony COMPLETELY made Usnavi his own! Ok king I see you!
The pothole being a record?
I was lowkey expecting we'd be queerbaited but thank GOD we weren't
Dani and Carla just,,,, being domestic,,, Carla on Dani's lap at the pool,,, slow dancing in the apartment,,, good for them ❤️
Usnavi and Kevin's shared hand move on "Are we gonna eat!" ....uncle/nephew rights
The camera work! The editing!! The colors!!! The choreography!!!! Everything is so electric!!!!!
"Why is the fandom so obsessed with Sonny?" *watches the movie* "Oh..."
The title cards with the temperatures
Vansnavi being the main couple instead of Benina actually worked really well! I was a bit sad we saw less of Nina, but Vanessa being developed as well as her relationship with Usnavi made up for it.
I'm so glad we know exactly why Vanessa wants to go downtown! Sis has a plan
Nina's hair getting more and more curly
Leslie Grace's take on Nina was very different than the ones I've seen before but I loved it!!!
lol the Hamilton reference
Piraguero JOMPED on that truck
Also... Lin isn't that bad of a singer. Fuckin chill
My brother thinks he was like a Sephardic Tevye and I agree tbh
The dialogue feels so organic and real, especially with Usnavi and Vanessa in the kitchen
My heart kinda broke when Nina revealed she got searched
All of these moments of everyone just being a family,,, Claudia watching them and dying peacefully because she doesn't need to take care of them anymore, not when they all have each other
Paciencia y Fe as Claudia's journey to death
It's such a quick moment but Claudia being robbed in the middle of her solo 😤 sir pls give the lady her purse back
Also she looked so scared when they were yelling at her to clean up 😭
Sonny having a backstory, with his deadbeat dead and being undocumented
It also gives Nina more of a motive to go back to school
Benina dancing on the building gave me a mini heart attack
Vanessa and Usnavi being former classmates
The beach transitioning into the bodega!!
Vanessa and Unsavi and their daughter being the cutest family ever???
This was so fucking good I'm losing my mind

I might just be overthinking it, but I noticed something about Piraguero from In The Heights. I recently watched a video by The Take on YouTube about the difference between the male gaze and the female gaze. Great channel, highly recommend it. According to the video, one of the many examples of the male gaze can be how a woman character is introduced on screen. Often at times, before the camera shows us her face, it shows us her body. The frame will scroll up her body, beginning either from the waist or feet. At the beginning of the song ‘Piragua,’ the Piraguero is introduced on screen in a very similar way, from his waist up to his face. Not only that, the way he dances in the scene could be considered somewhat sensual, what with the hip motions, particularly the way he bends down next to the Piragua cart. It reminded me of the ‘bend and snap’ from Legally Blonde. He is meant to be attractive. He’s middle aged, wears a polo shirt and cargo shorts, has a softer body type and he’s still presented as attractive to the audience. I find it fantastic, extremely refreshing, and overdue as hell. I personally think he’s hot and I love him. ❤️🔥❤️🔥

Thank goodness warm weather is finally here!
Manny Vega’s “Sábado en la Ciento Diez (Saturday on 110th Street),” (1996) at 110 St (6) station puts us in the #perfectsummer frame of mind. The four mosaics – Earth, Air, Fire and Water – represent @mannyvega.nyc’s childhood memories, and the joyous, colorful atmosphere of la ciento diez. Air (seen here) illustrates a typical summer-in-the-city diversion: Children playing under the spray of a fire hydrant, while a #piraguero shaves a block of ice to make tropical fruit-flavored snow cones of guava, papaya, mango, and tamarindo.
