Ben felt like he couldn’t breathe. Maul was nothing more than two pinpricks of yellow light, two merciless suns half a galaxy away. He saw Anakin on the shores of Mustafar, trying desperately to claw his way up the bank. He remembered grief like a ragged wound in his chest, the choking smell of sulfur in the air, the unbearable heat of the magma lake.

 “And what am I supposed to be admitting to?” Ben heard his own voice as if it were coming from behind a wall.

“You chose where to cut with purpose. You wanted me to live long enough to feel what you had done, and for all you pretend at righteousness, you relished my agony,” he seethed.

 He had wept as he watched Anakin writhe and struggle. He could feel each death echo in the Force as he stood on that hill, baking in the furnace-like heat. Thousands of lights flickered and dimmed before blinking out forever. Gaping holes firmament remained, and the living Force shuddered and twisted before it collapsed in to something wholly unrecognizable. The galaxy as Ben knew it had been unmade. He could have ended Anakin’s suffering, but Ben had wanted him to feel the horror of what he had done, even if it was just through the lens of his own pain. It was only right that he should.

Ben closed his eyes, and he nodded once. When he opened them again, Maul was gone.
