how many alarms they have set: unlike normal people, Edgar doesn’t set alarms to help him stick to a schedule; he sets alarms to remind him to take a break. So, two -- lunch time and to end his work day. Both of the alarms are mostly meaningless, though.

Codie waved him off. A momentary lapse in being overly protective over the one person that he was stuck in this world with was all that she reduced his words to rather than actually believe that he meant them. Too much had been exposed since they’d woken up in this world that was upside from their own, things were wrong everywhere and mostly out to kill them when they were found out to not belong.

She would be quiet and careful, as usual, but she needed a break from being so close to someone who was turning out to be a complete stranger despite all the instances that she could list off on both hands with having seen him around campus. He was a singer. A good kisser too, but everything else had been a lie— Codie didn’t even know what he was telling her was the truth when it seemed so easy for him to lie. 

A cough came down the hall that she’d been walking, eyes peeled as she peered into each classroom as if they would contain a reason as to why they’d ended up there or even a way home but instead she had a shadow that wouldn’t leave her alone but also wouldn’t tell her anything. “Is Alex even your real name?” 

It was a complicated question, one that she didn’t know if she’d even believe if he told her the truth — but needed to know. He was the only person that she had, even if he was a liar. “I need to know the truth, I think I deserve it with everything that we’ve been through,” she whispered though she knew that he could hear her regardless of how close he lingered or how far she walked away.

Never too far to be out of earshot, she remembered the warning but some of the rooms looked desolate as if no one had been in the school for years. “If you want me to trust you, then you need to be honest with me.” Another admittance on her part, because she needed it — needed to know that he wasn’t constantly telling her what he thought she wanted to hear as she pressed her lips together and pushed open a door but was stopped suddenly when he was by her side as if he’d materialized.

           “I can handle myself, you know, and I can handle whatever it is that you’re keeping from me too,” she told him with a rattle of the door handle that she’d let go of moments earlier but wasn’t noticed by her. All she could see were his eyes and wondered, not for the first time, what was going on up there. “Let me in. Just a little bit.” That was all she wanted.

Ben tried and failed to suppress a scoff. He knew, he knew none of this was Allison’s fault, but he was hurting and she was there. 

He looked down at the fresh grave, and the small tombstone there.

“You don’t accept this?” He felt his throat close up and tears well in his eyes again. She was gone. His sister, his best friend, the one person he could always count on... she was gone. He had to bury her. He knew Allison had lost a sibling, but he also knew that she didn’t have the kind of connection he and Darcy had. Very few people could. He turned on her

“What would you know about this? This is like... it’s like you losing all of your siblings and your mom and Claire all at once. She is... she was... all I had. All I ever had. I basically raised her, I protected her our entire lives, that was my job and I... I failed when it mattered most. This is on me. This is my fault.”

“Thanks,” Ben chuckled, honestly this was one of the things he missed the most about Allison. Whenever he felt upset about or was worrying over how he looked during their time as children celebrities she had always seemed to be there to insist that he looked fine even if he was covered in blood in a lot of the photos that were taken of them.

†: Did they come from a religious family/culture?

Religion for Ben is... complicated at best. 

He knows he's technically Jewish (both of his parents were though he never really knew his mother, she ran away after Darcy was born) and he has very vague memories of burning his hand on a menorah in a motel room when he was a toddler with his father, and if prompted there's something in his brain that could complete the prayers on muscle memory alone, but beyond that, nothing. Their dad wasn't around very much to teach them, and much less after he got arrested and Ben and Darcy ended up in foster care.They bounced from home to home, some were very religious and some weren't, but  90% were some form of Christian, and though he never really believed in any of it, he knows more bible verses and stories than anyone would expect (thanks to a few very strict foster parents who made them memorize verses every day before school.) Luckily, when he and Darcy were adopted by Dan and Karen Lewis, all of that stopped as they let the two of them believe what they wanted to believe. All in all, Ben isn’t religious and  doesn't believe in much beyond himself, Darcy, and what he has seen with his own eyes (which, to be fair, because of his work with SHIELD and Darcy's friendship with Thor, is significantly more than your average person.)

If you paid Ben a million dollars you wouldn’t get him to let go of his sister right now. They both needed this hug after all they had been through. “I’m so sorry about everything, I know it has been hard for you.” He had done a bit of spying ion her, though it was more just him watching her to make sure she was okay in absence of any other way to interact with her. “Claire is really great by the way, and you’re a good mom. You’re certainly better at being a parent than any of us would be at least.” He couldn’t imagine any of his other siblings as parents, they were all too fucked up or didn’t have jobs.
