Space Resources

I was going through some very old emails from the days of SEDS India and Moon Society, India. This is around 2010. There was a student at the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad (with the email id - martdeep@ismu.ac.in that keeps bouncing then and now) who wanted to become a member. We wanted to take his help to understand the data from Chandrayaan-I’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3). There is not much of an email trail but there is a mobile number.

This reminded me of ISM itself. The Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad is an interesting place which could be the center of focus soon. ISM Dhanbad has been converted into an IIT, but I hope it maintains some of its character as a mine school. This school will very soon be a very important school for space companies and India’s space programme.

The principles of extraction may or may not differ much from Earth to other celestial bodies. So far we have only picked up rocks that were already on the surface of a celestial body. We have dug some holes on some celestial objects as well, but that was mostly to collect samples.

I asked on Twitter/X if anyone at ISM, Dhanbad is working on extracting resources from celestial objects. I have not received a reply.

India Today had reported in 2021 that they had plans to start courses on asteroid mining. There is no update about the same. They do now have a center for seabed mining but no center for asteroid mining.

In Edition 81 of The Takshashila Institution’s High Tech Geopolitics newsletter, Ashwin Prasad, Space Power Analyst, talks about the consensus emerging between the United States and China about resource utilization on the Moon.

In a recent episode of SparX podcast by Mukesh Bansal, Pixxel’s Awais Ahmed speaks about how we will begin by extracting water, before moving on to other things.

Why will this be important?

The consensus emerging between US and China shows how important extraction of space resources is going to be. India is one of the few countries that now has the capability to land on the Moon. But, we also need to build the capability for extracting resources, studying mineral resources, and using those resources on the Moon and back on Earth. ISM, Dhanbad could be the place where we start to learn how to do this and build companies which do this.

Unless you've told him that you do experience panic attacks, he's done absolutely no research nor does he have any knowledge on the topic, so he won't know what to do at all to help you out, so unfortunately he might just end up doing a couple things that he most likely shouldn't do. But if you have, then he'll do some research, ask you about what he should do encase you do have a panic attack while he’s around so he’ll know the jist of what to do, and he'll keep in mind that he should ask before he acts.

Although he’d immediately want to go in and try to comfort you, he knows that the best thing to do in a situation like this is to wait and ask you what you need and how to help before acting. And no matter what you ask of him in this moment, he'll do it. Whether it's giving you space or staying here with you. Need him to bring you someplace else like someplace without people? Or maybe you want to stay here at the moment? He'll reassure you that he isn't leaving and if there's anything you need he'll do it for you.

He’ll try his best to talk to you in a slow and soothing voice, reminding you to breathe, saying that the attack won’t last long, and that although what you’re feeling may be horrible it won’t hurt you. He’d also try to suggest to you some nice calming things to think about to help ground you once the intensity of it all has faded a bit.

He does worry about whether he’s doing the right thing or not, because he remembers that from his research on the topic, he was told to be extremely mindful of what he says. He doesn’t want to accidentally say things that might hurt you or make things worse.

If the two of you happened to have some plans but were interrupted by the panic attack, he won't hold it against you if all you want to do now is go home and rest. Things like these can happen suddenly out of the blue with no way to predict them, it isn't your fault.

Max Polyakov Is Taking Over the Space Industry, Buying Dragonfly Aerospace

Max Polyakov is Unstoppable as He Buys another Space Company, Dragonfly Aerospace

Ukrainian space entrepreneur Max Polyakov is truly a man on a mission. In his latest move, he has purchased Dragonfly Aerospace, a South African firm with innovative satellite imaging technology, through his investment company Noosphere. This newest acquisition puts him on track to build his desired vertically integrated business empire.

Dragonfly Aerospace Is an Exciting Company

Dragonfly specializes in the production of satellite cameras that can produce high-quality images in a range of resolutions and spectrums. The South African firm focuses on producing cameras for microsatellites and has achieved great early success by catering to the needs of this niche market. 

The Dragonfly team has over 20 years of first-hand experience working with satellites. However, amazingly they only started developing their imaging technology in 2016. They quickly put the space industry on notice when they successfully demonstrated their cameras on the nSight-1 satellite in 2017.

Their ability to take high-quality cameras to market quickly has led the South African company to win some big clients. They have managed to sign contracts with satellite makers NanoAvionics and Loft Orbital, and Pixxel.

What Are Dragonfly’s Future Plans?

Over the short term, Dragonfly will continue producing satellite cameras and provide their imaging technology for EOSDA’s (one of Max Polyakov’s companies) first satellite. The maiden voyage is set to launch in 2022. Now that both companies are owned by Noosphere, the two of them will be working closely and are already in talks for Dragonfly cameras to be used in a 7 EOSDA satellite constellation. 

Dragonfly’s cameras will be used to help EOSDA satellites monitor the Earth to improve global agricultural practices and the overall health of the planet. The unique insights that their cameras can yield will play a role in developing the world’s food supply.

While the South African firm already manufactures impressive cameras, they have plans to produce microsatellites weighing up to 600kg. Dragonfly’s management said the goal was to start with imaging technology and then move to satellite manufacturing. 

Dragonfly has spent the last year increasing their staff from a humble 15 to well over 100. Even more impressive is their new 32,000 square feet facility located in Cape Town, South Africa. The brand new facility will give Dragonfly the ability to produce up to 48 satellites per year and work on 16 of them simultaneously.

Dragonfly also has big plans to broaden its customer base. Currently, Dragonfly is generating all of its revenue in Europe and Asia. European markets have always been responsible for most of the firm’s success, but in recent years Asian market has been growing as well. What remains elusive is access to the US market. Dragonfly’s management team believes their South African location has made it difficult to form relationships with the US. They hope that as their new owner Noosphere is Silicon Valley-based, they will help them land some big American clients.

Chapter 1

               This is amazing! It’s so beautiful! It had been months since I was able to go scuba diving. Now here I was, exploring a coral reef that had only recently been discovered. This wasn’t like normal corals reefs that sat at one-hundred and fifty feet deep, this reef needed special equipment including a specifically designed diving suit to counteract the pressure of the depth. The suit itself was patent-pending and I was the first to test it.

               I held up the underwater camera and released the breath I had taken in from my scuba tanks. Once the bubbles had cleared I snapped a quick photo. I looked at the screen and saw a small little fish had photobombed the picture I had lined up. I looked up and saw the cute little thing on the other side of my full-faced mask.

               I held out a gloved finger and smiled as the small fish gently bit at the tip. Bubbles escaped from my regulator as I laughed. You are rather adorable aren’t you? I held up the camera again to take a picture of the little one when it swam out of the shot. Awww! Hey wait!

               I followed after it and tried to take a picture again only to have it swim out of the shot again. Well you’re being rather stubborn! I thought you wanted your picture taken… I sighed and turned back towards the reef. Oh well. I took another photo of the reef and saw that the same fish has photobombed yet again.

               I looked up and saw it swimming away only to stop and turn to look at me. When I didn’t move it swam closer and nipped at my finger again. What does it want? I followed after the small fish and stopped to see if it would turn around. When it did I figured it wanted me to follow it. Well okay…

               I had never seen a fish that acted like this and my curiosity was piqued. I followed the fish to an entrance of some cave. That doesn’t look too safe. I stayed at the mouth of the cave as the small fish entered without hesitation. My eyes widened, and I was extremely impressed with the small fish’s courage.

               I continued to stay at the mouth of the cave when it came back out and I could’ve sworn it glared at me before turning tail and disappearing into the darkness once again. Clipping the camera strap to the belt of my suit, I reached for the flashlight at my hip and turned it on before inching into the darkness. If a fish that size can do it I can too right? And it’s a new place. Exploration for science! I made a fist with my free hand and shook it for more oomph towards my thoughts.

               I kept one hand on the stones of the cave as I ventured inward. This is fine. This is okay. It’s all for science. I shined the light from the flashlight ahead of me and saw something that looked like a hand reaching out from the other side of, what I assumed was a cave in.

               The small fish brushed against the hand in a loving manner than swam over to me and quickly back over to cave in. Someone…or something is trapped. It’s like no creature I’ve seen before. I followed the fish over and started to try to pull away some of smaller rocks. This could be the discovery of the century!

               I put my feet against the wall of the cave and braced body against one of the larger boulders and pushed with all my might. The boulder shifted slightly before it suddenly gave way and I quickly pulled back and hugged the wall to keep from getting hit by the rubble that followed it. Once the commotion stopped I shined my flashlight towards the direction of the cave in.

               There was now an open space and I saw a man’s likeness trying to squeeze out of the opening. His skin looked like it had some patches of scales and he looked like he had fins for ears. I gasped and dropped the flashlight, immediately reaching for the camera. I held it up only to have him take it and smash it against the stone wall beside my head. The flashlight had landed against the fallen stones and it continued to shed light on his handsome features.

               He stared down his nose at me, his white hair fluttering slightly with the water’s current. He looked angry as he raised his hand and I tightly closed my eyes. When nothing happened I gradually opened both eyes and crossed them as I focused on the small fish from before floating in front of me and facing him. He opened his mouth and looked as though he was talking to it.

               The fish swam around him and he turned his back and pointed at like they were arguing. I looked at his hair again and noticed that not only was it white but it had pink tips as well. What an unusual color. I looked down his the muscles of his back and my eyes widened when his skin turned to scales.

               Bubbles obscured my vision as let out the breath I didn’t know I had been holding when I saw a tail. Without thinking I reached out and held the tail in my hands. His back straightened and he looked over his shoulder at me before turning and slapping my hands away.

               I paid no mind to the small pain in my hands and reached up to grab one of his, intrigued by the webbing between his fingers. He jammed his other hand against my mask and I let him go and as I backed away in pain. It…it can’t be! I must be dreaming!! There’s no way there’s a merman in front of me!

               I pressed my back against the wall as he leaned in closely. He turned his head slightly and his eyebrow rose quizzically as he looked me up and down. He opened his mouth but closed it again as the cave began to tremble. I looked around frantically and felt myself being pulled further into the cave. What’s going on? My worry increased as flashlight disappeared along with the rubble left from the cave in.

               I tried to grab at any section of the wall that I could as the current began pulling me further into the darkness of the cave. I pulled my hand away from the wall as a sharp, pointed stone sliced through my palm. I tried to call out but only bubbles came from my regulator.

               I tried to swim against the current reaching out in front of me, kicking my flippers with all my might but it wasn’t enough and the darkness was swallowing me whole. I felt something grab my wrist before a stone smacked my head and I lost consciousness.

Good memories 🌟

Since leaving treatment I decided I wanted to write down somethings I’m grateful for or moments I enjoyed.

The bean bag tournament was so fun, and partnering with Jeff (who was decent). Cam and Jeremy were always the winners but Ben and Devin were good too. Val and Tom were the funniest team, Jeremy would say there should be a YouTube video called “Shit Tom Says”. Cameron thought Tom was the most hilarious person on the planet, I’d never seen him laugh at something so much before. While waiting for our next game, Valya, Ben, and I would listen to the Eminem radio on Pandora. I remember listening to shitty ‘80s rock (cuz Devin wanted it instead of rap) and then the hip hop/rap on Pandora. Karl or Shari or Brendan (whose mom bought us new bags!) would come outside and watch. We’d all put our discarded nicotine gum on that one fence post, which was gross. We also fucked up the nice new grass with our first beanbag game, lol.

Reed buying a hacky sack and playing with me and Ben was fun. He was definitely the best tech. He’d put aside anything to help me, and gave me priveledges (iPad and staying up late in the gathering place) that the other techs and nurses wouldn’t. My favorite memory of him is when he was meeting with the head nurse Tony and saw that I was leaving and said “sorry Tony, this is more important than talking to you” and helped me carry my stuff out to the car.

Staying up super late doing our nails with Elle, Sarah, and Andrea was always fun. They’d talk their girl gossip which I wasn’t involved in but it was nice to hear the drama. Sarah and I always shared the sushi which we would (sometimes steal) from the resident fridge. Sarah also recommended NF songs that I became obsessed with. On every break I’d go to the computers and listen to “The Search” by NF.

I always enjoyed sitting at the business center listening to the Beatles, Bob Dylan, NF, Mystery Skulls, Sebastian Paul, or Caravan Palace until they kicked me off at 11. Elle and Sarah would stay up with me on the computers and chat.

Open art was always a good time. We’d listen to Mozart or Lofi and do anything we want. There were so many craft supplies! I liked making things for X or drawing in my sketchbook. It was pretty popular to make beaded bracelets which we all wore.

“The Game”, my god. It started with Carter throwing around the green stress ball, and Valya thought it would be funny to throw it at unsuspecting people. Soon enough we were aiming for each other’s head. People got sick of it after a couple days, as suspected. Then, “The Game” became throwing bread at geese. Chris definitely loved it. It was 1 point for each geese, 2 for a head shot, and 3 for a baby goose. It sounds terrible now that I say it. The retention pond was such a nice spot to walk to when you were feeling bad. You could see the sun set or rise, and someone was always willing to walk with you.

FIGHT CLUB! This was amazing. Me, Jeremy, Brendan, and Jeff sat down to watch Fight Club on the TV in the men’s wing lounge. We’d have ice cream, sushi, pringles, or some of Brendan’s pistachios. About halfway through at 12am my trazodone was taking a toll and I had to sleep. I still haven’t finished it! Brendan kept asking “do you get it yet?”. I don’t think I did.

How could I forget Ridiculousness? It was on pretty much all the damn time, even in the dining room. I never really liked it but it was pretty funny because other people thought it was funny.

Gerson’s food and cheesecake- enough said.

Peer group and especially being peer leader I won’t forget. Cam was assigned jokes for 2 weeks since everyone loved his jokes so much. He always included rated R jokes and addict/alcoholic jokes. There was such a controversy when the staff wanted to separate us by gender for peer group. Ben started that petition to keep it, and the staff made a compromise. Hell, a lot of the time we felt like we were doing some sort of uprising against the staff. That was funny but sort of ridiculous.

CARD GAMES!! Probably the most unforgettable part of being at that place. Valya was the biggest cheater I’ve ever seen in my life. We’d have Uno or Uno Flip games last hours, and they got very competitive. Cards Against Humanity with everyone was hilarious. We had such a broad range of people and we all came together and agreed certain things were funny. Me, Val, and Ben had our favorite cards. Some of them were “Bitches” “Sexual Peeing” “Pixxelated Bukakke” “Eating like a goddamn family for once” “Smallpox blankets” “The black side of Barack Obama” and the one about being balls deep in a hog while shooting a rifle up to the sky. Good times. I always loved our game nights.

Karl loving my colored shoes and buying shoes like me- he had amazon packages coming every day!

There are many, many more memories that I could list but those were the happiest ones I can remember. :)
