Hearing loud shuffling and rummaging from downstairs, I take off my headphones to listen better and sigh, wondering which one of my clumsy roommates was getting into trouble. I pause my music, resting my phone and headset on my bed before I make my way out my room. I jog down the stairs, grabbing the pole of the banister to spin off the last step.

I walk into the kitchen to see (Y/n) rummaging through the cupboards. Cans and different containers of food were scattered all over the counters making me contort my face in confusion. I watch for a couple more seconds as they add cans to one of the shelves in the wide open cupboard.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm reorganizing this cluttered ass kitchen."

"Cluttered?"

"I blame you for real."

"Wha- me?!"

"Yeah cuz whenever we go food shopping, you and Okuyasu just throw whatever wherever, with no system--no home training!"

"No home training?! Hey, if it's one thing I have, it's home training!"

"You sound too confident."

"I am!"

"Then you're just a bad friend cuz I wouldn't let my friend go around thinking it was okay to put perishables in the damn cabinet!"

I tune out the rest of their rant when hearing the soft creaking of wood from somewhere. Okuyasu isn't here right now so nobody else is walking around in the house; so what the hell is that? Wait! My eyes dart to the shelf behind them as they spoke, seeing it sink slightly from the weight of the cans on it. They suck their teeth and turn back to the cabinet with another can.

"(Y/n), wait!"

They look over their shoulder as they place it on the shelf, "Hm?"

"Shining!"

My stand appears and in a half a second it caught the cans before they hit the floor or them. (Y/n) staggers backwards with a gasp while I sigh from, clutching my chest and trying to catch my breath. That was close. I take a few steps towards them to ask if they were okay but freeze realizing they were pointing at Shining Diamond while he fixed the shelf and put all cans back.

Shit. They stammered in confusion and fear making my eyes widen. Shit-shit-shit! Should I tell 'em? I can’t not, right? they were right there! It’s too late to play it off, I didn’t react like they did.

“Josuke, we gotta call someone. Yeah, I think we should call someone." Their voice trembled as they struggle to stay calm, "You know, paranormal wise. Or dip. Yeah, dipping; that sounds like the smartest thing to do right now.”

“Uh wh-what for?”

"You don’t see the cans floating? Maybe I'm tripping..."

"I-I...well--maybe it was the wind...?" Am I dumb?

They run to the living room, "Did you let me move into a haunted apartment?!”

Dammit. Now or never; and never’s not really an option. "Uh...if I tell you, you...you gotta promise you won't freak out anymore.”

“What? Josuke–!”

“And that won't tell anyone."

They back away, "You're haunted?! The ghost attached itself to you?"

"What, no! I mean, well..." I groan, pinching the bridge of my nose, "Just listen! Ah jeez, Mr. Jotaro's gonna kill me."

"Josuke, I'll kill you if you don't tell me what the hell's going on. If this is one of your pranks, I swear, Imma fuck you up."

"Okay, alright! Just promise you won’t tell anybody, I mean it. It could mean big trouble for all of us, especially you cuz you don’t have a Stand.”

“A Stand?”

“(Y/n)!”

“Okay, okay I swear! Just explain!”

I sigh deeply, "My...Stand fixed everything.”

"Who? Your what?"

"Yeah; he's like...my soul...personified...kinda so I call it a ‘who’ cuz it’s basically just me. But you could call it an ‘it’ if that makes you feel better."

"No, no; I’ll call him a ‘him’ if that means he won’t hurt me.”

“It's okay; we’re one in the same.” I chuckle nervously, “It won’t hurt you if I don’t want to, like I said it’s basically me. It’s just easier if I show you.”

 I hold up my hands in surrender and step towards them, hoping they believe me. They take a deep breath follow me back to the kitchen, even if it was just the doorway. Shining Diamond emerges from my body and picks up one of the cans from the newly fixed shelf, making (Y/n) gasp and look at me with wide eyes before slowly stepping further into the kitchen.

"This has gotta be one of your pranks."

"Sorry, you can't see him. You're not a stand user so you can't; only other users can."

They cautiously step toward him, "Can...I touch it?"

"What, the can or Shining?"

"I thought you said 'Shining'; is that what you named him?"

"Yeah, Shining Diamond; and you can’t touch him either." I scratch the back of my head, realizing how I sound, "Sorry again."

"So, you have to call him when you need him?” They laugh, “Like a Pokémon?"

"No, it was just a reflex! Cuz, you know, I didn't want you to bite the dust."

 They poke the can, gasping when I doesn't move cuz of my Stand's grip on it. They chuckle as they swipe their hands around it, looking from wires or anything suggesting I was pranking them.

"Think of it as my spirit animal that protects me. I use it to protect others. Cool, huh?"

“Yeah.” They sigh in awe, hand phasing through Shining’s, “Is that how he fixed the shelf?"

"Yep, he has the power to fix or heal stuff; animals, objects, people, anything really. Except myself, unfortunately."

"Part of me what's to see what he looks like; it's not like a biblical angel, right?"

"You really believe me? Like really, you're not being sarcastic or anything?"

"Hard not to; there's a can floating can in our kitchen."

"Fair enough. Still, I feel like I should call Mr. Jotaro so he can explain it better. Then again, it’s not like you have one...”

"Your hot friend has one too?!"

"Don't call him hot, I'm pretty sure he has a wife!"

"And he happens to be a very beautiful man with the luckiest wife in the world."

“Cause it’s true?” Josuke wasn’t fazed at all, sprawling out comfortably with an easy smirk. “Face it, Okuyasu- I’m the better player of us two. The scores don’t lie.”

“Just because your high score is bigger than mine doesn’t mean you’re better! You own the system- you can play anytime you want!” Okuyasu countered, gritting his teeth as he glared at the leaderboard blinking across the screen. “Give me 20 minutes and I’ll have that score beaten in no time!”

“More like 20 hours- if not more.” Josuke snickered, Okuyasu twisting back to face him with a gritted-teeth glare. “Too soon?”

“Take that back.” Okuyasu fumed.

“Come over here and make me.” Josuke sat up some, ready for a challenge.

A stalemate, then…

“Come here!” Okuyasu charged as Josuke pounced; their bodies colliding in a meteor of flailing limbs as they fell to the carpeted floor. “Take this, you son of a-AH! Shihihihih, nhoohohohohhooho!”

“What’s wrong? I thought you had something for me!”Josuke cooed up at him as he squeezed Okuyasu’s sides. “Come on, give it to me already! Don’t lose your nerve!”

“Yohohoohohu sohoohohon of ahahaha-EHahahahahha dohoohohhohn’t! Aheahhahahha!” Okuyasu’s own attempts to fight back were in vain as he slowly sank off his friend, giggling like a child the entire way. “Fihihiihihne, yohoohohu wihihihihin!”

“Win? So you're finally accepting reality.” Josuke grinned, sitting up so he could keep tickling his friend, watching him twist and turn in a seemingly endless giggle fit. “Am I the better player?”

“Yehehehehehhes!”

“The true champion of Gradius?”

“...mean it?”

“Nah, I just know all your tricks. You can’t go around tickling someone as much as you do without developing a pattern.” Josuke flicked his forehead with a wink before starting to stand. “I’ll get you something to drink. Anything you want?”

“Yeahhah..revenge!” Without any hesitation, Okuyasu leaped, knocking his friend onto his back and filling the room with laughter once more.

OC Rambles 1

Thinking about how after the boys meet Mary, they often like to use her house as a hangout spot because she's rich (not Rohan levels of rich, though) and will just get them the newest game or whatever if they so desire.

Koichi is super impressed with her manga collection (and even more enamored with the many special editions of Rohan's works she has) and likes the figures she collects. Mary will just wave it off like 'oh, you know, it's not that big a deal'. She just likes her collection. Koichi is always free to browse her books and borrow them whenever. He finds her more approachable than Rohan when it comes to discussing her job as a mangaka, and he is happy she likes Disneyland, too.

Josuke absolutely takes advantage of this and will spend hours hanging out at her house. If Tomoko wants him back, she's always a yell away, as he says. Even without Koichi and Okuyasu, he'll just crash at her place or enter through the window to get some peace. He finds Mary's DVD, VHS, and older vinyls awesome, and with Crazy Diamond, Mary at least can be rest assured if Josuke breaks it, he can fix it. Although he's kinda creeped out by the horror films she has.

Okuyasu, meanwhile, likes to tag along with the two when he isn't taking care of his dad. Mary will often cook extra meals for him and his father and teach him new recipes. She won't baby him (much), but Okuyasu does look up to Mary as some sort of life teacher to him. He grows more confident and assured of many things regarding himself and his future thanks to her. Food is a big part of their relationship, though, so Mary is probably cooking for the three boys or ordering nice meals for them at her house.

While they do tend to take advantage of her carefree attitude and wealth, they always like to pay it back. Okuyasu and Josuke take turns doing more manual labor around the house or fixing anything that might need repairs. Koichi is way more polite and will offer to clean up after them or even dust and reorganize the shelves.

Sadly, they always seem to have bad timing whenever it comes to Mary trying to talk to Rohan.

I feel like saying Josuke doesn't have any daddy issues whatsoever isn't entirely fair (I've seen some fic and comics go further into how he and his mom might have been treated due to the circumstances of his birth that were pretty compelling) but people who act like he grew up without any father figure are definitely off base imo. Every single adaptation and extra material have always had a focus on his close relationship with his grandpa for a reason!

see, that's precisely the thing. it is literally impossible to be a grown up human without having internalised some sort of illogical Feeling about oneself or the world – but fandom as a whole tends to just assign arbitrary ones to characters based on stereotypes rather than what they actually are like.

i do think josuke feels some sort of way about his lack of a father growing up, but that's as inevitable as joseph himself (or giorno, or jolyne, or even jonathan) having feelings about his own dad, and yet somehow jorge's absence does not get brought up despite joseph and josuke's fairly similar upbringings. the fact is that most of western fandom tends to view the JJBA characters through a (white, usa-centric) lens that simply does not lend itself to a fair or accurate reading when most of the cast is either POC or from an entirely different cultural background. that's why i'm so resistant to label josuke as having 'daddy issues'; the term means something entirely different to me than it seems to do to most of the fandom, based on all the fic, comics, and discussions i've seen (and had) about the topic. it's not exactly like the organised crime aspect of VA, but it fills me with a similar kind of frustration. i don't think one needs a degree in cultural studies or history or whatnot to enjoy a silly series about people punching each other with slutty soul-ghosts, but it's exhausting to see the same thoughtless, very specifically westernised takes being regurgitated over and over as Absolute Truth until the characters are so flanderised they seem nothing as much as a caricature of their original versions. i love transformative works as much as any other fan creator, but i also happen to like the source material. it is infinitely more interesting to me to think about what kind of relationship josuke might have to his heritage as a mixed-race person, or his identity as the son of a single mother or the obviously cherished and spoilt child of a family such as his own (especially in a place and period like canon's late-90s/early 00's japan), than to hear yet another iteration of 'haha, josuke has daddy issues' where the person saying it has no intention of analysing that premise beyond the puddle-depth obvious.

at barely sixteen years old, even as interested in high-end fashion (and as very much part of a working class family who could definitely use the nest egg) as he is, josuke's immediate reaction to being told his missing father is incredibly rich and wants to take care of him is to say that it's not necessary, and he's fine as he is. sixteen. i worked as a teacher with kids as young as a year old and people as old as mid-seventies; that kind of ease of mind is one-in-a-million and not something you'll find on someone who fits fandom's definition of 'daddy issues'. he's not angry at joseph, he's not grasping for money, he hardly even wants to find out more about the missing part of his origins. his only thought is to wish he wouldn't be the reason other people were hurt, and to protect his mother once there is a risk she might find out and be distressed about it. his entire morality system is (from what i remember of canon) mostly based around the question What Would Grandpa Do?, with some leeway allowed for the temper he clearly got from tomoko and for the fact that he is, again, a big and slightly spoilt sixteen year old.

so yeah. it might not sound fair to say he doesn't have daddy issues, but i don't think the terms fandom's operating under are fair to start with, so i'd rather recuse myself (and my interpretation of the character) from it all til we're playing the same game. the sandbox's wide and wild, and the block and mute buttons are there for a reason, so i'll just stay in my corner writing about higashikatas wielding their feelings like sledgehammers til my mum says it's time to go home.

It just means we have to get up super early though so I hope you can count on being my backup plan to wake me up if my alarm fails me or else we’ll miss out for sure. Anyway, you make me feel like a proud big brother and I’m so happy to have you in my life. Remember if anyone tries to upset you or something they’ll have to deal with me.
