The Push and Pull of Cas and Gabe (1/2)

(Okay, these guys live rent-free in my head so bear with me. Also this analysis has spoilers and headcanons, be warned.)

So pretty much everyone has been saying that Cas is being sidelined in this book and I think there's a reason for that.

Cas and Gabe are polar opposite people. Gabe is friendly, kind and warm, while Cas is snarky, mean and cold. (That's why people ship them together because opposites attract.)

At the end of Book 1, if you chose the poly route, essentially you're stringing them both along which they both are aware of and so they're competing even more.

While Gabe is competing by pulling you in closer and closer, Cas is sort of distancing themselves from you and I think there's some reasons for that:

They think MC is better off with Gabe in some way. Because if you choose the poly route in the end of Book 1, Cas says "I know you like Golden Boy/Girl but you like me too." Cas thinks that they're MC's second option.

They were hurt when the Venandis thought they were a traitor. When the Crimson Beech trio were on the run in Book 1 and they almost ran into the three of the Venandis, they overheard them saying that "Cas had been spending too much time with that human." Mind you throughout Book 1, Cas has been defending the Venandis to MC and Gabe and to hear that they thought so low and so little of him... it hurt them deeply. Cas thought that the Venandis were the only family they had and Venandis just accused them of being a traitor with no reason or evidence.

This is my headcanon here so bear with me: Cas is used to be abandoned all their life. They thought that the Venandis would have their back but they were wrong and since MC is with Gabe most of the time, they're worried that MC would abandon them next. So they distanced themselves first so that if MC does choose Gabe, it won't hurt so bad.

That's what I think is going on with Cas. The Canon story may not go into it like I did but us Fanfiction girlies can use these reasons. (And if you do decide to use this analysis for your fanfic, let me know and I'll read it 😊)

Ngl after the first two chapters I’m kinda leaning hard into appreciating and loving Gabe a ton rn. Bc when it became very clear that this book was essentially gonna be “baby vampire fish out of water” plot I was already a little apprehensive. I think it was way too soon for this mc to be turned (bloodbound had incredible pacing for this) but the writers didn’t think they’d ever be writing a book 2 so the book 1 ending was.. messy to say the least. They wrote themselves into a bit of a corner and cas and Gabe fighting over which coven mc will join isn’t that interesting either. Don’t wanna be under lewyn’s rule and the venandi’s are 😬 but I love Cas and Astoria so 🤷🏾

I do love milking the vampire guilt plot line for all it’s worth but between the two li’s Gabe is the one who understands (which I gave her so much shit for in book one bc presumably she’d been a vampire for a while and the guilt didn’t fully feel justified.)

I get that Cas is excited that mc has turned. He loves it, he loves being a vampire and he wants mc to love it too but he’s also stubborn and probably beyond frustrated that the things he hated about Gabe and now things that mc is going through. He can’t get past that right now which makes being a Cas Simp™️ So hard.

Also can I just say it is so silly/goofy to me when humanoid characters complain about humans despite looking like and being one in the past. Let mc be comfortable with their humanity. It doesn’t make them any less of a vampire, Cas, Damn 👀

Adrian turned to find that a certain vampire was no longer by his side, and neither was one of his many credit cards. Instead, Gabriela was at the other end of the aisle, her face pressed up against a glass box encasing what seemed to be a small figurine. Adrian walked over, and with a laugh, asked: "Is that from that swords show you talked about?"

many thanks to @hydn-jpg for this commission of gabriela and adrian, they did such a wonderful job on this and i adore it sm!! i love the idea of them interacting with each other like a father-daughter duo of sorts. gabe canonically watches blades and i think her favorite character would be nia (and will be adrian's too once she and lily make him sit down and watch it). adrian's credit card is a free-for-all for gabe, who has now become the world's richest vampire nepo baby in the funniest way possible (i.e. falling into a portal lmao). you bet your ass cas is looking for a way to open that portal again.

BloodBound: No matter how much we try to distance ourselves from our humanity, it still remains an inescapable part of us. Darkness lies within us all, due to our very nature, and no matter how much we try to bury it, dispose of it, it festers in our hearts, threatening to consume us. History is bound to repeat itself and humanity is prone to cruelty and self-destruction. Is love and peace truly more powerful than hatred and violence? Or are they an illusion of respite in the face of a never-ending cycle? Are we forever doomed to hurt and be hurt? Can this cycle ever be broken?

I want Immortal Desires's MC to snap.

Like Elena-Gilbert-turning-her-humanity-off snap. Because MC has spent all the last chapters trying to prove themselves to a coven that hates them, their human 'friends' are coming at them and their mother is being nosey and nasty for no reason.

I honestly want them to snap and turn feral on everybody. I would pay for that.

Cas calling mc babe, telling them they look hot, and being super touchy is 💖💖💖 like I love Gabe and how respectful and sweet she is and her scenes are always breathtakingly beautiful because they hit on such a different kind of intimacy that goes hand in hand with trust and continually making the effort to double check with each other about boundaries. ESPECIALLY with history of trauma.

But there’s definitely also something to be said about someone vocalizing how much they want you and being completely unapologetic about it in their actions and their touch when they know it’s reciprocated. He got that love confession in book one and didn’t shy away. Cas Harlow my beloved, I’ve missed you 😭💖
