Hi! I’m looking for books to add to my summer reading list. Do you have any favorite books that you would recommend?
Hello! I haven't got a book rec ask in ages! I am not sure what genres you like most but I'll try to make a list that is a bit varied so you have options!
The first two books that came to mind when I read favourites to recommend are The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (which I am currently rereading because it's that time of the year again) and The Humans by Matt Haig (which is one of the most underrated novels out there imo). You probably know about The Hobbit, if you have never read the book and are intimidated because lotr is intimidating, fear not because The Hobbit is much more approachable, and it's such a comfort book. You follow Bilbo in his adventure and I feel like it's one of the best examples of books that shut your brain off and let you escape reality for a bit. It's at the top of my list of comfort reads. As for The Humans, it's a novel I recommend every chance I have because it's so good and again super comforting. You read the story of this alien who comes down to Earth and had to disguise himself as a human without knowing anything about humans. And as he learns about humans and what it means to be human you get these amazing descriptions of daily things, and again as I mentioned it feels very comforting. It's the book I recommend for all the times in which you feel a bit lost and a bit hopeless. Lastly if you pick absolutely anything written by Neil Gaiman you are safe to have a great time. He is my favourite author and I think you can't go wrong with any of his books, and you have pretty different vibes from which you can choose!
Approaching your question from a slightly different angle, I really like to save long books for the summer. Of course studying it's the season I am less busy and I can fully immerse myself in longer novels. So if you have big books on your tbr pick one of those even if it's intimidating! I fought my personal big book fear a few summers ago and it's just getting better and better with time. If you want some big book recs I have to recommend The Priory OF The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (as well as A Day Of Fallen Night, which is its sequel, and it's probably the best book I have read so far this year). It's an amazing epic fantasy, with incredible worldbuilding, dragons and anything you can imagine. And I also think it's a great starting point if you have never read epic fantasy before, but want to try it! The big bookTM that made me win my fear was It by Staphen KIng, on which I have a lot of opinions that I won't go into right now, but it was one of the best reading experiences of my life. I basically spent two weeks fully immersed in the book, just reading and it was incredible. If instead of big books you prefer to get into a series last summer I read The Poppy War series by RF Kuang and it was a really good fantasy (tho definitely not a light read so if you consider it check trigger warnings and everything), and of course I cannot talk about series without mentioning The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir. I just reread it in the past couple of month and I had such a great time. The less you know about it the better, just strap yourself in for an amazing time and embrace the confusion it puts into your brain. To this day I have not found a book with a better narrator that the one in Gideon The Ninth, I really really recommend reading it.
Hopefully there's at least one title that you find interesting in the list! If you end up reading one of these please let me know if you had a good time! Happy reading!

notes for today,
I am truly living my best life, in a golden age of stories. I'm loving Gideon the Ninth and The Poppy War so much, and I'm almost done with both. I have about 4 hours left to listen to in both books. Derek and I just finished Midnight Mass recently, which landed solidly in the rankings of my favorite horror stories. @wind-on-the-panes and I finished playing and loved The Witch's House and Ib. We're 3 episodes into Squid Game right now, and I am REALLY REALLY into that too. Gideon the Ninth, The Poppy War, and Squid Game all have tropes and characters I enjoy very much.
Season three of You is coming out soon as well, and Derek and I loved the first two seasons of that show. :)
Work at the memory clinic was long and draining yesterday, but way more chill today as I got to work from home. I even had time to meal prep and plan a bit. I made a spicy buffalo broccoli salad, and a curry with potatoes and peas. I have the rest of my cooking for the week planned out too. :) Mac and cheese with bell peppers, mushrooms, and peas tomorrow, and Japanese-style curry later this week.
My goal to eat more vegetables this year has really worked out well. I think a big step for me was learning how to make fun salad dressings from scratch. I've made really nice Greek and Thai-inspired salad dressings, as well as lemony olive oil ones. I've been fascinated to learn that while romaine leaves, spinach, kale, etc. can make good leaf-based salads, I actually prefer broccoli and shaved Brussels sprouts when it comes to side salads to go with my lunch. They're really good with the nice homemade dressings. I also think like, "I like spicy buffalo chicken wings. Let me figure out a way to get spicy buffalo flavoring on my broccoli."
I ran 4.25 miles today - my longest in a while!! Morning exercise has been working out great for me. It helps me feel calmer through the rest of the day. It's convenient because it's getting dark much earlier too, and now I can have the evenings solely reserved for cooking instead of cooking and also exercise. It's nice and cozy :)

Mid Year Book Freakout Tag
yes this is mostly a youtube thing. but im doing it. i want to
Rules: answer the questions, tag some people, have fun! or don't. i'm not the boss of you
What's the best book you've read so far in 2022?
I haven't technically finished it, but The Lies Of Locke Lamora, 100%. It's fun, fantastical, adventurous, amazingly written, and heart-crushing :D
What's the best sequel you've read so far in 2022?
RULE OF WOLVES BY LEIGH BARDUGO
Best 2022 release you've read so far?
I've only read two 2022 releases, but probably The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School. It was a fun read that knew how to pack some punches in there, and I read it in like a day.
What's a 2022 or otherwise recent release you want to get to?
Probably Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor. I just finished the author's other book, and I'm interested what her middle grade writing is like. (I'm on a quest to figure out if I like Xiran Jay Zhao's books or not.) Plus, it sounds super fun.
What's your most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong!!!! I haven't finished her debut, These Violent Delights, yet, however I love it so far and FLF sounds like a super cool premise. (I'll have to finish the TVD series first, though, since I think FLF spoils it.)
What's the most disappointing book you've read this year?
This is Not the Jess Show. It was just... underwhelming, with a predictable plot and flat characters.
What book surprised you the most? (In a good or bad way.)
The Heartstopper volumes by Alice Oseman! I didn't expect to like them as much as I did, but they ended up being super fluffy and adorable (part of the reason I actually thought I wouldn't like them, lol). 10/10 recommend if you like romance and graphic novels.
What's the book you've read or bought/received this year with the most beautiful cover?
White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson. Like, the story inside was good and all, but the cover.... it's amazing. God tier.
What books do you hope to read before the year is over?
haha.... hahahaha..... uh
gideon the ninth, on earth we're briefly gorgeous, crime and punishment, sal & gabi number two, the locke lamora sequels, the poppy war, spy x family vol 1, a gathering of shadows, and going postal.
~
I don't actually know who would and wouldn't be interested in doing this tag, so I'm leaving it open. If you do it because you saw my post, please tag me! I'd love to hear about what other people are reading.

Hi y’all, so unfortunately after a lot of thought I decided to leave the group. A lot of changes are going on in my life and as much as I want to be here, I really need to focus on my life, friendships, long-term goals, etc. My impulsive nature of friends is acting up again, where I decided, ‘what if instead of replies, I get my ear pierced with my friend’ and just enjoying the summer for while it lasts. Unfortunately, I will never be able to rock out a tan but I can rock out a new piercing. Life has taken be my surprise so many times this year, for the worst, for the best – and after a lot of hard thinking, me leaving is definitely for the best. Hidden is still a home and hopefully I’ll be back in the future, depending on how much my life has changed.
Thank you so much for the memories y’all , the friendships, the awesome replies, the dedication. Thanks for being awesome members and awesome friends and on that note, I figured that I can leave with some good ole’ fashion book recommendations starting with my June challenge of reading strictly LGTBQ+ books for the month of June.

4, 13, 18, 24, 27 "S", 29, 37, 39, 44 for the book asks? :)
4. Is there a book that you think needs a bigger fandom??
All of my favourites XD Ok, tbf at least the ones where I got attached to the characters have small fandoms (Realm of the Elderlings, First Law, Poppy War, The Goblin Emperor, Howl's Moving Castle) contrary to books I love and have close to no content like "The Seventh Bride" by T. Kingfisher. I wish there was fanart for it, but I also wouldn't get deep into fandom talk about that book. I guess I would like Octavia E. Butler's books to have bigger fandoms, especially the Xenogenesis trilogy and Earthseed duology. I would just love to see fanart for it and memes and theory and analysis posts for those books. I understand that the books I love aren't the kind of books that call for a big fandom of artists or people that are into fandom to begin with though. A lot of people read them, but don't create anything for it or discuss it without tiring :(
13. How many books have you read this year??
Counting some manga and graphic novels, I've read 91 books so far :D
18. Do you know anyone else that likes books??
Yes. None of my irl friends love books as much I do, but two of them read around 6 books a year at least. My online friends are bigger readers and I love that I found people with similar interests through tumblr <3
24. Have you read a book that was really hyped up but you didn’t enjoy??
Ah, "The Name of the Wind" question ahah Quite a few actually. I will just leave a list with links for the reviews if I said something about it. This is according to the hype I saw online because I saw none irl for most of these. Portuguese people don't care XD
The Gunslinger (Dark Tower #1) by Stephen King (the author himself is overhyped. I had an english professor that knew it too); "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway; "The Sorrows of Young Werther" by Goethe; "The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski; "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss; "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown; "Prince of Thorns" by Mark Lawrence; "All Systems Red" by Martha Wells; "Red, White & Royal Blue" by Casey McQuinston (sorry); "Daisy Jones & The Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid; "Uprooted" by Naomi Novik; "Every Heart a Doorway" by Seanan Mcguire;
The so bad I gave up (joke): "The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories" by Angela Carter; "The Eye of the World" by Robert Jordan; "The Cruel Prince" by Holly Black; "Gideon the Ninth" by Tamsyn Muir; "Circe" by Madeline Miller; "Sorcery of Thorns" by Margaret Rogerson; "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" by Becky Chambers.
Sorry for the long list. You can see why I am tired of being fooled XD
27. Name a book that you own starting with (S). Have you read it?? Did you like it?? If you haven’t read it, are you looking forwards to it.
“Strange the Dreamer” by Laini Taylor. I haven’t read it yet and once again this is a book that was super popular on the internet so I am afraid. I’ve heard about the insta love which also doesn’t motivate me, but I the writing style seems beautiful and the main character seems to be one I would like. I am hoping to like it, but I am keeping my expectations low.
29. Have you ever bought a book because the cover was so nice??
Guilty as charged. I bought “The Jungle Book” and I am keeping it because of the cover, but I didn’t like it ;-; I mean, look at this:
Tumblr media
I hate artists...
37. Is there a book that you think everyone should read??
No. Everyone has different tastes and just like I believe that there is a book for everyone I also believe that there is no book that will please everyone. Now, a book that someone should read in order to be more open minded and empathethic might exist but I haven’t read it so I can’t recommend it. I also think that for personal improvement is better to talk to as many people as we can that have different experiences. It’s always better to learn from others than read it in a book and a lot more informative and fun too.
39. What book that has made you cry??
Most of the Realm of the Elderlings books by Robin Hobb, especially “Fool’s Fate”. Never before I cried that hard because of fiction and I am sort of a crier (or used to be before this book broke me). There are more books that made me cry, but besides that only “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” by Taylor Jenkins Reid comes to mind and I didn’t cry that much.
44. Favourite book quote, go.
I don’t have only one, but I will insert a few here:
Robin Hobb (there are so many but I’ll stick to 2 short ones):
“You seek a false comfort when you demand that I define myself for you with words. Words do not contain or define any person. An heart can, if it is willing” - Golden Fool
“I never confuse the cost of something with it’s value.” - The Mad Ship
Patricia A. McKillip (there are so many but I’ll stick to 2 short ones):
“When you open your mind and hands and heart to the knowing of a thing, there is no room in you for fear” - The Riddle-Master of Hed
“Soon is such a long word.” - The Forgotten Beasts of Eld
“Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing. There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny. And a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it's all over.” - “The Women of Brewster Place” by Gloria Naylor
“War doesn’t determine who’s right. War determines who remains.” - “The Poppy War”, R.F. Kuang
"Do you know what’s worse than a villain? A villain who thinks he’s a hero. A man like that, there’s nothing he won’t do, and he’ll always find himself an excuse." - “Last Argument of Kings”, Joe Abercrombie
“I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.” - “The Song of Achilles”, Madeline Miller
"If a man has to say trust me, Gogu conveyed, it’s a sure sign you cannot. Trust him, that is. Trust is a thing you know without words." - “Wildwood Dancing”, Juliet Marillier
I am sure that there are many more from other books and that I forgot because I am bad at writing them down. I hope to get better at it.
Thank you for the questions!

this is more of an aside to the "tell me your hated book series" question but, I'm an aspiring author, & I've been working on a couple different plot/storyline ideas to get a rough draft of what I'm gonna be writing about. I was wondering what you & your followers would like to see (more of) in lit, & what you're sick of. plots, tropes, character traits, pairings, settings, anything. I'm not looking to pander but audience perspective is invaluable.
first of all, just know you should only ever write for yourself and yourself alone. everyone is a critic, and you’ll never be able to please everyone, so all you can do is please yourself. the more important question is what you would like to see more of and what you’re sick of. your writing will be so much more authentic that way.
that being said, because i hold my opinions near and dear: i love a competition narrative -- the poppy war (at the school), a conjuring of light, the goblet of fire. and i’ve talked about this a lot, but i loathe historical fiction that’s framed by a modern storyline; if i never see another book like that it’ll be too soon.
i hate love triangles. i hate it when secrets are withheld too long from the main character or the reader for no reason, and especially when characters not communicating -- either because they won’t or can’t -- is a plot device.
idk if you write fantasy, but more diversity there is badly needed. it’s getting there (the traitor baru cormorant and gideon the ninth are great examples). but my biggest desires are more complicated female roles and villains. i’m tired of the princess / tomboy dichotomy (cough cough looking at lila bard). in kushiel’s dart, phèdre is a courtesan -- and a spy, a diplomat, an adventurer, but a courtesan first. so that’s cool. and melisande is honestly one of the best villains i’ve ever read, and her relationship to phèdre is truly incredible.
but as i said, i’m one person on the internet, and i’m sure everyone who reads this will have different opinions of what they hate or want to see more of. for example i like slow, character-driven stories, and lots of people like more action-based ones. i listed my opinions only because it’s fun to talk about, but they really shouldn’t have any bearing on what you write.
stories are unique to the people who write them and they always should be, and i’m sure yours will be wonderful xx

@thelightofthingshopedfor tagged me in a Tag X People You’d Like To Get To Know Better meme!!
Three ships: Ooh, hmm. First is of course Shakarian, always, forever, light of my life, I cry every time. I don’t know anything about actual Magic: The Gathering lore but I’d be into more exploration of a mostly platonic Gideon/Liliana but that’s so very self-indulgent because I’m the world’s biggest Gideon Jura fan bar none. Annnnd Griddlehark from the Locked Tomb books has absolutely made my life better please read these lesbian space necromancer books they’re so GOOD
Favorite colors: Purple! In fact, the exact purple that’s on the asexual pride flag. In fact, my favorite color scheme is just the asexual pride colors. It really worked out well for me lmao. Also a big fan of crimson and a nice rosy pink.
Last song I listened to: “As Many Candles As Possible” by the Mountain Goats
Favorite musicians: the aforementioned Mountain Goats, Foxy Shazam, My Chemical Romance, I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME, Orville Peck, Poppy and my local faves Bit Brigade, Kwazymoto and Shehehe
Last movie I watched: I think it was the 2013 The Great Gatsby? Or maybe it was Color Out Of Space, I can’t remember. I had Inside Llewyn Davis on in the background recently but I wasn’t really watching it.
Currently reading: Harrow The Ninth PLEASE read these books they’re so GOOD
Favorite Character: Just one? FUCK probably Courier Six but if you don’t wanna count a player character I really like Dream and Death of the Endless.
Last TV show/currently watching: My Hero Academia don’t come for me
Currently consuming: Stone Brewing Co. Stone IPA
Sweet, spicy, or savory? All of the above?? It just depends on my mood honestly but I love spicy food. My favorite foods are all like...buffalo wings, red beans and rice, gumbo, barbecue, anything that can have a range of spiciness. My dad’s recipe for barbecue sauce is the best, it’s got enough of a kick to be good n’ hot but not so much that it’s painful.
Sparkling water, tea, or coffee? Coffee. Tea is fine if I’m sick but sparkling water is a war crime.
Pets: I have a black cat whose legal name is Cinder but who everyone calls THE V O I D. She’s the best and I’d die for her. My roommates also have an orange tabby cat named Aisling and a dog named Dixie. I’d love to get another cat but the roomies are planning on getting another dog and we don’t have space for five animals.
