day 30: buford

arguably the best pet owner ever

Remember the time that Buford had an emotional breakdown because his pet fish Biff (who was his only friend at the time, and the only person he cared about who cared about him back) got lost at sea?

And the other time when Phineas said that they were going to sew a quilt, to which Buford whined about. Isabella said something along the lines of "You don't have to hang out with us every day, Buford." Buford then starts panicking and insisting he has to hang out with them, and basically states he'll go crazy if he doesn't?

Also, there's the fact that his father either isn't around much/isn't in his life at all.

We all know that Buford's a big softie once you get past the angry walls he's set up to "protect himself" from the world.

Is it just me, or does Burford have abandonment issues?

rewatching pnf season 1 & 2 and here are some of the neurodivergent highlights!

“obsession rocks!!!” said at a moment when candace and stacy were gleefully bonding over their love of the bettys. the joy of new hyperfixation!!!!

“fossils! dun dun dun…” my man lawrence vocal and audio stimming let’s go!

perry crashes in, heinz doesn’t react, perry goes over to heinz and pokes him in the nose, revealing heinz is an inflatable decoy. perry immediately pokes the inflatable nose several more times! autism is stored in the platypus

jeremy tells candace he’ll call her soon, so cancace goes into waiting mode the next morning and tries to find the exact meaning of “soon.”

candace (scared of heights) on a ferris wheel. jeremy asks her what’s wrong and candace wordlessly indicates the drop. she contonues not to speak after jeremy comforts her. loss of speech!

phineas usually displays empathy, but when buford loses biff, phineas shows annoyance and doesn’t seem to empathize. nevertheless, he helps buford both with emotional support and by working to solve the problem. this is because i’m projecting fluctuating empathy onto him and also because empathy ≠ kindness.

baljeet owns a lot of books on a seemingly uninteresting topic (shoelaces). conclusion- he fixated on the topic in the past and got all the information he could find at once!

one of dr. d’s schemes is entirely because he considers the noise outside his building to be too loud and he can’t concentrate. he gets off-topic in conversation and apologizes, blaming his lack of focus on the noise. it’s harder to act neurotypical when you’re sensory overloaded, ok?

at one point heinz tells perry that there’s a tin cup inside his cage for him to play with, specifically because of the sound it makes. perry proceeds to move this tin cup around for a while.

vanessa sensory overloaded by the sound of heinz building vs heinz making incoherent sounds while he builds (vocal stimming!). in a different episode vanessa uses earbuds to deal with her dad making noise.

honorable mention: stacy and candace reading all of sherlock holmes in one night / dressing as the characters the next day

for the pnf revival the episode i’m manifesting is a modern fish and reptile care standards one where buford comes over with biff and says hey i think this 2008 cartoon goldfish bowl is getting too small for biff can you guys help me make him something bigger and phineas and ferb say yeah sure! and spend the episode making this huge elaborate multilayered terrarium with fourteen different substrate layers and decorations placed to optimise feng shui and temperature control accurate to a thousandth of a millionth of a degree and all that. it’s big as hell and takes up the whole backyard so obviously candace says mom holy fuck but doof has been working on a just-barely-adequate-inator that replaces any item with the bare minimum for it to fulfil its intended function, likely to replace a gift roger is getting for their parents to make him look like he doesn’t want to put in extra effort, which in the usual fight with perry goes off and hits the giant elaborate fish theme park and replaces the whole thing with just a nice little aquarium with some colourful gravel and plastic plants and a good strong filter. so linda gets home and says aww did you boys help buford decorate his new fish tank that’s so awesome of you. candace maybe you should help next time i bet you’d have more fun that way. there you are perry, signature guitar riff and cut to black, roll credits dan and swampy should hire me

one of my genuine hopes for the pnf reboot is that if biff is at all featured he gets an actual, real tank (or better, a pond).. fishbowls aren't suitable for any fish by a longshot but goldfish are MASSIVE fish as far as ones kept as pets go- common goldfish like biff likely is grow to over a foot long, and even among fish their size they produce a RIDICULOUS amount of waste and as such need incredibly heavy-duty filtration systems. goldfish tend to be much better pond fish than they do tank fish.

especially because buford adores biff so much, of course he'd want to give him the biggest, best home!

and yes, i know, it's a goldfish in a cartoon. but i think it's really important to show proper care for fish and other pets in shows, especially those aimed at children. lots of goldfish, bettas, and other common pet fish live short, miserable lives in tiny, unsuitable homes, and i think tv shows and other popular media depicting proper habitats can go a long way in making more suitable homes the norm, you know?

I love the idea of Buford being a nerd for Greek/Roman mythology+ history . I guess it makes sense since Greek and Roman history + mythology is very big man history with an emphasis on war hero’s, emperors, etc which would be RIGHT up his alley. But I still think it’s an interesting side of his character

Like he knew the (albeit fake) story of the Gordian Knot, he was super willing to participate in the Trojan War reenactment, even taking a leadership roll, and he was super knowledgeable about the clothing worn by his character.

we already know buford tends to gravitate towards nerdy things so he can be “a kid in a candy store” (Nerds of a Feather) with the amount of nerds around him, but the Trojan War reenactment and the implied book club that preceded it seemed to be just the friends.

I can imagine Baljeet maybe getting him to read the Odyssey or the Illiad and he secretly loves it but he is NOT letting Baljeet know but as he gets more comfortable around his friends, he lets his interests come to light in small ways…

I wonder which ancient historian he likes best? I think he’d be a fan of Plutarch’s parallel lives, because it focuses on the big guys, and their lives and journeys

He’s so cute, he is taking this so seriously. Also the sentiment of “here’s your shield, come back with it or on it” was very of that era, but providing a kit for your army… well

Circumstances would probably be a bit different for Buford, then :0 He probably wouldn’t be as mean (at least in the beginning of the series) bc he has a younger brother to set an example for, and Biff really looks up to him...! Ofc he still does tease Baljeet and Phineas pretty often but it’s usually p playful, and they’re used to it lol

An agent in training tho—if he’s younger than Buford?? He’d be too young to be an agent omg (and I don’t mean this ironically LMAO)...maybe he helped Perry out once and the agency was like, “In ten years, we’ll give him our card and call him in” so maybe they’re just considering him for now!
