Making Weight
For many high school pole vaulters, especially those who are just starting out, one of the biggest challenges they face is making weight for a track meet. Here's the deal – in order to use a pole, it has to be rated equal to or greater than your body weight. But here's where it gets tricky.
See, if you're not the fastest athlete out there, it can be really tough to move up to heavier poles. And without the right pole, well, let's just say your vault might not go as planned.
So, what's a vaulter to do? Well, one option is to work on your speed and strength to make it easier to handle those heavier poles. That might mean hitting the gym or doing some extra sprints at practice.
Another thing you can do is talk to your coach about your concerns. They might have some tips or drills to help you improve your speed and agility, which can make a big difference when it comes to moving up to those heavier poles.
And hey, remember that everyone starts somewhere. Making weight for a track meet might seem tough right now, but with hard work and dedication, you'll get there. So, keep pushing yourself and don't get discouraged. You've got this!

Part II, Day 63
Tumblr media
Track meets, squishy fields, and embracing your inner generalist.
A bracing wind out of the north, a temp of 44°F, my biggest winter jacket, and the cold of the aluminum bleachers on our butts. Today was my daughter‘s first track meet of the season.
It’s her second year on the track team. Last year, anyone who wanted to join could be on the team, and as a result, there were…too many people on the team. This year they had tryouts for a week; the best athletes made the team. She was excited when she made the cut. And of course, her event is one of the most dangerous: pole vaulting.
The field part of the track and field was too wet from the 12 inches of wet snow we endured last week. The coaches made the call to use only the track for this meet. The field folks couldn’t practice their specialty. The pole vaulters weren’t able to vault.
Instead of having them sit on the sidelines, the coach had them run a race that was well outside of what they’ve trained to do. A 100-meter sprint!
I like the idea of flexibility being a generalist with a specialization. In track and design. She’s been training with the rest of the track team, lifting weights, doing sprinting exercises, doing all of the drills. Becoming a generalist with a specialization.
I’ve said before that I’m a designer first; along with that comes a wide range of design tasks, duties, and responsibilities. There’s some that I like to do and some that I am good at. Sometimes both! There are some that come naturally, and there are some that I’ll do when needed. Also, sometimes both!
As I recall the job description of roles past, and I think back on what was in those job descriptions versus the work that I did day-to-day. Some duties get listed, and others DO NOT. And that’s okay! It should be expected, within reason.
Sometimes it’s these tasks on the fringes, the ones that fall outside of the job description that help you build a greater understanding of an organization. They can help you relate better to a role that might be adjacent to yours—you might find yourself in a working relationship or situation that you wouldn’t have otherwise.
My daughter sort of joked about the pole vaulters running in a sprint at a legit track meet. It’s one of the more coveted spots on the track team. People have to try out to sprint on the track team. That is, unless the field is too squishy and in that case it’s all fair game. I think it worked out well for them, today.
There’s going to be times in the working world where the field is a little bit squishy, and we get to do things we didn’t intend on doing. We might be good at them, we might not. We might find out that it’s actually something we love.
Here’s to more squishy fields!

Hi! I'm new to the show and it's a lot to catch up on. What are your favorite episodes from each season?
Regretfully, I must inform you my list of favorites is about five miles long—particularly for the first three seasons. So this might still be a touch overwhelming.
But I’ve been asked this once or twice, so I guess now’s as good a time as any to compile all the requests into one post.
To satisfy the various different asks for watchlists, this post will include both episodes I think are important to the plot/characters, and episodes that I consider my favorites. Feel free to skip any: this is completely arbitrary.
Color Key:
Essential episode titles will be colored blue. If I also consider them one of my favorite episodes, they will have a purple * next to them.
My favorite episode titles will be colored purple.

Haikyuu But They Don’t Play Volleyball (Pretty Setter Squad)
Notes: I am once again telling you that I know nothing about sports.
*Read that Captain version here! (oikawa was included in the captain thread)*
Sugawara Koushi: Diving
He’s beauty. He’s grace. How could he not be a diver?
I’m sorry but just imagine him coming up from a dive, his hair clinging to his forehead, just smiling that pretty smile of his as he swims back to the edge of the pool?
Catch me simping.
TEAMMOMTEAMMOMTEAMMOM!
Sugawara is brings a whole ass cooler of snacks and drinks to every meet for all of his teammates.
Probably leads in stretches?  His positive energy gets everyone super hyped for the competition.  I promise you’ve never heard anyone count to ten with more enthusiasm.
He’s there on the sidelines to watch every single dive during the meet, shouting words of encouragement as they approach the platform, and then cheering loudly after the completed dive.
But, also?  C H A O T I C at practices.  Like he knows when it’s time to actually practice, but if something has the team down?  He’ll do some stupid move, shouting some TikTok reference on his way down.
Sugawara is really good at twisting dives? Like?? Really good at them.
If you come to his meets to watch him?  Precious bean smiles so much, likely giving you a thumbs up and a toothy grin before he steps up to the edge of the springboard.
You’ll try to give him a hug once he’s out of the water, but he’ll likely just laugh and object, saying that he’ll get your clothes all wet.
But, he will sit down in his chair and let you dry his hair with his towel.  Watch him melt into your touch once you're done and just running your fingers through his silver strands, getting any tangles out.
He always offers you his jacket, because he’s an absolute gentleman.  But, he inevitably ends up getting cold, and will cuddle you in his lap to steal your body heat, putting his towel down over his legs so you don’t get your pants all wet.
Kageyama Tobio: Basketball
He plays point guard, because much like the setter in volleyball, the point guard controls the team’s offense.  It’s the most specialized position, again, just like the setter.
Three point K I N G!
Drains them left and right with expert precision.
He plays so rough oml and it’s not even on purpose!  Someone could guard him too much and he’s pissed even though that’s literally the point of basketball??? Catch him throwing so many elbows.
Kageyama practices dribbling non-stop.  If he’s not in during practice, he’s on the side lines doing ball-handling drills.
He could be the best ball-handler on the team and he’s still working to improve himself and learn from some of the point guards from the opposing teams.
He will have no idea that you’re even at his games, because he’s so in the zone, but if you come up to him afterwards as he walks out of the locker room?
Insert soft Tobio smile here ;-;
He’ll ask you if you enjoyed the game, probably talking about how one of the other players had a really clean jump shot, asking you to rebound for him so he can try that.
Please tell him no.  He’s on an adrenaline high and needs to go get some rest.
Kageyama will probably con you into it, no matter how much you object. He’d be shooting baskets, asking for your input every now and then as if you have any idea what you’re meant to be looking for.
You definitely walked up to him after a game in a t-shirt that had his name on it and this boy just got so flustered, because he will never be over the fact that you, of all people, wanted to date him.
But, he would tell you that you looked nice, just like he always does.  Kageyama would never outright say it, but the fact that you get all dressed up for his games makes his heart do backflips 🥺
Kozume Kenma: Track
Right? Crazy, I know, but hear me out.  He does high jump or maybe pole vault.  Something that doesn’t require too much physical exertion.
Sitting outside in the sun at track meets for hours on end is by no means his favorite thing to do, but he’s one of the first events, so if the meet is at Nekoma, he can just dip for a little while and go play his games at a cafe that has air conditioning or something.  Don’t tell his coach though because they’re technically not meant to leave??
During practices, you will likely find him lying on the mats, playing a game on his phone, not even caring if his coach comes over.  The others are doing the same thing, so why does it matter?
He can get really meticulous though, especially right before postseason.  He’d get in this trance where he’s constantly working on his approaches, making sure they feel just right before he even thinks about jumping.
Kenma hates when you come watch him.  It throws him off, so if you do plan on coming to a meet, please don’t say anything ;-;
Honestly, he probably wouldn’t even tell you when he has meets, just so he doesn’t run the risk of you watching him.
Assuming you do find out his schedule, it’s probably best if you come after his events?  It would put him more at ease knowing that there wasn’t even the slightest possibility that you had watched him.
He’ll sit on the bleachers with you though, munching on some snacks that you brought, making quiet conversation while he plays his games.
Kenma will always tell you that he doesn’t care if you come or not, but deep down, he enjoys the time he gets to spend with you while he’s waiting for results he absolutely will make sure that you leave if he makes it to the final round though
Akaashi Keiji: Golf
GOLF BRAT this is a joke don’t kill me pls
I’m talking like he grew up playing golf with his dad, but because he’s played so long, he’s super good.
He shoots in the high-30s on nine holes and probably gets really annoyed with himself if he gets in the mid-40s
You’ll see him on the driving range right after the match, practicing until he’s content if he ever does worse than he expected.
He only uses Callaway golf balls and probably has a really unique ball mark.
His golf clubs?  Custom fit.  He’s not a snob, I swear.  He just takes it really seriously, because Akaashi knows that he’s good and could get some really incredible scholarships.  He wants to be able to perform to the best of his ability and if that means spending a lot on a nice set of golf clubs that will last him for a long time, then he’ll do it.
Akaashi carries his clubs.  He doesn’t understand the need for those push carts?  Sure the clubs are kind of heavy, but it’s not that bad.
Definitely refused to wear a glove for a long time, but eventually the blisters and calluses got so bad that he had to cave.
Putting KING.  Can and will sink a 15’ putt without batting an eyelash.  He doesn’t have a lot of power in his drives, but his short game is impeccable.
He’s always really flattered when you show up to his matches.  They’re boring to watch, and he knows that, especially if you don’t play golf or have any interest in the sport.
But, the fact that you’re willing to walk with him around the course, asking him questions about the rules of the game, or even just helping him find his ball?  It brings that gentle Akaashi smile to his face.
Akaashi in a polo akaashi in a polo akaashi in a motherfucking polo
Some weekends he’ll take you out to the course with him, let you borrow a set of his old clubs if you don’t have a set of your own, and you two will play a round of golf together
You give up after hitting the ball in the lake four times in row and just settle for driving the golf cart and providing him with emotional support.
Atsumu Miya: Tennis
Just imagine that wide ass smile of his when he scores a point
Wait i’m already soft i-
Anyway.  The intention was to get Osamu to play too and they would be this really incredible duo for doubles
But Osamu physically could not put up with Atsumu’s shit.  Like, in volleyball there are other people on the court to interact with, but in doubles tennis? It’s just atsumu
Osamu literally lasted one practice.
But, we’re not here to talk about him.
Atsumu doesn’t have a lot of power, so he has to come up with other ways to score.  He mainly relies on well-aimed receives or drop shots
He hates the uniforms and he looks terrible in them.  I’m so sorry Atsumu stans, but it’s just a fact.  Those really light, almost white, khakis and the maroon polo?  Boy looks so dumb and he knows it.  Add the dumbass headband his coach makes him wear to keep his hair from his eyes?  Fashion crises.
It’s for this reason that he really doesn’t want you at his matches.  Because he knows that you’re going to take stupid pictures of him and use them as blackmail.  You come anyway and yes.  You take a million pictures of your boyfriend looking like a hot mess in his uniform.
If he catches you taking pictures in between sets?  He’s going to steal your phone the minute he’s done so he can delete them all
“153 pictures?! What the hell, Princess. . .”
“Sorry, ‘mu.  You just look so dumb in your uniform.”
He likes to drag you out to the courts on weekends to play doubles with friends or he’ll ask you to play singles with him. He always says that he’ll go easy on you, but three volleys in and he’s slipped into the zone and he’s playing for real.
Atsumu has absolutely smacked your ass with his racket and feigned innocence when you whirl around to stare at him in shock.  He probably starts lecturing the nearest person on how they should treat someone like that, especially his princess.
Smack his arm and shut him up, please.
I promise he looks a lot better when the two of you go play than when he actually has a match.  Some nice athletic shorts and a black t-shirt or hoodie, maybe a baseball cap to keep his hair out of his face?  Yeah.  He looks hella cute.

______________________________
Something was definitely wrong in Ba Sing Se, and just being in the city gave Ty Lee the creepie crawlies several times an hour. After a week of putting up with it, she was at risk of going all Azula once she found the cause. Aang's meditation sessions were probably the only thing keeping her out of an uncontrolled avatar state at this point.
Ty Lee didn't always look or sound the most attentive to details, something that had served her well in the past, but she didn't need anyone to point out when there was something rotten right beneath her nose. Much of what she took in from around her stayed in her head, swirling around with everything else until she was able to make the connections she needed. She wasn't always the fastest of the Ty septuplets at picking apart the tangles of political intrigues, but she was more often right than any of her sisters (she was right more often than her friends, too, but she'd been careful not to point that out). She was also consistently the fastest Ty in sparring, though that may have come from being the avatar, so it felt like a cheat.
She'd come to the Earth Kingdom capital with her unlikely companions for a number of reasons, all quite pressing. Their top priority had been to share intelligence with the Earth king and his generals as part of Sokka's rather brilliant plan to take down the firelord. They'd gotten a meeting scheduled with King Kuei, and flaming monkey tigers, the Fire Nation had nothing on the Earth Kingdom's bureaucracy!  If that weren't enough of a reason to come, they desperately needed time to recover from weeks of things going terribly, horribly wrong. That couldn't happen if they were being chased around the world by her Royal Fire Academy best friends (and the sister she'd left in her place with the circus to avoid raising suspicion when she went off to pursue her destiny). Not even General Iroh had been able to penetrate the ringed city's great wall, and while Azula was brilliant, she wasn't yet up to his standard. Her attempt involving a massive drill had failed, and the princess retreated, so they were safe from that quarter… for now. Their final reason for being in the vast city was to find Appa, her chronologically 112 year old airbending master's sky bison and one of the companions who had been with her since early in this convoluted adventure.
With two of their three goals addressed, or at least pending, they'd all split up to search for any signs of the ten-ton creature (who really shouldn't be this hard to find, even in Ba Sing Se). While out and about they were also gathering information on the general oddness of the city. Joo Dee's messed up orange aura and creepy smile sent a message that they'd all picked up on. Their extremely anxious neighbors, who quietly advised them to not ask questions and most of all to avoid the Dai Li, had flaming red auras. Living in the central ring of the city among the very wealthiest and most influential, they had no reason to show such fear. Well, unless King Kuei's court was as literally cut-throat as Firelord Ozai's but less open about it.
As she skipped down the clean and tidy streets of the inner ring, she noted that while the architecture was different from home, it was no less opulent than the capital she was most familiar with. She idly wondered if they used earthbending to suffocate out any undesirable plant growth, the way fire was used back home. Everything here was so orderly, or as Aang put it, inhibited to the point of joylessness. Even Toph, who was intimately familiar with Earth Kingdom upper class manners found it creepy.
She turned a corner and heard cheerful chatter unlike any she'd encountered during their stay. The Ba Sing Se social elite were quiet and dull, or perhaps they were deathly terrified to lose face and power from whatever was wrong here. Hearing people sounding like they did in every other part of the world was definitely something to investigate. Across the plaza and up a short flight of stairs was a tea shop. It's exterior had clearly been freshly painted, gleaming green and gold under the late morning sun. A cup of tea would make her day's work more pleasant. Pursuing her destiny had sounded a lot more fun before she'd spent weeks on end chasing one lead after another, without the time to really enjoy the places they stopped. They barely had time to bathe for most of the trip.
With a bit of a hop, she was able to vault over the railing, bypassing the stairs entirely. It was not entirely proper decorum, but she was dressed in a way that marked her as an outsider. She and Toph had spent hours comparing social rules and drilling them into Katara's head (the Water Tribe girl was quick to both mock the foolishness of the conventions and to demonstrate she could fit in with even the most elite social climbers). Ty Lee had a surprising number of things in common with her earthbending master, and her bluntness was no worse than Mai's, so they'd fallen into an easy alliance. Katara was something else all together. Despite their countless differences, she'd become a better friend than any Ty Lee had ever had. It was a given that she was a lot nicer than Azula, but she'd never met someone so focused on doing the right thing regardless of the risks, with no other motivation.
Ty Lee skipped up to the open doors and peeked in. This was unlike the other tea shops she'd visited in the city. The waiters were constantly in motion, delivering cups and pots of steaming tea to the many full tables of happy visitors. There was energy and enthusiasm here, not the fog of apathy. The dining room held the gentle fragrances of teas that were familiar and some that she was sure she'd never had. This would definitely clear her mind enough to start connecting all the weirdness of the city. While her friends were good at coming up with plans (spirits knew that they would have died in the desert if not for Katara, and Sokka's use of Wan Shi Tong's knowledge was flat-out brilliant), she felt that she really needed to be pulling her weight. She was the avatar, after all. It was bad enough that they had decided early on to let Aang masquerade as the avatar to take the pressure off her. If she wasn't at least coming up with some of the plans (beyond the completely random trips to spiritual centers), what good was she?
"Hello." A cheerful young man's voice called her out of her own head. "Welcome to the Jasmine Dragon. Our special for the day is Ba Sing Quon, a soothing tea for the refined palate."
She looked up into a very familiar face. "Zuko?" she squeaked. There was no way he could be anyone else. Even if he had a double here in the earth kingdom, there was no concealing the scar his father left on his face, and as one part of a seven-piece matched set, she was never fooled by look-alikes.
He sucked in a breath, his face going pale as he took a step back.
Her hand darted out and caught the long brown sleeve of his uniform before he could flee. "What are you doing here?" she whispered, keenly aware of the other staff and patrons around them. When she'd last seen him, Aang had knocked him out in the North Pole shortly before she and La had merged to obliterate the Fire Nation navy. Aang had run afoul of him a time or two since then, but she'd managed to stay out of his sight.
She could see in his eyes that he was weighing his options. Zuko had always been smarter than Azula wanted to believe. "What are you doing here?" he countered. "I thought you were hunting down the avatar with my sister." His remaining eyebrow arched.
"I'm on vacation," she said airily. "And what about you?  Aren't you supposed to be on your own hunt?"
"Only if I want to return to court," he said with a sneer. "Which I don't."
She stared at him in awe. That was not something she'd ever expected to hear out of Azula's serious older brother. Frankly, his temperament was better suited to leading the country than her hot-headed school friend.
"I'm making my own destiny, and I'm done chasing ghosts for him," Zuko said firmly.
She offered him a small smile. "I'm happy for you. You deserve your own happiness."
He looked surprised.
"He was always a monster to you, and it wasn't fair," she said. She'd seen favoritism spoil the relationship she and her sisters could have had, and that had been nothing compared to what happened in the firelord's children.
Zuko shrugged. "Like father, like daughter."
Being chased all over the Earth Kingdom by Azula had given her a whole new perspective on her once best friend. "You're not wrong."
His eyes narrowed suspiciously.
She leaned back in her chair. "I know. I'm supposed to say she's an acquired taste and that she's not that bad, but… if I've learned anything the last several weeks, it's that Azula's been turned into a dangerous weapon that your father will turn on whoever he feels like." It had been frankly terrifying to have that weapon turned on her.
Zuko stepped back. "I'll be back with your tea."
She watched as he walked stiffly to the back of the shop, disappearing behind a curtain. He looked so much better than he had in the north. He actually looked happy. Moments later he returned with a small tray holding a single red-glazed white teacup.
"Your tea, miss." He placed it gently on the table in front of her.
"Thank you, Zuko."
"Lee," he said.
"What?"
"My name is Lee. This my uncle Mushi's tea shop." He took a slow breath. "We close at dusk."
She flashed him a cheery smile. "Very good to know. Thank you."
Ty Lee sat on the raised edge of the fountain in front of the Jasmine Dragon tea house, watching the sky turn a spectacular peach color. It had taken some pretty heavy assurances before her friends had been willing to let her go off and meet her Fire Nation contact solo. To be fair, they were all a little on edge. Even without Ba Sing Se's creepy aura (who knew a city could have its own aura?) they'd been hunted, chased, and attacked a little too often (especially recently) to just do as they pleased.  She'd refused to share information on her contact, but agreed that they should come look for her if she wasn't back in an hour.
Paying close attention to the vibrations in the thin soles of her dance shoes, she looked up to see Zuko and General Iroh step out of the tea house, working together to close and lock the grand doors. She stood up and waited for them to approach. Zuko moved a little stiffly, but his uncle was as steady as always. He was difficult to read, but his white-streaked violet aura was reassuring. He'd shed the heavy mourning he'd still carried when she'd last seen him, well before she realized she was the avatar. They weren't here with Ozai's blessing or knowledge, then.
"Ty Lee," Iroh said quietly. "You are not someone I ever expected to encounter here in our new home."
She beamed at him. "Then it's a pleasant surprise for all of us," she declared.
Iroh stared at her for a silent moment. "I certainly hope that's the case. My nephew and I have settled in nicely, and I feel we've really found our place." He paused for another moment. "It would be a shame to have to uproot ourselves yet again."
She held out her hands to both of them. "As I told Lee," she smirked at Zuko, "it's nice to see you so happy. I obviously don't know what you've been through on your travels, but it seems to have smoothed out the difficulties life brought on you both."
"How are you even here?" Zuko asked, blunt but without the heat she might have expected. "Last I heard, you'd joined up with Azula to terrorize the avatar."
Ty Lee clapped her hands together. "Yeah, so I've heard."
"She doesn't let people leave her service," Zuko noted. "So I have to assume you're here on a mission for her."
She laughed a little and shook her head. "That situation is not at all what it seems to be."
A small but totally gleeful smile appeared on Iroh's face. "So her companion is one who shares your likeness?"
She rolled her eyes. "You'd think my best friend would be able to tell me and my sisters apart." She gestured to Zuko. "Lee knew it was me immediately." To give Ty Lao credit, she'd fooled everyone, including Mai and Azula, who should have seen through the masquerade.
"That still doesn't answer how and why you're here, though," Zuko pointed out.
"You aren't the only one seeking a different path," she said quietly.
Iroh's large callused hand wrapped around one of hers, and when she looked up, she could see understanding in his eyes. "I believe it is safe to say that none of us are a threat to the other."
Ty Lee nodded. "We're only here until we can meet with King Kuei, and I haven't even told my friends who I'm meeting with tonight."
"So you aren't alone, then?" Iroh asked. "That's good. Safer."
"Who are you traveling with?" Zuko asked, clearly more suspicious than his uncle. He'd never liked unknown variables.
"No one you know, silly," she replied easily. "It's just a small group of friends from all over the world."
"It's been wonderful to see you, my dear," Iroh said. "And I would love to stay and chat, but I've been on my feet all day. Why don't you and Lee catch up." He turned to Zuko and raised his eyebrows in question. "And do be sure to stop back in before you leave Ba Sing Se."
Zuko's shoulders drooped a bit and he nodded.
"How long have you two been here?" she asked once Iroh was gone.
"We're new to working in the upper ring," he explained. "But we've been in Ba Sing Se for several weeks now."
"We've only been here about a week," she said. The silence was uncomfortable. "So, I bet you know of some of the nice sights that we haven't found yet."
Zuko nodded. "Yeah. Why don't I show you the Firelight Fountain. It's in the lower ring, but it's actually really nice." He glanced around. "Less stuffy than the places in the upper ring."
"Sounds great," she agreed, following as he led the way to the nearby monorail station. "How did you come to Ba Sing Se, anyway?" When his face closed off again, she clarified. "I don't need every step of your journey. Just… how did Lee and Mushi end up here?"
He visibly relaxed and nodded. "Uncle knows people all over the world, and he got us new identities. It was easy to join the groups of refugees traveling here." He was silent for a moment. "I didn't really want to come here. I still thought honor was something my father could actually give or take away. But I wasn't in a position to argue with Uncle."
"The Dragon of the West is a formidable opponent," she agreed.
Zuko snorted. "I've come to understand that."
Ty Lee laughed, delighted to see him making something of a joke.
"Whatever we may think of the Earth Kingdom, they manage the people of Ba Sing Se well. They had apartments available and there's a communal kitchen for newcomers who don't have work placement yet." He shook his head, looking a little awed. "It's a far cry from what happens to refugees in… well, you know."
She did know. In the Fire Nation, being in a poor situation was seen as the culmination of poor choices, and aid wasn't freely given to people who had called misfortune on themselves. Her journey had helped her reframe all of that. No one person caused an earthquake or mudslide. Some people made all the right choices and still ended up poor.
"We still live in the lower ring, in one of the refugee apartments, but we're on a waiting list to move to the middle ring," Zuko continued. "I'm not really in a rush to move, because we don't need much. And I don't care about the status." He looked out the window, blind to the blur of the city passing beneath them. "But it would be good to make the apartment available to someone else. There's so many refugees coming into the city right now."
"I really mean it," Ty Lee said, leaning over to look out the windows as the carriage came to a stop. "I'm glad you're finding your own happiness."
He looked at her for a moment. "Thanks." He got up and gestured that this was their station. "And what about you? Are you finding your happiness?"
It was a fair question. She hadn't been exactly unhappy, not since joining the circus. "Purpose," she decided. "I enjoyed entertaining people, but it wasn't enough." Especially after her extra bending potential spontaneously manifested one evening, and she knew she was meant for more.
"And you needed to travel the world to find it?" he asked.
"Not really. Not to find it," she replied. "It's more that the traveling gets me to where I need to be, to… uh, engage in my purpose." That was vague enough, right?
"What is this purpose that can't be done back… home." That last word came out sounding distasteful. The Fire Nation probably hadn't felt like home since even before he was banished.
"Helping others," she declared. "It's more than I could do with the circus, and definitely not something I could do with Az… your sister." It would probably be best to avoid the name that was known the world over. She'd seen the Dai Li lurking on rooftops during the day. While most people didn't tend to look up, she was an acrobat and preferred to go up when she needed an escape. The buildings were taller here, and maybe lower ring inhabitants were less worthy of close monitoring, but she couldn't risk it. "She would've frowned on it, because I'm not just helping people she would have seen worthy."
Zuko nodded. "She's pretty selective in who she sees worthy of helping, and there's usually a reason behind who she chooses to help, something not remotely altruistic."
Ty Lee nodded. It was something she'd never liked about Azula, even before she'd learned more about herself. "She only watches out for herself and isn't really interested in real balance." It had been why she hadn't gone to her friend for help when she discovered she was the avatar. She knew Azula would cast their friendship aside as easily as she discarded an out-of-season gown, if it would curry favor with her father.
"Balance?" Zuko let out a huff. "You sound like Uncle." A rare smile found its way onto his face. "And that's not something I ever thought I'd say about you."
"I suppose." She laughed a little. "I'm both surprised and unsurprised that he supports balance."
He gave her a look that clearly begged her to explain further.
"The stories I've heard about his military days are very different from the man he is now." She shrugged. "I guess we can all change."
Zuko nodded. "He taught me to redirect lightning," he said in a low whisper.
She stared at him in surprise. "You can do that?!" She hadn't even heard it was possible.
"It's critical in facing off against my sister, or my father, for that matter."
He wasn't wrong. But how had she not found anything on that technique in all the many firebending scrolls she'd covertly read?  Not even the Fire Sages' library contained that information. Spirits, she needed to learn that. But how could she do that? How could she get that information without telling Zuko more than he needed to know?
"Hey Lee!"
Ty Lee looked up to see a  girl their age waving at Zuko from across the street. She wore her hair in paired braids and was dressed in Earth Kingdom green.
"Who's your friend?" Ty Lee asked, delighted by the blush she saw in his cheeks.
"Hello, Jin," he called back, waving awkwardly. It was enough encouragement for the girl to scurry over to them.
It might break Mai's heart if she knew what Zuko was up to in Ba Sing Se, but what she didn't know wouldn't hurt her. And Ty Lee wasn't in any position to tell her, not that she was inclined to.
"How have things been at the new tea shop?" the girl asked. "We've all been so excited to hear about it."
"It's going really well," Zuko said. It really was nice to see him happy as he chatted with the girl who clearly had a crush on him. "It's been better than even Uncle hoped for."
"That's wonderful!" The girl exclaimed. She turned to Ty Lee. "Hi, I'm Jin."
"Oh," Zuko looked a little nervous. "Jin, this is my, uh, cousin."
Ty Lee grinned. "I've known Lee practically all my life."
Jin's eyes and mouth went round with surprise. "Were you in the circus with him?"
That was his cover story? Ty Lee almost burst out laughing. This was too easy, and would give her something to tease him about for years. "I was in the circus."
"Were you in the juggling act with him?" Jin pressed, looking all the more eager.
Ty Lee shook her head. "No. I'm an acrobat." She demonstrated by bending backward to stand on one hand for a moment.
Jin clapped enthusiastically. "Oh wonderful." She glanced at Zuko for a moment before leaning in to whisper, "He's out of practice, so maybe don't ask him to show off his skills."
"Thank you for the warning," Ty Lee whispered back. She winked at him before speaking regularly again. "Lee is taking me to see the Firelight Fountain."
Jin clasped her hands together over her chest. "Oh, I'm just coming from there. You won't be disappointed." She turned back to Zuko. "It's all lit up tonight."
"Do you, uh… want to join us?" Zuko asked reluctantly.
"I'd love to," Jin said with a sigh. "But I should get back, and I'm sure you and your cousin need to catch up without strangers around."
"Thank you, Jin," Ty Lee said, bowing gratefully to the other girl. "We do have an awful lot to catch up on, and you know how families can be." She tilted her head and rolled her eyes. "Petty infighting and back-stabbing."
Jin laughed. "I'll see you another time, Lee. I'd love to hear more about the Jade Dragon."
"Jasmine Dragon," he corrected. "Like the tea."
"Oops. Yeah, Jasmine." Jin waved and continued back up the road the direction they'd come from.
"She seemed cheerful," Ty Lee said.
Zuko nodded, awkward again. "She's friendly. Happy."
"She likes you," she pointed out sincerely. There was no need for teasing just now.
He looked both pleased and a little embarrassed. "I know."
"I'm glad some of the people here are seeing who you really are." That certainly hadn't happened at home, not after his mother vanished.
He glanced at her in alarm. "She doesn't know… who I am."
She waved off his concern. "I'm not talking about where you came from or what you can do." She wiggled her fingers at him. "I mean who you are as a person."
"Oh." He nodded slowly. "You really sound like Uncle." He looked closely at her. "You're not the person you used to be. Not at all."
They stepped into a circle that could only be the Firelight Fountain. "It's lovely." The simple feature beautifully displayed three of the four elements at their best. A warm glow shone from the ring of lanterns, reflecting in the stone fountain's sparkling water.  All that was missing was air, and Ty Lee could see small rings on the lanterns that had probably once held streamers to dance in the breeze. The designed balance was as askew as their world, and it broke her heart a little. She'd need to keep Aang away from this place. He didn't need reminders that he was the last of his kind.
"Hey," Zuko said softly. "Are you all right?"
Ty Lee sniffled a little and quickly rubbed at her eyes as she nodded. "Yeah."
"I didn't think you were the type to cry over a pretty fountain," he said.
"It's not just that." She sighed, trying to figure out how much she could tell him and how she could bring up lightning again. "It's… it's a painfully accurate representation of the world," she finally said. "It wants so badly to be balanced. But it isn't."
"Hmmm." He looked closely at the fountain again. "Did you know that the avatar is still alive?" he asked, his gaze intentionally turned toward the water. "He's traveling the world on a flying bison."
"Oh… yeah." She nodded. That bit wasn't exactly a secret. "I'd heard that. I'm pretty sure that's who your sister is chasing after."
"I saw a flyer the other day," Zuko continued. "I guess his bison is missing."
"How… unfortunate." She'd forgotten how good he was at intrigues, just because he didn't care for them. Had she let slip too much? While it was known in the upper ring that the avatar was there, she didn't want her friends to have to dodge Zuko or Iroh. Her firebending had come a long way, but she was no match for either of them. It was just another reminder of how ill prepared she was for taking down Ozai.
"Do you suppose he's found a firebending master yet?" Zuko asked, glancing at her before looking away again. "I imagine that's been a tough element for him."
"He's the avatar," she pointed out. "Shouldn't he already know how to bend all the elements?" They'd encountered that mindset more than a few times, and as the person trying to meet everyone's needs, it was incredibly frustrating.
"I don't think that's how it works." Zuko shook his head. There was a long moment of silence. "I met him once… well, more than once." He looked embarrassed again, as if he were cringing away from his past actions.
"Really?" Aang had shared all his encounters with the angry banished prince, and the boy always seemed disappointed about something.
Zuko sighed. "I wish I could meet him again, now." He met Ty Lee's eyes. "I owe him an apology."
"Really?" How did he keep surprising her like this?
Zuko nodded. "He offered me friendship and I threw fire at him. I hurt him and his friends when I was still desperate to complete my father's errand. It was wrong, and I see that now."
"You just wanted to come home," she said, internally forgiving him for the things he'd done as a result of the abuse he'd endured.
"Yeah, and I've come to realize that a place where you're expected to do things that you simply can not abide because they are morally wrong no matter how you look at it, that's not home," he declared.
"Has Ba Sing Se become your home, then?"
"It's closer," he admitted. "But not quite my home. Not yet." He moved to settle on the edge of the fountain.
"You might just need a bit more time," she suggested.
"Maybe," he agreed. "But I can't shake the feeling that there's something else I should be doing. Something more I could do to help restore the world's balance."
"Oh?" She wasn't sure how to bend that back to what she needed from him. "So what else could you be doing?"
"Teaching the avatar how to firebend," he said, his voice soft and matter of fact. "Like I said earlier, I think that being able to redirect lightning is going to be crucial." He chewed on his lip for a moment. "I've been going out at night looking for signs of his bison, Appa, I think is its name. And while I'm not fully sure I've found it, I might have a decent lead."
Her heart leapt in her chest and her throat felt tight. Appa was a creature of very few words and much wisdom. "Why… why would you do that? Look for Appa?"
"Because it's the right thing to do," Zuko said earnestly. "I've done the wrong thing so often, I have a lot to make up for. And I think it's going to take something monumental to get his friends to let me talk to him and offer my skills."
"Oh." She couldn't think of anything to say to that. How could she bring this up with her friends? Would they be willing to give him a chance?
"Because of the missing bison flyer, I know the avatar is in the city," Zuko went on. "Do you think it's wrong to hope that he might show up in the Jasmine Dragon one day?"
Her breath caught, and it was a struggle not to show it. "No." She coughed to clear her throat. "Stranger things have happened."
Zuko nodded. "You should get back to your friends before they start to worry." He stood up.
"Yeah." She did not want them coming looking for her.
"It was nice to see you, Ty Lee," he said, offering her a small smile. "Nicer than I would have expected."
"I'm glad I bumped into you," she said.
"Be sure to stop by the tea house again," he suggested. "Before you and your friends leave the city."
She smiled, feeling content for the first time in a while. "I will." She had a lead on both a firebending master and Appa's location. Perhaps those two details would be enough to get her friends to take a chance on adding a new member to the group. Maybe things were finally moving past the point of hopelessness, and she actually stood a chance at becoming a good avatar.
"I'll see you soon, Lee. I promise." She turned and walked up the street toward the monorail.
_____________________
This was fun to write, but also a challenge.  I have never written from Ty Lee's perspective before, and I'm not sure I really nailed her character, but I'm hoping it's close enough.

When you get big into drag racing, there's a few new things you have to worry about. The average Joe trying to drive his stock Camaro around doesn't have to worry about the bellhousing exploding and spinning the remnants of the torque converter through his ankles. Nor does he have to particularly care about it catching on fire. Or keeping the driveshaft from erupting and pole vaulting his car into orbit. There's probably dozens more of this type of safety concern that you're just not aware of until you start making your car go faster than a private jet.
Part of this is because you trust the manufacturer. Or at least you trust the government that trusted the manufacturer to tell them the car is "pretty safe, I swear." Another nice feature of buying cars that are a little behind the technology curve (read: 20 years old) like me is that you get to discover any major safety concerns about a vehicle only after it's killed like three dozen Midwesterners on their way between bingo and the liquor store. All of that goes out the window when you take a rusty fifty-year-old taxi cab and cut chunks out of the body in order to jam the wrong engine into it with the intent of going in a straight line really fast.
There's two schools of thought on this issue in the racing community: one, that you should try to be as safe as humanly possible because tech doesn't catch everything, and two, fuck tech and the horse they rode in on. You'll note that in both philosophies, the individual who is driving the car is ultimately responsible for his or her own safety. And that seems appropriate, because they're the ones who will get their clavicles ruptured when the holes they drilled into the firewall for weight reduction let a stray bolt or piston into the cabin.
You would think that being exposed to this kind of safety-conscious mindset would make me build a safer car on the road. However, it's done just the opposite. Without the brutal stresses of a drag launch on slicks, there's no real reason for me to even make sure all of the lug nuts on my Volare are even present. And since I never resurface my flywheels, there's no reason to imagine the constantly-chattering eBay clutch could ever grab hard enough to explode a bellhousing. You have to know what the rules are in order to break them.

Two Division Champions and FIVE athletes advance to Masters
Notably, advancing to the finals in the girls’ pole vault required a height of 11-6, a rarity in CIF-SS history. Such a qualification height had been achieved only once before, in 2018. Contributing to this achievement were five girls from the Southwestern League, including Aspen Fears, the defending champion from Vista Murrieta. Seniors Negro, Hansen, Rodriguez, Pepito, and junior Fears all…

A new mask - part 1
Inspired by this prompt.
Miraculous Ladybug.
There are so many moments that divide our life. So many choices, so many decisions, so many seconds and so many memories. Some are much bigger than others.
Most people assume mine would be when I first pulled the mask over my eyes; maybe when I first started swinging. They would be wrong. The main moments that split my life? That divided it into before and after? They were words. Three words in fact. A screamed 'NO', marking the end of the first chapter. A small smile and an 'okay' beginning the next. And a whispered ‘Adrien’ ending one chapter and beginning the next, wrapped up in a single word.
-
Marinette slid her books into her bag, and zipped it up. Around her, her classmates did the same, and a dull wave of chatter filled the classroom, including the voice of Alya.
“And the video I posted of Ladybug using her latest suit is still nowhere as popular as the one where she hits Chat Noir with a fly swat, but I think it’ll get there.”
Marinette nodded, and swung her bag onto her shoulder. “Well, your camera has improved since then,” She gestured at the fancy phone Alya had gripped in her hands, “But there was something about their faces in the flyswat video. I don’t know if you’ll ever beat it.”
Alya laughed. “I get that… But one day I will. Just watch me!”
Marinette nodded, but very quickly looked away. “Bye Adrien!” She called, as the blond haired boy hurried out of the classroom door. He jumped, and turned around. Sheepishly, he waved at his friend, then continued out the door.
Alya rolled her eyes. “Come on, it’s so obvious you’ve got a crush on him.”
Marinette snorted. “Come on, we’re just friends.”
“Mm hm.” Alya looked pointedly at her bestie.
“Oh come on!” Marinette rolled her eyes. They’d had this argument many times before, and the outcome was always the same. No point in going through it yet again. “We only have a page to read for homework. Thank goodness, because as of next week we are officially in exam week.” They started walking out of the school.
Alya groaned. “Today is the last day before a weekend of study…”
“Then a week of study.”
“Then a week of study!” Alya agreed, as she waved her arms into the air. “Honestly, why do they have to make the work so hard!”
“Hmm…” Marinette pretended to consider the question. “Maybe it’s because we go to a super fancy, super expensive unless you get a scholarship, technology school for students ahead of their time?”
Alya chuckled, which faded into a groan. “But if there’s anything our classwork has taught me, it’s that I am not smart. Like, at all!”
Marinette was about to point out how Alya was a lot smarter than she let herself take credit for. Alya had made most of the adjustments on her phone’s camera herself despite several warnings from the school that pulling apart the ridiculously expensive phone would end the warranty on it early. It paid off though, and now she had a camera that never seemed to take a blurry photo, no matter how quickly her and Chat Noir moved when they fought each other.
“Marinette! Look!” Alya grabbed her best friend's arm, and pointed to where a black figure could be seen leaping over a building. “I have got to film this! I might have to miss a bunch of battles during exam week, I’ve gotta get some now!”
“Then go!” Marinette urged. Sure enough, her friend took off, running in the same direction the black character jumped.
The fact that Alya always hurried off to film the hero-villains of Paris had the benefit of halving the number of excuses Marinette needed to create. As it was, she simply ducked behind the stairs of her school, and pulled out her suit from her school bag.
It was easy to shimmy out of her loose-fitting dress. She’d taken to wearing bicycle shorts and a black singlet under all her clothes pretty quickly after adopting her superhero name, so she didn’t feel too awkward- she was out of view of everyone anyway, but there was something reassuring about still wearing clothes even if they were way more showy than anything she’d normally wear. The suit slipped on easily. It was made out of this lightweight, white fabric she’d then dyed red and black. It had been hard work, but the slight spiral pattern each black dot had gave the suit a flair of being unique. Finally, she dug out the mask.
Though her suit changed fairly regularly, each time she got a new idea for some technology or design, once she decided on a mask it stayed the same. It covered the top of her head and face but not her nose, mouth, or the bottom of her cheeks. At the back was a simple strip of black elastic to hold it in place but let her hair stick out. At first she’d kept her hair stuck down her suit, but it began to itch, causing the change in design.
She pulled the yoyo off her waist, and used it to throw herself into the air, high above all of the buildings, and as soon as she could she released her hands to change her pigtails into a short braid. She’d gotten pretty good at braiding when she realised how tangled her hair could get when she was, well (a smile reached her face as this thought reached her) being a superhero.
-
When Chat Noir was first spotted, it had been the start of a school year. He was doing what soon became his regular shtick- robbing (or failing to rob) a ridiculous place. First, it was the Louvre. Go big or go home, probably, or definitely because that’s what he’d told her when she’d brought it up. He’d actually been stopped by the police that time, leaving him to run away in his ridiculous suit. It had made the news, Alya’s video of him running away from their batons. Anyway, he’d been so much of a comic book villain that she thought it would be a bit of fun, you know, to design a comic book hero. It was only meant to be the suit that she’d design, but when she been messing around with her yoyo in the school’s workshop two days later she’d found that if she replaced its string with this new, stretchy, squishy material, then she could probably use it to throw herself over a building.
And, well, the moment that thought occurred to her, she had to try it.
The answer was yes, which was exciting.
At first she was only swinging through Paris like Spiderman in a Ladybug-themed suit for the workout. No, stop laughing, she was serious- gym memberships were expensive and the city was like a giant gym! Sure, she was considered ‘trespassing’, so she needed to wear a mask, but it was worth it.
Then when Chat Noir reappeared, a week after his last appearance, he had a baton all of his own. He actually spent 20 minutes showing this to the police officers- not fighting them, just showing how it extends, and how he can balance on top of it. Marinette turned up right as he did that, leaving them awkwardly staring at each other, one from on top of a silver stick and one dangling from her yoyo from a building.
“So, uh,” Chat Noir said. “Are you a superhero here to stop me, or do you also want to rob the Louvre?”
And Marinette obviously couldn’t say she was going to rob the Louvre, so the next thing she knew her and Chat Noir were fighting.
She had no training fighting, at all, but Chat Noir had forgotten how to shrink his baton so she held her own until he gave up and hurried away. Marinette actually felt pretty proud of herself, so she watched him go, grinning slightly. That was until one of the police officers walked up to her and asked for her name.
“I, uh-” She stumbled over her words, until finally she landed on “Ladybug.”.
Not the most dramatic origin story (I wore a mask because I was trespassing, and I beat the bad guy because his weapon broke), but soon she and Chat Noir began having their ‘fights’ regularly. Marinette was pretty sure she’d become quite good at fighting, as well, because now their fights were actually fights! To be honest, she actually looked forward to them, because it was a work-out, which her parents had drilled into her head was very important for mental health, and because the jokes between her and Chat were fun. She enjoyed herself. To be honest, she didn’t see what all the fuss was about in the comics- Chat Noir rarely tried to pick a fight during school hours, it was easy to keep a secret identity from Alya because her friend always ran off first, and it was fun swinging above buildings.
-
“Chat Noir!” She called, when she reached what turned out to be a bank. The villain was wearing a clunky black suit, which had advanced since his first appearance just like hers had.
“Ladybug!” He responded, and stood up from where he was sitting on top of the bank’s roof. “Are you going to try to stop me?”
“Of course!” Ladybug walked dramatically towards him, the wind blowing in her hair.
“Well then,” Chat Noir smoothly used his baton to meet her on the ground. “I guess that means we have to fight.”
Ladybug started swinging her yoyo in a circle, then they ran at each other. Chat Noir extended his baton towards her head, so she spun on her toe, then threw the yoyo at Chat’s foot. When it caught it, she pulled and sent him to the ground, but he rolled with it and pulled her over too. They lay on the ground for a moment, then Chat muttered, “That must have looked so cool.” Ladybug grinned.
“Not as cool as this.”
She leaped to her feet without using her arms, then threw her yoyo at Chat’s arm. He yanked his arm out of the way, pulled himself to his feet, and ran at her again, this time pole vaulting over the red hero. In the air, he used his baton like a sword, and swung it at her. She dodged it, and ran up to Chat. She pulled her arm back to throw a punch, when a loud explosion made both characters freeze. Very slowly, she turned to face the bank behind her.
The front doors had been blown open, and smoke billowed out. From the smoke, a figure dressed in a dark purple and silver metal suit emerged. It looked very dramatic, and as Marinette focused that, the figure started running. It wasn’t very fast, probably because of the four, large, brown sacks thrown over its shoulders.
Suddenly, Marinette jerked to life, and she threw her yoyo at the figure. It struck one of his bags, which slipped from his grasp. When it hit the ground, money rolled out of it like water. The figure, which definitely looked more masculine so Marinette decided to start calling it a him, glanced at it, then at the hero. Marinette pulled her yoyo back, then threw it forward again. He took a step to the side, didn’t even bother spinning to avoid it, just stepped to the side and the yoyo landed on the concrete. Marinette swallowed.
A loud roar hit her ears, and the figure started lifting off the ground. It must have something in the feet of its suit, because he quickly took to the air, and disappeared from sight.
There was a pause, in which both Marinette and Chat were silent, then she rounded on the black cat next to her.
“You have a sidekick now!” She roared.
Chat Noir’s eyes were wide. He swallowed. “I- no- I don’t know who that was!”
“Right.” Ladybug snorted.
“No, seriously, I have no idea who that was.” Chat Noir argued. “Look-” He glanced to the side. Alya had appeared, and was steadily creeping forward, wielding her camera which suddenly seemed less exciting now that it was picturing the hero standing next to the villain, money spilt on the ground, looking at where the clearly bad guy had got away. “We should go. I promise, I had nothing to do with that, Ladybug.”
And the cat was off, disappearing into the day like he always does; only tripping once or twice.

hellooooooo, my dudes !! i’m oliver and this is noah. i swear his majors make sense just read the intro...
Tumblr media
「 gregg sulkin. male. he/him. 」 i hope that #lexsquad member 「 NOAH ARCHER 」 adds me to the squad ! the 「 TWENTY-ONE 」 year old 「 FINE ART & ANATOMY 」 major has been apart of the squad since 「 OCTOBER 2019 」 and seems to be the 「 WALLFLOWER 」 of the group. 「 NOAH 」 is a 「 JUNIOR 」 and seems to enjoy 「 SKETCHING 」 but you can always find them at a squad party , too ! 「 oliver. they/them. 21. est. 」 -- kie's wc !
ABOUT
– born in a suburb of nyc to a pretty normal middle class family. one brother two years older than him and his parents. he had your typical childhood, just your typical bumps that come with puberty and growing up.
– he grew up sketching a lot bc he spent a lot of time following his parents around and doing a lot of waiting and reading was too boring... and frankly… was not that good at it. but he kept at it and it developed into a pretty Big Talent !! he started gravitating toward people eventually, finding it challenging and full-filling. soon it was more strange to find noah without a sketchbook than with one.
– didn’t really know what he wanted to do as he neared the end of high school tbh. art was the only thing he was good at --- that and pole vaulting lol. actually he went to lex bc they offered him an athletic scholarship. so he went to lex for that, decided to major in fine arts while he was there ; luckily had supper supportive parents that let him LOL ( the scholarship probs helped a little in that regard ). learned a lot about painting, acrylic and oil, though sketching and drawing remained his first love. he took to the bustling street, sitting in cafes and sketching anyone and everyone ( in a non-creepy way, he promises ).
– middle of his sophomore year, his friend met this super hot guy at a bar but never got his name or anything. and well… that’s where the story really starts. noah figured hey, why not give it a try and that was his first time sketching from a description. and it turned out pretty spot on.
– from there, things spiraled out of control. parent of a friend of a friend heard some things and next thing he knew, he was shadowing a forensic artist at the nypd the next summer and adding a second major in anatomy. so yeah, that was a twist he didn’t see life throwing at him. but he’s surprisingly happy with the new direction, thinks it can really take him somewhere maybe. who knows.
USELESS FACTS
– he still has a sketchbook with him like… always. carries this worn leather messenger bag to hold it and all the pencils and charcoal he’ll ever need in addition to his backpack bc u gotta protect the real goods. definitely still in the habit of sitting in cafe and drawing random people. it keeps his skills sharp. sometimes has friends drill exercises with him where they describe a random person in like a stock photo to him. he thinks it’s fun…
– he paints too !! but those are like,,,, rarely ever finished unless they’re for class. he runs out of motivation too fast. his apt probs like half-finished canvases of every size just… everywhere. like i said, classwork and freelance is one thing — but all his independent projects lmao ???? like never finished. ever. king.
– uh. yeah sports. he does track n field ( pole vault is like his Thing ). rest of the year he just keeps himself in shape. running, gym, the works.
– has a little freelance business !! mostly just short sketching commissions bc what college student has money to spend on that lmao. business probably picks up around christmas and valentines day tbh.
– near photographic memory tbh… helps with all those anatomy classes tho.
– kie’s secret ex. probably still sad abt it. probably has a full sketchbook filled with him too. still the person he can draw easiest from memory. what can i say.
– his older brother plays in the nhl. that’s not really relevant at all but i’m including it anyway. he probs plays for the ducks so he’s close-ish. noah goes to his games occasionally.
PERSONALITY
noah’s just like.... pretty unassuming ? he does tend to stick more to himself than get into the thick of things, hence his label. he’s got an artist’s eye though : acutely observant, not much slips past him, probably could be a detective... lowkey his parents think he should’ve used that intellect for something that wasn’t art lbr. doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to have fun, just tends to hang back first. prefers to be in full control of his faculties so getting him drunk is a rarity. absolutely the friend that would dd. he tries his best to be kind and to let people make their own impressions on him. but like ? double-edged sword too ? he also doesn’t really care if you’re popular or whatever. he’s also a good listener and has been told he’s a reassuring presence ??? people tend to want to talk to him and find him giving off those like Trustworthy vibes, y’know ???

Ladybug and Reine Nuit: Chapter 2
Origins II
Disclaimer: I don’t own ML.
If you don’t take the chance to spruce up Ladybug’s outfit, then what are you doing with your life?
Part 1 | Part 3 | AO3 link
For a moment, Alya is frozen, unable to do so much as breathe. The little cat yawns and stretches, then blinks, revealing brilliant green cat eyes.
“Uh –” Alya clears her throat and tries again. “Uh – what – guh?”
“Better than my last holder’s reaction,” the tiny cat drawls in a scratchy voice, then darts over to Alya’s computer. “Ooh, shiny! Can you eat this? No, you can’t,” he gags when he tries to bite a corner off the monitor.
“Um, hello!” Alya says in a high-pitched voice. “Less eating, more talking! What are you?”
This is all just a dream. It has to be. What other explanation is there for a talking cat appearing in her room?
“My name’s Plagg. I’m a kwami,” the little cat says. “I grant powers. Yours is the power of destruction. Got it?”
“Wait…” Something click’s in Alya’s brain and she shrieks and bounces on the spot. “You – powers – am I a superhero now?”
“Uh huh,” Plagg says. Alya squeals and snatches up the silver ring to slide it onto her right middle finger. “And no one can know I exist, you should have a partner to help out, yadda yadda, you know the drill. Seriously, you got anything to eat? I’m starving.”
“Omgomgomg yayayayayayay!” Alya throws herself into her blue beanbag chair, kicking and flailing. “I’m a superhero now! I get to go out and fight crime and save people and be badass and – and – wait.” She freezes and points out the window in the general direction of the giant stone monster. “Does that mean I have to fight that thing?”
“Uh huh,” Plagg says.
“How do I transform? Is there a magic word? Do I like – I dunno – do a dance or something?”
“You just gotta say claws out. Now, first thing you gotta know is –”
“Plagg, claws out!”
“Wait, I haven’t finished explainiiiiiing –!”
The ring on Alya’s finger pulses as Plagg is sucked into it, and she’s enveloped by bright green magic, cold and forceful and powerful. Although she’s not entirely sure why, she runs her fingers across her eyes from the bridge of her nose, then brushes a hand over her hair, then holds her other arm up in the air and does a twirl until the green sparkles fade away.
“Oh. My. God.” Looking down at herself, all Alya can see is shiny black leather. She rushes for her mirror, tripping over herself in her haste, and she lets out a high-pitched squeal of excitement when she catches sight of her reflection – her superhero reflection!
Her hazel eyes are now cat-like and bright green, with the whites of her eyes a paler green colour. Her features are concealed behind a black mask with two points above her eyes and one down her nose, like a cat nose and miniscule ears, and with a thin outline of neon green. She has fake black and green cat ears on her head, while her brown hair is pulled back into a bushy ponytail tied with a green ribbon, and she’s wearing a tight black suit with a high split neck and green trim, elbow-length bright green gloves, and thigh-high black boots with green around the tops. She’s also got a thin black belt around her waist that hangs behind her like a cat’s tail and a bright green cat’s paw on her chest, along with neon green cat paw pads on her black palms and fingers. A quick look at one of her boot soles confirms that her feet have the inverse: green soles and black paw pads.
No. Way. What. The. Heck. She looks just like a comic book superhero!
“This is the greatest day ever!” Alya grabs the baton resting at the small of her back and rushes over to her glass door to burst out on her balcony. She climbs onto the railing, takes a deep breath, then leaps.
“Wahooooo!” Alya shrieks before realising that she’s about two seconds from splatting on the road below. Acting purely on instinct, she shakes her baton to extend it into a staff and holds it above her head so that it catches on a street lamp, then grabs the other end with her other hand. The lamp acts as a hook, leaving her dangling, her vision blurring from the jarring force in her arms that should have dislocated her arms but strangely didn’t.
“Okay,” Alya groans, letting herself drop to the ground. “Lesson one: don’t go jumping off balconies two seconds after getting superpowers.”
She eyes up a nearby building, then looks at her staff, and then gives a rather shark-like grin. Using her staff as a vaulting pole and with the aid of what she can only assume are enhanced physical abilities, she manages to leap from the road to the roof of the building, letting out a hysterical laugh as the wind whooshes in her ears but the locks of hair hanging around her face magically stay put and don’t fall in her eyes.
“What else can this thing do?” she says. She frowns at a building across the street in the next block over, then throws her staff like a javelin and whistles when it nestles neatly against the other building, laid between that one and the one she’s on like a tightrope. “Should I? I mean…I can’t die if I fall, can I?”
There’s no response from Plagg. With a sigh, Alya gingerly places one foot on the staff, then the other, then thrusts her arms out on either side and ever so carefully inches across. Don’t look down, don’t look down…
“Hey, I think I’m getting it!” Alya says. Almost as if in response, there’s a shrill scream that steadily grows louder and louder, and Alya looks up just in time to catch sight of a red figure hurtling through the air before crashing into her. Thankfully, the figure has some sort of string-rope-thing that catches their fall and leaves them dangling in mid-air from Alya’s staff, bound front-to-front, although Alya’s currently too busy trying to coax her stomach out of her throat to really pay attention to what it is.
When they finally stop swinging from side to side and Alya manages to regain a few of her brain cells, she realises that it’s a yo-yo. And the wielder of the yo-yo is a girl who looks absolutely terrified.
“Uh…hi!” Alya grins. “Your first day too?”
“How could you tell?” the other girl says with a faint laugh, finally managing to untangle them. Alya nimbly lands on her feet, but the other girl is a lot clumsier and nearly crashes on her face. “Sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose!”
“No sweat, girl,” Alya says. “At least you didn’t nearly rip your arms out of your sockets.” She finally gets a good look at the other girl, who’s wearing a tight suit that’s red with black spots over her chest and upper arms, with a black abdomen, ladybug-patterned legs, and black elbow-length gloves and knee-length boots. Her jet-black hair is red-tipped and in pigtails, tied with red ribbons, and the eyes behind her ladybug-patterned mask are a brilliant shade of blue.
“Ouch,” the girl winces. “That sounds painful.”
“Oh, you bet.” Alya nudges the girl. “Anyway, you must be the partner my kwami told me about! I’m…hmm, okay, hold up. I gotta think of the perfect name!”
“I take it you’re a fan of superheroes?” the girl says.
“Am I ever! How about…Chatte Noire! Nah, too simple. I’m literally just calling myself ‘black cat’ in French.”
“Well, I’m Ma – er – Mar – uh…” The girl pulls her yo-yo free of Alya’s staff. Alya winces and groans when the end of it slams her on the head, but it also brings her staff down with it, so she bends down to grab it. “Madly clumsy! I’m so clumsy. And sorry. So sorry.”
“All good, clumsy girl,” Alya says. “I don’t have any more of an idea what I’m doing. Hmm…Patte d’Ébène? Ugh, no, that so doesn’t sound heroic. That sounds like some fancy rich meal.”
The ground beneath them suddenly rumbles, causing Alya to nearly trip over her own feet despite her enhanced reflexes. A tall building crumbles to the ground nearby, and Alya immediately starts running in that direction, using her staff to propel her to a nearby rooftop.
“Hey! Where are you going?” ladybug girl cries.
“Uh, to save Paris, right?” Alya calls back, then takes off again. “Dame Lune? Eh, that doesn’t feel right. Ugh, how does Majestia even do this?”
.
The stone monster turns out to be at the stadium, cornering one of Alya’s new classmates – Kim, judging by the monster’s cries.
“Hey!” Alya nimbly lands in front of Kim, shielding him from the monster. “Pick on someone your own size! Oh my god, that’s the actual cheesiest line. Can I have a do-over intro?”
“Huh?” the monster says. Rolling her eyes, Alya lets out a war cry and charges to slam her staff into the monster…and promptly gets her ass handed to her when it just grows bigger after she hits it and then flicks her away.
“Ow,” Alya moans. She untangles herself from the soccer net and runs at the monster again, but it lets out a rumbling, almost bored sigh and throws her into a row of seats around the stadium. Thank god for kwami superpowers, because otherwise Alya’s spine would totally be smashed to pieces right about now. On the other side of the stadium, at the very top, Alya spots the ladybug girl covering her mouth, making no attempt to jump in and help.
Okay, if Alya has to pull both their weights, she’s gonna be super pissed.
“You can do it, red bug hero!” calls a voice from nearby. Once she’s managed to extract herself, Alya pinpoints the source as the Adrien kid, who’s crouching near the entrance to the inside of the stadium, recording the fight on his phone with wonder in his eyes. Why is he even here? He hadn’t come along to P.E.; Alya distinctly remembers him asking to talk to Marinette back in the library.
Apparently, Adrien seems to have no sense of self-preservation, because he doesn’t move when the stone monster growls and rips up a soccer net, then hurls it in his direction. It’s purely instinct – adrenaline surges through her – Alya bounds across the stadium and throws her staff to catch the net above Adrien’s head. At the same time, a yo-yo comes hurtling out of nowhere, wraps itself around Adrien’s waist, and yanks him out of harm’s way so that Alya can retrieve her baton and let the net fall to the ground harmlessly.
“About time!” Alya says to ladybug girl.
“Sorry!” ladybug girl says. “I’m just…really not up to this.”
“You think I’ve had any experience before today either?” Alya says. “Let’s turn this guy into dust!”
“Kick his butt, awesome superhero girls!” Adrien calls from a safe distance.
“Excuse me, but the name’s…uh…Reine…Nuit…Reine Nuit! Yeah, Reine Nuit!” Alya – Reine Nuit – snaps her fingers. “Perfect!”
“Have you noticed now he grows bigger and stronger with every attack?” ladybug girl says. “We have to do something different.”
“Any ideas?” Reine Nuit says. Ladybug girl frowns.
“What’s your superpower?” she says.
“Uh…my superpower?” Reine Nuit says. “I mean, I’ve got super senses, this awesome staff –”
“No, no, you should have a special power!”
Reine Nuit blinks. “Shit. Maybe I should’ve let my kwami explain everything before I transformed.”
Ladybug girl snorts. “You think? I guess it’s up to me. Lucky Charm!” She tosses her yo-yo into the air and catches a ladybug-patterned wetsuit.
“Umm…handy?” Reine Nuit says. “So, uh, what’s the plan?”
“My kwami told me I have to break the object where the whatchamacallit – er, the akuma is hidden.”
“He’s literally made of stone,” Reine Nuit deadpans. “Unless you can figure out which rock –”
“His right hand!” Ladybug girl points. “It’s still closed! He never opens it. It’s like the Russian dolls – the object isn’t on him, it’s hidden in his fist!”
“Huh. Smart and cute.” Reine Nuit winks. “I reckon we’ll get along just fine. What’s your plan, red bug hero?”
“Hmm…”
Okay, Reine Nuit is eternally grateful that she didn’t end up with the Ladybug Miraculous. Ladybug girl’s plan involves sticking a hose into the Lucky Charm suit, yeeting Reine Nuit and then herself at the stone monster to make it drop the akuma, then getting Adrien to turn the hose on to inflate the suit and force the monster to let ladybug girl go. Once she’s free, ladybug girl smashes the dark object to bits, releasing a purple-veined butterfly that goes flapping off into the distance.
“Yeowch!” Reine Nuit cries when the stone monster dissolves into another classmate of hers and sends her crashing to the ground. “That. Was. So. Cool!”
“What’s going on?” the burly boy groans, rubbing his head, “What am I doing here?”
“You were incredible, red bug hero!” Reine Nuit gushes, jumping to her feet. “You did it!”
“Ladybug. Call me Ladybug. And we both did it,” ladybug girl – Ladybug – corrects. Purely by instinct, they punch at each other in a fist-bump, declaring, “Pound it!”
“Uh, what’s that?” Reine Nuit says when Ladybug’s earrings give off a loud beep.
“We’ve only got five minutes after we use our power before we transform back,” Ladybug says. “You should go. Our identities must remain a secret!”
“Yeah, yeah, first rule of superheroing,” Reine Nuit says. She bounds away, calling, “Until next time!” over her shoulder.
In the high of defeating a real live supervillain, Reine Nuit doesn’t realise that she’s forgotten to get one crucial detail from Plagg: how to turn back into herself. It’s not until she’s in her room that it hits her.
“Crud,” she says. “Uh…claws out? Detransform? Back to Alya?”
Nothing happens.
“I can’t be like this forever!” Reine Nuit cries. “I mean, not that I’d hate being a superhero forever, but I have a life and a family, and everyone will know who I am if I don’t turn back and –” She groans and facepalms. “That’ll teach me to rush ahead without listening to the magic black cat.”
Pouting, she slumps on her bed, fiddling with her ring, which is now black with a tiny green cat’s paw. She wriggles it off her finger, then gasps when she’s enveloped in bright green light that devours her suit and leaves her as just plain Alya again.
“Oh,” Alya says. “Uh…that should’ve been obvious.”
“Next time, you might wanna try not rudely interrupting me,” Plagg says when he’s zipped out of the ring and sprawled across Alya’s bed. “Claws in to detransform, by the way.”
“Right. Sorry.” Alya sits down on the bed next to the tiny kwami. “So, uh…what’s my superpower? If Ladybug’s is Lucky Charm –”
“Cataclysm.” Plagg says. “Destroys anything you touch. One-time use before you turn back. I’m so hungry!”
Alya blinks at him.
“What?” he says sullenly. “I gotta keep my strength up somehow. No food for moi, no more superhero for toi.”
“Ugh, fine,” Alya says. “Wait, what do you even eat, anyway?”
Plagg’s eyes light up. “Camembert! Beautiful, rich, stinky Camembert!”
“…Great.” Alya facepalms. “Now I’m gonna stink of cheese. Well…small price to pay for being a superhero, I suppose.” The words send a thrill through her.
“Damn right,” Plagg says. “Where’s my Camembert?”
“Alright, cat face,” Alya sighs, pushing herself back to her feet. “Wait here. I’ll get your icky cheese.”
Plagg’s cheers follow her out of the room. She pauses outside her door, shakes her head, then smiles and heads for the kitchen. Alya Césaire is now a superhero! Who would’ve ever dreamt that this would happen to her?

aufbrechen, um auszubrechen – Finding the love of my life in Ottawa
Tumblr media
Hello world!
You might be wondering why this entry is written in English. The answer is simple: It's because this is a very special one for a very special person. Exactly two years ago I met a man that I've been in love with ever since. And this is how our two paths crossed...
I arrived at the Ottawa airport in the late afternoon. Compared to Vancouver it was freezing. Snow was covering houses, trees and streets. One could assume it was actually winter. I took an Uber to my Airbnb which cost me about $30. When I had booked the Airbnb everything around looked pretty close. I actually thought I could walk into the city within 45 minutes. Oh, what a fool I was. After I arrived at my apartment in Gloucester, a suburb of Ottawa, and logged into the wifi I soon found out that the next grocery store was a 30 minute walk away. Needless to say that there was 10cm of snow covering the streets.
Tumblr media
But since I was hungry and the owner of the apartment was not home yet, I decided to go for that walk to buy myself some dinner. Except for that huge scarf I had bought in Revelstoke my winter gear was rather uncommon – two t-shirts, a sweater, a light jacket, a pair of jeans and runners. I'm still freezing just thinking about that walk. But when I came back I had dinner and some snacks in my backpack. So it was definitely worth it. I made myself some food and had great company – the owner's two cats. With my stomach full of spaghetti I went upstairs to my room. One of the reasons I went to Ottawa was to meet the OTM crew. OTM stands for One Track Mind and it's a group of people training for the decathlon. Kevin, head of that crew, vlogged about his life as a decathlete and put the videos on YouTube. I had been watching his videos for quite a while now and was eager to finally meet and train with the crew. Before I started my trip I had been emailing Kevin about the possibility of training with them. He liked the idea. So now I emailed him again asking about their training schedule for the week. While I was waiting for him to reply I opened up Grindr on my phone. I hadn't touched the app since Vancouver so I was interested to see if the Ottawa users were less creepy. And indeed most men on there seemed to be rather ordinary judging by their profile pictures. Also, I did not get any dick pics. So I was regaining trust in the app. Still, I did not use my real name on the app. I was Ben. Nice to meet you! Since I was still home alone I spent the night scrolling through numerous profiles of gay Ottawa men. If you are interested in a person you can either text them right away or send that person a flame to see if they like you back. Since I'm not good at taking the first step, I usually waited for people to text me or send me a flame. There was only one person that night that got my flame. His name was Brennan and I liked his greenish blue eyes. There was something faithful in his look. It did not take long for him to send me a flame back. My heart jumped a little when I saw that notification. Now it was time for me to take the first step. I started texting him on the app. Honestly, I don't even remember what my first lines were, probably something like „Hi, I'm Josef... I mean Ben. Nice to meet you!“. But whatever I said first, it must have worked because he texted back. I was super happy and we texted back and forth for quite some time. Finally, I got a text message from Kevin that there is training tomorrow morning and that he's gonna pick me up at 9am. It was 2am. Time to go to bed. I put my phone aside and fell asleep with a happy smile on my face.
I got up after less than six hours of sleep. But nothing could worry me because Brennan still texted back. After a quick breakfast Kevin picked me up to go to training. What I really like about Canadians is that they are so open-minded. I mean, Kevin just picked up a random German guy to take him to training. We had only texted a few times and soon after I was joining the OTM training session in the Dome at Louis Riel. I had never seen a 400 meter indoor track in my entire life. It was awesome! Unfortunately, none of the other OTM crew members showed up for that training. But two girls that I knew from Kevin's vlogs – Charlotte and Sveta – were also there. So that made it a bit less awkward. We spend the next two and a half hours doing long jump drills, short sprints, hurdles, med ball exercises, some weight training and finshed off with 2x300m. It was a lot of fun. I was super out of shape, but they still made me feel like I was part of the group. In the end, I got a cap from their coach James and two Ottawa Lions t-shirts from Zach, another coach from that club. I had a great time! Thanks a lot, Kevin!
Back at home, I took a shower, ate the rest of yesterday's spaghetti and went to a thrift shop that was next to the grocery store. I desperately needed a warm jacket. But I was unlucky. They did not have any jackets that I could wear with confidence. So I walked back to my Airbnb. I was lucky that I just made it before it started to snow like crazy. When I arrived I finally met the owner, Mark, and his girlfriend Kaitlyn. They were both super nice. While they were preparing their dinner we talked a lot about travelling and cats. After lots of laughs I went upstairs and started texting with Brennan again. We agreed on exchanging numbers and continued our conversation on WhatsApp. Since Kevin had told me that there was free ice skating Downtown and I needed to go buy a warmer jacket anyway, I knew that I was heading to the city the next day. So I suggested meeting Downtown. When Brennan did not they no right away I figured my chances were really good to actually meet that man with the beautiful eyes. Again, I went to bed with a smile on my face.
When I went downstairs to make myself some breakfast the next morning Mark offered to take me Downtown since he had a meeting there anyway. An hour later I found myself standing in the cold wind of Parliament Hill. I had booked 30 minutes of ice skating online. So I just rented some skates and had a great time on the ice without falling once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After freezing my butt off on the ice it was finally time to get some winter clothes. So I went to the Rideau Mall to get a nice warm jacket and some shoes. I texted Brennan to see what his plans were for the day. He actually considered coming Downtown to meet me. But I had some convincing to do. He told me how gross he looked today and I told him that I would really like to experience his complete grossness first hand. It kind of worked. He agreed to come and meet me at The Highlander Pub. We had a date! So now I did not only need a warm jacket and shoes but also a nice pair of jeans and a sweater since I was wearing some super worn out travelling clothes. I found everything I needed, got changed in the bathroom, stuffed my old clothes in a backpack that was way too small and looked in the mirror. Just one little detail was missing. I was still wearing my glasses. But since I did not have glasses on in any of my profile pictures I figured to better not wear them. So I didn't. It made my vision worse but helped my confidence. I checked my phone and Brennan just texted that he was sitting in The Highlander Pub, in the left corner when you enter. I loved how specific he was because it lowered the chances of awkwardly not finding each other immensely. And that's when I walked in and saw him for the first time. He smiled at me and I smiled back. I said hi and the rest is history. We had an apple cider and some good talks. We was funny, asked smart questions and made me feel super comfortable. After our Ciders we had some pizza at The Grand Pizzeria and Bar. That's where he asked me if I was actually gay. I had a good laugh and confirmed my gayness. Time just flew by. He showed me around the city. He took the picture of me hanging from the T of the famous Ottawa sign. We walked through the snow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Parliament Hill where we saw a little light show.
Tumblr media
After our amazing first date he drove me to my Airbnb. We hugged and said goodbye both knowing that this would not be the last time we saw each other. I went to bed with the biggest smile on my face.
After all the excitement the day before I slept super long. I went to get some Christmas presents for my family and headed to training after. This time the whole OTM crew was present.
Tumblr media
We did some sprints, weight training and shot put. It was fun to get back into training. After a shower at home Brennan picked me up to get some burritos at Mucho Burrito. On our drive there I took all my courage and placed my hand on his that was on the gearshift. I asked him if that was okay. He said yes. That made me really happy. At Mucho Burrito I ordered a Mucho Veggie, the vegetarian burrito option, and was asked what kind of meat I would like on that. Classic. Brennan and I had a good laugh about that and ate our delicious burritos. We headed to his place to watch a movie. Julia Roberts ate, prayed and loved. And we cuddled. The weather outside got super ugly. Snow fell like crazy and the wind was picking up. We both decided that it was not the best idea to drive or be in a car right now. So I stayed the night. To not rush things I slept in the guest room which is something we now laugh about a lot. Whenever I visit Brennan nowadays he asks if I want to sleep in the guest room again. Probably I should some day to relive the memories.
They next day started with lots of cuddles and breakfast. It felt like the right place to be. Brennan took me back to my Airbnb so I could make it to training in time. At training we just did some running and pole vaulting. I took an Uber home, showered and prepared my dinner. I spent the night at the kitchen table talking and laughing with Mark and Kaitlyn. They gave me a little guestbook to sign. Here is what I did.
Tumblr media
After that I went upstairs, packed my things and fell asleep right away. My Ottawa experience had been amazing so far. The next destination was Montréal although I liked Ottawa and especially Brennan so much that I just wanted to stay there.
The next day I left Gloucester and took the train to Montréal. The train ride was quite scenic so the time flew by and suddenly I arrived in the most populated city of Québec. When I left the train station to walk the few blocks to my hostel a windy negative 15 degrees celsius blew into my face. I had never experienced anything like that. It felt unreal. And very, very cold. I made it to the hostel in one frozen piece, checked in and got to my room. At hostel looked nice at first, but the eight bunk bedroom looked and smelled like prison. We had a little bathroom in there that probably hadn't been cleaned in two years. It was a mess. But it was cheap. I just put my stuff in that room and left it as fast as I could. The common area was nice though. And they had a big room for reading which nobody used. So I sat down there and started writing on my blog. After a while I could not concentrate anymore so I decided to go ugly Christmas sweater shopping. It's a family tradition that I started a few years ago. I basically put on every piece of clothing I had in my backpack and went outside. After a few failed attempts of finding a really ugly one I found this one.
Tumblr media
After my shopping success I went to the Museum of Modern Art. They had a Leonard Cohen exhibition. All I knew about him was that he wrote Hallelujah. So I was eager to learn more. I walked out of that exhibition three hours later thinking that I learnt a lot. But now the only thing I remember is his quote: There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in. I really like that quote, but still feel embarrassed about not being able to remember more. Not to blame anyone here but I was constantly texting Brennan while walking through the museum. One could say I might have been a bit distracted. After that nice educational visit I got a delicious falafel and went back to the hostel. The room was still smelly but so was I after the falafel. So I called it a day and fell asleep.
The next day I slept in a little, took a shower in one of the hallway bathrooms, got my breakfast and went into the city. I bought a few postcards and a nice sweater for Brennan as a surprise. After that I felt like I had seen enough of Montréal since all I could think of was Brennan. So I went to the train station to change my train ticket to be back in Ottawa earlier. That way I could spend one more full day with Brennan before leaving for Iceland. I paid $21 to change my ticket and was a happy man. Through the freezing wind of Montréal I walked back to the hostel to relax in that reading room nobody was using. When I went back into my room I met Charlie from London. He told me about a Christmas Market he wanted to go to and asked if I wanted to join. So we walked to that Christmas Market which felt a bit like a German Christmas Market. Just that it was trying too hard.

But it was at that place and time that I had my very first poutine. I felt super Canadian right away. The poutine itself was okay. It was more about the experience anyway.

After that Charlie went to a party and I went to bed.
The next morning I got up early to catch the train to Ottawa. On the train ride I watched Home Alone 1 on my laptop. It's the kind of nostalgia I like. With the perfect timing of Kevin hugging his mother in the end I arrived in Ottawa. Brennan picked me up at the train station. We went to our favourite – Mucho Burrito – and with a full stomach made it to his place. We spend all day watching movies and cuddling on the couch. I enjoyed every minute of it. Julie Andrews taught us the Do-Re-Mi as we were watching The Sound of Music. Later Melissa McCarthy food poison pooed in the sink in Bridesmaids. All in all, it was a successful day that ended with pizza and more cuddles. This time I upgraded myself to sleeping in his bed. We were both happy with that decision.
The next day it was time to say goodbye for now. I was headed to Iceland next and Scandinavia after. But I was already sure that I would pass on the last Scandinavia week and get on a plane back to Canada. I gave him the sweater I bought. And he gave me some beautiful gloves. I was so happy and so sad at the same time. He drove me to the airport, gave me one last kiss and the next thing I know is me waving him goodbye. At first, there was a lot of sadness knowing that this part of our story was over, that I was about to continue my travels and that I would not see him for some time now. But soon after I realized that it was just the start of it all. The start of something so beautiful words fail to describe. So I sat there at the gate waiting for my flight. I checked my phone. He texted. Heart emoji. This is just the start. There is so much more to come.
Ich liebe dich, Brennan.
