Photo taken November 19, 2009. Pompeii was one of the most interesting place we have ever been. It was amazing to see the ruins of a town frozen in time, seeing how the populace lived (and died). Hello from Pompeii, Italy! 🇮🇹🌋

Pompeii was an ancient city that was buried under 4-6 meters/ or 13-20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice during the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeii is now a UNESCO world heritage site and is extremely well preserved. It was a wealthy town during its time.

It’s pretty wild that I am actually here. After learning about it in school, I get to see things for my own eyes. I could really feel the wealth in the area just by the paintings, seeing the villas and gardens, and the craftsmanship in the tile work in the ground. It was astonishing to me that archeologists had to carefully dig away at all the ash to uncover this entire city. I spent over 4 hours here and I could not see everything. This is probably the best preserved site I’ve seen on my travels. The self guided audio tour was amazing. I highly recommend it.

Also, I have no sense of time on the road and didn’t realize it was Indigenous People’s Day in the US. So if you celebrate that, have a lovely feast and time with loved ones.

I’m solo, but happy and fulfilled alone. Don’t worry about me 😺

MOUNT VESUVIUS AT DAWN...

The moody, grey black bulk of Mount Vesuvius, seen from on board the Norwegian Epic as we were warped into our berth in the port of Naples.

The halo of cloud hanging above the grizzled old brute has a kind of fiery quality about it. And the copper red glow of the water is tinged with a sense of foreboding, too.

Day 114: anchored in the Port of Sorrento and visit to Pompeii . Sorrento is a town overlooking the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy. A popular tourist destination, the Sorrentine Peninsula has views of Naples , mount Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri. The Amalfi drive, connecting Sorrento and Amalfi, is a narrow road that threads along the high cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea. . On the day we visited the famous ruins of Pompeii, ancient Roman city that was buried under volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. . We spent the rest of our day in Sorrento, wondering along the narrow streets and tasting the limoncello, a famous produce of the area. I wished we had spent more time in the area. I tried to make the most of my time, unfortunately the last tender to go back to the ship was at 7:30PM.
