The first place to begin, however, is with the image of your company and yourself. It you want people to take you seriously, you need to be serious about your brand. 
I know, I know. Everybody talks like “brand” is the magic pill to dominance in a market. It’s not. Instead, brand is how people learn to recognize you across a market. Brand makes you easy to spot, easy to remember, and easy to recognize when you’re seen in a new place.
Critical components of brand:
Your name (your actual name or the name of your company)
Your face and your logo (if you have a logo). This can also include colors and fonts
Your description of what you do and what you offer
Your solution to your customer’s problems
That’s it. These components should be the same and applied the same across these platforms:
Your business cards
Your email address
Your email signature
Your phone message (especially if you have a work number)
Your website
Your social media accounts
Your letterhead/invoices
If you really want to go the bonus step, look for other areas to apply brand. For example, I got polo shirts made with my company logo on them. I wear them to every business meeting, networking event and tradeshow I go to. My shirts reinforce my brand, whether I hand out a business card or not. People see my logo on my shirt, then see it on my business card, then see it on my website. Everything is consistent.
A note on what makes a brand work: It’s not the cleverly designed “package.” It’s about how you use it. If you consistently use your brand, it will become recognizable. Your logo could be a squiggle. As long as you use it everytime you talk about you, people will identify the squiggle with you. Period.
Once you have your brand consistent across all streams of communication that a possible lead could interact with you through, now it’s time to employ them. I find my clients through these avenues:
Word of mouth and reputation
Referrals from previous clients
Calling up old producers I know
Following up on business cards I pick up at networking events
Meeting people at networking events
Conversations on social media
Contacts through the blogs I write, both for myself and other outlets
Facebook ads (yes, paid Facebook ads)
Randomly meeting people on the street (yes, this actually happens)
By far and away, my best leads have always come through word of mouth and through referral. Every single lead that comes this way come through the people I know and who know me. A bonus of this avenue is that if someone doesn’t need me but they like what I offer, they’re more likely to refer me to someone else they know. Word of mouth and referrals are powerful! 
However, this pool of possibilities did not exist when I started. It probably won’t exist for you when you first start. It takes a lot of time to build this but it’s worth the effort of growing. Whenever you complete the job and gain another happy client, that circle grows larger and becomes stronger.
Finding clients is hard work. It’s where most of your effort will be as an entrepreneur and freelancer. Actually doing the work for your clients will seem easy compared to the effort you’ll need to put into find the clients to work for. If you’re just starting out, be patient. Clients don’t grow on trees. They grow through relationships and those are built one step at a time.
