Harry just blinks back. “Payment,” Louis prompts, and Harry squints. “I’m paying,” he says, not a question, resigned to his fate. “I don’t carry cheques, or much cash.” Niall nods. “I take credit cards,” he says, and Louis’s head jerks up. “You do?” “I do. It’ll be £200 for the hour.” He’s going to buy Niall so many beers. Or maybe just one, since Niall is now £200 richer. “Now. What brings you here?” Louis looks to Harry, because he’d love to hear what Harry’s answer to that one is. Harry looks around, alarmed, and then stutters. “Erm, I think it’s because I let a plant die?” Niall tilts his head, but makes a note on the pad of paper in his lap. “You don’t sound so sure, Harry.” Harry looks to Louis, who shakes his head. “It was your suggestion, you answer the man.” “Louis, you sound hostile,” Niall says, and Louis glares. Harry mutters something under his breath. “I’m sorry, Harry, what was that?” “I just said that he does that a lot.” “I’m sorry, I do what a lot?” Louis turns his glare on Harry. He’s getting into it now. “Sound hostile.” “Hostile?” Louis says, raising his voice shrilly. Here we go. “I’m hostile? Well how can I not be hostile when you’re so dismissive?” “Dismissive?” Harry asks, and he looks so insulted Louis wants to high five himself. “Do you hear how dismissive he is?” Louis asks Niall, who is nearly vibrating with silent laughter at this point, his face schooled in a totally serene expression. “Let’s calm it down, please. This is a safe space. Harry, Louis has expressed some concern that you’re dismissive of him. What would you like to say to that?” Harry seems to be gathering himself, a line of tension down his side where Louis’s pressed against him. “I would like to say that that’s not true.” “I know why he’s dismissive, he’s ashamed of me,” Louis blurts, latching onto an argument he’s heard from friends in shitty relationships. “Oh no,” Niall says, poking a finger at his glasses and looking distressed. Harry flings up his hands. “That’s not true.” “He doesn’t want me to meet his family,” Louis says, and pouts. “Harry, do you want Louis to meet your family?” Louis feels a clutch of panic in his chest. Niall smiles sweetly, and Louis clenches his fists on his knees. He nearly topples over from surprise when Harry says, “If that’s what he wants then I’d love for him to meet my family. We can drive down to Holmes Chapel tomorrow, stay the weekend.” “I … what?” “That sounds magical,” Niall says, his accent almost slipping, voice wobbling slightly. He presses his lips together and Louis takes back the beer he’d been thinking of buying Niall. He’s going to make Niall buy him a beer instead. Or better, a ridiculously expensive meal and a couple of fancy cocktails.

Bet On It - popfly - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 23k, E – How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days AU. It's years since I saw the film so this was practically all new to me, and I could totally imagine Louis hamming it up wailing about Harry letting their love fern die. Because he would.

Big Sky - graceling_in_a_suit - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 30k, M – space AU, hybrids, vive le revolution. I'm not a particular fan of space stories and even so I completely loved it. Such a fantastic portrayal of competent, spiky Louis.

In Your Black Heart (Is Where You'll Find Me) - graceling_in_a_suit - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 36k, E – pirate AU, omega/omega, bamf!Louis for lack of a better term, which is my favourite Louis dynamic, let's be honest. It was WONDERFUL.

Love Is a Winning Game - Rearviewdreamer - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @all-these-larrythings – 47k, M – exes to lovers, game shows, fake relationship. Full on loved this. The game show scenes were a hoot, but it also had real heart and the added dimension of exes to lovers? Wonderful.

Glitter in the sky, glitter in our eyes - softfonds - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @softfonds – 59k, E – omegaverse, historical AU, courtesan Harry/Duke Louis. You know when you just... don't know what to say? This fic. The pining! Great.

The Last Something That Meant Anything - jaded25 - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – M, 95k – band break up (written 2014), emotional hurt/comfort. The angst is so good. The Louis whump is off the charts (which I love) but then also everything is so well developed from then on, no easy fixes or short-cuts.

A Taste of Desire - casuallyhl - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @casuallyhl – 104k, E – 19th century AU, cotton mills, omegaverse. SocialJustice!Louis! This one really stuck in my head. I was constantly thinking about it, and I still am two weeks later. It's also so immersive, I feel like I actually learned a lot about cotton mills. I appreciate that from a fic :D

For all it's problems, I hope Elon doesn't end up killing off Twitter.

I've already been through 2 social media shutdowns (Flipnote Hatena and Microsoft Popfly), and I never found most of the people I talked with, but Twitter is the first time I've actually found myself as part of the community, not just a sitting on the sidelines. I'd hate to lose those connections, made worse by the fact that everyone is being scattered to the four winds and I don't want to have to set up mastodon or return to Instagram (genuinely the worst social media I've ever used) or Facebook. (plus DeviantArt has decided to set itself on fire which limits options even more.

Anthony 'Popfly', Cedric 'Erick', Shaleekqua, Jovaugn, Lancouvre 'Lenny', Deonte, and Nicholas 'Rudy' were crewed up in the 155th St. trap.

Popfly explained, "All they be trippin' on is the n$gg$ d$ck size, homie, they be trippin' on it—"

Lenny laughed.

"N$gg$, they be on it talkin' like he da n$gg$ took they girl they don' even know a n$gg$. All they on his d$ck, bee. What he be sayin' he on one ain't dun nothin' an' he legit, n$gg$ ain't stressin'."

"An' dey be stressin'. Nah, thas why I ain't 'bout them white n$gg$s they be clownin', lookin' at n$gg$'s d$cks an' shi'. Too much hatin' on n$gg$s an' they be all about it," said Shaleekqua.

Popfly continued, "I ain't lyin', spittin' straight facts!"

Lenny and Deonte cackled.

The whole gang laughed.

Erick's phone began to ring. He answered his phone, speaking quickly to the gang at first to hit the laughter. "Naw, hol' up, OG hittin' me up— yo, what good n$gg$?— hol' up, n$gg$s, out the slam, foo'."

"What it be, slappin' n$gg$?" Asked OG Ice Pick.

Erick mouthed a shut the f$ck up at Shaleekqua who was still clowning. "Hol' up, Ice Pick on the phone. Nah, we chillin', we tight here, homie, they talkin' 'bout some white n$gg$ shi'," answered Erick.

Ice Pick chuckled and asked, "Yeah? Why, what dem white n$gg$s do now?"

"N$gg$ homie Popfly be on Facebook and they be wilin' out like why a n$gg$ tryin' for real?"

"What they do?" Asked Ice Pick.

"Nah, they be sayin' wild shi' 'bout some n$gg$ d$ck sizes from Congo—," explained Erick.

The gang laughed. Ice Pick burst out laughing, too, on the phone.

"Yeah, some Congo n$gg$s be havin' the most while they be—," explained Erick.

Ice Pick interrupted, "Congo? That be that African shi', bee. This be about that, n$gg$, sound like it be like that, they always on that, aight go on n$gg$, what they do?"

"Yeeeah, that's what I be sayin', hol' up like this shi' ain't make no sense, I be like," continued Erick.

Ice Pick added on, "White n$gg$s crazy, ma n$gg$ ain't nothin' change in the world."

"Right, bee, so what, you hangin' wit' Roley after allodat?" Jabbed Erick.

Roland 'Roley' was one of the white boys in Ice Pick's hood. He was white, but a Southie styled Bostonian doing heavy in the black business, drug enforcement, in New York.

Ice Pick lowered his voice into raspiness. "Nah, Roland upstate now. He be up there, he like it up there."

"Aight, yeah," Erick responded.

"Aight, bet, bet," said Erick, switching the phone to his other ear. Shaleekqua got up from her side of the table and walked over to Erick to hug onto him from behind. He set the phone on speaker so everyone could hear and set the phone on the table in front of him. "Tell 'm OG, you on speaker now, what all that with Jay-P and Quan, you ain't seen 'm in a minute."

The phone speaker resonated with Ice Pick's deep, raspy tone, as he explained the situation again for the crew.
