I've been watching European news channels, and there's been a massive power outage across Spain, Portugal, and southern France. The only reason some stations were even able to report on it was because they had generators to keep their broadcasts running and update the public. No one knows the cause yet — some suspect a cyberattack, while others believe it could be a climatological event.

Restoring electricity is the top priority, since nearly everything depends on it.

Cell phones aren't working, not even landlines, and there's no Wi-Fi either. There are no traffic lights, no trains, and no metro service. People have been trapped for hours in elevators and on trains. Hospitals are struggling to keep their backup generators running. Airports are at a standstill, and travelers can't even book hotels, leaving them stranded.

Nearly all the stores are closed because cash registers (and security system) won't work without electricity, so people can't buy food, candles, batteries, or even gasoline. Some people can't even access ATMs, and without cash on hand, they're fucked. "As solar panels heat up beyond 25°C, their efficiency decreases markedly. Green roofs moderate rooftop temperatures. So we wanted to find out: could green roofs help with the problem of heat reducing the output of solar panels?

Our research compared a “biosolar” green roof — one that combines a solar system with a green roof — and a comparable conventional roof with an equivalent solar system. We measured the impacts on biodiversity and solar output, as well as how the plants coped with having panels installed above them.

The green roof supported much more biodiversity, as one might expect. By reducing average maximum temperatures by about 8°C, it increased solar generation by as much as 107% during peak periods. And while some plant species outperformed others, the vegetation flourished.

These results show we don’t have to choose between a green roof or a solar roof: we can combine the two and reap double the rewards...

How did the panels affect the plants?

In the open areas, we observed minimal changes in the vegetation cover over the study period compared to the initial planted community.

Plant growth was fastest and healthiest in the areas immediately around the solar panels. Several species doubled in coverage. We selected fast-growing vegetation for this section to achieve full coverage of the green roof beds as soon as possible.

The vegetation changed the most in the areas directly below and surrounding the solar panels. The Baby Sun Rose, Aptenia cordifolia, emerged as the dominant plant. It occupied most of the space beneath and surrounding the solar panels, despite having been planted in relatively low densities.

This was surprising: it was not expected the plants would prefer the shaded areas under the panels to the open areas. This shows that shading by solar panels will not prevent the growth of full and healthy roof gardens.

What were the biodiversity impacts?

We used environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys to compare biodiversity on the green roof and conventional roof. Water run-off samples were collected from both roofs and processed on site using portable citizen scientist eDNA sampling equipment to detect traces of DNA shed by the species on the roof.

The eDNA surveys detected a diverse range of species. These included some species (such as algae and fungi) that are not easily detected using other survey methods. The results confirmed the presence of bird species recorded by the cameras but also showed other visiting bird species went undetected by the cameras.

Overall, the green roof supported four times as many species of birds, over seven times as many arthropods such as insects, spiders and millipedes, and twice as many snail and slug species as the conventional roof. There was many times the diversity of microorganisms such as algae and fungi.

Encouragingly, the green roof attracted species unexpected in the city. They included blue-banded bees (Amegilla cingulata) and metallic shield bugs (Scutiphora pedicellata).

How did the green roof alter temperatures?

The green roof reduced surface temperatures by up to 9.63°C for the solar panels and 6.93°C for the roof surfaces. An 8°C reduction in average peak temperature on the green roof would result in substantial heating and cooling energy savings inside the building.

This lowering of temperatures increased the maximum output of the solar panels by 21-107%, depending on the month. Performance modelling indicates an extensive green roof in central Sydney can, on average, produce 4.5% more electricity at any given light level.

These results show we don’t have to choose between a green roof or a solar roof. We can combine them to take advantage of the many benefits of biosolar green roofs.

Biosolar roofs can help get cities to net zero

The next step is to design green roofs and their plantings specifically to enhance biodiversity. Green roofs and other green infrastructure may alter urban wildlife’s activities and could eventually attract non-urban species.

Our green roof also decreased stormwater runoff, removed a range of run-off pollutants and insulated the building from extremes of temperature. A relatively inexpensive system provides all of these services with moderate maintenance and, best of all, zero energy inputs.

Clearly, biosolar green roofs could make major contributions to net-zero cities. And all that’s needed is space that currently has no other use."

🔪 Definitely flip4flip/siblings. Both being equally apprehensive in what they do and how they navigate their relationship outside of being …whatever they were.  It’s actually on a clear night when Toga makes herself know, climbing through Ochako’s window with little struggle. All mussed hair and tear streaks that make Uraraka want to caress her cheeks and wipe them with her thumb, to make it all better for Himiko. She just doesn’t know how. 

🛸 It becomes a regular occurrence. They don’t talk, barely even look at each other in the light of the moon. Ochako does what she does best. Opens her arms for Himiko to come curl into. Pink padded fingertips curling through blonde hair as the other sniffles silently. 

🔪 It seemed to be something that always happened at night. Himiko leaves like the wind when Uraraka wakes up for school. The brunette finds herself missing the blonde, wanting to cook and make sure she’s well fed and taken care of. 

🛸 And since it’s only at night that Himiko comes over and completely random when she decides to climb in and snuggle up, Ochako decides to take care of her when she can, when she’s allowed. She brings snacks and drinks despite not knowing what Himiko prefers. (She prefers whatever is Ochako’s favorite.) Downloads movies on her computer, couples extra blankets onto her bed for added comfortability and even goes out and buys them matching pj’s. (they’re button up, a soft pink with brown and blonde bears on them..) 

🔪 And when Toga finally does come climbing through her window, she’s ready. Soft lighting to mitigate her room's harsh LED’s. She’s sitting on her knees, leaning against the wall on the plush support of a pillow. She sees the moment the other girl panics, searching for her on the bed with frantic movements. Before Himiko can spiral anymore, Uraraka softly grabs her by the hand. Helps her slide onto the floor and into her arms. She doesn’t want to be too forward with it, but has no other way of coaxing the other girl into staying with her through the day. 

🛸 They wear matching bracelets, threaded and able to be tightened or loosened. if they were beaded, it’d probably have a pet name on it. Ochako would call Toga some shortened rendition of her first name, most likely Himi since the blonde wouldn’t like to be called by her family name. Himi doesn’t usually talk very much but when she does its usually to call Ochako by a shortened version of her name- Ocha. Softly whispered and shy. 

🔪 When they get comfortable, they snuggle up to each other. Himi likes to watch reruns of old shows–Care Bears, Hello Kitty–and sometimes scary movies with lots of blood like Scream or Halloween. Ocha likes to play video games on a portable console–sometimes Stardew Valley or Pokemon Scarlet/Violet. On the very frequent chances they want to watch a movie together, they’ll sit down with popcorn and gummies and stay up all night. They like to rant too each other about horror’s/slashers. Himi will think the blood is unrealistic and Ocha will think it was the perfect balance of adrenaline and gore. 

🛸 Both are creative- Himi likes to make bracelets and drawings that she’ll hang up on their wall. Ocha will make drawings and occasionally more intricate pieces like wind chimes or dioramas of space. 

🔪 Ocha will infodump about the solar system too Himi, ranting and raving about the new stars and planets NASA finds every day, how far away they are, whether or not they’re habitable. Himi will listen, thinking about taking Ocha far far away from here, into space, visiting all those planets no matter how far away they are because she loves her. 

🛸 Himi goes through teethers weekly, they don’t even have to be cold for her too gnaw right through them- eventually Ocha introduces the concept of chewlery and when they arrive on her front porch she can’t wait to show her girl- “Look Himi! Try biting through these!” to which she does, and when she finds she can't she is overly delighted. 

🔪 Both enjoy dressing in decora/pink, but occasionally both will take the tomboy route. Shorts that fall to their knees and shirts that have cool graphic designs (because for some reason only the boys section of the store has the cool tees.) They’ll go to the park late at night and take turns pushing each other on the swings. Tumbling down the slides with loud laughs and climbing on the monkey bars with not a care in the world. Ocha is abnormally good at climbing everything and Himi mainly favors the seesaw.

vrisrezi VS catradora parallels drive me nuts . im gonna list this by characters. keep in mind ive changed a lot of terms + locations + created an entire magic system out of boredom. a lot of characters arent one-to-one.

TEREZI:

Adora/She Ra. her form is called "LADY JUSTICE" and her sword is called the sword of balance. Grew up in the Empire's capitol; LOLAC. the Land of Lamplight and Coagulation. more on that with kanaya. She's a First One; stolen from the past through a portal. Mara is Latula/Redglare. the Sword of Balance is a portable runestone; the Banded Malachite runestone. Her main magic source is both Order and Chaos; both archaic forms of magic taught by G'lybgolyb, the horror terror guardian of their abandoned solar system, brought alongside when Latula brought the system to the Furthest Ring (outside the greater universe known as "Billious Slick", a frog-like cluster of Everything visible by telescope) Chaos destroys destiny, where Order brings it about. She has to find the balance.

i think adora's personality fits hers really well; brave, loyal, condifent, relentless, plagued with cripping self doubt. when the sword breaks at the end of s4, she grows her hair out after the timeskip. Pyralspite is her Swift Wind; a komodo dragon transformed into a big white annoying dragon.

VRISKA:

Catra. Her mom, Mindfang, was a sorcerer and the queen of LOTAT. the Land of Terminalia and Tapestries. their species is based on the poecilotheria metallica, Terminalia trees being part of the real species enviornment. they make tapestries out of webs. Mindfang, who at the time, is named Spinnerette. she's pregnant with Vriska, unknowingly. Spinnerette casts a spell to obtain power, through expanse magic (dark magic). She sent Aranea, very young, off to LOTAO, the Land of Trinkets and Optics, a kingdom of robots and refugee Carapacians. After casting the spell, her conciousness split into two; a forlorn Spinnerette and a viscious spider demon manifested by her own greed. She gained the power, but wiped out all life in her city. It then takes the role of the Crimson Waste. The runestone is thought to be defunct, the Pyrite-faced Blue Fluorite runestone, but it's just slumbering. Much like their city denizen, Cetus.

Mindfang flees to the Empire after facing a lifetime of imprisonment from the council of sorceres in LOSAS (land of shrouds and shards). She raises Vriska, well, "raises".

Being a P metallica, her venom is potent but not deadly. she can fall from large heights, can climb any non-glass surface, and instinctually loves the upper corners of buildings. Very fast. at the end of s3, in the portal, vriska and terezi's fight ends in terezi gripping her hand to keep her from falling into oblivion, and she separates her arm off with little trouble, the hemolymph sealing up. she spends s4 regrowing her arm, two molts, the first molt leaving her arm half-grown in a sling. she has 8 eyes, and 8 stupid little lenses. The yellow warning bands on her clothes cover her fragile joints, but she has similar warning bands on her skin below.

because of Mindfang's power obtainment spell, she gained some of that magic in the womb as an egg. She learns how to use Theft magic; stealing anything physically or conceptually (expanse/dark), Control magic; illusions and mind control (highly debated among scholars if its sunlight/light or expanse/dark, depending on its use). That's what Mindfang specializes in. To stand out, she learns Protection (sunlight/light) magic which includes luck.

The Empire's Capitol is thick with smog, so she's a bit athsmatic because she breathes through external booklungs on her ribs.

She and Rose are narrative foils, and are the two on Her Imperious Condescension's ship.

ROSE:

Glimmer #1. Her parents, Queen Lalonde and King Bro [sic], died when her and her siblings were young. Roxy, whos only a few years older, takes the role of Queen at age 13 and Dirk gets sent off to LOSAS (mystacor) to study magic.

Her crown is a Sun, and she starts wearing Roxy's accessories when Roxy stays behind in the portal in s3. All Strilondes have sashes on their clothes that represent all four of their colors.

They live in LOSAC (land of sycamores and celestials), and they have the White Opal runestone. They're called Celestials because theyre very distant descendants of "gods from the sky" (first ones). It's more of a legend, but they live a few hundred years longer than typical humans if not killed early. Their denizen is Nix.

The White Opal runestone gives them unique powers. Rose has the power of true divinity; she can see glimpses of the future. Divinity takes a toll on anyone's body and mind, and having this power granted by a runestone causes her to have painful migraines and dizzy spells. She resorts to using Order magic. After Roxy stays behind in the portal in s3, she starts communing with G'lybgolyb, and her magic turns to Chaos.

She and Kanaya (Scorpia) have a side enemies-to-lovers relationship.

DAVE:

Glimmer #2 with Bow traits. He's got half of a legendary sword and is ready to half-ass his way through everything. He and Karkat (Bow) are childhood friends. He doesn't really want to fight, but it'd be a waste if he didnt, because hes really good at it.

The White Opal grants him the power to stop time for a few seconds at a time. The limit grows longer as he gets older. He's not skilled in sorcery. The Time magic he's granted is ingrained, and he gets pretty good at it.

His crown is a Moon with two stars; Skaia (Etheria) is a double star system. I just REALLY wanna write out how that would work. He's the Moon to Rose's Sun.

He and Karkat have a slowburn romance, finally getting together after karkat returns from his post s4-hermit crab moment. (Karkat leaves and fucks off to do archiving work with his adopted mom. more on that later)

DIRK:

Castaspella/Micah but a prince. He's head sorcerer of LOSAS, Land of Shrouds and Shards.

His crown is a star with a purple gem in the middle. His necklace is the Heart symbol.

The White Opal gifts him the power of Spoken Manipulation; a branch of Amygdala (sunlight or expanse, depending on the scholar). He can control the sway of people emotions and actions through speaking outloud.

The magic he uses is Amygdala; manipulation over memories, emotions, and the concious/subconcious. Basically, he's a puppeteer, and everyone is his puppet.

in S4, after Rose becomes Queen and starts spiraling into Chaos, he gets captured by the Empire and presumed dead. He's on the Battlefield. Dave and Terezi eventually find out he's alive, after Rose goes completely off the rails and Karkat leaves the Rebellion. Dirk is on the Battlefield, but so is Aranea, and so is the Sufferer (Karkat's Rebellion leader crabDad)

ROXY:

Angella but not a mom. She's the Queen of LOSAC, and spends most of her time studying the natural world and science. She's an inventor, and very powerful. However, she doubts herself, and blames herself for her parents' deaths, so she stays behind while others fight.

The White Opal gives her the power of a Void pocket; an Infinite Void (void being a subset of Infinity) that she can place things in and summon things from. Separately, she Infinity magic, creating things from nothing.

her crown is Skaia; the planet, a thin ring, a golden planet (Prospit), an asteroid belt between the two, and a purple planet (Derse). Carapacians are involved. Etc

She gets left behind in the portal in s3, figuring with her magic she'll be able to find a way out. Rose is devastated at her loss, and Roxy ends up returning years later after Rose is captured by HIC on her huge ship. Roxy gets chipped, and she and Rose have to fight ala Micah and Glimmer.

KARKAT:

Bow. He's a crab guy, neolithodes agassizii from that fuckass NOAA official crab. He's got his Crab Cracker Scythes, and hes ready to leap into battle even if he sucks so bad at fighting.

He's had to fight off Empire assassins his whole life, because his father, The Signless, helped create the Rebellion. He's also a bit mutated, a melanistic form of the usual crab, with his blood is bright red like a human rather than blue like a crab.

Signless was raised in the Empire by Dolorosa, the Queen of the original city LOLAC. He fled, having to leave her behind, and helped kickstart the Rebellion.

He's been adopted by the Disciple. I tried so hard to give him two dads like Bow but nothing seemed to fit. So he gets a single mom, a retired Leijon Queen that archives history through writing, archaeology, and preservation. As well as a trashy romance novelist. Figuring out which is a memoir and which is just fictional smut is tricky. He wears a normal sized polo button up around her instead of a skin tight black turtleneck.

He's the glue holding the Rebellion together. Doesn't have magic, but does have sheer force of will. When he leaves to live with The Disciple after Rose goes off the deep end, its in shambles. He's close friends with Kanaya (Scorpia) at this point, so be trusts her with his location.

He and Dave have a good reunion after Dave/Terezi/Aranea/Rose/Vriska return from space.

JUNE:

Frosta #1-ish. From a tundra kingdom, called LOPAP (land of permafrost and petroleum). There are giant deposits of natural has below, and its one giant ice fortress.

The Star Sapphire runestone grants her family mastery over Ice. They all study magic as well. Their mastery over Ice can be seen in their designs; June's crown is small, but firm, showing she hasn't got a lot of attention span but holds strong. Her ice hammer is MASSIVE, but it melts at the end, showing her sheer force of will overpowers her lack of concentration.

She's also got an affinity for Infinity magic, an archaic form that creates something from nothing. Usually, that something depends on the user. She can create cold winds and storms from nothing.

She and Terezi straighten out the portal business in s3; Roxy gets left behind to take the sword out. As June specializes in infinity magic, she materializes in the normal timeline with Terezi. She has to kill her timeline duplicate. "Nothing to see here, guys."

Her double braids are from an early Frosta design! I wanted to encorporate the braids on someone.

JADE:

Frosta #2-ish. She's the most powerful Harlenglishcrockerbert by far. She wishes she could have a garden, and keeps a faux garden of ice flowers to satiate that need. Eventually, Nepeta (Perfuma role) lets her garden in her Tiger palace.

Her crown is sharp, perfected, smooth, and her ice gun is sleek and powerful. It all melts away when she falls asleep, as I'm nuking her with narcolepsy and fatigue.

She studies Space magic. It consists of adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, creating, and destroying matter. It's an archaic form, and shes VERY good at it given her extensive knowledge on atomic structures and general science.

She and Jane tend to struggle for a stronger connection to the Star Sapphire; Jade is naturally powerful and takes up a lot of the bandwidth, but Jane wants that power for herself.

Jade and Jane, of course, are two of the first to get brainwashed by HIC (one step below Horde Prime; but functionally the same. Works below Lord English). They become HIC's fascism playdolls to toss around.

JANE:

U get the jist. Functionally, she's the queen. She controls most politics in LOPAP, including semi-corporations. She's the only one doing any actual ruling. She communes with their denizen, Typheus.

She and Roxy have a bit of a Spinnerella and Netossa vibe; with Jane brainwashed, Roxy's goal is to find her and gwt her back. Roxy does come back from the portal from her void powers.

She's highly efficient at her ice magic; her crown is tall and forbiding, and her weapon is a pristine ice fork with a massive and beautiful ice sphere at the bottom. its based on one of her in canon weapons.

Jane's just in a constant power struggle. She specializes in Anatomical magic, a truly neutral form of magic. It's highly debated, as it's control over living tissue and orher various body parts. It can be used for healing, or things like breaking someones spine and putting each piece in the brain.

JAKE:

guy who needs a BREAK.

He's not great at retaining his ice magic, with his crown melting and his dual pistols being small. However, he had an affinity for Hope magic; a kind of expanse magic so powerful it is kept secret. Hope is a dangerous thing, and he can control that hope. If he gets charged up with his and his peers hope; he can let out a burst of blinding, stunning light that can destroy or build that hope in anyone who witnesses its' brains.

he and dirk were lovers at age 13, before dirk got sent to LOSAS. they broke up, and are like weird and gay with each other whenever they see each other. they end up together at the end.

FEFERI:

Mermista. She's Meenah's only successful clone, infused with a chunk of the Coral Runestone. Meenah got bored of her being such a cute and happy baby that she left her with the LOPAU (land of pearls and undertow) royal family, then killed them all. Feferi is basically a sleeper agent, happy to be a princess, but can easily be "activated" by Meenah or Condy.

All Peixes clones also have a chunk of the Pink Diamond runestone in their solar plexus. It grants them the ability to control water.

With two runestones in her, and a true connection to the Pink Coral runestone, she has Anatomical magic at the ready. Her Anaromical powers manifest in blowing bubbles from her mouth; sometimes healing, sometimes Harming, whatever she chooses.

Her crown is meant to minic an anglerfish. Her and Meenah's color pallates are the same shades in grayscale; hers is more vibrant because she actually goes out in the sun. Meenah stays indoors, and isn't seen often by the Rebellion, so no one is able to piece together the whole clone thing.

She's ever pursued by Eridan, who she likes greatly as a friend. She's better friends with G'lybgolyb, who she talks with im her dreams. Her kingdom's denizen is Hemera.

ERIDAN:

Seahawk/Double Trouble combo. Based a bit off of a Blue Ringed Octopus. He's got the ability to morph into different people, though he's self concious of his ability as his shapeshifting imagery is just a bit... Off. Most people don't notice.

Constantly going after Feferi. He's not magical, hes good with a harpoon gun, and he's great and slutting around like a pirate. Comic relief to start out with.

Eventually, in s4, he realizes the Rebellion might actually lose. He double crosses them, and takes his services to the Empire. Like a coward, he rejoins the Rebellion. Most dont forgive him. Feferi works on accepting him again, knowing he's not only a massive pussy with no solid principles, but hes her friend.

KANAYA:

ough. Scorpia. One of my favs. She's the princess of the kingdom the Empire took over; the Land of Lamplight and Coagulation. Lamplight is an abundant glowing rock that attracts mothkind in the dark. Coagulation refers to the rich deposits of garnets in the ground. She at first has no connection to the Tsavorite Garnet, a bright green runestone.

Her mother, Dolorosa, the old Queen, is basically kept in an air-filtered tower; unable to leave because the smog outside is so thick that shell die if she breathe it in.

Their denizen is thought to be dead, but Echidna is just sleeping. She talks to Kanaya in her dreams, parting omniscient knowledge on her that she has to piece together over time.

Kanaya wears a giant respirator outside. She also had a giant chainsaw.

Once connected to the Tsavorite Garnet, she gains a form of Space magic revolving around combining, mending, and stitching anything from real matter to concepts to memories. VERY powerful.

She and Rose ofc have their romance over 4 seasons. At first, she's obsessed with Vriska, absolutely in love. In season3, after Vriska sends Aranea to the Battlefield (beast island) for refusing to start the portal, she becomes disillusioned, and starts to doubt her entire worldviews. She thought the Empire was good, and she was just doing her job!

She's based on a Luna moth, however i took inspiration from other moth genera and at some point in s4 she Does go rainbowdrinker and starts drinking blood.

NEPETA:

perfuma catgirl. She lives in LOLCAT (Land of Little Cacti and Tigers). Most tigers are a kind of white tiger, but tinted olive green. She has that olive green albinism trait. They've adapted to dry, desert traits, and it helps camoflauge in the white sands. Sort of a a Tuscon type enviornment.

Shes got all the traits of a cat! Her runestone is Shiny Tiger's Eye, and it gives her Amygdalan powers. If she licks one of her fingers or just straight up puts her tongue on someone, she can sway their emotions. It's not incredibly powerful, but her physical traits more than make up for it. stone cold killer. kingdom of carnivores.

equius (Empire lackey ala kyle/lonnie/rogelio) is her friend, and their friendship transcends empire/rebellion boundaries. "join the rebellion!" "No." "join!" "No." "JOIN!" "No." "dont make me lick u!!!"

ARANEA:

Entrapta. The only humanoid in a city of robots. the Land of Trinkets and Optics is full of old, abandoned electronics. Aranea has hooked it up with giant, robotic camera eyes all over the city. She collects things; trinkets, knowledge, secrets. She's also Sheldon Cooper but a shrill woman.

Growing up, she never knew who her family was. She never saw anyone else of her kind, and knew the legend of the Land of Terminalia and Tapestries being wiped out in one night. She lives in a giant maze, and spends most of her time observing.

She has no connection to the defunct Pyrite-faced Blue Fluorite runestone. Secretly, she has learned Control magic. Very good at manipulating her surroundings and the people around her.

When she gets left behind in s1, she meets Vriska. They freak out, because they look the exact same. They ally in secret until she's discovered. Mindfang reveals that theyre sisters. And with time, they realize they just fucking hate each other.

Aranea also had a backpack full of eight giant robotic spider limbs that she wears constantly, but i did NOT feel like drawing it.

She dons a blue mesh overdress when she joins the Empire, filtering out the smog. She offers to make Vriska one, but she's too stubborn to accept the help.

I actually despise Entrapdak, but making Aranea Entrapta and Meenah Hordak, i cant stop the arameen from happening.

Eventually, Aranea tries to kill Condy herself with her own scheme, gets pur in her place, and decides to join Condy. The brainwashing doesnt work because of magic mental shields or smth. Shes just happy to be of use to anyone in power so she herself can have some.

MEENAH:

Hordak. She's a clone of Condy, cast out because she tried to kill Condy and replace her. Now she wants back. Building her own empire. CEASE REPRODUCTION etc.

She's got the power to control water, and after being on Skaia for so long, she learned Theft magic. She can steal life force, and uses it to give herself more years and better health.

Condy herself is cursed with Theft magic from an old Lady Justice. If Condy kills someone, their years are added to her near infinite lifespan. If she gifts that life to someone else, her lifespan will decrease. The lesson is that, in order to die, she must give that life to another. She just cant stop killing people though.

All her armor is entirely impractical, not useful in battle at all, just for show. She prefers to let others do her dirty work, until she can gain glory and swoop in the victory herself.

She's not... necessarily redeemable? But she has a change of heart when Condy starts brainwashing everyone, realizing why she herself rebelled in the first place.

Land of Fluorescents and Festivities: Elberon, party town where many Prospitians stay.

News from the Hurricane

Still in Charlotte but the deliveries from Amazon are starting to roll in, giving us supplies we will need to go back in the next couple days. We now have a portable toilet, a solar panel for our large power bank, and a safety gas can that will let me carry and store five gallons of gas without freaking out about it constantly. I also got bath wipes and those shower caps they use in hospital for waterless hair washing, plus more paper plates and plastic cutlery. Most importantly, I sank just an obscene amount of money into a legit battery pack for my CPAP, one that is supposed to last for 4-6 nights per charge rather than one night per charge like the power bank.

Being in Charlotte is comparatively great, we are staying with family and they have a guest room so we have privacy, lights, air conditioning, toilets and showers. I don't forget for a minute how lucky we are. It has still been kind of rough at times, sometime in weird ways. I came right to the edge of a mini-breakdown in Walmart yesterday, trying to stock up on things that were not available, trying to decide what was important enough to add to our very limited car space, wondering what things are going to be like when we get back and what I'm going to be kicking myself for forgetting. And around me everyone else was just shopping like normal, of course, because life is normal here. It was a little like being in a dream where I knew I had to get ready for something important and scary but nobody else around me understood anything was happening and whenever I tried to find something it wasn't there. I ended up cutting my trip short and sitting in the car to decompress with emergency candy and some texts with my best friend, talking me down from hundreds of miles away.

It finally occurred to me last night that now that we have a gas can, whole new horizons of supply-getting have opened up for us. If we take that gas can back and I put it in the minivan, I can easily make it back to Charlotte, or to Greenville, or several other places depending on which roads are open. We can get more stuff, it's just a little more complicated right now. It was enough to calm my rabid squirrel brain down and let me relax, at least. Things are going to be okay. The power will not be off forever. Heck, once we get the power back on we will be able to help the folks on city water who need to wait for the treatment plants to be repaired before they get water.

Oh, and my dad talked me out of buying the last gas-powered chainsaw at Lowes just because I thought I ought to have a chainsaw and this was the LAST ONE. I think I probably owe him one for that. Sure I had some vague idea of helping with a chainsaw crew, but I don't even know how to use a chainsaw. I know how to run a shelter and do mass-care feeding and drive an emergency response vehicle, why on earth would I try and help out with a chainsaw instead?

On the actual news front, our family in Spruce Pine is safe and sitting pretty on generator power, just completely cut off. My 101 year old client is safe too, taken out of town by his adult kids as soon as the roads opened up. And I heard from our neighbor this morning, there is cell service in our neighborhood, patchy and poor but real! Things really are looking up.

Sitting here, sipping my coffee...thinking, as I often do, about the future.

I live in Michigan. When climate change was something "experts could be lying about" I started noticing the changes. I spend alot of time in nature. With animals and native plants. I am an amateur forager, science nerd. In photography, my favorite subject was mushrooms. I noticed...that my winters began getting snow later, first. I live in the north-north. Where it is traditionally colder for longer and my warm seasons are shorter (zone 3 and 4). Winter wouldn't decide to be here til late December. When it used to come October 31st. Which was it's own eerie kind of spooky. Subtle. Slow rearranging of your known reality.

Then, the tornados that I don't usually see in my state hit in early december. Not even two hours away from my house.

My mighty lake, which shields me from the worst storms from Canada and absorbs any that make it this far inland...suddenly feels like a smaller shield. Lake affect doesn't just drop boat loads of snow, that's something alot of people don't know. Sometimes, the difference in temperature creates a dip that attracts storms coming towards it. Like a vacuum. I've watched it happen hundreds of times.

A storm predicted to hit my town will pass right over it and dissipate over the lake. Then my autumns began to come later as well, as if playing catch up with the winter. Wait for meeeee.... My summers began creeping into the fall, getting longer. I suddenly had more of a fighting change with my vegetable garden which was always a challenge with the work grind life. All of this felt very welcome. The cold weather has always had an element of challenge to it. Me and my boots climbing over three and four feet snow banks, living on a hill, trying to dig us out and not slide all the way to the bottom of my driveway. Trying often in vain to start seedlings early inside the house in crazy looking arrangements, with pots and grow lights everywhere, really needing a dehumidifier to fight pests and mold because I live near a swamp.

Then my springs seemingly disappeared. I would go winter to summer. In a kind of wild whiplash. There was no gradual change. It either was or was not. Michigan's notoriously unpredictable winter...became glaringly predictable for a couple years.

Then, these last two winters. I saw almost no snow. My daffodils came up in february. The bears came out, in a kind of confusion, in February. My trees didn't bloom because they woke up too early. It's like all of nature knew something had changed but not everyone was equipped to deal with it. My bug populations BOOMED. Suddenly I had spiders everywhere. I saw less mosquitoes. And less rain, living somewhere where I always have plenty of water.

My swamp wasn't wet. The questionable became undeniable.

But how does a solar cell actually work? Sunlight, which consists of individual light quanta called photons, is absorbed in the solar cell.
