Accidentally Wes Anderson: The Postcards
I ordered two sets of Accidentally Wes Anderson: The Postcards in July. And then I kept looking at looking at the AWA Instagram site, anticipating the U.S. release of those cards on October 11. Yes, I knew the date. This was exciting stuff.
Guess what? As soon as I saw the postcards I knew I needed two more sets because I used this hashtag when I sent the first ones: #onetosendonetokeep. Yep, for every one I sent I knew I had to keep one. They're that cool. Other people are doing the same.
Which brings me to something cool: While the launch was going on, Wally Koval, the author of the NYT Bestselling book Accidentally Wes Anderson, took time out of his day to have a chat about the book, the postcards, and how AWA has cultivated a very engaged and creative community.

To the Guy Listening to Kansas in His Yard, It's allergy season in Portland, and maybe you thought that's why my eyes were wet. You couldn't have known what l'd just come to know, about my friend Rob, a man who'd held nothing back, who worn his whole life in his eyes, who'd died, days earlier, alone. Whatever you thought, when you saw me coming, you didn't hesitate. You tipped your beer. You smiled. You kept nodding to the words you'd put into the air, words I'd sung, and laughed at, but only now heard: Carry on, my wayward son. •Brian Benson @offassignment @postcardist @postcardnstamps @postofficepics (at Post Office-Portland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjrEqyjO1Ev/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Writing Letters in Fisherman’s Terminal
Last night was pretty magical on lots of levels.
First Tabetha and I got dinner at Chinook’s in Fisherman’s Terminal. I have lots of memories going there as a child with my family, especially my Grandma Gerry. Tabetha talked a lot about mother woes raising a teenager, and just hard moments between her and her son that have challenged her inner compass. I was happy to listen, and comment where it was warranted. I’m truly to lucky to have her as a friend. I felt like I was learning more than anything. I remember times where Dad and Mom had moments with me they wouldn’t be proud of either, but we’re all human. Our children forgive, get to know us, and learn parents mean no harm. It’s hard loving people so much, and wanting what’s best for them. Wanting better for them than what we may have had growing up. You can’t do the right thing every single time...you just can’t. Love you, Tabetha! I secretly hope Stuart decides to stick around for work.
Then, we headed next door to Constellation & Co. for the main event. We paid a very small ticket price to have the pleasure of attending an off-hours letter-writing session with Sarah McNally (the shop owner). She’s one fascinating lady, and I hope she has more fun events in the future. I re-met some folks, met new ones, and just had a great time giggling about normal person-life things. Like “who was that one bald quarterback for the Seahawks?” No one knew. Thank goodness for the internet.
I watched Sarah try out her grandfather’s feather quill pen with ink that looked very much like blood. I have a glass quill pen, but I haven’t gotten a good feel for it yet. I remember buying it in Ashland, OR though when I went to the Shakespeare festival with highschool drama club. I listened as Sarah explained more about how to take care of her clear Lamy pen as well. I folded envelopes, wrote two letters, which actually are the two oddest letters I’ve written. I showed Tabetha how to use my envelope templates...just had a really nice time! Andrea and Kimmy, I’m sorry if you think my letters are the weirdest things you’ve ever seen. They were at least fun to write. Note to self: Go to Trader Joe’s and get avocado Tzatziki sauce. Yum! We purchased some items, and below you’ll see what I came home with. Very nice evening! Can’t say that enough.
Sarah even tipped me off to a podcast by artist Frank R. called the Postcardist, and I can’t wait to give it a listen. She even shared her Spotify letter-writing playlist with me. I had such a great time listening to it on the way home.
Yay for local nerdage! Thanks, Sarah for having all of us! loved every minute.
