Some thoughts about SharePoint and Unit Testing
Through this post, we are going to try to have a reflection about SharePoint and Unit Testing.
Introduction
Let's be honest: here, we are not going to picture the perfect solution to write good unit tests easily when we use SharePoint as a development platform. Writing unit tests when we develop something for SharePoint can be really hard and discouraging. However, we are going to overview a few options to achieve this and to have a better conscience (or not).
Whatever development model we choose, we will face some problems and scratch our head to the bone. Some even say that SharePoint was not designed with testability in mind. However, let's see various ways we can explore.
Option 1: avoid Unit Testing
This option is pretty radical and simple. It depends on whether we can live with it our not.
Option 2: use third-party tools dedicated to SharePoint
There are several tools dedicated to SharePoint that can help us to achieve Unit Testing against SharePoint. However, good ones required to use our credit card and don't assure that everything will go smoothly.
Option 3: wrap SharePoint objects
When we develop using the .NET Framework and want to write our various tests, it is really common to use tools such as Moq to create fake objects to easily isolate what we want to test. Now, with SharePoint, our main problem is the code that depends on SharePoint. Using Moq to mock SharePoint will most of the time lead us to a dead end. SharePoint classes are often sealed and some objects cannot be instantiated without an HTTP Context. Maybe we will succeed to mock a few things, but the result won't be satisfying and will probably be messy.
One workaround to that problem is to wrap the values of the various SharePoint objects we need in classes or structs that we control and can easily mock. This will require to create extra classes, but, if we use these various wrappers, it can ease Unit Testing.
Option 4: create another layer
This option makes use of "Option 3" and leads us to create another layer between our code and SharePoint. It means that instead of using the various SharePoint APIs directly, we create one or more objects (Services, Proxies or whatever we want to call it) that we will work with. These objects will then work with the various SharePoint APIs, directly or through Repositories, it depends on how we want to implement this concept, and return wrapped objects.
With this solution, it means that we can concentrate usage of SharePoint objects in a restricted area and decouple our code from SharePoint APIs. So, it means in things like Event Receivers or code behind Control Templates, instead of using SharePoint classes we use our different Services. It makes our code more testable and avoid code duplication.
However, most of the methods exposed by SharePoint objects don't have a return value. So, if we have a Service that communicates with a Repository, how can we know that SharePoint failed or succeeded in achieving the requested operation? Well, sadly, we have to find workarounds. For example, when we add an SPItem to an SPList, we can count the number of items before and after the operation and check if the item exists in the updated collection and return a boolean value depending on the scenario. This leads to extra code and to extend the time of the operation, but we will have an answer.
Of course, this option could lead to over-engineering problems and there will always be a point where we will face SharePoint objects. We also have to take extra care of the SPContext, SPSite and SPWeb objects handling because it could raise sever exceptions if we do it without caution.
Option 5: create a console application
This is not really Unit Testing. However, we can imagine creating a small console application using C# or PowerShell that will check, after we deployed our package, if our various Features were installed and activated or if our Lists are in the right place. It involves the whole SharePoint installation and "real" data.
Conclusion
Through this article, we explored some options we have when we want to Unit Testing against SharePoint. We can see that Unit Testing, in such a case, is not really easy and can bring us pain and suffering, and maybe more than if we would do it with another platform or framework. However, we have a few possibilities than can make us more secured with our development. It is up to us to decide which solution is the best depending on what we want to achieve and to accept that some things can only best test by hand and to remember this good old "try...catch" thing is here for us.

Interestingly, everything was returned correctly except the GroupId. The output of the script returns the template that should contain the word GROUP, the GroupId, and the Owner of that site (which is the Group). We did it by executing the following PowerShell script. Therefore, we had to ensure that our site is a group. Usually, once a group is being deleted, the associated site is marked to be deleted and then processed by a timer job at Microsoft.Īt first sight, it looked that something is handled improperly by the life cycle management of group expirations. This user is responsible for cleanup SharePoint Online sites after an Office 365 group has been deleted. The AAD to SharePoint Sync user deleted twice the site in a month. We performed the restore but started to dig deeper into the case to see what might be the root cause by verifying the Office 365 audit logs. We haven’t performed additional checks because in many situations owners just missed the expiration notifications for their group.Ī month later, the same group of users came back to us stating that their site disappeared again. We fixed this problem by restoring the SharePoint Online site. We received complaints from a group of users complaining that their SharePoint Online site disappeared without prior notice. This will considerably reduce cases of users forgetting to extend a site while they are actively using it.Īn interesting anomaly with group expirations If you don’t know the deleted site url, you can use the command Get-SPODeletedSite to list all the deleted sites with Url.Microsoft is going to introduce activity-based group expiration policies in Q1 2020.

So you can use the SharePoint Online Management Powerhsell cmdlet Remove-SPODeletedSite to remove the deleted sites from Recycle Bin.īefore proceed Install and Connect SharePoint Online PowerShell Module, then run the below command to remove a deleted site. Manually deleting the sites from Recycle Bin will be a tough task. So you have to remove the deleted site first from Recycle Bin to have the same group site url. Now you can create another O365 group with same name and email alias (group email address), but it will not create the associated team site with same url and it will place a numeric number after the site name in the URL (For example: ). If you delete this O365 group, it will also delete its associated site, both the group and site will be moved into Recycle Bin. Note: The permanent delete option is only available from the Classic SharePoint Admin Centre, it is not available in the Modern SP Admin Centre.Ĭonsider that you have a Office 365 group that named as TestO365Group and the O365 group should have a associated team site (). Under this error message you can also see the option Permanently delete the site collection from the recycle bin and continue., you can check this option and proceed to remove the deleted site from Recycle Bin and create a site collection with same site url. If you are creating another site collection from SharePoint Online Admin portal, then you will get the validation error The site collection already exists. In this case, you can create a site with the same name but you can’t reuse the deleted site url until the deleted site exists in Recycle Bin. Scenario 1:Ĭonsider that you have deleted a team site and you want to create another site with same name and site url. You can restore a deleted site before this retention period time end. The deleted sites are automatically emptied from the Site Collection/Tenant Recycle Bin after the retention period. When you delete a SharePoint Site from Office 365, by default the deleted site will be retained in the Site Collection Recycle Bin for 93 days (Retention Period) and if you have deleted a site collection, then the site collection will be retained in Tenant Recycle Bin.

The Good And The Bad
The 4L60E can be classified into both an early version as well as a late version. Given such, the differentiation occurred in 1996. With many variations, the easiest to recognize externally is the removable bell-housing found on the late model 4L60E transmissions. As the arrived in 1996, it was not fully created in until 1998. With this transmission not as widespread as it once was, there are still some applications that GM uses for this 1998 transmission. This transmission can still be found in light-duty van applications and even in the overseas market in the Holden Commodore.
The popularity of this transmission was based on many of the carryover features. The low speed performance capability was one of them. Additionally, the transmission also featured strong fuel economy performance. Then, there was the addition of the electronic control that improved the performance of this transmission tremendously. Given its performance, there were common issues with the transmission; the component’s ability to use the reverse gear was seen as a grave issue. This was generally caused by buildup of debris.

For many, the 4L60E transmission is a good transmission, but for others, it appears as if it is the worst transmission ever made. One GM owner stated: “My opinion is that the 4L60E is not the worst transmission ever made. Did you buy the truck new or used? If used, then one has no idea exactly what the transmission went through before you bought it.”
Another 4L60E owner added: “The 4L60E is as common as the TH350 except it is newer and bigger. No, its definitely not the most defective transmission on the road. Most all vehicle manufacturers have their “Problem children”. When I was at the Oldsmobile GMC dealer back in the 80’s it seemed that all I ever worked on was the 440T4. They would be lined up out the door and I made a ton of money on them. They were replaced by the 4T60 and 65E’s. Aftermarket has pretty much taken over with the 4L60E’s much like the TH350’s. There are aftermarket parts I prefer to use in my overhauls of these. GM had some design flaws in these which got corrected by GM and the aftermarket. How Can I Tell If My 4l60e Transmission Is Bad?
When it comes to troubleshooting the 4L60E, you have to keep in mind that the automatic transmission (4L60-E) in your rear wheel drive GM vehicle will usually experience failure in one of two ways:
The Transmission Will Begin Slipping
Internal mechanical failure will be the cause of transmission ‘slippage’.
Your transmission fluid will appear at a low level. This is generally due to a fluid leak somewhere which will result in the transmission slipping.
Transmission Fails to Shift Out of Gear
Generally, this problem will arise when the PCM will sense an electrical issue and commands the transmission not to move and stay in “limp mode”.
While the transmission is in “limp mode”, the automatic transmission will fail to downshift or upshift.
How Long Do 4l60e Transmissions Last?
Different 4L60 owners offer their perspective on the longevity of the 4L60e transmission:
Owner Number One:
“It really depends who you ask. Some say it's on borrowed time, and others will say it will be fine as long as it shifts good and all. I'm somewhat in the middle. I'd be a little hesitant, but I also wouldn't be terribly worried of I drove it and it felt good with no slippage or harsh shifts.”
Owner Number Two:
“I have close to 300k on my truck back in the day before I sold it. (The) 4l60e from 1996 held up well. Reverse (kind of) was finicky, every now and then it would slip but had a good life. I honestly think around 250-300k it should be rebuilt if its original.”
Owner Number Three:
“To answer it in short, I took ($2000) put it aside for the (transmission), learned over the fourteen years I’ve owned it, (that it’s a matter of not if, it’s when). (I changed) the fluid regularly and found adding a bottle of Lucas non slip is the best thing. Typically (I) think most that stuff is snake oil but I’m telling you it works, keeps solenoids from sticking too. I do it yearly. Don’t use (overdrive), unless you’re going over 60, you’ll get the same mileage and won’t be wearing the 3-4 out. I drive it easily in 1st till its in 2nd then slowly give it more throttle. Driving it hard that 1-2 shift seems to shorten life How do I know, I’ve been through 5 of these. Just my opinion. (My first transmission) lasted less than 100 miles. (The) last one lasted close to 100k (miles). Seems most of these around 40-50 can go.” Hope you make 300k. (If you do, I would be) shocked. Go easy on them they aren’t all that great, (in my opinion).”
Owner Number Four:
“I would be more interested in the number of shifts before failure. Wear in a transmission in my opinion- mainly occurs during shifts. Once the transmission is in a gear it should see very little wear. Towing and heavy abuse increases fluid temps and reduces lubrication resulting in more wear during shifts. Yes, clutches wear but that is mainly when they slip during application and release. So, to just go off mileage alone is probably not the best way to judge. A 4l60e that has 300k miles from towing between the coasts could be in better shape than one with only 50k miles on it that was stop and go with thousands of shifts per day.”
What Is the Difference Between A 4l60 And A 4l60e Transmission?
The biggest difference between the 4L60 and 4L60E is how both are controlled. For 4L60E control comes from a computer. For the 4L60, control comes form a TV cable. With one being controlled by computer and the other not, there are compatibility issues that the two have.
If you tried to put a 4L60E transmission in the place where a 4L60 once resided, prepare to buy an aftermarket transmission controller so that you can control it.
If you don’t, it will not know when to kick down, when to shift or the speed of the vehicle. The 4L60 transmission would require a custom bracket to hook into the TV cable properly. Additionally, when comparing both transmissions, they don’t also don’t have the same geometry for engaging the torque converter. As a result, you will need torque converters to accomplish engagement.
Similarities Between The 4L60 and 4L60E Transmissions

Automatic installation of WinUSB without an INF file
As an OEM or independent hardware vendor (IHV), you can build your device so that the Winusb.sys gets installed automatically on Windows 8 and later versions of the operating system. Such a device is called a WinUSB device and does not require you to write a custom INF file that references in-box Winusb.inf.
When you connect a WinUSB device, the system reads device information and loads Winusb.sys automatically.

Installing WinUSB by specifying the system-provided device class
When you connect your device, you might notice that Windows loads Winusb.sys automatically (if the IHV has defined the device as a WinUSB Device). Otherwise follow these instructions to load the driver:
Plug in your device to the host system.
Open Device Manager and locate the device.
Select and hold (or right-click) the device and select Update driver software.. from the context menu.
In the wizard, select Browse my computer for driver software.
Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
From the list of device classes, select Universal Serial Bus devices.
The wizard displays WinUsb Device. Select it to load the driver.
If Universal Serial Bus devices does not appear in the list of device classes, then you need to install the driver by using a custom INF.The preceding procedure does not add a device interface GUID for an app (UWP app or Windows desktop app) to access the device. You must add the GUID manually by following this procedure.
Load the driver as described in the preceding procedure.
Generate a device interface GUID for your device, by using a tool such as guidgen.exe.
Find the registry key for the device under this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSB<VID_vvvv&PID_pppp>
Under the Device Parameters key, add a String registry entry named DeviceInterfaceGUID or a Multi-String entry named DeviceInterfaceGUIDs. Set the value to the GUID you generated in step 2.
Disconnect the device from the system and reconnect it to the same physical port.Note If you change the physical port then you must repeat steps 1 through 4.
Writing a custom INF for WinUSB installation
As part of the driver package, you provide an .inf file that installs Winusb.sys as the function driver for the USB device.
The following example .inf file shows WinUSB installation for most USB devices with some modifications, such as changing USB_Install in section names to an appropriate DDInstall value. You should also change the version, manufacturer, and model sections as necessary. For example, provide an appropriate manufacture's name, the name of your signed catalog file, the correct device class, and the vendor identifier (VID) and product identifier (PID) for the device.
Also notice that the setup class is set to 'USBDevice'. Vendors can use the 'USBDevice' setup class for devices that do not belong to another class and are not USB host controllers or hubs.
If you are installing WinUSB as the function driver for one of the functions in a USB composite device, you must provide the hardware ID that is associated with the function, in the INF. You can obtain the hardware ID for the function from the properties of the devnode in Device Manager. The hardware ID string format is 'USBVID_vvvv&PID_pppp'.
The following INF installs WinUSB as the OSR USB FX2 board's function driver on a x64-based system.
Starting in Windows 10, version 1709, the Windows Driver Kit provides InfVerif.exe that you can use to test a driver INF file to make sure there are no syntax issues and the INF file is universal. We recommened that you provide a universal INF. For more information, see Using a Universal INF File.
Only include a ClassInstall32 section in a device INF file to install a new custom device setup class. INF files for devices in an installed class, whether a system-supplied device setup class or a custom class, must not include a ClassInstall32 section.
Except for device-specific values and several issues that are noted in the following list, you can use these sections and directives to install WinUSB for any USB device. These list items describe the Includes and Directives in the preceding .inf file.
USB_Install: The Include and Needs directives in the USB_Install section are required for installing WinUSB. You should not modify these directives.
USB_Install.Services: The Include directive in the USB_Install.Services section includes the system-supplied .inf for WinUSB (WinUSB.inf). This .inf file is installed by the WinUSB co-installer if it isn't already on the target system. The Needs directive specifies the section within WinUSB.inf that contains information required to install Winusb.sys as the device's function driver. You should not modify these directives.Note Because Windows XP doesn't provide WinUSB.inf, the file must either be copied to Windows XP systems by the co-installer, or you should provide a separate decorated section for Windows XP.
USB_Install.HW: This section is the key in the .inf file. It specifies the device interface globally unique identifier (GUID) for your device. The AddReg directive sets the specified interface GUID in a standard registry value. When Winusb.sys is loaded as the device's function driver, it reads the registry value DeviceInterfaceGUIDs key and uses the specified GUID to represent the device interface. You should replace the GUID in this example with one that you create specifically for your device. If the protocols for the device change, create a new device interface GUID.
Note User-mode software must call SetupDiGetClassDevs to enumerate the registered device interfaces that are associated with one of the device interface classes specified under the DeviceInterfaceGUIDs key. SetupDiGetClassDevs returns the device handle for the device that the user-mode software must then pass to the WinUsb_Initialize routine to obtain a WinUSB handle for the device interface. For more info about these routines, see How to Access a USB Device by Using WinUSB Functions.
The following INF installs WinUSB as the OSR USB FX2 board's function driver on a x64-based system. The example shows INF with WDF coinstallers.
USB_Install.CoInstallers: This section, which includes the referenced AddReg and CopyFiles sections, contains data and instructions to install the WinUSB and KMDF co-installers and associate them with the device. Most USB devices can use these sections and directives without modification.
The x86-based and x64-based versions of Windows have separate co-installers.
Note Each co-installer has free and checked versions. Use the free version to install WinUSB on free builds of Windows, including all retail versions. Use the checked version (with the '_chk' suffix) to install WinUSB on checked builds of Windows.
Each time Winusb.sys loads, it registers a device interface that has the device interface classes that are specified in the registry under the DeviceInterfaceGUIDs key.
Note If you use the redistributable WinUSB package for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, make sure that you don't uninstall WinUSB in your uninstall packages. Other USB devices might be using WinUSB, so its binaries must remain in the shared folder.
How to create a driver package that installs Winusb.sys
To use WinUSB as the device's function driver, you create a driver package. The driver package must contain these files:
WinUSB co-installer (Winusbcoinstaller.dll)
KMDF co-installer (WdfcoinstallerXXX.dll)
An .inf file that installs Winusb.sys as the device's function driver. For more information, see Writing an .Inf File for WinUSB Installation.
A signed catalog file for the package. This file is required to install WinUSB on x64 versions of Windows starting with Vista.
Note Make sure that the driver package contents meet these requirements:
The KMDF and WinUSB co-installer files must be obtained from the same version of the Windows Driver Kit (WDK).
The co-installer files must be obtained from the latest version of the WDK, so that the driver supports all the latest Windows releases.
The contents of the driver package must be digitally signed with a Winqual release signature. For more info about how to create and test signed catalog files, see Kernel-Mode Code Signing Walkthrough on the Windows Dev Center - Hardware site.
Download the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) and install it.
Create a driver package folder on the machine that the USB device is connected to. For example, c:UsbDevice.

Copy the KMDF co-installer (WdfcoinstallerXXX.dll) from the WinDDKBuildNumberredistwdf folder to the driver package folder.

This topic is intended for OEMs who want to build a Windows 10 system with USB Type-C connector and want to leverage OS features that allow for faster charging, power delivery, dual role, alternate modes, and error notifications through Billboard devices.
A traditional USB connection uses a cable with a USB A and USB B connector on each end. The USB A connector always plugs in to the host side and the USB B connector connects the function side, which is a device (phone) or peripheral (mouse, keyboard). By using those connectors, you can only connect a host to a function; never a host to another host or a function to another function. The host is the power source provider and the function consumes power from the host.
The traditional configuration limits some scenarios. For example, if a mobile device wants to connect to a peripheral, the device must act as the host and deliver power to the connected device.
The USB Type-C connector, introduced by the USB-IF, defined in the USB 3.1 specification, addresses those limitations. Windows 10 introduces native support for those features.

USB Type-C connector is reversible and symmetric.
The main component are: the USB Type-C connector and its port or PD controller that manages the CC pin logic for the connector. Such systems typically have a dual-role controller that can swap the USB role from host to function. It has Display-Out module that allows video signal to be transmitted over USB. Optionally it can support BC1.2 charger detection.

USB Function driver bring-up is only required if you support USB Function mode. If you previously implemented a USB Function driver for a USB micro-B connector, describe the appropriate connectors as USB Type-C in the ACPI tables for the USB Function driver to continue working.

Updating FloatingGlucose to .NET 5 - Display Nightscout or Dexcom Glucose Values on the Windows Desktop
Last month I learned how to convert a 13 year old .NET app to modern .NET 5 with the "try convert" tool. It was surprisingly easy to bring a "legacy" app well forward to a pretty darn cool self-contained app. That means NO .NET install. Just run an exe and you're set.
I found this 5 year old .NET application called FloatingGlucose from Bjørn that connects to a Nightscout open source diabetes server like the one I use and displays your current glucose values in a floating popup on your Windows desktop. It can also connect to the Dexcom Share servers. However, the app has an installer and requires .NET 4.6 to be installed.
How quickly - and successfully - can I convert it to a self-contained .NET 5 app? I don't know, I haven't written that part of this blog post yet. I'm still up here.
Let's try it.

I started using the GitHub CLI lately and it's great, so I'll clone with it.
NOTE: I'm surprised I can't clone AND get submodules with the GH CLI so I guess I need to git submodule update --init --recursive after the initial use of GH.
And looks like GH is out of date so I'll 'winget install gh' to update it while I'm here.

So I'm going step by step through the process, answering questions. OK, done. Let's see if it builds.
Looks like it doesn't. It has a custom setup PowerShell script that is trying to call InnoSetup and make an installer. Since I want to make a version that doesn't require an installer, I can remove all that from the PostBuildEvent and PreBuildEvent in the main csproj file.
Now I'm getting a number of compiler errors that aren't related to the conversion, but rather a misunderstanding about how exceptions are to be re-thrown.
When you say "throw err" you're actually losing your call stack and context.

Instead, just:

throw to maintain the current error context. I'm just tidying up at this point.
I see a few warnings like:

Interesting, what's this about? Looks like not all of the Windows Forms DataVisualization project came along for .NET 5? The older code is here https://github.com/dotnet/winforms-datavisualization for .NET Core 3. The readme says "We consider the System.Windows.Forms.DataVisualization deprecated and we only provide it to ease porting to .NET Core 3"
However, Angelo Cresta has a .NET 5 version here https://github.com/AngeloCresta/winforms-datavisualization-net5 so I can try updating to his version. I'll bring it in as a Submodule and then add it as a Project Reference from the main FloatingGlucose app.
I'll also bump the JSON.NET reference from 9 to 13.0.1
NOTE: I'll also put in a dotnet_diagnostic.CA1416.severity = none in an .editorconfig to keep the compiler from warning me that this requires Windows 7 and above.
Boom, this 5 year old app is now a .NET 5 app and builds clean. SHIP IT. Well, test and run it first, eh?

And finally, can I make it a single no-install EXE that doesn't even need .NET installed?

Microsoft Offers a “Distraction” with a New Windows 10 Build from the Iron Branch
Microsoft has released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20251 (FE_RELEASE) to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. Today's Insider Preview Build focuses entirely on fixes and improvements and doesn't bring any new features to the Insiders.

We fixed an issue resulting in the background of some dialogs to unexpectedly appear grey instead of white in the last couple flights.
We fixed an issue resulting in the taskbar occluding the Power button in the Start menu for some Insiders recently.
We fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders seeing a SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED bug check.
We fixed a crash with opengl32.dll.
We fixed an issue that could result in the Settings app hanging when checking for updates right after upgrade.
We fixed an issue that could result in the Settings app sending a notification that just said “new notification”.
We fixed an issue resulting in the Search Indexer not being able to retrieve metadata from HEIF and WebP files, so you couldn’t search for those files using metadata like date taken.
We fixed an issue resulting in the Cast to Device option in Movies & TV (and other media playback apps) not taking any action when clicking on a listed device in recent builds.
We fixed an issue in recent builds that could result in the screen you were projecting with Miracast freezing shortly after connecting.
Windows 10 Iron Build 20251: Known issues
We’re working on a fix for an issue starting with Build 20236 where installing games from the Store to a secondary non-OS drive will result in the secondary drive becoming inaccessible. To prevent this from occurring you must change the default storage for new content to the secondary drive PRIOR to installing the game. This can be done in Settings > Storage > Change where new content is saved.
We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build.
Live previews for pinned sites aren’t enabled for all Insiders yet, so you may see a grey window when hovering over the thumbnail in the taskbar. We’re continuing to work on polishing this experience.
We’re working on enabling the new taskbar experience for existing pinned sites. In the meantime, you can unpin the site from the taskbar, remove it from the edge://apps page, and then re-pin the site.
We’re working on a fix for an issue causing some devices to experience a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION bugcheck.
Windows Insiders on ARM PCs such as the Surface Pro X will notice that Windows PowerShell will fail to launch on this build. As a workaround, please use “Windows PowerShell (x86)” or “Windows PowerShell ISE (x86)” from the Start menu if you need to use PowerShell. Or download the new and modern PowerShell 7 which takes advantage of ARM by running natively. Plus the icon is prettier.
We’re investigating reports that some users are seeing error 0x80070426 when using their Microsoft account to sign into various apps. If you encounter it, rebooting your PC may resolve this.

According to sources, Microsoft plans to introduce a design refresh with the 21H2 release, codenamed "Cobalt." This release will happen after the "Iron" release, which is likely to move to the Beta Channel soon and will be released to the public in H1 2021.

Web Developer Workflow Tools: A Beginner’s Guide
Here's a primer for the tools all web developers should get to know, from basic Bash commands to web browser add-ons that will debug your web apps and automate navigation tests, plus continuous integrations pipelines.
Keep in mind this article is intended to cover the tools that the largest number of web developers will share a need to learn, not a comprehensive listing. So don't get too mad if your favorite tool isn't here! (For example, I intentionally left out WYSIWYG website builders 😉.)
Command Line
The command line is an interface that allows you to interact with the operating system through a console, and it can go a very long way to facilitate and even automate tedious and routine tasks.
You shouldn't be afraid of getting your hands dirty with the console. The time you'll spend learning some basic scripting will most definitely pay off.
Bash Tools (Linux, macOS)

Bash is the most popular shell for the "Unix-like" operating systems such as Linux and macOS.
Your mastery — or at the very minimum, a basic knowledge — of the Bash shell can save you a lot of time. Things like locating and renaming files, finding and replacing text strings, can literally take just a few seconds with commands like locate and grep with sed, respectively.
Become proficient in Bash by reading the Bash Quick Start Guide.
PowerShell (Windows)

PowerShell is the "bash-like" task automation and configuration management framework from Microsoft. It comes with a command-line similar to that of the [Command Prompt](https://ift.tt/1GmS2n8 (CMD)), but it also includes modules and a proper scripting language. But keep in mind that scripting is PowerShell in nothing like scripting in Bash. Except for a few exceptions, the commands have entirely different names, meaning that you'll need to learn these separately.
PowerShell 7 (under development) is intended as a successor to PowerShell Core 6, which was introduced as a successor to PowerShell 5. Who knows, folks at Microsoft might figure the naming thing out by version 8 or 9. 🤷‍♂️
Cygwin (also Windows)

You missed the Bash on Windows? Miss it no more! For those of you used to the power of the Bash shell but working regularly on a Windows environment, there's an alternative.
Cygwin is a POSIX-compatible environment that runs natively on Microsoft Windows, where the installation directory behaves like the root and follows a similar directory layout to that found in Unix-like systems.
Code Editors
You almost certainly know what a source-code editor is, but you might not know about some of their power features, such git integration.
There are integrated development environments (IDEs) such as NetBeans and Eclipse — but they're bloated with features we mostly won't care about anyway.
As web developers, we're more inclined towards cross-platform tools. Let's take a look at a few of them.
Atom

Not surprisingly, as it's developed by GitHub, Atom has the finest embedded Git control of any text editor, specifically aimed for GitHub repositories.
But that's not all. The "hackable text editor for the 21st Century" is incredibly easy to customize (see the docs), and a rich packages and themes ecosystem has flourished around it. Be sure to check out the blog and discussion forums to see what's been cooking, as there are plenty of regular updates.
Sublime Text

Sublime Text is the oldest product in this list (it's been around since 2008), and the only one that's not free. It's still very popular, and was the first editor to introduce many of the features we considered a given today in any decent code editor, such as "goto anything", "goto definition", and "multiple selections", among others.
It also has a companion Git client with a very sleek interface, Sublime Merge, introduced in 2018.
Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code (not to be confused with Visual Studio is another very popular code editor right now, which includes power features such as:
IntelliSense, which provides smart completions based on variable types, function definitions, and imported modules.
Inline debugging to analyze coding issues right from within the editor.
Version control with Git commands built-in (learn how to use version control).
Extensions and customization which run in separate processes, ensuring they won't slow down the editor (learn more about extensions).
Cloud integration with Microsoft Azure to deploy and host sites, store and query relational and document based data, and scale with serverless computing.

The Runners Up
Although not so popular, Brackets is worth mentioning, as it’s primarily focused on web development, with a very interesting feature called Live Preview, which gives real-time connection to your browser to instantly visualize changes to CSS and HTML on screen.
Notepad++ is a drop-in replacement for Windows Notepad, very minimalist and lacking some power features we mentioned such as Git integration, but it's still a powerful, lightweight application to edit code.
Command Line–Based
As for commaind line–based editors, you've got Emacs and Vim … and endless flame wars about which one is better!
Browser Tools — Debugging, Debugging, Debugging
The web development tools shipped by some browsers aren’t quite website builders or IDEs, as they neither assist in the direct creation of a web page nor are a replacement for a code editor. Rather, they help to test the user interface (UI) of the project you're working on.
Back in the day, you’d need a number of extensions to make for a decent debugging environment, but nowadays most browsers have great built-in tools to help web developers.
Some tools you can expect to find:
A DOM inspector to edit HTML and CSS code directly on the document object model (DOM), view event listeners, and set DOM mutation breakpoints.
A console to view and filter log messages, inspect JavaScript objects and DOM nodes, and run JavaScript code in the context of the active window or frame.
A debugger to control the execution flow stepping through code, and set watches and breakpoints.
A network monitor to inspect requests and responses from the network and browser cache, including asynchronous XMLHttpRequest (XHR) — all of which can be very useful to identify bottlenecks.
An accessibility inspector to access the page's accessibility (a11y) tree, allowing you to check what's missing or otherwise what needs attention to make your site available to as many people as possible.

Google Chrome comes with a comprehensive and incredibly well-documented set called DevTools.
In fact, it's a good idea to visit Google's Tools for Web Developers, as you’ll find plenty of useful resources.
Firefox Developer Tools

Firefox first introduced the DOM inspector in version 3, and ever since then its Developer Tools are a state-of-the-art set that comes with extra goodies such as Eyedropper, taking screenshots, and rulers, to name a few.
Likewise, the Mozilla Developer Network (MDN) is a mandatory resource for web developers.
Safari Developer Tools

Because of its lack of features and poor support to web developers, Apple Safari is a pain to work with, and, like Internet Explorer back in the day, it would be nice not to have to deal with it. But you just have to.
It does ship Web Development Tools that aren't nearly as comprehensive as the aforementioned ones, and all the documentation you'll get is what someone may have written over a lunch break. (Yes, that's all there is.)

Even Microsoft Edge, the successor of infamous Internet Explorer, has a decent set of Developer Tools!
