Tive medo de o gato o pegar. Levei-o para fora e pus nas suculentas. Fiquei um minutinho ali. Fiz umas fotos. Chamei de Manny, sabem? O louva-a-deus de ‘A Vida de Inseto’? Era meu favorito depois de Gipsy, a mariposa... .

It was after eight at night. Heat in the air. Windows open to cool off. Lights on to brighten. Suddenly a visitor; wings flapping in the air. Around the lamp, an agitated dance. On the floor, a white cat jumping. It was a praying mantis whose blessing came to give.

When it landed in the fridge, such a delicate little animal with such a soft color, I swear I got emotional. It was reactive. I know it was following the pattern of insects, being drawn to light. But there it was, turning its head to the side, seeming to stare at me. An unexpected visit. I was grateful. Silly thing, right?

I was afraid the cat would get it. I took it outside and put it in the succulents. I stayed there for a minute. I took some pictures. I called it Manny, you know? The praying mantis from 'A Bug's Life'? He was my favorite after Gipsy the moth…

So, uh. Parthenogenesis (or, "virgin birth"--female animals having children without ever mating) is recorded in a few mantis species. But...apparently it exists in a few more, too.

See, I had Bo, a shield mantis (Rhombodera megaera), and I know for a fact that she never mated. So, when she made an ooth (egg sac), I assumed it was nonviable and put it in a little jar with rice to desiccate and preserve it.

Recently, though, I checked up on it...

Looking closely, you can see the raptorial claws and the long prothorax, plus the little flat flipped-up abdomen. There's nothing that could be but a baby praying mantis :|

So, then I thought about the other ooths I have. My ghost mantises (two females, Phantasma and Goria) laid tons of ooths all over their sticks, and again, never mated. And sure enough, when I look at one of them now...

See, this was a stick I kept out in the open. And when baby mantises come out of the ooth, they're initially these little larval things called pronymphs that they immediately molt from. On top of that, this is exactly the color and texture the mother had.

This looks like a pronymph shed. So, somewhere in my room, for a little while, there was probably a baby ghost mantis wandering around.

I have never heard of parthenogenesis in either of these species or any other members of their genuses. How common is this?!!

Nobody really knows what's going on in this place - As majority of the residents see it - it's a normal town same as any other.... If you consider creepy mailmen, cannibal mannequins and the like to be normal. Every odd month or so, a new resident is moved into town. If one were to pay close attention, they might assume a new person appears every time anothet dies, but that may not be the case as there have been a few instances of "overpopulation" - meaning one or more residents are without an assigned home. In those situations...well, they'd better pray their neighbor is kind enough to lend them a spot on their couch until another home is vacant or sprouts up.

Death isn't always the end for some of the humans who live here. Reader's next door neighbor happens to be a zombie that died in a particular way that they....don't like to talk about. The town is chalk full of bizarre folks. Some want to live life as humanly as possible - others would rather eat and/or butcher their neighbors.

Every year there is an election for mayor and until Reader arrived the same asshole won every year. Everyone hated that guy - nobody even knows why they counted to vote for him. Reader quickly gains the favor of some pretty important figures around town such as the headless secretary they give a head to and their other neighbor - the weird doll lady who thinks she's a real doll and may or may not be in control of the aforementioned cannibal mannequins who brings her "friends" for her parties.

There's lots of fun people in town like her-

There's a group of slashers who act more like fratbros/kids at a slummer party than anything - alongside more serious killers who probably won't let their prey off the hook no matter how many cans of beer they attempt to bribe them with

I mentioned a praying mantis guy in a suit at one point which I think was originally going to be the secretary at some point - but now he's more like their body guard because it's literally just a giant praying mantis that eats people.

That weird mailperson who sometimes writes X's on peoples mailboxes. It's by pure coincidence the people who live in the house end up dead or missing within a weeks time.

"Frankie" - he's not one of the fun one, actually. Everyone kinda sorta hates Frankie. That asshole...

And many more as I think about what's to come - not to mention all the real "normal" humans who just want to go home.

Shaking your head you tugged at the poncho, your head snapping to Mirrian. You weren’t quite sure you should trust the woman’s smile. “Is something wrong?”

Shrugging her shoulders she then turned her back to you. “Cere wants to see you.”

Dropping your shoulders, you bit back a groan. “I was hoping to take a nap.”

“Trust me, you’ll want to be awake for this.”

Shaking your head you tried to wonder what the hell that meant then again you could never tell with Mirrian.

Rolling your shoulders you glanced around the room spotting Cere talking to some guy you didn’t know but your heart nearly stopped seeing who was talking to Greez.

“Cal?”

BD-1’s beeps seeming to agree as the little robot jumped at your feet. Shaking your head you laughed for a moment stepping close. “I see you haven’t changed Cal” titling your head you then placed your hand on his cheek, him leaning into your palm.

“Well not all of you are the same, I like the beard and the hair is a nice touch.” You teased.

Letting out the breath he was holding in Cal returned your smile though it turned to confusion once it finally hit him. You were wearing his poncho, one he thought he lost. “Is that…Is that my poncho?”

Feeling warmth creep up your neck you adverted your eyes. “Maybe…it’s been helping me….I can give it-”

Shaking his head, Cal quickly grabbed hold of your hands. “You don’t…You don’t need to give it back, I want you to keep it…it looks good on you.”

It was cute, seeing the red envelope the man’s cheeks though you did see his eyes darken. You’re all to familiar with that look.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean.”

Cere sighed as het shoulder’s slumped. “I just pray they stay far away from our work.”

“Is anyone gonna clue me in on what you two are talkin-.” Seeing the look on Cere and Mirrian’s face Greez’s eyes went wide before he let out a laugh, BD-1 jumping on Mirrian’s shoulder. “Well as long as it’s ain’t the Mantis then I’m happy.”

Though it was Mirrian’s turn to let out a bark of laughter.

“Why are you laughing, why is she laughing Cere.”

Cere shrugged turning away. “I am not getting in on this, let me know when they’ve returned.”

“I just find it funny that you think they haven’t fucked on the ship.”

“Wait! What! You must be lyin! Come on Mirrian! Tell me you’re lyin? Stop walking away Mirrian.”

I have this theory that the reason Jan and Nace work so well together and the reason they're so close is because Nace grounds Jan

Like, we all agree that Jan seems to be in his own little world/on another plane of existence most of the time. If you look at him in interviews or anytime he's not onstage he's just....elsewhere. Thinking about music and equations and the worlds you can build with them. He's a genius onstage but when it comes to remembering your keys or the date? Nah.

Whereas Nace seems so...well, adult. He seems like The Responsible One. The older one who takes care of everybody. The one who does in fact remember the keys and the date and remembers to buy and eat vegetables and exercise and get up at a normal time.

And it just really hit me when Jan was talking about his favorite animal in the live (a praying mantis??) and he couldn't remember the English word for it but Nace could. Nace remembered it for him. Because Nace keeps him connected to the "real" world and probably keeps him from walking into things. And it's adorable.
