Personal Injury Pre-Settlement Funding: Is It Right for You?
Tumblr media
Navigating the aftermath of a personal injury can be a daunting experience, both emotionally and financially. While your lawsuit is pending, expenses such as medical bills, rent, and daily living costs continue to accumulate. Pre-settlement funding can offer a financial lifeline during this challenging time. But is it really the proper choice for you? This blog post explores the ins and outs of pre-settlement funding to help you make an informed decision.
What is Pre-Settlement Funding?
Pre-settlement funding, also known as lawsuit funding or legal funding, is a type of cash advance provided to plaintiffs in a pending lawsuit. This funding is designed to help cover immediate expenses while you wait for your case to settle. Unlike a traditional loan, pre-settlement funding is non-recourse, meaning you only repay the advance if you win your case.
How Does Pre-Settlement Funding Work?
Tumblr media
The process of obtaining pre-settlement funding is relatively straightforward:
Application: You apply for funding through a legal funding company, providing details about your case and your attorney's contact information.
Evaluation: The funding company reviews your case to determine its merits and the potential settlement amount.
Approval: If approved, you receive a cash advance based on the estimated value of your settlement.
Repayment: If you win your case, you repay the advance, plus any fees and interest, from your settlement. If you lose, then you owe nothing.
Benefits of Pre-Settlement Funding
Pre-settlement funding offers several advantages that can be particularly beneficial for plaintiffs dealing with financial strain:
Immediate Financial Relief - Access to funds can help cover urgent expenses, preventing financial hardship during the legal process.
Reduced Stress - Knowing you have financial support can alleviate some of the stress associated with waiting for a settlement.
No Risk - Since repayment is contingent on winning your case, there is no financial risk if your lawsuit is unsuccessful.
Potential Drawbacks to Consider
Tumblr media
While pre-settlement funding can be a valuable resource, it's important to weigh the potential drawbacks:
High Fees and Interest: Pre-settlement funding companies often charge high fees and interest rates, which can significantly reduce your final settlement amount.
Impact on Settlement Negotiations: Having access to funds might reduce the urgency to settle quickly, potentially prolonging your case.
Qualification Criteria: Not all cases qualify for pre-settlement funding, and the approval process can be selective.
Is the Pre-Settlement Funding Perfect for You?
Deciding whether pre-settlement funding is right for you involves careful consideration of your unique circumstances. Here are a few questions to help guide your decision:
Do You Have Immediate Financial Needs? If you're struggling to cover essential expenses, pre-settlement funding can provide crucial support.
Can You Afford the Fees? Assess the potential cost of the funding, including fees and interest, and compare it to your anticipated settlement amount.
What is Your Attorney's Opinion? Your attorney can offer valuable insights into whether pre-settlement funding is a prudent choice based on the strength of your case and expected timeline.
Conclusion
Pre-settlement funding can be a lifeline for personal injury plaintiffs facing financial difficulties, offering immediate relief and peace of mind during a challenging time. However, it's essential to carefully weigh the benefits against the potential costs and consider your individual needs and circumstances. Consulting with your attorney and thoroughly researching funding options will help you make an informed decision about whether pre-settlement funding is right for you.

How to Select a Pre-settlement Funding Company: Essential Factors to Consider
Choosing a pre-settlement funding company is an important decision that can significantly impact your financial future. This article aims to guide you through the selection process by highlighting the essential factors to consider when choosing a pre-settlement funding company.
Tumblr media
1. Reputability and Experience
The reputation and experience of a pre-settlement funding company can speak volumes about its credibility and professionalism. Look for a company with a solid track record and positive client testimonials. Companies with significant experience in handling pre-settlement funding are likely to understand the nuances of different types of cases and offer better service.
2. Transparency
Transparency is critical in any financial agreement, and pre-settlement funding is no exception. A reputable funding company should provide clear, easy-to-understand contracts and willingly explain all terms, including fees, interest rates, and repayment obligations. If a company seems unwilling to answer your questions or clarify confusing terms, consider it a red flag.
3. Competitive Rates and Fees
Interest rates and fees associated with pre-settlement funding can significantly impact the final amount you receive from your settlement. Make sure to compare the rates and fees of several funding companies before making a decision. Remember, though, that the lowest rate isn't always the best choice if it comes with less transparency or inferior customer service. But if you are trying to get the lowest cost pre-settlement funding, then ECO is the best company you can opt for.
4. Non-recourse Funding
One of the key advantages of pre-settlement funding is its non-recourse nature, meaning you're not obligated to repay the funds if you lose your case. Ensure that any funding company you consider offers non-recourse funding.
5. Responsiveness and Customer Service
The pre-settlement funding process can be complex and stressful. A company with responsive customer service can make the process smoother and more manageable. Choose a company that is easy to reach, quick to respond, and willing to guide you through the process.
6. Approval Process and Funding Time
Some funding companies can approve your application and provide funds within 24-48 hours, while others may take longer. If you need funds quickly, consider the company's average approval time and funding time.
7. Attorney Involvement
Your attorney plays a crucial role in the pre-settlement funding process. They can provide valuable advice and ensure you fully understand the implications of the funding agreement. A reputable funding company should encourage attorney involvement in the process.
Conclusion
Choosing a pre-settlement funding company is a decision that should be made with careful thought and thorough research. By considering the factors outlined above, you can select a company that best meets your needs and helps you navigate your financial journey during your lawsuit.

Rumor #5 - Per the terms of Diana's will, William inherited her things that were being stored at Althorp when he turned 30. According to Karen Spencer (Earl Spencer's wife), all of Dians's things were taken down from the Althorp displays at William's 30th birthday and given to William. Harry didn't know that and when he approached Charles about having some of Diana's things for Meghan and the new baby, Charles told him William had them and Harry flipped out.
Can you do a deep dive into this, I don't think William inherited it all, I think he took it first because ge turned 30 first and Harry joined him 2 years later, there's a thing about Diana's gowns and both her sons having to approve their display.
What William might've inherited, according to helenaurelia (it's not the same here without her) is Diana's official gifts jewelry (The Saudi Suite, Qatari Suite, The Sapphire chocker, etc) it has been a rumor since the C&D divorce, Kate wore pieces from the personal and official collection while Meghan only wore personal pieces
Old ask from May 9th
First, there's not a whole lot publicly known or published about Diana's will and/or the boys' inheritances. 95% of what's out there is largely speculation and gossip.
So let's get into what we do know first, and then talk some rumors.
Diana wrote her last will on June 1, 1993. In that will, she:
Named her mother, Frances Kydd, and Patrick Jephson named as executors and trustees.
Named Frances Kydd and Earl Spencer as guardians for any children who were underaged at the time of her death.
Requested her husband Charles to consult with Frances on the boys’ education, upbringing, and welfare.
Left the bulk of her estate in a trust for William and Harry, with instructions that they should split it equally on their 25th birthdays. She also had instructions that if the boys predeceased Diana (or died within three months of her death) but they had children and those children survived three months past Diana’s death, they should inherit their father’s share at age 21 and it should be split equally amongst them. Grandchildren of a surviving son do not inherit anything.
Diana’s estate was estimated at $35.6 million pre-tax; $21.3 million after tax. The lion’s share of Diana’s estate (about $28 million pre-tax) came from her divorce settlement.
Diana updated her will on February 1, 1996. In her codicil, she replaced Patrick Jephson as executor and trustee with her sister, Sarah McCorquodale. Everything else remained the same.
After Diana died, Frances and Sarah challenged the will and Diana’s estate in probate court using a variance that changed William’s and Harry’s age of inheritance from 25 to 30; however, William and Harry were allowed to access the income (aka interest) generated by their inheritance beginning at age 25. The full details of Frances and Sarah’s challenge, including why they challenged, and the variance aren’t known.
Frances and Sarah later gave one memento of Diana to each of her 17 godchildren - this becomes important later - and also in accordance with Diana’s wishes, gave Paul Burrell approximately $70,000.
In her will, Diana created a trust or a fund (it’s not clear) to keep and maintain all of Diana’s clothes, including her wedding dress. The clothes, especially the wedding dress, were often lent out to exhibitions all over the world; however, upon Harry’s 30th birthday, everything returned to William and Harry as per the terms of their inheritance. The clothing fund/trust supported William, William’s family, Harry, and several special charities. The charities were also allowed to receive royalties from the commercial use of Diana’s likeness.
Here’s where it gets messy. A few years after Diana’s death and probate was completed, there were unrelated court proceedings in which a previously undisclosed  “Letter of Wishes” from Diana regarding her estate was revealed. The “Letter of Wishes” declared more of Diana’s intent on how to divide her estate:
75% of her personal belongings and all of her jewelry should go to William and Harry.
The remaining 25% of her personal belongings (including portraits, paintings, clothing, and china) should go to an additional 17 named beneficiaries - her godchildren.
The discovery of the letter and Diana’s final wishes for her estate really pissed off a lot of people, family members and godchildren, especially. It’s not clear if people were angry with how Frances and Sarah decided to distribute Diana’s estate, if they were angry at the probate court for not exhausting all efforts to uncover or find all of Diana’s last documents, or if they were angry at whomever held the letter for not coming forward years earlier.
(My theory is that the Letter of Wishes was found in the evidence discovery for the Paul Burrell trial. If you’re not familiar: after Diana died, many of her belongings went missing. There was an investigation, in which it was discovered that Paul Burrell had these items, which ended up being around 310 items, including clothing, shoes, and letters. Burrell was charged with theft, it went to trial in 2002, and The Queen intervened at the last moments by all of a sudden remembering that she had given Burrell permission to remove these items.)
Remember those 17 godchildren? The ones who received just one memento of Diana, which some of them called “tacky”? Had Diana’s Letter of Wishes been declared at the time of her death and followed, the godchildren would have been given about $100,000 each.
As for exactly how Diana’s assets, properties, and belongings were split up, we don’t know. Not a lot has been published or publicly discussed. For instance, the speculation is that William took his half when he turned 30, but it’s also possible that William waited until Harry turned 30 so it was an even split of the assets. (The former is probably most likely; William doesn’t strike me as someone who’d nickel-and-dime in his inheritance and since the brothers were on good terms back in those days, William even may have been happy for Harry to get “more” of DIana’s inheritance knowing that he’s the sole beneficiary for Charles when the time comes.)
We do know that William and Harry have the wedding dress. It’s very likely that whatever this fund is that has Diana’s clothes, they probably serve on the board of directors or are somehow closely involved in the administration of it. It’s said that this fund is the one that maintains and holds Diana clothes for display at Kensington Palace. We also know that the brothers got to take a personal item of Diana’s for their own keeping, and William took the engagement ring and Harry took the watch.
But other than those very few specifics, we only have rumors about how the estate was split. Most of the rumors are about the jewelry:
William inherited the big official jewelry and Harry got the smaller personal jewelry. (Helenaaurellia’s theory)
The jewelry Diana received in official capacity as Princess of Wales was left to a trust benefiting only future Princesses of Wales (aka William’s wife, George’s future wife, George’s son’s future wife, etc.) and the brothers split Diana’s personal jewelry.
All of the Princess of Wales jewelry Diana received (aka the official gifts) actually belongs to The Queen and was given back to Her Majesty on Diana’s death. The Queen then loaned them, or gifted them, to Kate.
Diana put most of her personal jewelry into a trust for future granddaughters, so Charlotte and Lili are the true beneficiaries, with William and Harry the trustees who sometimes choose to let Kate and Meghan wear the pieces.
I lean towards Rumor #2 - it just makes the most sense to me when you remember that Diana was actually a pretty hardcore monarchist and royalist. She just didn’t like Charles and much of what she did, she believed she was doing to protect the monarchy from Charles for William’s sake. So putting her official Princess of Wales jewelry in a trust specifically for The Princess of Wales makes sense to me…except doing so would have created a loophole for Camilla to take possession of the jewelry if/when she married Charles and we know Diana wouldn’t have allowed that in any capacity.
Which makes Rumor #1/Helenaaurellia’s theory the most optimal one. William gets the official pieces as his future wife would be the future Princess of Wales, Harry gets the sentimental, personal pieces.
I think Rumor #3 is plausible, but I find it unlikely. While it is true that royal protocol states any gift received by the royal during the course of official duties belongs to The Crown, any gifts given in celebration of a personal event even if official (like a wedding or a baby’s birth or a christening) remains the property of the royal. Much of Diana’s “big” jewelry was given as wedding gifts on her marriage to Charles, so they would’ve been hers to do with as she saw fit.
Rumor #4 strikes me as very tinhatty. 98% of me thinks it’s complete bunk, but there’s that final 2% niggling at me. And that 2% is Meghan’s 2019 NYC baby shower, when all the decor was pink and she was hinting to everyone that they were having a girl. We know that a girl is easier to merch than a boy and that may be why Meghan was hoping for a daughter, but I can’t let go of an extremely farfetched possibility that having a daughter meant Meghan would’ve gotten something of Diana’s.
Personally, I think we have to wait and see what happens under a King William. Does Queen Catherine continue wearing Princess of Wales's jewelry or does she use the vault? If Kate stops wearing Princess of Wales jewelry, does George's wife wear them or will Charlotte wear them? And if Charlotte wears it, does she wear them while she's Princess Charlotte of Wales or does she wear them (or continue to wear them) when she's The Princess Charlotte?
We only have about 20-30 years to wait.

All about pre settlement lawsuit funding for Jones Act
Maritime workers are out on the high seas most of their work life. They are bound to adhere to a lot of regulations to ensure their safety since they are likely to be met with several risks while being deployed at sea. Keeping mind the safety and well-being of the maritime workers the government has passed the Jones Act to cover and regulate the issues concerning maritime operations and vessels. The Jones Act majorly revolves around regulations governing foreign shipping transactions. However, the act also addresses and implements the responsibilities of the central maritime industry to guarantee the safety of the crew members.
Workers, who are employed at the sea, and in specific, maritime vessels, are ineligible to receive regular compensations when they incur injuries during working hours. Thus, they are pushed to arrange for funds separately when they are met with injuries at the workplace. This is where the Jones Act could be deemed helpful since maritime workers could use the same to claim compensation for their physical injuries.
The law was enacted by the government in the year 1920 and has assisted a significant number of injured maritime workers in receiving rightful compensations since then. But like all lawsuits, the approach to seeking money through the provisions of this act could be time-consuming. This is why it is essential to go with a pre settlement lawsuit funding for Jones Act cases. This funding process is more like a cash advance granted to help with the immediate expenses of an injured maritime worker. The victims would have multiple financial obligations to avail themselves of the necessary medical treatment, run their households, etc. Therefore, a pre settlement lawsuit funding for Jones Act cases could be significantly helpful.
Baric Enterprises is the go-to place when in need of a pre settlement lawsuit funding for Jones Act cases. The company has successfully aided hundreds of injured maritime workers by approving funds without any delay. Thus, reach out to their office today to know more about their services.

The Galaxy Squad Campaign.
Back in September, I posted what I hoped to be the first part of a series in which I blogged about a multiple-game campaign called The Galaxy Squad: a series of inter-connected games all taking place in the same galaxy. The continuous blogging about this series didn’t happen, but the games certainly did! So I’m going to re-cap that series now.
I’ve already talked about our Last Fleet series, so I won’t repeat myself too much, but the biggest piece of that series that we carried forward was the ending: the blowing up of the technology that enabled Faster-Than-Light travel, so as to set up the scene for Starforged. (Last Fleet play-kit)
Tumblr media
Starforged was not a game that I ran, or managed to participate in; this series began a trend where I and another GM handed the reins to each-other every month to give both of us a chance to tackle games that were on our to-play list. We also had a higher rate of sign-ups overall for Galaxy Squad, possibly because Monster Squad ended up being a pretty big hit.
Star-Forged can be played with or without a GM, and presents the characters with Vows that they are expected to work towards to try and complete. In Star-Forged, much of the new galaxy that our players fled to was built, because this game has very good tables for setting generation. The group generated a number of planets with different power-structures, resources and danger levels, and established a number of factions with various shady goals. This included a large corporation that was funding a lot of Forge-Spawn research, as well as a cult called the Oracles of Larissa, which dealt quite a bit with the strange space-magic that certain individuals were able to wield. (Stargazer journaling app)
One of the most important contributions from the Star-Forged game involved the creation of Celadon, a wild and lush planet teeming with dangerous life. The players landed on the planet, took one look, and took off again, which meant that it was perfect for the next game in our line-up: Moth-Light.
Tumblr media
For Moth-Light, we started with the premise that our characters would be the descendants of one of the ships from Last Fleet, crashed into a planet and reverting back to a pre-space-flight level of technology out of necessity. This is because Celadon (called Beacon by its inhabitants) was populated by gigantic, dangerous insects called Moths. We pushed the timeline forward to a point where our players could not remember how they ended up on this planet, and then put them in a precarious situation where their current settlements were in danger. The solution: to search for another, safer place to call home.
In more abstract terms, this means that we used the Promise Pact from Moth-Light, which takes plenty of inspiration from media such as Legend of Korra, Farscape, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Moth-Light’s story and tone can vary drastically, depending on the kind of story we want to tell. When creating this game, I briefly entertained the possibility of playing Scavengers, which would be much grittier and harsher, but the group and story seemed to fit the Promise pact better.
Moth-Light is Forged-in-the-Dark and is a phenomenal game. While it’s FitD, the Pacts provided to the group do a lot to help you determine what kind of concept and tone you’re playing in. The typical action ratings and Stress mechanics are also re-worked in a really interesting way, making them slightly modular so that they can change to reflect the Pact you are working with. I really enjoy the prompts left on character sheets that give you just enough information to start brainstorming what these pieces mean exactly for your character. The designer also has a fantastic set of Google-Sheet play-kits that put my character sheets to shame. You need to check this game out.
Tumblr media
After Moth-Light, our timeline had a little bit of a stop-and-start. One of the games we were originally planning to include in the lineup didn’t turn out to be easily translatable to our method of play, so we pivoted to another game intstead: Wetrunner. Wetrunner is a FATE - powered game that takes place in an oceanic cyperpunk future, and we weren’t sure where it would fit in our current galaxy.
We decided to put it into the timeline before Last Fleet, on one of the planets that was eventually destroyed by a robot uprising. There, we decided that at one point in this planet’s history, climate change and decreasing oceanic wildlife led to a great profit for folks who managed to steal aquatic life from power-hungry billionaires.
In other words, we were a diver-themed Leverage crew stealing fish from Eelon Mollusc.
This is where our Squad took a turn for the wacky. We were donning secret identities, wrestling with former connections to the Calamari mafia, and coming up with elaborate Seahorse-racing schemes to lure in our marks. It was hilarious, it was goofy, and it was a great tone-shift from our previous drama-heavy games. (Wetrunnner play-kit)
Tumblr media
Next up: Scum & Villainy. This is where a lot of the set-up in Starforged really did us a favor. We had a lot folks at this point who were excited about Scum & Villainy, so we ended up running two games on two different days of the week. Both games were set up as bounty-hunting crews on the Cerberus, for reasons that I’ll mention later.
We started by recalling the factions we had created in Starforged and mapping them according to theme and tier. I also ported over some of the planets that had been created in Starforged, and started them out in ways that made sense, giving them levels in Weird, Crime, Wealth and Tech. Then the players created characters, and we added more details to the world based on their interests. (Scum & Villain play-kit)
For group A, this led to an investigation into Obsidian Inc, the shady company introduced in Starforged, where Forge-Spawn research invited plenty of cult-related trade and imperial intrigue. We had one player with a robot character continuing the theme of betrayal, turning on the group in the last scene, leaving us with an open-ended ending hinting towards a future rivalry between her and the rest of the crew.
For group B, we set out on an investigation of a racing circuit that was being fixed against the organizer’s will, with strange artifacts and a very humorous rivalry between the crew’s pilot and an NPC called Flick.
As a game, Scum & Villainy elicited mixed reactions. Some folks really loved the chances to experience a number of dramatic moments and heavy role-play, especially during downtime. Others found the harsh consequences from mixed successes to be a bit jarring, especially since Moth-Light, which uses the same bones, feels much more forgiving. Scum & Villainy is definitely a much closer hack of Blades in the Dark, which is meant to be pretty brutal in dishing out harm and consequences. I know that as a GM, I was expecting the Gambit mechanic to carry much more of the weight than it actually did, and if I run this game in the future, I’ll want to have a much more in-depth talk with my players about how harsh we want the consequences to be.
Tumblr media
Last, but certainly not least, is A Complicated Profession. This is a game about bounty hunters experiencing a career change into cruise ship employees - and this is why we all played as bounty hunters in the previous games. This was a chance for anyone to carry forward a character they had already created into a new setting, and two players did exactly that. Hatchet, our Mystic, took up the mantle of the ship’s janitor, and Kalo, our former pilot, took up the role of the ship’s bouncer. (A Complicated Profession play-kit)
Once again, we were provided with a much-needed change in tone. A Complicated Profession has so much room for light-hearted comedy, and we took it and ran. Our ship is in a weekend-at-Bernie’s situation, with a captain that is totally out of commission but we need to maintain the facade that he’s still alive in order to make sure we can still get paid. We had occasional run-ins with junk pirates, organized birthday parties for alien teenagers, and solved many a problem with a food processor.
A Complicated Profession is another game that can be run without a GM, although in this case we still had one person take the role of a facilitator because a) we had too many people show interest and b) not everyone had access to the book. As you play, characters will slowly let go of pieces of their old lives, and pick up new skills to help them with their new job, including choosing a new name at the end. I have laughed so many times while playing this game and I’m so happy that this is how we decided to tie up the Galaxy Squad series.
After this my friends and I are re-organizing how we play our games, so we might not have a thematic timeline in the same way we did for Monster Squad or Galaxy Squad. But these experiences have taught me some really valuable lessons, the primary one of which is this:
Choosing games to play based on a theme will sometimes point you towards games that you may not have otherwise thought to pick up. Those games may end up being something that you absolutely love. In this case, I was very excited to run Scum & Villainy, but it ended up being the biggest let-down on the list. Meanwhile, I had never heard of A Complicated Profession before my co-GM introduced me to it, and it is now going at the top of my list of recommendations.
If you are in a game group and you have access to a number of different games between you and your friends, taking turns to try out the stuff you are all interested in will introduce you to so many games, and while not everything will be a hit, you’ll learn a lot about what you like, and you may find your next favourite game. So try stuff!!

WHAT HAPPENS IN HALO: OUTCASTS, ZITA?
Hot damn, I haven't done one of these in a while.
Let me get this written down for you while it's still fresh...
(As usual: I cannot guarantee I present events that are happening in the same time in different places in the order the book does, but I do promise the gist of the thing)
Tumblr media
Outcasts happens in November of 2559, which is after the destruction of Doisac and before the events of Halo Infinite begin.
Cortana's forces are occupying Sanghelios and attempting to police the population, which makes the Arbiter's position suck out loud: he can't directly confront Cortana without winding up in the same position as Atriox with Doisac. The Sangheili have been trying to figure out what to do without Cortana finding out about any of their plans.
There are also some humans on Sanghelios, among them Spartan Olympia Vale. Vale has become a personal friend to the Arbiter in addition to an important diplomatic contact. (She is pre-emptively sad about how bad it's gonna turn out once the Arbiter finds out the extent to which ONI has fucked him over over the years, but also: Thel actually knows more than she thinks he does and that's kind of fun.)
Anyway.
After a very tense traffic stop by some of Cortana's troops on his way back from a big important Kaidon meeting (this is the part that N'tho 'Sraom and Usze 'Taham are around for), Thel has a vistor: an Oath Warden named Crei 'Ayomuu. Oath Wardens are hired guns who enforce contracts, either by scaring the noncompliant party into following through on their end, or by bringing back their head. This is considered highly dishonorable work and nobody likes Oath Wardens. Thel is not a fan either.
'Ayomuu, however, is here because he has some important information about the contract he is pursuing: a human xenoarchaeologist (Keely Iyuska) who specializes in pre-Forerunner civilizations (or, you know, what trace scraps of those exist) agreed, in exchange for funding, to give 'Ayomuu's client first pick of whatever she finds on a planet the Sangheili call N'ba.
To make a long story short, N'ba is what we would remember as Netherop from Halo: Oblivion. It is a miserable desert world that did have evidence of weird alien technology, but nothing too earth-shattering.
...But the evidence also suggests something far, far more important might be on Netherop: A weapon. A powerful, ancient weapon that once was used to kill a Guardian.
It is, obviously, very important that this not fall into the wrong hands. Cortana is also actively hunting for this human, and Cortana's hands would absolutely be the wrong ones.
It's time to get over working with an Oath Warden and get on the case.
Meanwhile, Vale is also finding out about this elsewhere. She's hearing it straight from the horse's mouth, because Iyuska is an old university acquaintance and is reaching out to Vale for help because ONI may be in fucking shambles after Cortana destroyed Bravo-6, but there are enough pieces still working and she knows Vale still has contacts. And they prrrrooooobably should not let Iyuska's client (or anyone) get their hands on this thing she is pretty sure she's discovered.
Vale agrees, and they set off to the one planet you know makes it a Troy Denning Halo novel: Gao.
In Oblivion the UNSC found a pack of feral children (the descendents of space pirates) on Netherop and those children wound up founding a settlement somewhere in the jungle on Gao. Vale wants to find someone who has been to Netherop before to advise on this mission. She and Iyuska make their way in by pretending to be medical researchers investigating a new prion disease that is infecting people on Gao. (That part is happening on Gao, by the way.) The cover falls apart pretty quick because the locals are deeply suspicious and because Vale is.... a Spartan-IV out of armor, and that shit is kind of obvious.
Luckily things don't turn to violence, though, because they are broken up by Rosa Fuertes. This is the character we knew in Oblivion as local Netherop feral youth leader Roselle. (She changed her name to try to avoid ONI tracking her or something and... honey... you are gonna have to try a lot harder than that.) She was like 20 in Oblivion so now she's like 50, and is herself wasting away from the prion disease. She agrees to go with Vale and Iyuska to help with whatever they're doing, but on the condition that ONI continues to leave her family the fuck alone.
Meanwhile, the Arbiter has snuck off Sanghelios (leaving his most trusted guys to cover for him and pretend he's home for as long as possible to throw Cortana's surveillance off the scent) and gone to Netherop. He has some help from two kaidons for this endeavor: 'Talot and Varo'dai. 'Talot is an old ally of 'Vadam and pretty traditional. Varo'dai is a lot more interesting: She (yes she) originally came from Saepon'kal.
This is some Shit No One Remembers Halo lore, so here's the tl;dr: The first time we ever heard of a NOVA bomb (you know, a planet cracker) was the time in First Strike where Admiral Whitcomb left one as bait for the Covenant to find. The Covenant, not knowing what it was, took it back with them to a fleet rally point. In Ghosts of Onyx, a Huragok accidentally set the bomb off by poking at it to trying to figure it out. This blew up most of that particular Covenant fleet, and there was much rejoicing.
...The planet this happened over was the Sangheili colony world of Saepon'kal. The damage from that big of an explosion shattered the moon and soon enough rendered the surface of the planet uninhabitable.
Varo'dai is kaidon of a new colony world, because she was instrumental to saving tens of thousands of Sangheili. She's a very cool character concept, I kinda wish we saw more of her, but by god if you want an excuse to think about cool Sangheili women you've got her and her handpicked all-female rangers who turn out to be some of the most competent people in the book. (Again, don't get your hopes up too much, they're just kinda there as set dressing. Varo'dai gets to be cool occasionally, but her rangers are the most characterless side characters and please do not buy this book just for the lacroix water flavor of Sangheili women being cool. I just... feel compelled to point out that this is the closest we are probably ever gonna get to Sangheili lesbians.)
Honestly, she's mostly there so we have an excuse to see the Arbiter tell off 'Talot for not treating her with respect because Thel 'Vadam confirmed feminist king.
The Arbiter's party makes it down onto Netherop first and encounters.... another returning Oblivion character: Lieutenant Commander Petrov.
Petrov and a handful of her soldiers were marooned on Netherop at the end of Oblivion because Roselle sabotaged her in order to ensure that Roselle and her gang of feral youths would get to leave the planet instead.
Petrov has, over the last thirty years, made this situation completely fucking insane and on the one hand it's so stupid that my disbelief can't handle it, but on the other hand it's kind of amazing? Petrov's people have continued to fight the war with the Covenant, but on Netherop "the Covenant" is just a literal handful of Sangheili holed up in the tel (ruins of an ancient alien underground city) with the ancient alien superweapon and an apparently infinite supply of food.
That's not the insane part.
The insane part is that the humans had a shit ton of kids expressly for the purpose of "making more soldiers" to fight the Covenant with.
And we thought the Spartan program was fucked up...
Thel manages to prevent his allies and Petrov's weird little unit/family from trying to kill one another and does enough diplomacy with Petrov to be on rough speaking terms.
...Meanwhile Vale, Iyuska, Rosa, and a shit ton of ODSTs try to insert onto Netherop. Most of the ODSTs are killed when their dropships are exploded by a MYSTERIOUS ALIEN SLIPSPACE DEATH BEAM, but the Owl with Vale and friends aboard is built for stealth so it manages to survive landing.
Vale doesn't expect the Arbiter to agree with her about what they're doing here, but he is an honorable man and figures if the UNSC finds the MYSTERIOUS ALIEN SLIPSPACE DEATH BEAM first he will, as a man of honor, let them have claim to it. But also, he's gonna do his damnedest.
Thel and his gang of fellow Sangheili have an advantage because the marooned Sangheili aren't automatically hostile to them, so they go in the obvious way while Vale and friends and ODSTs find a way to dig into the underground city instead.
The marooned Sangheili believe that this is the sanctum of the gods and Nizat 'Kvarosee, their leader, is the most strong of faith so he is the best at weilding the super weapon and used it to destroy those ENEMY HUMAN SHIPS.
Thel's team and Vale's team make their way through the tel, fighting the marooned Sangheili (Thel manages to recruit the former Silent Shadow Ra'ashai to his side, 'Talot and his warriors die) and investigating how the hell this place works. Iyuska determines that the whole place seems to run on extremely advanced nanotechnology, which the marooned Sangheili have become very attuned to (shown by how the place adapts to their desires and needs, creating food they can eat and clothing them and of course giving them control over the MYSTERIOUS ALIEN SLIPSPACE DEATH BEAM.)
Rosa gets separated from everyone (originally because the marooned Sangheili captured her) and has a weird moment with some mysterious voices that call themselve The Nothing and insist that she cannot tell anyone they exist, ever. As a prize for this, she wins having her prion disease magically cured somehow.
(Yeah, it's weird, I don't know either.)
Also, while all of this is going on, Atriox is in space overhead. The book thinks it's slick about Atriox secretly being the one who funded Iyuska's research, but it kind of plays that hand too strongly so you know it's Atriox and it's not a surprise. While the ground team is working on securing the weapon, Atriox is attacking everybody's ships. Nobody downstairs finds out for a long while due to comms blackout.
Thel and Vale's teams finally wrest control of the MYSTERIOUS ALIEN SLIPSPACE DEATH BEAM from the marooned Sangheili and one of them ('Kvarosee's lackey Tam 'Lakosee, did I mention he was also in this one?) shows Thel how to use it just in time for them all to figure out holy shit, the Banished are attacking! The beam detects what you think of as your "enemies" and smites them, basically, so Thel worries about whether his mixed feelings about human involvement here might imperil the human ship.
He shouldn't have worried about it. Thel zeroes in on the Banished and a Forerunner ship he knows is going to report to Cortana. 'Lakosee is horrified that he is attacking a SACRED FORERUNNER SHIP, and grabs for the controls in retaliation. End result: EVERYBODY'S big spaceships get blown up: human, Sangheili, and Banished.
Everyone is fucked, they have a matter of hours until Cortana's forces arrive and Banished insertion craft that weren't destroyed are already on the way down. The gang debate about what to do with 'Kvarosee and 'Lakosee, who are both in rough shape. When they refuse to re-integrate with the Sangheili because they believe that Thel and his entourage are clearly godless apostates, Thel and aforesaid entourage leave them to rot.
Iyuska disassembles the MYSTERIOUS ALIEN SLIPSPACE DEATH BEAM, which is unfortunate timing because that really would've helped with all these Banished.
They have to go out and meet/probably fight the Banished, and also figure out what the fuck to do with this superweapon. Thel kinda hates it and Varo'dai's suggestion of the humans and Sangheili each taking one of the two important pieces (a sample of self-propagating nanomachines, and the focusing lens) might be a good idea, but he is a man of his word: the humans did reach the weapon's chamber first when they were fighting their way in, so he will let them have it. Vale, despite it all, is genuinely surprised but okay sure.
....But then Vale gets an idea.
What if they just... give the Banished the weapon? The weapon seems to have pretty much destroyed Netherop's own civilization by being used here, and it would be difficult to impossible to set it up usefully as an offensive weapon. Give Atriox what he wants, and maybe everyone will be able to get off the planet.
(Because it turns out: there are some UNSC slipspace-capable craft that also survived the MYSTERIOUS ALIEN SLIPSPACE DEATH BEAM so it's fine.)
They parley with Atriox, blah blah blah shock and betrayal it turns out that Atriox was secretly employing 'Ayomuu through Atriox's Sangheili lackey this whole time yadda yadda, Atriox ends up leaving with space dust and a focusing lens he probably can't use but he hasn't figured that out yet, at least everyone gets to go home. (???) The most important thing here is that Rosa and Petrov have A Moment to resolve the fact that Rosa caused Petrov to be marooned. Petrov forgives her.
(There's also a chapter of how fucking bad Sloan is doing, you remember Sloan? AI? Meridian? Fenris Dragon Age voice? Anyway, he joined the Created in the hopes of integrating with the Domain and surviving Rampancy, but something about that... doesn't really work with his architecture. He's looping badly, and kind of AI dying. But not yet, not quite yet...)
A lot more stuff happens and there's lots of details scattered through here (some are fun, some are dumb, you know, it's Halo). It 100% does not advance the main universe plot at all, and what the fuck are the Nothing????
But... it was nice to see our guy Thel 'Vadam.
