One Dress a Day - bonus challenges
Multicoloured August The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency - Precious Ramotswe (Jill Scott)
Precious wears a lot of traditional Zimbabwean garments in some amazing fabrics. I’ve always liked this brown and teal dress, but I had to include this green and blue number as well! The cut is very simple, but they look very cool to wear, and they’re so pretty.

Which British author wrote "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series of books?
Tumblr media
"The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" is a series of novels by the British author Alexander McCall Smith. The series began in 1998, and by 2021 there have been 22 novels. The stories are set in Botswana where the main character Mma Precious Ramotswe established a detective agency using the inheritance money from her father. In each book, Mma Precious Ramotswe has a new mystery or crime to solve, but the stories focus just as much on her life, adventures, and the foibles of other characters.
Alexander McCall Smith was born in 1948 and raised by his British parents in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). After working as a Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh, McCall Smith became a fiction writer, starting with children's novels before moving on to "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". He has since written several series of books, such as the "44 Scotland Street" series (2005-present), "The Sunday Philosophy Club" series (2004-present), and the "Professor Dr von Igelfeld Entertainments" series (1997-present).
In 2004, McCall Smith published the sixth book in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", which won him the Author of the Year award at the "British Book Awards". Later that year, McCall Smith began dramatising the series for radio, which ran until 2019. The first book was filmed for television in 2008, starring American actress Jill Scott (born 1972) as the main character.

Title: "Tea Time for Traditionally Built" - Cozy Comfort with a Dash of Slow
Author: Alexander McCall Smith
Genre: Mystery, Contemporary Fiction
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
Review:
Alright, so "Tea Time for Traditionally Built" by Alexander McCall Smith is like that playlist you put on when you're in the mood for chill vibes. It's basically a warm hug in book form, but like with any vibe, there are a few ups and downs. Let's break it down, shall we?
On the plus side, the characters are the real stars of this show. Mma Precious Ramotswe is like that wise friend who always has the tea on life. She's out there solving mysteries with her crew, and it's like you're right there with them, working out the puzzles together. The Botswana setting adds some major aesthetic points too – it's basically like taking a virtual vacation.
Now, about those mysteries. They're not exactly edge-of-your-seat thrillers, but more like a crossword puzzle you tackle on a lazy Sunday. It's all about that low-key satisfaction when things start to come together. The ending wraps things up like a cozy blanket, leaving you with a sense of closure.
But, let's be real, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. The pacing? Well, it moves slower than your grandma trying to figure out Snapchat. 🐌 There were moments when I caught myself daydreaming and checking Instagram – not gonna lie. Also, as much as I love the characters, they're not exactly deep like a TikTok dance challenge. You're not gonna be pondering their complex motivations, that's for sure.
And that ending, while satisfying, might leave you wanting just a smidge more excitement. It's like when your favorite meme format gets overused – still good, but not as fresh.
So, here's the deal. "Tea Time for Traditionally Built" is like comfort food for your brain. If you're down for a slow-burn mystery that's all about the chill vibes, this is your jam. Picture yourself with a cup of tea (how fitting) and enjoy the cozy ride, just remember to bring a little patience with you. 📚✌️

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, by Alexander Mcall Smith
This one has been on my list for a while. I'm glad that I finally got to it.
Set in Botswana, Africa, the book stars Precious Ramotswe a woman in her thirties who after her beloved father died, starts a detective agency, she is the only lady detective in the contryand she takes cases of all types. She is a smart, good natured woman, but also no nonsense and doesn't shy away from telling anyone, even her clients hard truths, though she will do it nicely if the situation calls for it.
The book not only follows cases, but also tells the story of her upbringing with her doting father and a cousin who helped raise her after her mother died. We follow her though her first romantic relationship and what came after, all leading to the opening of the agency and her first steps, an missteps as a detective.
This book reminds me of both Mr. Midshipman Hornblower and the best of Agatha Christie.
It reminds me of Hornblower because the book is very episodic, a lot of chapters are stories unto themselves, but are held together by a couple of plot threads.
I feel like this is a great way to really get to know the main character, watch them grow, watch how each adventure, no mater how small, shapes their skill. And this is very much how Mma Ramotswe develops. Over the course of the book.
I love how Botswana is a character itself, and how it is so lovingly described.
The writing as a different cadence then anything I have ever read. The story isn't in a rush to get where it's going, but it doesn't feel slow. Occasionally things will stop and a view will be be described, or Mma Ramotswe will muse on something not related to anything going on. In another book, this might feel like padding, but in this, it just feels natural.
I really enjoyed this one.

Unlocking the Enigma: Dive into the World of Favorite Mystery Novels
Introduction:
Mystery novels have always captivated readers with their intriguing plots, suspenseful narratives, and enigmatic characters. From classic detective stories to modern thrillers, the genre has left an indelible mark on the literary world. In this article, we explore a selection of favourite mystery novels that have stood the test of time, drawing readers into a labyrinth of suspense, puzzle-solving, and unexpected twists.
I. The Golden Age Mysteries: Unraveling Classic Whodunits
The Golden Age of mystery novels, roughly spanning the 1920s to 1940s, marked the emergence of iconic detective characters and intricate plotlines. Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" (1934) introduced readers to the brilliant Hercule Poirot, who faces a perplexing murder aboard a luxurious train. Similarly, Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1902) sees Sherlock Holmes untangling a web of supernatural occurrences in the eerie moors of Devonshire. These timeless classics continue to bewitch readers with their meticulous detective work and unexpected denouements.
II. Psychological Thrillers: Unsettling the Mind
In the realm of psychological mysteries, Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" (2012) reigns supreme. This modern masterpiece delves into the dark complexities of a troubled marriage, weaving a tale of manipulation, deceit, and shifting perspectives. Flynn's intricate plotting and unreliable narrators keep readers on edge, questioning the truth until the final pages. Another notable entry is Dennis Lehane's "Shutter Island" (2003), where a U.S. Marshal investigates a disappearance on a secluded asylum island, only to confront his own sanity. These gripping psychological thrillers probe the depths of the human psyche, leaving readers enthralled and haunted.
III. International Intrigue: Uncovering Global Secrets
Transporting readers across continents, international mysteries offer a taste of different cultures and a global perspective. Steig Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2005) introduces Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant hacker embroiled in a complex investigation that unravels dark family secrets. Set against the backdrop of Sweden, this novel combines suspense, social commentary, and unforgettable characters. In Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" (1980), a Franciscan friar investigates a series of murders in a medieval Italian abbey, revealing political and religious conspiracies. These international mysteries offer readers a passport to thrilling adventures in unfamiliar territories.
IV. Cozy Mysteries: Embracing Quaint Whodunits
For readers seeking a lighter and more charming mystery experience, cozy mysteries provide the perfect escape. Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple" series, featuring the sharp-witted elderly sleuth, delights readers with quaint English village settings and clever observations. Titles such as "The Murder at the Vicarage" (1930) showcase Christie's knack for intricate plots wrapped in a cozy atmosphere. In Alexander McCall Smith's "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" (1998), readers are transported to Botswana, where the delightful protagonist, Precious Ramotswe, solves crimes with wit and compassion. These cozy mysteries offer a comforting and engaging reading experience.
Conclusion:
Mystery novels have a unique ability to enthrall readers, offering them the chance to become detectives themselves, piecing together clues and solving puzzles. From the classic whodunits of the Golden Age to the mind-bending psychological thrillers of the present day, the mystery genre continues to evolve and captivate. Whether you enjoy intricate unravelling plots with iconic detectives, delving into the depths of the human mind, exploring international intrigue, or embracing cozy and charming tales, the world of mystery novels holds a treasure trove of captivating stories waiting to be discovered. So, grab a magnifying glass, turn the pages, and embark on an unforgettable journey into the realm of mystery.

#No 1 ladies detective agency series
Like many things Mma Ramotswe might say, they may sound right, but when you look at them closely they can be a bit ambiguous. That's right, it's a very puzzling quote. It suits Mma Ramotswe's character because she's of the sunny disposition and she takes a very positive view of life, so I would've thought that if anybody's going to walk in the sunshine it's Mma Precious Ramotswe.Īt one point in the book Mma Ramotswe says it's not important which tree you sit under, as long as you sit under the right tree. Then eventually we decided that 'in the sunshine', or 'in sunshine' was the best thing for that. I think I started off this title thinking of saying 'the woman who walked somewhere' and I didn't have a particular destination for her. Sheryl MacKay: Why is this book called The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine?Īlexander McCall Smith:Titles often have a rather interesting past in that they go through various forms and they can change quite dramatically. and Canada to promote his latest book in the series. 7, in between McCall Smith's tour of the U.S. He sat down with North by Northwest host Sheryl MacKay and some listeners at Barbaro-Jo's Books to Cooks in Vancouver on Nov. McCall Smith himself grew up in southern Africa - he was born in what was then the British Colony of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and later moved to Scotland to study law.
#No 1 ladies detective agency series
He is arguably best known for his best-selling series The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, which follows the adventures of Mma Precious Ramotswe, who has founded an agency in Gabarone, the capital of Botswana. The Scottish author and retired professor of medical law has written everything from academic texts and children's books to short stories composed entirely on Twitter. Alexander McCall Smith is a very prolific writer.

I've already read the second installment in this series, Tears of the Giraffe, and there is no doubt in my mind now that these books are destined to become classics. The writing is just so simple and beautiful and I found myself thinking about this book long after I finished it. With persistent observation, gentle intuition, and a keen desire to help people with the problems. It's technically classified as a mystery because the heroine, 30ish Precious Ramotswe, operates Botswana's first female-owned detective agency, The Ladies No. I absolutely loved, loved, loved this book.

"It's certainly not in keeping with the overwhelming majority of the rest of the incidents in the series of books," he says. The first installment, in fact, features a dark storyline about witchcraft - something McCall Smith says he regrets now, with 10 No. He trained as a lawyer, and ended up in Botswana helping to create its first law school.īut for all the writer's law-and-order background, the series turns out to be less about solving crime and more about solving people's problems - which are often fairy-tale-like mysteries. McCall Smith was born and grew up in what is now Zimbabwe, neighbor to Botswana. She's fairly typical of many people whom you meet in that part of the world." "She's a very intelligent woman, she's kind, she's forgiving - she's just the sort of person you'd like to sit down and have a cup of tea with. "Well, she's a woman of great intuitive ability," McCall Smith says of Ramotswe. "It was amazing to me that an entire culture of people could be so generous with their energy and spirit." "I kept meeting women who were sweet - just genuinely sweet and smart," she says. Scott says she discovered a strong sense of the character while filming in Botswana. "But there's another thing that she has - she tries to achieve some sort of resolution between people, which may mean actually forgiving somebody." "She does have a very strong sense of justice and what is right," McCall Smith explains.
