A New Friend
It was another busy day in the daycare. It was rarely anything else. The second there were multiple children on the floor there was screaming and bright laughter. And Sun wouldn’t have it any other way. It was a good thing the animatronics didn't need to breathe, or he'd never catch his breath.
They wanted to play everything all at once. What a wonderful game that was! Though it got a little messy when one of the kids found the finger paint. At least it cleaned up easily! Or well, mostly. It made for a very exciting morning!
Before lunchtime, Sun greeted a new little child at the stairs. A little one that clung to their mother’s pant leg, afraid of joining the others.
“Ho ho ho! Who do we have here?” Asked Sun as he knelt down to be closer to their height. Long limbs at least meant it was easier to get smaller as he tried not to look scary or loom over the child. “Are you ready to come play with me?”
Looking up at Sun, their eyes went wide. Opening their mouth to speak, nothing came out at first. Staring in awe at the giant for a moment longer, they suddenly ducked behind their mother’s legs, pressing their face tightly against her.
Sun laughed gently, moving to sit down instead. “I know I can be kinda scary, huh? Is it because I’m so big?” He asked. No answer, but that didn’t stop him from trying. “I’m so big so I can pick you up high! And catch you if you fall.”
That was enough that they peeked curiously around their mother to watch the animatronic again. Their hands were tightly bunched onto the fabric of her pants, but they looked and that was all Sun needed!
When they did, Sun giggled and his rays spun happily around his head. “Hello, again! My name’s Sun! What’s your name?”
They mumbled something, but Sun wasn’t sure if it was a name or even a word as they looked at their feet. That was alright, everything was neatly stored in files, but if they didn’t want to tell him, they didn’t have to! He wouldn't use it either. Taking care of children meant making them comfortable. They could tell him their name when they were ready! Friends didn’t always need names!
“It’s wonderful to meet you, Sunshine!” Sun extended a large hand to them. “Do you want to come play with me and the others?”
Watching Sun a bit longer, they looked up to their mother for support. When she nodded, they slowly reached out to put their much smaller hand into Sun’s. Sun could feel their hand shaking, as he wrapped his larger one around it. They just needed some time.
“Great! We’re going to have the best time! We’re doing crafts right now, we can make puppets! I have glitter glue and googly eyes!” Carefully, Sun pulled himself to his feet without letting go of the tiny hand. Waving off the child’s mother, he guided them down to the others to play.
And just like that, Sun had a new friend. Once they warmed up to Sun, he had his own little limpet. All it took was offering a hand and a smile. Wherever he went his new friend would follow. They sat next to him to make puppets together. While Sun’s was mostly scribbles and glitter with eyes that wouldn’t stay in place, they carefully cut out large orange triangles and put them all around the paper bag puppet. Sun beamed proudly, his own triangle rays spinning that they were already opening up.
And while Sun had to be extra careful about where and how he stepped, it suited him just fine. He had a little helper, and they looked like they were having the best day ever. Things were how they should be! After crafts, they helped him put everything away. Or mostly, they made piles for Sun, they couldn’t reach the shelves to put things away. But it was still nice that someone wanted to stay behind and help clean up every once and a while. It was good for children to learn responsibilities.
Watching over the children, Sun spent time to make sure that his newest charge was still playing with the others too. Lifting them high up and onto the bridge while they were chasing each other. There was bright laughter, and crying out that Sun wasn’t playing fair was a joy to hear as they dashed off into the jungle gym. They weren’t gone from him long, but that was alright. So long as everyone was having fun, Sun was a very happy robot. And he was always happy to see them again as they rushed over to cling to his leg in excitement before being rushed off for another game of chase!
Even come lunchtime he had a very good little helper. While Sun carried cans of Fizzy Faz balanced on pizza boxes, his new little friend carried paper plates and made sure everyone had a plate and a place to sit. Going as far as taking a little girl’s hand and walking her to the snack table while happily explaining that it was ‘pizza with Sun time!’ In a cheery voice. Enough that she giggled as she sat down at the smaller child’s request.
Making sure everyone had enough, Sun sat down by his new best friend to make sure they ate too. When he was presented with a plate and one of the child’s slices of pizza, he paused a moment, rays spinning. He’d been asked about having a slice before. But this was the first time a child had thought to give them a slice of their own lunch before. Giggling, he shook his head and gently pushed it back into their little hands. When they looked hurt, he explained.
“Thank you, sunshine! But that’s your snack. You need to eat it all up so you have energy to play!” That still wasn’t enough. If Sun could have smiled wider, he thought his faceplate would crack in half. “Besides, I can’t eat!” He tapped on his smiling teeth for effect. “All these teeth, but my mouth doesn’t open.”
It took a long moment of watching his mouth before they were satisfied enough to dig into their own lunch.
Giving his friend a pat, Sun pulled himself up to his feet to check on everyone else. Just because he had a new friend didn’t mean he could let anyone else feel lonely. Speaking of friends, another voice echoed in his head as he walked and praised children for eating.
“They’re very fond of you,” murmured Moon between them.
Sun giggled and nodded, seemingly to himself. “They are!” Keeping his voice low so as not to interrupt the children, Sun kept going. “They’re very friendly! No one’s offered to share food with me before! I was worried when they hid behind their mama, but they really brightened up. Just needed a little encouragement.”
“You’re always good with the nervous ones. Hopefully, he’ll be alright come naptime.”
That gave Sun pause, and his rays spun as he thought, sinking into his head slightly with worry. They might be nervous when he’s gone. He hadn’t thought about that. But, ever the optimist, “I’m sure they’ll be fine. They’ll see how nice you are and go straight to sleep I bet!”
There was a huff between them, but Sun ignored it. Everything would work out, it always did. Somehow.
With pizza out of the way, it was Moon’s time to shine.
“Alright, everyone! Let’s clean up our plates so Moon can read you a story for naptime!” Chimed Sun. Most of the children ran off to get some last minute playing in before lights out, but his new friend and a few others stayed to help. “Thank you, guys!” Praised Sun as they threw away empty plates and cups. Only a few bites of crust remained. Full bellies meant easier naps, something both he and Moon were grateful for.
When everything was cleaned up, Sun walked over to the lights. “Alright, it’s naptime everyone!” He called to try and get at least some of the children out of the equipment for Moon. Hand on the button, he looked down to see his friend looking nervous as they tugged on his pants. Someone new was scary. Sun knelt down to put a hand gently on their head.
“It’s alright, friendo! It’s time to relax with my best friend, Moon. He’s going to take care of you and everyone for a while, okay?”
Which led to tears in the corner of their little eyes. Did that mean Sun was leaving? That wasn’t okay.
“Oh, no no!” Letting go of the light, he wrapped his arms around the child and hugged them tightly. “It’s alright, I promise. Moon will take good care of you, read you stories and tuck you in. Then, when the lights come back, we can play again, okay?” Not helping they were starting to sniffle. Sun’s shoulders slumped, they were going to have a meltdown if he didn’t think of something! Lifting them up, Sun cradled the child to his chest and soothed over their back.
“You know, taking care of everyone can be a lot of work,” he said after a moment. Sun waited until they looked up at him. Tilting his head just a little he ducked his head closer to whisper. “Sometimes it’s hard for Moon to make sure everyone has blankets and pillows.” Not a total lie, though Moon still sulked to hear it. “Can you help him get everyone blankets for me? I have to go away when he comes out. I’d be really grateful if you could help my other friend like you do for me.”
Leaning against Sun, they thought about it for a moment. That was a lot to put on a little kid! Even if they had been helping a lot on their own. After a bit of thought, they looked up at Sun and nodded with a wide smile. If it meant helping Sun, then it was the best thing, obviously!
Sun cheered quietly and giggled as his rays spun around again. “Wonderful, friend! Thank you very much!” Still holding his new friend, Sun pressed the button and turned off the lights.
Moon blinked a few times, adjusting to fronting. Looking down, he wished he could move his face to give the child a more comforting smile. “Hello,” he whispered with a rasp. “Sun told me I had a new friend to help me get ready for nap time. Would that be you?” He asked, gently tapping the child’s nose, and silently chuckled when they went cross eyed trying to see even in the dark.
It took a moment to adjust to the dark. But when they could see again, they were greeted by someone new! How strange. At the question, they smiled and nodded vigorously and giggled when Moon laughed.
“Thank you, little one.” Setting them down, Moon offered them his hand, much like Sun had done before. Little hand in his, Moon guided them off to the nap area. “Let’s start by making sure everyone’s here so we can get them blankets and pillows, alright?”
With a determined little face, they were off. Tugging kids over to the nap area while Moon laid out the sleep mats for everyone. It was a busier day, so it took him a while to make sure everyone fit, but he would manage, he always did.
It took very little prompting on Moon’s part, all of the other kids were on their mats in almost no time at all. “Good job, starshine,” he whispered as he made sure everyone was comfortable. Having a helper wasn’t so bad, Moon thought as he picked a storybook from the shelf.
Sitting down to start reading, Moon was surprised to find his lap suddenly full with an affectionate child looking up at him expectantly. Looking down, his little helper had come to sit with him. Laughing softly, he shook his head. “Won’t you sleep better with a pillow and blanket, starlight?”
They shook their head and curled closer, grabbing onto him as much as they could. Before he could remove them, Sun was scolding him.
“They’re comfortable, at least let them stay until they’re asleep.”
“It’s not fair to the other children, Sunny. We can’t play favourites,” he reminded his counterpart who just pouted.
“Just until they fall asleep,” Sun tried again, pleading with his friend. “They like you too. And it’s your job to make sure everyone feels safe, right?” Tried Sun.
Moon grumbled but wrapped an arm around the child to keep them secure. It was no surprise that Sun knew what buttons to push after all this time together. “Only until they’re asleep.” While Sun cheered in their shared headspace, Moon began to read a story to help those still awake drift off to sleep. A tale of a princess that saved herself from an awful fate.
By the time he was done, every child was safely asleep, bundled in their blankets and dreaming happy dreams he hoped. Smiling to himself, he watched over them awhile. Quiet little children, safe and warm under his care. As they should be.
Speaking of children in his care, Moon looked down to see them fast asleep, little arms wrapped securely as they could around him. He had said only until they fell asleep. Holding them carefully, Moon stood up to tuck them in. Once on his feet, the child cuddled closer and wrapped their arm around his neck. He froze for a moment, just holding the little one to his chest. Children weren’t as afraid as they used to be, but it was so very rare they were so caring. Normally, they only clung to him if they were having nightmares and had realized he wasn’t their parent yet.
Sighing softly, he sat back down and kept them comfortable. Just once couldn’t hurt. Even as Sun teased him for being sweet on the child too.
“I blame you for this,” he teased his counterpart.
“I take full responsibility!” Sun chimed back and giggled. “They’re a good kid. They helped us a lot today, they deserve a little treat, don’t you think?”
“Just don’t let the other kids feel left out,” warned Moon sternly in their head. But all the same, he leaned back to watch the children until it was time to turn on the lights again. Cradling their new friend, Moon softly hummed a well loved lullaby. He almost didn’t want to turn the lights back on, but children couldn’t sleep forever. And he wasn’t cruel enough to wish for it.
When the lights did come on again, and a bit of coaxing to wake up some sleepy heads, it was time for one of the kids' favourite games, hide and seek!
Sun took his spot in the middle of the daycare and covered his eyes. His rays spun around happily as he counted. There was giggling and the sound of little feet happily running around to find the perfect hiding spot.
"Eight… Nine… TEN!" He exclaimed, finally peeking out from behind his fingers as they lifted from his face. "Ready or not, here I come!"
The first thing he saw was his friend standing in front of him. They looked up at him curiously. Had they never played this game before? Seeing Sun finally open his eyes, their own lit up and they giggled brightly.
"Sunny!" They cheered and raised their hands high over their head. Or at least as high as a little tot could manage. Sun was It so they wanted to be It too! Anything Sun did was obviously the best.
Laughing, Sun lifted his friend up high. “Oh, I found you, sunbeam,” he laughed, spinning them up over his head. “Are you going to help me find the others? I bet we can do it twice as fast!” When they nodded, he couldn’t help but laugh again. Holding them with one arm, Sun hurried around the daycare looking for more children who were laughing and giggling as they got caught.
While Moon may have been right, they couldn’t play favourites, Sun was having a blast with his new friend. He, and Moon, hoped they would come back to play lots and lots!
