Hello!
small question about "shadows of the crimean liberation"
in chapter 11 how come Janaff and Ulki didn't recognize Soren as a black dragon branded? I understand for story reasons but you mention specifically that they don't know even after meeting Deghinsea and Kurthnaga in Goldoa so I was wondering if there was another reason too?
Ah, thank you for asking! I do plan to go into it more in other stories, but since it would be from the point of view of characters who don't have the whole picture, I'm happy to provide a top down view.
There a few components to consider.
The first being that Micaiah and Soren recognize that there is something powerful and ancient within each other respectively during Radiant Dawn.
Soren: The Maiden of Dawn… What are you? One of the Branded, that’s for sure. But there is something else about you… Power. Yes, I can feel it in you. You possess great power. Micaiah: Yes, and you would know. There’s something very different about you, too. Your energy feels so…ancient. You and I seem to have so much in common. Radiant Dawn, "Blood Contract," Chapter 3-13
So there is some ancient energy within Soren, this is clear foreshadowing to Soren being descended from the Ancient Black Dragon King himself. Micaiah having some unique great power is a likely reference to her being the apostle and having inherited Lehran's ability to hear the Voice of the Goddess and awaken the goddesses.
The other, and most important, component is that Tibarn, Naesala, Reyson, and Caineghis all go to the meeting with Deghinsea and Kurthnaga, and presumably Ranulf, Janaff, Ulki, and Nealuchi all accompany their kings. Many of them speak to, with, and are around Soren, and none of them notice in the game. This despite Tibarn saying later on in Radiant Dawn that:
Tibarn: That Almedha is a formidable woman. At first I doubted her claim that she was the daughter of that useless old lizard. But even I had trouble holding her down. Me! She’s no ordinary beorc woman, that’s for sure. Elincia: I agree. Lady Almedha and Prince Kurthnaga share a striking resemblance, as well. Not just their faces, but their mannerisms, too. Tibarn: Is that how beorc spot blood relations? We laguz use scent, mainly. Speaking of which, something has been bothering me about Almedha. She has no distinct scent. It’s as if she is neither beorc nor laguz. Elincia: She actually told me something that I wanted to ask you about. She said that she lost her power when she became pregnant with King Pelleas. Radiant Dawn, "Unforgivable Sin," Chapter 4-5
The Extended Scripts expand on it a bit more
▼ Radiant Dawn, "Unforgivable Sin," Chapter 4-5
The basic gist being that each type of laguz has its own unique type of scent in addition to the major difference in scent between laguz and beorc. You can read a fan translation by the always lovely amielleon here.
Tibarn also remarks a few sentences later (fan translation, again, provided by amielleon) that "Parentless" have a scent closer to a beorc.
[ティバーン] 黒竜王がベオクと交わったとでも? それは、天地がひっくりかえっても ありえねえ話だろうぜ。▼ ”親無し”は、むしろ ベオクに近い匂いがするって話だ。 それでもないから…分からん。▼ Radiant Dawn, "Unforgivable Sin," Chapter 4-5
But that clearly means they have elements of both laguz and beorc in their scent, just more beorc than laguz. (This makes it clear why laguz who aren't in the know, like Skrimir or Vika, could mistake a Branded for a beorc, but Tibarn is clearly in the know and can pick up on however small that differentiation is).
And yet no one, not even he-who-spoils-the-Black-Knight-reveal-almost-certainly-based-on-scent-alone Ranulf, notices that Soren is dragon branded, let alone related to Dheginsea or Kurthnaga. Or if they do, they are weirdly and uncharacteristically quiet about it. Which some of them would be quiet (Ranulf is more of a quiet investigator, but even he has moments of cheek "I know what your secret is" [though maybe he's just trying not to upset Soren by keeping quiet]), and others (especially Tibarn) would never be quiet about that tidbit of information ("You'd let your own grandson die by sending us back to the Kauku Caves?" [I love Tibarn, but if he knew, he'd say something for certain when they're in Goldoa in Radiant Dawn, despite the fact that the revelation would kill Soren on the spot]).
So, why does Pelleas have to figure it out? Kurthnaga travels with the Greil Mercenaries in Part 4 and can fight alongside Soren in the Tower, and yet, nothing??? His own nephew is right there, and nothing???
I have nothing, no really good info from the games, so I have to come up with my own answers based on what little we do get.
So back to why can't anyone recognize what Soren's scent is. If the games don't give me the info I want, then I'll make it up.
Well. as Tibarn says, Almedha has no scent that is distinctive of either beorc or laguz. Beorc and laguz have different scents, and the different tribes have their own unique notes as well.
I've decided that the "beorc scent" is of different varities of metals (copper, gold, silver, tin, etc.) and the "laguz scent" is more earthy. Beast tribes being herbal (I reference lions having a basil note later on in that story), bird tribes being more air/water (herons smelling of petrichor, ravens like a storm, etc.), and dragons being stony (black dragons having a subtle clay scent, etc.). Soren mostly gains the metallic scent of beorc, as Tibarn describes, and since laguz have difficulty smelling anything beyond metal scents, the more subtle earthen smell is lost, they just know it's not all beorc if they're more aware than the average laguz.
In addition to that, he has an ancient power from his maternal grandfather within him that Micaiah can sense., and Reyson can also sense to a smaller degree. Maybe it alters Soren's scent a little, maybe not. I'm undecided as of right now.
So Soren just sits there, being a little enigma, because you would have to get up close and personal and smell him to get the obscured notes of his dragon scent, and no laguz is doing that. (Would be funny if the dragon laguz scent notes were stronger in his breath since he's a dragon. Like he just sighs very heavily because of someone annoying him and all the laguz in the room are like "!!!").
And that's why no one can tell he's black dragon for the moment.

was thinking about reyson (my beloved) again, and then an epiphany hit me.
alfred & reyson are very similar, character concept wise.
while their personalities are quite different, they are similar in a few things... [spoilers ahead]
homeland's association with 'green' nature. IDK really how to word it, but how firene is full of lush fields and such, and herons resided in serenes forest. both homelands were associated with peace, and would eventually go aflame.
homeland's association with 'green' nature. IDK really how to word it, but how firene is full of lush fields and such, and herons resided in serenes forest. both homelands were associated with peace, and would eventually go aflame.
desire to overcome their physical nature. this one was the key thing that made me think about their similarities. reyson's 'issue' comes from his own physicality/biology of being a heron laguz. heron laguz are pretty fragile. reyson simply punching oliver that didn't give serious damage to the latter, resulted in reyson fracturing the bones in his hand. even bad vibes can make him sick... alfred on the other hand is held back by his illness that he's had ever since he was a child. both characters wish to overcome this, and both have a similar 'ideal' they desire to achieve...muscles. alfred is allllll about muscles and training. most of his supports are about this fact. reyson is a bit more lowkey about it, but it's clear he thinks of tibarn as his ideal. "I wanted so much to be like Tibarn. Big body, strong wings…" (from feh, but i know the 'big body strong wings' is a thing from the actual duology somewhere, i just can't remember where). reyson even tries eating like tibarn, which almost gets him killed. both reyson & alfred cannot achieve their desired state because of their 'physical nature', but they do try.
related to the last point kinda, but both are noted to act atypical of their expected decorum (side note i really like the word decorum idk why). reyson is noted to not act typical of herons. wanting revenge & violence at first at those who burned his home down, acting more aggressive. it makes sense when you consider who he lived with after the serenes massacre... it's also noted how rafiel acts like what's expected of herons, which is contrasted by how reyson acts...well not. for alfred, he is described as 'a barbarian in prince's clothing' by céline. his diamant c support also had diamant doing prince™ things, and alfred's all like "what's your fav muscle 😁."
their designs are also very (very) pretty & on the more feminine side, but their ideals lay more 'typically masculine'. reyson has an androgynous appearance, while alfred has flower motifs + frills and such. these contrasts with reyson's more 'fiery' & 'aggressive' personality, and alfred's thing with muscles (both things are typically associated with masculinity.)
and uhhh yeah. mini analysis over! i've always loved reyson, and alfred just got better the more i got to know him. like i said, they do differ in personality in a lot of ways, but it's cool how two characters with similar setups can be so distinctive.

Replying to an ask, I was realising -
We know more about Glenn (Govan Fraldarius?), the brother of a secondary character who died protecting one of the primary ones, than about Supreme Leader’s sibling who was the original heir of the Empire.
Supreme Leader, iirc, was born as Ionius’s ninth child, or fifth one? Something like that?
What about the First child, the heir of the Emperor, son of his wife (Supreme Leader mentions how her mother wasn’t Ionius’s wife, meaning he had one, it wasn’t just, Anselma) ? What about said wife?
Ionius was yeeted away in Nopes, but damn if we don’t know jack shit about Adrestia.
Sure sure, we know Leopold’n’Waldemar, yay - but bar the duo of clowns?
Rafiel is the first prince of Serenes, Reyson and Leanne often mention their older sister Lilia, but no one ever mentions Supreme Leader’s oldest sibling? Ionuis’s first child? Supreme Leader’s stepmother(s)?
Why would Ferdie have developed a rivalry with Supreme Leader, if she had older siblings already in line for the throne? Why would Hubert - the Vestra heir - be “given” to Supreme Leader, if the Imperial Heir was already around?
The more I think about it, the less Adrestia makes sense, or at least the Adrestia we were presented with.
I think those siblings really existed, but their absence in the plot maybe mean the “Vestra” tasked with overlooking, let’s call him (it’s a him because it’s Adrestia!) Hans 2, heir to the throne, wasn’t from Hubert’s dad’s line, but from a cadet line? Cadet line had a child “around the age” of Hans 2, so that cadet branch would have become the most important one, had Hans 2 survived, because cadet Vestra would have become the “Vestra of the Emperor” while Hubert would only be the Vestra of the ninth/fifth princess.
Ditto for Ludwig ?
He’d have championned Ferdie to show his talent and might and “nobility” to Hans 2 instead of Supreme Leader, but when Hans 2 was Arundel’d and only Supreme Leader survived, he switched his focus?
In FE Tellius, in FE10, Tibarn talks about it, passingly. But in FE Fodlan, there’s no rumours of a “plague” having befell the imperial family, mainly the “series of tragedies” in Rhea’s book.
Hans 2?
Even Rhea’s dead siblings are more relevant, they appear in the form of relics ! But Hans 2? His existence blows a hole in the Adrestia we know, its political landscape and Supreme Leader herself.
Of course you should compare what can be compared, but when ASOIAF’s Ned goes “this shit should never have been mine to dealt with, it should have been my dead older brother’s”, this is never mentionned in FE16.
We have Rhea feeling as inedaquate, being trusted in this position as the “Guardian” of Fodlan because her mom was deboned, but Supreme Leader never says this regarding Hans 2.
Ionius himself never mentions Hans 2 or his other children.
Tl;Dr : FE16 wrote a story where the Adrestian Empire’s heir is less important to people than House Fraldarius - a vassal of House Blaiddyd - ‘s first son.
GG guys, 10k years of lore.

[ Sweet Bun Trio ] - A selection of traditional Faerghus pastries, all small enough to be eaten in one delicious bite! The first bun is filled with sweet cream and topped with icing and a candied cherry. The second is a sweet roll filled with almonds, pecans, and dried cranberries and glazed with honey. The third is a bun sliced in half, filled with almond paste and whipped cream, dusted with powdered sugar on top.
"I hope this is in the Heron appetite," He expresses, offering forward a silver plate of delicacies -- he hadn't much the appetite for sweets or confections, but perhaps the jovial young Heron would. "I'm not too sure how different your meals are to mine, but I would imagine the feast of a dragon different than much that the Bird Tribe would consume."
He offers a smile, though it stays hidden behind his mask. "Consider this royal diplomacy, and ... a deep thank you. For everything."
"Oh!" Leanne turns towards the Dragon prince, the company, along with the sweet scent of the pastries, bringing a grin to her lips. Taking one of the trio offered, she bites into it with practiced care. The cream within bursts with delightful sweetness, and Leanne's wings fluff behind her in contentment. "It is... very good!" she chirps.
Thank you, he says, and she knows what he speaks of, the memory of deep pain that casts a somber tone to the tune of his heart, even as he smiles for her. She and Reyson might have helped Rajaion return to this form, but she knows the journey to recovery must be far from over. (Just like with Father.)
It is that thought that draws her to action. Leaning closer, the Heron princess takes her brooch, with the black feather adorning it, and fastens it to the Dragon's clothing. Whether the feather might hold the same significance, might bring forth the same feelings of trust and safety for him as it does for her, is not the most important thing. Leanne's smile turns gentler.
"Promise me you will find joy in this evening, Prince Rajaion?" she asks in the Ancient Tongue, and while she cannot be certain he would understand her words fully, the swirling of Seid Magic around them speaks of her well-wishes in a way that she hopes he can feel all the same.
You deserve all the happiness in the world.

a friend characterized reyson as “wholesome” so I want to clarify that Im regularly obsessed with PoR reyson who is not only hot but scary. traumatized. vengeful. out for blood. beautiful yet angry and in tremendous pain. his whole race is hardwired to be peaceful and delicate and unable to stomach violence and chaos, but you genocided the nice ones and now there’s just reyson who has gone so grimdark that he wants to watch the world burn. reyson “had to be convinced not to commit mass murder” von fire emblem. reyson “broke his hand punching a slave owner in the face” von tellius. prince “I love it when my beau launches pirate raids on my behalf because no amount of violence will ever slake my thirst for human blood” serenes

at a certain point, when the heron prince (made of wet tissue paper) grabs you by the shirt and makes a threat display with his wings, you have to make a choice on how to deal with this without making him even madder . you may:
remain unmoved, which will make him even angrier, because you're pretty sure you remember him being Sensitive™ about being so frail, and he's already mad at you for selling him to duke tanas, and being unbothered by his threat display will probably make it worse,
humor the threat display, which is. a difficult thing to do given that he'll definitely take it as you being patronizing, because your face is Just Like That and again he's sensitive about being so frail
anyway you've chosen option 2, but "now, now, reyson, there's no need to be so ~emotional~" was probably the worst thing that could have fallen out of your big stupid beak, and you have a REPUTATION to uphold so you can't fumble and recant your words, so now reyson is the maddest you have ever seen him and you really hope he doesn't break his own hand on your face or bust a vein or something bc that would be impossible to explain to (a) tibarn good goddess, or (b) nealuchi, who will definitely give you the Im Not Mad Just Disappointed face and mope for days about the poor white prince

Tibarn!!!
Tumblr media
list time
Insanely strong
great design
birds are awesome, love bird laguz
good colors
He's a very respectable character
Will stand for what he believes in no matter what
So Tibarn is the king of Phoenicis, which is the hawk laguz country. In Phoenicis the king is chosen by who is the strongest. He also doesn't like Beorc and despises Begnion because of the massacre in Serenes forest, where afterwards he took in the heron prince Reyson and his dad. For a long while after the massacre he attacked Begnions ships as a small revenge for what they did to the heron tribe. He doesn't join Ike in the first game per se, but he is fighting in the war on the same side as Ike, but is most of the time in different places doing different things with his own army I believe until the final battle where he can join Ikes team.
He joins for a much longer time in the second game and he is incredibly strong, like pretty much nothing can kill him, he does insane damage and he can be transformed forever unlike most other laguz
BIRD GUY!!!!!!! WINGS!!!!!!! WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!! his design is so cool…….. all the laguz I’ve seen so far have been really cool!!!!!!

cont. from here.
an empress? that does make reyson's eyebrows raise very slightly. he inclines his head toward her ( she would outrank his title of ' prince ' but only if he cared about beorc titles and their hierarchy ) and offers her a slight smile. she still seems so apprehensive, but...
well, maybe it's with good reason. it sounds as though she's had a lot to think about, and not a lot of support. he does not ask why that is, instead he just nods. "you're not asking for too much. i offered, didn't i?" it's simple. at least for the moment.
"reyson. you can just call me reyson. i don't see the need for titles," he says, surprised at the way she just takes his arm, but catching up quickly enough that he begins leading her in the direction of the greenhouse. "i find it relaxing to be among the flowers. and at this time of day, there likely won't be anyone there for a while yet. you can tell me about what ails you on the way. your heart is... heavy, isn't it?"

Hello, I hope you're having a nice day!
I was reading your Daein!Soren story the other day when I noticed this bit:
"Rajaion muttered something under his breath, it sounded like the ancient tongue and it sounded as irritated as Reyson did whenever the heron prince reverted to his native tongue."
I honestly am a big fan of the idea that Rajaion can speak in the ancient tongue, it makes sense that he can, dragons being very old and all.
It does make me wonder if Almedha and Kurthnaga can speak it too (or at least understand it)
Hi! I am having a nice day, just perpetually exhausted lmao
Thanks for coming by and I hope you're having a good day as well!
To arrive at my answer for Rajaion speaking the ancient tongue and Almedha and Kurthnaga's fluency in ancient, I'm going to walk you through my thought process about the prevalence of the ancient tongue in Tellius and the development of the modern tongue.
Hatari was separated from Tellius during the great flood, and the ancient tongue is the only language that they know. Rafiel introduces the modern tongue to them. So it stands to reason that back in the day, the people of Tellius only spoke the ancient tongue as well, and the modern tongue developed after the Great Flood. Naliah refers to the modern tongue as the language of Tellius because it originated there.
I imagine, therefore, that Dheginsea, Altina, and Soan spoke the ancient tongue as their first language since it is only about 20 years between the Flood and the war between Ashera and Yune concluding, and 20 years is not long enough for a new language to develop and become the common language (and Dheginsea and Soan are laguz, so they also grew up before the Flood)
At some point, the modern tongue developed in Begnion, I'm not sure when, just sometime down the line, but very likely after Dheginsea took all the dragons and founded Goldoa. So for a long while after modern caught on within Begnion, I imagine the dragons still spoke ancient due to their isolation, and it was therefore the first language of the older dragons born within Goldoa. The dragons obviously eventually started learning the modern tongue, and it probably became the most commonly used language after a while because Nailah says the modern tongue is a simpler language that is easier to master compared to the ancient tongue. However, Nasir is shown to be able to read the ancient tongue as well as Reyson or Lillia can, which denotes a mastery of the language that comes from being fluent in it in a way that people realistically are not if they learn a language only as a scholarly endeavor (no one is "fluent" in Latin these days, for example, and even experts in Latin need a dictionary to dicpher texts written in it).
With all of the above in mind, I think Rajaion grew up only speaking ancient and learned modern as an adult/late teen equivalent for dragons, as did Nasir and Gareth. Almedha likely grew up learning both, with a heavy lean towards modern as she got older. Kurthnaga and Ena are the youngest dragons, so they probably grew up with modern as their first language. Kurthnaga has more likely than not picked up a bit of the ancient tongue as it is still his family's first language and older Goldoan documents would be written in it, but I think he's not especially fluent in it because he's never been immersed in it.

📋 fluffs my wings at u sweetly
Name: Leanne.
Age: 71, appears youthful
Gender: Female.
Class: Golden Deer.
Notes:
The young heron princess, one of the only remaining members of the heron clan. I can still remember my surprise at learning that there had been another alive along besides Prince Reyson. She is a sweet girl though, and incredibly innocent. Perhaps her naivete will fade with age, as she has not spent much time in the world outside of her safe haven - nor has she spent it awake. She is surprisingly more like Prince Reyson that one would expect. They are both far too stubborn and headstrong for my tastes, even if she is by far the more toned down of the two. I imagine Kurthnaga gets along with her quite fine though. (Scribbled at the bottom, almost illegible) It has been quite some time since I was able to speak the old tongue with another. Perhaps she would appreciate that?

* a kiss on the back of their hand, formal yet intimate
She did not spend much time with the heron prince durin' the war; he always felt mighty intimidatin' to be around. Like he was angry 'bout somethin'---even after rescuin' Princess Leanne.
Nephenee tried avoidin' the finer points of laguz politics, seein' as how fragile it all were. Betrayals were commonplace, leastaways durin' the war, and she had more important things t'focus on instead of stickin' her nose where it don't belong.
Still, she came to this school to learn; mayhap she can also fill in the gaps of her own knowledge 'bout things back home. Pure luck both the Heron Prince and King of Kilvas happened to be here at the same time.
(Though she'd as like shout at King Naesala as hold a polite conversation.)
Anyhow, she greets Prince Reyson, surprised by the whole hand kiss thing. Ain't that only for fancy noble ladies? Clearing her throat, she blinks at him, hand still caught in his delicate grip.
"...Nice t'see you, too, Your Highness." Her face feels warm. "How's your sister?"
