Anton Chekhov, it appears, was not the first Russian literary luminary to visit Hong Kong. Chekhov had stopped off in October 1890 and wrote about its “wonderful bay”. [...] But Chekhov was beaten to the punch by Ivan Goncharov who stopped by in 1853. Goncharov is now best now known for his novel Oblamov, but his bestseller at the time was a 700-page tome of travel-writing called The Frigate Pallada. Goncharov had been taken, as a sort of official scribe, on the Russian naval expedition sent to “open Japan”. If that sounds like American Commodore Matthew Perry’s expedition, it very much was: the Pallada arrived in Japan several weeks after Perry. The Pallada [...] went [...] via the Cape of Good Hope, Java, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai, with side-trips to Manila, Korea and the Ryukyus. [...] Edyta M Bojanowska relates all this, and much more [in her book] [...]. Bojanowska uses Goncharov’s travelogue as a window on Russia, a window through which to view the European, and particularly British, imperial project [...].

Nikolai Rezanov had tried to open Japan in 1804; he got nowhere. (He did however continue on to North America and all the way down to San Francisco where he got engaged to Conchita, the [...] daughter of the Spanish governor, a story which became a late Soviet-era rock opera.)

Alaska ended up being sold to the United States a decade or so after Goncharov’s voyage. He was furthermore an anglophile and thought that the British had on the whole the right ideas about empire. Goncharov settled on Korea as a good potential target for Russia (“Goncharov Island” is now known as Mayang-do Island, the site of a North Korean missile base) [...]. Goncharov marvels at the pineapples piled up “like turnips”. “The goal of civilization,” Bojanowska quotes him, is to get these pineapples up to St Petersburg where they were currently unheard of luxury items. I am continuing to run out of John + Elis Radio X episodes at a mildly distressing rate, I'm into August 2018 now and they run until March 2019. Yes there are several hundred BBC episodes after that, but they'll be different, and I've got used to these ones. The Radio X episodes are escapist, from when the world was easier. The BBC episodes are going to run through 2020 and I just can't listen to those initial months where they'll say everyone should wash their hands and make jokes about the Imagine video.

Luckily, the side project of following all John Robins' other things alongside the radio chronology will extend this a bit. Their book came out in October 2018, though I think it was written by August, so I could listen to that audiobook pretty much any time now and call it in line with where I'm at in the radio show. I'll get on that soon.

Also, I've reached the radio episodes in which John Robins is telling us about filming his digital television internet-based quiz show. Specifically, he's telling us about the production company hiring someone to buy him new clothes, because he's not allowed to wear Queen-branded or brewery-branded t-shirts while presenting a show on Dave. I was looking forward to this radio show letting me know what happens to a comedian the year after they win the Perrier Award (I'm aware that it wasn't actually called that when he won it in 2017, but I cannot be bothered to look up what it was called in any given year), and now I know. Apparently it's extending a tour to the point where you develop different medical ailments every week from the stress of traveling and at one point turn up to a radio show an hour late because you forgot you were recording, and they give you a digital television internet-based quiz show for which they buy you new clothes that do not advertise breweries or rock bands. It sounds very glamorous.

I've referred to it as a comedy panel show before, because for some reason I thought it had comedians as guests. I've just looked it up and learned it actually features members of the public, like a regular quiz show. And that sounds quite bad. I didn't have terribly high expectations anyway, but this has lowered them. Sunil Patel's all right, though. I mean, I think he's all right as a comedian. Don't know what he's like on this TV show, haven't watched it yet.

But I've got it downloaded and I think I'll get into it this weekend, as I've reached that point in the chronology. I looked up the Chortle review, and its opening paragraph is exactly what I imagined this show would be, based on the synopsis:

This next bit of condemnation comes off as significantly harsher, just because it could function fairly accurately as a description of John Robins' broadcasting/comedy style as a whole, and not just being about this one quiz show that I assume John Robins does not hold up as his greatest artistic achievement:

Sick burn and everything, Steve, and you do have a point that John Robins' habit of going into a vaguely Partridge-inspired voice can sometimes blur the line between parody that works and just actually doing a thing that doesn't work. However, that is some harsh criticism coming from someone who doesn't know how to put a period at the end of a sentence. Maybe learn to use punctuation first, Steve, and then you can talk shit about digital DJs who watched too much Alan Partridge when they were growing up, and possibly base just a touch too much of their persona on ironically imitating that.

Actually, that sounds all right. I enjoy watching John Robins at once try to embrace and stay at arm's length from things. Maybe it won't be so bad.

I think I will start watching this show this weekend, I'll let you all know if it's terrible. Or, tell you what, I'll let you all know if it's good. I don't need to report on it every time I expect something to be bad, but watch it anyway due to my brain's relentless drive toward completism, and it meets my expectations. If it surprises me, I'll definitely let you all know.

Five Nights at Freddy's (FNaF) is a video game series and media franchise created by Scott Cawthon. The first video game was released on August 8, 2014, and the resultant series has since gained worldwide popularity. The main series consists of nine video games taking place in locations connected to a fictional family pizza restaurant franchise named "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza", after its mascot, the animatronic bear Freddy Fazbear. In most games, the player assumes the role of a night-time employee, who must utilize tools such as security cameras, lights, doors, and vents to defend themselves against animatronic characters who inhabit the locations and become mobile and hostile at night. The series' lore is gradually revealed through voice recordings, minigames, and Easter eggs featured throughout the games. The franchise also includes spin-off games and other media, such as a feature film adaptation, novel trilogy, and an anthology series, comprising an all-encompassing fictional universe. The franchise maintains an active fanbase, known for its production of fan art and fan games, and merchandise for the games is available internationally. The idea for Five Nights at Freddy's stemmed from the negative reception of Scott Cawthon's previous game, the family-friendly Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. Players said that the main character (a young beaver) looked like "a scary animatronic animal",[1] and reviewer James Sterling called the game "unintentionally terrifying".[2][3] Initially discouraged by the criticism, Cawthon (who had previously primarily developed Christian-oriented games) eventually used the feedback to make something intentionally scarier.[2] Five Nights at Freddy's was released via Desura on August 8, 2014. On August 20, after it was approved by the service's crowdsourcing platform Greenlight, Five Nights at Freddy's was also released on Steam.[4] When the game was picked up by well-known YouTubers it became an internet sensation.[5] The sequels were released on November 10, 2014, March 2, 2015, July 23, 2015, October 7, 2016, December 4, 2017, June 27, 2018, May 28, 2019, November 25, 2019, and December 16, 2021, respectively. A spin-off from the series, FNaF World, was announced in a Steam post by Cawthon in September 2015,[6] and was released in January 2016. Gaza's Trees Disappear, Showing a Humanitarian Crisis (March 2024, Belling Cat):

Satellite imagery from March 9, when compared with imagery from October 15, shows that the area within this corridor has been heavily deforested with more than roughly 4,300 acres of land cleared of trees and other plant life.

On February 29, the Union of Gaza Strip Municipalities issued a statement saying that Gaza Strip communities had not received fuel deliveries since October, a fact that was causing a cascading effect across all sectors of society and leading to “great suffering.” These acute fuel shortages have led civilians to cut down trees in order to start fires for cooking or warmth. In a food security report from December 2023, the World Food Programme stated that 70 percent of internally displaced people (IDPs) in southern Gaza burn firewood for fuel and 13 percent waste products.

Bellingcat’s analysis of satellite imagery from Gaza, conducted with our partners at Scripps News, shows clear signs of the mass removal of trees which intensified in the winter months. These areas include cemeteries, parks and a university campus.

Importantly, satellite imagery shows that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have removed significant numbers of trees for stated military purposes, though more often in orchards and farmland. These cases can often be distinguished by the presence of vehicle tracks; the relative absence of vehicle tracks when done by Palestinian civilians is a tell-tale sign of the fuel shortages which drive them to such desperate measures.

Israel’s Campaign Against Palestinian Olive Trees (March 2023, Yale Review of International Studies)

Remarkably, olive trees contribute to 14% of Palestine’s economy.1 Since agriculture is the foundation of Palestinian exports, the production of these goods provides the population with the sustenance and support it needs. Family-owned farms carry the responsibility for cultivating the trees and pressing the thousands of olives yearly for exportation. With the already high unemployment rate, it’s crucial to maintain these farms as they are the primary source of income for about 800,000 Palestinian families.2 Beyond the monetary value, olive trees have become symbolic of Palestinians attachment to their land. The trees are drought resistant and grow under harsh conditions. Many olive trees date to centuries prior to the Israeli occupation

In August 2021 alone, more than 9,000 have been removed, and on February 9th2020, 50 olive trees were forcefully uprooted and destroyed in the occupied West Bank region of Salfit.4 These unprecedented attacks are mainly due to the ongoing expansion of settlements in the West Bank, which are encroaching on the livelihood of Palestinian families.

Moonlight (2016, Barry Jenkins)

Moonlight is a 2016 film written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney.

The film was positively criticized and won numerous awards, including the Best Film Award from the National Society of Film Critics, the Golden Globe for Best Drama and three Oscars for Best supporting actor, for best non-original screenplay and for best film: it is the first LGBT-themed film to obtain this recognition (after Philadelphia), as well as the first with a cast entirely made up of African Americans, and the second for the highest grossing low (behind The Hurt Locker which won in 2010).

Chiron is an African-American child originally from Liberty City, called "Little" by everyone. He and his mother live together in a Miami neighborhood marked by drugs and violence.

As an adult Chiron becomes a drug dealer in a bad neighborhood of Atlanta and there he tries to live on his own, armed with his faithful revolver.

In 2003, Tarell Alvin McCraney wrote a semi-autobiographical play, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, partly to deal with the death of his AIDS-stricken mother.

After the release of his first film, Medicine for Melancholy in 2008, Barry Jenkins wrote several screenplays, none of which went into production. He and producer Romanski began brainstorming sessions via video chat twice a month about his projects, and shortly thereafter Jenkins began work on the script for McCraney, which he learned about through Borscht's Miami arts collective. After consulting with McCraney, Jenkins wrote the first draft of the film during a month-long stay in Brussels.

Jenkins sought financing for the film throughout 2013, finding success after sharing the script with Plan B Entertainment executives at that year's Telluride Film Festival. Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner became producers of the film, while A24 undertook to finance it and handle worldwide distribution, which also marked the company's first production.

The film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and subsequently at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, and at the New York Film Festival in October.

The film was chosen as the opening film of the 2016 Rome Film Festival. Its first television appearance took place on 4 March 2018 on Sky Cinema with the title Moonlight - Tre storie di una vita.

On the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes the film receives 98% of positive professional reviews with an average rating of 9.00 out of 10 based on 384 critics, while on Metacritic it obtains a score of 99 out of 100 based on 53 criticism.

On 5 October 2023, a major global investigation – the “Predator Files” – was published exposing the proliferation of surveillance technologies around the world and the failure of governments and the European Union (EU) to properly regulate the industry. Since 2020, it has been controlled by the holding company Thalestris, which is based in Ireland. End of the Year Review: A Three Year Act Edition

My birthday is ten days away, so I felt it appropriate to write another one of these End of Year Reviews before then. I decided to summarize the last two years since I didn't bother to do so after 2019. The motivation to do this came from regretting to not record and keep any of my previous EoY posts from 2018 and earlier. As I get older, those said years became a blur to me, which is unfortunate. But I digress, let's start things off with the glorious year of...

2020

The year when Covid went into full swing around the globe, but also the year of brand new beginnings and a year full of insane luck and precise timing. In 2019, literally the day after Christmas, I was offered a job as a 2D Animator for a unique Cybersecurity training firm in CA. After a brief moment of panic and my best friend convincing me to take a chance with this new venture, I agreed to move out west at the end of January, and start my new job in February. For first two weeks I stayed at an AirBnB close to my job, and eventually moved into a makeshift studio space attached to a family home that belonged to a fellow alumni's mother. I never imagined I would finally leave Michigan after 35 years of personal pain and misery, to have a job that actually paid a livable wage that was also synonymous with my career path, and be able to leave behind an environment that put me in a constant state of stress and depression. For the first time in ages, I felt truly blessed. In the Spring, my best friend and I started getting re-acquainted with an old mutual friend of ours that we seldom spoke to in years. We ended up spending weekend nights having three way calls, discussing creative projects and talking about life in general. Never thought I'd re-connect with them in such a way, but now we have a much tighter friendship bond than we did in the past.

2021

After being able to save a lump sum of money thanks to the low rent cost and full on public transit reliance, I finally acquired a car. It didn't take me long to get re-acquainted with driving on the road; not having to deal with the iconic pot holes and rough weather worn terrain made travel cakewalk. I took my time to discover some great local haunts, like GraphAids and Record Outlet. However, in October I realized that my body was out of shape, and when I weighed myself for the first time in forever, I was hitting 231 Lbs. I took it upon myself to start a weight and task log in order to keep track of CICO, and exercise again. ( I was rotating between DDPY, Ringfit and the mini-elliptical) I also acquired a nutritionist to guide me in making better decisions for my diet. When November rolled around, I came to the conclusion that I needed to move out of the little studio space and into my own apartment. While it helped me save a great deal of money, the space was tiny, I missed having a stove, and a washer and dryer nearby. My landlady was oddly avoidant on giving rent history to my soon-to-be apartment management, but come later December I was still able to get approval for a unit. That same month, I announced the end of my long running web comic The Shufflers. It was one of the hardest decisions I had to make, but a necessary one. I still think about whether or not I can pick it back up again, but only time can tell.

2022

No doubt, is perhaps one of my favorite years living out in CA by far. I moved into an upper level apartment, got promoted to Production Supervisor at my workplace, I traveled to Colorado Springs to hang out with my friend, got to visit The Academy Museum with my workmates and explored the Studio Ghibli exhibition, and roamed a little bit around my new city and found some neat shops and restaurants. Along with it's pleasures, also came with great internal struggles; even though I left my old life two years ago, some of the excess baggage was still clinging on to me, and my perception of self was still very unhealthy. I started receiving therapy in June twice a month, in order to help me untangle my past grievances with myself and to help me pull away from the people that caused it. These sessions have been a real eye opener, and keeping a journal based on each one has greatly helped. One of the hardest challenges I've ever faced so far was convincing myself that I am worthy of self love and respect, to undo the belief that I am an unlovable, creep-ass overweight toad, and stop hiding my honest feelings and insecurity behind a goofy ass mask. While it's been a painful journey, the self-discovery was worth it.

Plans for 2023

I'll be continuing my self-improvement goals throughout this year. Since last October, I went down to 202 LBS. Next year I'd like to hit 175 or less. (Ideally I should be aiming for 135 as the ultimate end goal, but that won't be likely for another year and a half). Outside of that, the other goals I'd like to achieve are;

Continue making Animated shorts.

Get contacts, particularly ones I can wear if I decide to go swimming.

Get my hair professionally colored. Been thinking of doing a red violet or dark purple.

Re-work my wardrobe more

Continue exploring and go to more events.

Work on an actual comic project again.

So far for all the goals I've set in previous years, I was able to attain them. I hope that I'll be able to continue that trend in the next year.

A Review of 'The Flash' (2023)

Toward the beginning, Barry tells a maternity nurse to speak with a mental health professional because the Justice League is not good at such a thing. This made me sad, given the context of the real-life issues with Ezra Miller in recent years and the toxic workplace environment described by Ray Fisher after the Justice League movie was released. On its own, the story of The Flash is a fun twist on an origin story by utilizing the Flashpoint Paradox concept as a premise. We are introduced to Bary’s origin story, the introduction to the DC multiverse, and the appearance of Reverse Flash. For the downsides, I believe the CGI babies in the opening sequence and CGI Speedforce for the rest of the movie are horrendously rendered. It’s like a rough draft animatic instead of a final rendering for a multi-million dollar movie project. I am giving it a mid rating for being a mixed bag of results. A review point is given for bringing back Michael Keaton as Batman. Another review point is given for containing all the cameo appearances, even though some are extremely bad CGI reconstructions. And a final review point is given for the story arc being emotionally engaging but avoiding the usual tropes that would be easy bait to include in this type of story. My last words would be to admit shamefully I like Emo Kara. When will she start an emo band and name it All Kryptonian Rejects?

The Flash (2023) is a superhero film that adapts the popular DC comic book storyline Flashpoint, in which Barry Allen, aka The Flash, uses his super speed to travel back in time and save his mother from being murdered. However, his actions have unforeseen consequences, as he creates a new timeline where General Zod has conquered Earth where no other superheroes exist. To restore his original reality, Barry must team up with an older Bruce Wayne, who has retired from being Batman, and a young Kara Zor-El, the last survivor of Krypton.

The film is directed by Andy Muschietti, best known for his horror films It (Part One and Two) and Mama. The screenplay is written by Christina Hodson, who also penned Birds of Prey (2020) and Bumblebee (2018). The film stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne, Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul, and Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth.

The intention of this movie is expected to be a game-changer for the DCEU, as it formally introduces the concept of the multiverse into the DC movies universe, which allows for different versions of the same characters to coexist in multiple realities. The film also marks the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, who previously played the character in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). Keaton’s Batman is said to be a mentor figure for Barry and Kara.

The movie had been in studio production development with Warner Bros for over a decade, with various writers and directors attached and departed over the years. The original plan for a release date was supposed to be in 2018 but got delayed multiple times due to creative differences, production issues, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production setbacks, and controversies surrounding Ezra Miller. The film finally began filming in April 2021 in London and wrapped up in October 2021. The film’s first trailer was released at DC FanDome in October 2021, generating positive buzz among fans and critics.

Arctic Monkeys’ The Car album review — a stylish, plush affair (Financial Times review)

The band settle into their new luxurious style in a superior follow-up to ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’

When Arctic Monkeys’ last album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino came out in 2018, graffiti appeared in their former home city Sheffield depicting a coffin, with a message reading: “Hey Alex . . . How’s California?” It was directed at the band’s frontman Alex Turner, an émigré to Los Angeles. The band’s new musical direction was a far cry from their roots too. Instead of clattering guitars, South Yorkshire slang and sharply drawn observations about Topshop princesses and lads squaring up in the taxi queue, Turner and his bandmates had chosen to reinvent themselves as space-age lounge musicians in a concept album themed around a luxury hotel. Of such dreams are rock stars’ follies made.

For their seventh album The Car, the quartet have doubled down on the stylistic swerve that they made on Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. The music sounds expensive, a plush affair with billowing strings, richly-layered production and the gilded shimmer of cymbals. Turner sighs and croons his vocals where once he drawled and sneered. The lyrics depict a decadent world of marble staircases, moated buildings, the popping of champagne corks and aeroplane descents over the French Riviera. But if the heart sinks at the prospect of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino II, then it rises at the discovery that this time the Arctic Monkeys have managed to carry off the style.

“There’d Better Be a Mirrorball” ushers us into the album with a velvety ballad in which Turner marks the passing of a relationship that has spun off its axis with aching vocals and elegant phrases (“Yesterday’s still leaking through the roof”). “I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am” dramatises lyrics about feeling out of place with funk guitar and psychedelic orchestrations, music that both struts and swoons. Like the rest of the album, it has been produced by longtime collaborator James Ford.

“Sculptures of Anything Goes” has a brooding electronic beat and breathy, high vocals with cryptic verses about fakeness and truth, a regular theme in Turner’s writing. “Body Paint” is addressed to “a master of deception and subterfuge”, an ex-lover (it seems) who provokes the singer to his most agitated performance on the record. He is accompanied by a slow-burning guitar solo from Jamie Cook that evokes the spirit of Queens of the Stone Age, an important musical touchstone for the band.

The album’s title track is a luxuriant 1970s orchestral rocker with a dreamlike air of suspension. “Big Ideas” is another sumptuously arranged number in which Turner recounts a comic tale of convening an orchestra to record a song, only to forget how it goes. Themes of disillusion and exhaustion recur throughout this lavishly appointed album — but unlike its predecessor, the results do not exhaust or disappoint.

Unit 9

My time in Bali, Indonesia opened my eyes to a world of nature that I had no idea existed. I felt immediately connected to nature and the way that the locals use their land. The respect that the people of Bali have for the animals and the nature they live with is inspiring. This trip taught me so much about how the people and the animals interact in so many new ways. 

One of the most interesting and shocking things I discovered on this trip was Kopi Luwak. This is a coffee made from partly digested coffee cherries. An animal called the Asian Palm Civet eats the coffee cherries and as they pass through the intestines, they are fermented and then defecated. My family and I visited a Kopi Luwak shop and were given a tour of the sanctuary where the Civet cats are kept. They explained to us the process of obtaining the coffee but also the cultural significance of the drink to the people of Bali. They explained how many of the Kopi Luwak coffee shops keep their Civet cats in terrible conditions where they are forced into cages, but this specific family was operating a sanctuary where the Civet cats are treated humanely. Learning about humane animal practices in popular tourist destinations was also an eye opening experience for me.

I remember drinking the coffee and wondering why it almost had a slight lemon scent, and the farmers explained it was a byproduct of the fermentation and these beans have a higher level of citric acid than regular beans.

This allowed me to realize how delicate the line between mass consumption and cultural significance is when it comes to nature. Elves and Fairies once lived separately until many , many years before Ben and Holly were born, the elves and fairies have a war against each other to expand their land into the other's territory. They both signed a treaty which said that those who won will transfer the workforce to the other. (so the other can't win because they are producing the asset that the other used to win against them) Ultimately, the fairies won by magic (when king Thistle's parents ruled the fairies)and expanded their territory, and transfer a lot of their production and workforce to the elves (the reason why the elves are making the wands but not the fairies, although elves don't do magic).

P/s: This is not cannon in he real show. It is just a headcannon and a theory of mine. One thing it’s illogical in Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom is (as far as I can remember when watching the show), that the a lot of the parents (Ex: King and Queen Thistle; Mr and Mrs Elf, Strawberry’s parents) doesn’t have first names. However, some of the adults have first names, such as Granny and Granpapa Thistle (Millicent and Victor Thistle); Wise Old Elf (Cedric Elf) ; Redbeard the Elf Pirate (Nigel);Nanny Plum (Plum, obviously). So, I have decided to give these characters first names (fan names) for sake of simpilicity:

In 2016, Berlin-based artist Andrew Pekler travelled to Thailand and visited Khao Sok National Park where he gathered field recordings and recorded video footage of the park's flora and fauna. Some of excerpts of this material was used in the compositions and live presentation of Pekler's album “Tristes Tropiques”, released on the Faitiche label in 2016. Two years later, Pekler further processed, edited and mixed the materials to create the one-hour long audio-visual piece “Khao Sok Extension”. A monochrome landscape of branches, leaves, flowers, grass, vines and bamboo shifts slowly through multiple exposures and inversions of color tones. The speed and tone are as if wandering through a forest under the influence of psychedelic substances. The natural sounds of insects, bird calls, wind and water are processed and layered in ways that evoke electronic textures, sequences and effects. However, no instruments were employed in the production, Pekler's field recordings from Khao Sok are the only sounds used. The visuals and audio blur perceptual boundaries between the "natural" and "artificial" while evoking an ambience that is both immersive and deeply uncanny.

[Note] In the video, a 30 minutes long audio version of “Khao Sok Extension” is repeated once. The audio on the CD is a newly-mixed 54 minutes long version.

Andrew Pekler

Andrew Pekler was born in 1973 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. His family immigrated to the United States in 1980. He has resided in Germany since 1995. Andrew Pekler works with techniques of digital sampling and analog synthesis to recontextualize found sounds and archival musical materials. Since 2002 he has released solo and collaborative musical works for labels includung Kranky, Faitiche, Shelter Press, Staubgold and Senufo Editions. Pekler has also produced a number of video and installation works – always in combination with sound. Together with cultural anthropologist Kiwi Stefanie Menrath he developed Phantom Islands – A Sonic Atlas, an interactive online map that charts the sounds and histories of a number of islands that were once found on nautical maps but have since disappeared. Giving A Forest A Head Start On Its Future Climate: Should We Lend A Helping Hand ?

Many of us use the winter to plan for the next season’s restoration and planting projects. In the next 100 years New Jersey’s climate is predicted to change dramatically as the northeast is warming faster than other regions of the country. This point was driven home at the October 5, 2022 New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team conference where Dr Evelyn Beaury, current postdoc at Princeton University, presented “Seeding Ecosystems of the Future” based on her research done with the Northeast Regional Invasive Species & Climate Change (RISCC) Management Network. In New Jersey, historically unprecedented warming is projected for the 21st century with average annual temperatures increasing by 4.1 °F to 5.7 °F by 2050 (NJDEP, 2020). The question posed is with rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, reduced chilling degree days, and an increase in growing degree days how can we help our forest ecosystems adapt and how will species adapt to change?

What is assisted migration?

One proposed adaptation technique is the idea of assisted migration. Assisted migration is human assisted migration of species in response to climate change. Many are familiar with wildlife migration, for example annual spring and fall bird migrations, but you may not realize that plants also migrate. Forest plant species that cannot tolerate warming temperatures are naturally shifting their ranges and migrating north. For example, based on the US Forest Service Climate Change Tree Atlas, New Jersey’s forest habitat is predicted to be more suitable to forests just south of us where Loblolly Pine, Sweetgum, Pitch Pine, Post Oak, and White Oak may be the more abundant species. Red maple, while still abundant, is expected to be less so in the future along with Sugar Maple and Red Oak (NJDEP, 2020).

But the climate is warming faster than many of these species can keep up. In addition, we face threats from invasive species that can readily tolerate shorter, milder winters and longer summers. That’s where assisted migration of species comes in, the idea being, to give a forest a head start on its future climate. Can we help our ecosystems adapt by creating resilient landscapes and choosing species that are predicted to be more tolerant of our future climate?

The term assisted migration is a general term used to describe a wide range of activity from moving a population within its historic species range to moving wildlife to where it has never existed before. One example is in Vermont where foresters are introducing a variety of Red Spruce, chosen for its origins in the mountains of West Virginia, which is where Vermont’s predicted climate is headed. Advantages and Disadvantages

The assisted migration concept has been debated for over a decade as there are many challenges and opportunities that could arise (Handler et al., 2018).

Opportunities from assisted migration include

 •  helping maintain ecosystem function where species are declining.  •  helping maintain forest productivity under climate change.  •  provenance data is already available for many species which could help managers make decisions about performance of seed sources from outside their area.  •  “life boating” a species that is at critical risk.  •  ensure that a species occurs in many redundant locations across a range of conditions.

These issues have a practical application for forest restoration projects. Historically when choosing plant species for restoration projects the goal has been to source seed and plants from the local provenance of the native species. But with the climate quickly warming, some local genotypes (the genetic makeup of an organism) may not be adapted to future climate conditions. The question then becomes, for land managers, how do we choose appropriate plants for resilient landscapes, and how do we make management decisions?

Luckily, I don’t have to answer that question because there are many resources we can use to help plan for climate change adaptation. Whew!

Resources

One resource is simply using predicted changes in plant hardiness zones to determine what species might be appropriate into the future. The USDA plant hardiness zones are the standard by which we can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. Zones are based on the average annual minimum winter temperature. By 2070, locations in southern New Jersey are predicted to be in zone 8, allowing some southern species that previously could not tolerate our cold winters to thrive.

Another practical tool is the Natural Areas Conservancy Forest Identification and Restoration Selection Tool. This “plant palette” tool for the NY metro area takes you through a dichotomous key to define your forest type and then proposes a restoration plant palette ranked in tiers from highly to less resilient to disturbance and climate change.

Another resource is the Northeast Regional Invasive Species & Climate Change (RISCC) Management Network which aims to reduce the compounding effects of invasive species and climate change. Their “Management Challenges” two-page documents synthesize the current state of knowledge for example, “Nuisance Neo-natives: Guidelines for assessing range shifting species”, and “Gardening with climate smart natives in the Northeast.”

Two resources focused on trees are the USDA Climate Change Tree Atlas and NJ Forest Adapt developed at Rutgers. The Climate Change Tree Atlas can help answer a range of questions concerning current and projected suitable habitat for many tree species in the eastern United States.

NJ Forest Adapt is more specific to New Jersey and provides access to mapped information on the status of New Jersey’s forests, present and future climate and other forest health stressors to aid land managers in adaptation planning.

The Climate Change Resource Center is a web-based, national platform that connects land managers and decision makers with usable science to address climate change in natural resources planning and management. The focus is on forests and other ecosystems, and you can spend hours getting lost among the library of tools.
