We all agree that Caleb would be a great teacher, and would be very well liked by his students. But no professor is universally beloved or teaches in a style that’s compatible with everyone. I wanna know what Caleb does that students complain about. What’s in character for him that makes him not the perfect professor for every student?

He’s a fair grader, and he wants to ensure that everyone actually understands the material. He does not grade on a curve. Ever.

Not only is attendance part of your grade, so is “class participation” what exactly this means or how its set is a bit unclear, especially in larger class sizes. With that in mind, he like smaller class sizes, if you are in his class, you Will Talk, and will not be able to sit quietly taking notes for the whole time.

His classes are mostly a mixture of lecture and discussion based. He loves student participation. That being said, he has a tendency to get kinda off topic in class, and a lot of the actual theory is in the assigned reading. If you don’t do the reading, you will be extremely lost in discussion and you will not pass.

He is invested in his students and always open for office hours. Because of that, you will sometimes go to his office with a simple clarification about the homework that shouldn’t take more than a minute, and leave two hours later wondering how you left with your abjuration homework done and a new recipe for green bean casserole.

Is he the kind of teacher that bases your grade mostly off of only a few assignments?

Does he assign a lot of homework?

He has high expectations for his students, which can be great, especially with the support to actually meet those expectations, but he’d be really frustrated with those few students who Just Don’t Care.

If the technology were available, he would not use powerpoint and he would go too fast to get perfect notes. He gets excited.

He will often assign writing assignments. He does not like grading writing assignments.

He will sometimes assign random homework that was not in his lesson plan in the middle of a lecture because an idea just hit him and wouldn’t that be a great way for the students to get a deeper understanding of this topic? This homework will be graded. He will not forget that he assigned it. You might.

Some Professor Widogast thoughts:

So, you know about how weird it is to see a teacher outside of a school setting? That’d definitely be a thing with the Academy students, but at least for most of the Professors it was at normal places like the market or at Balls or whatever. Not Caleb, though, or well yess also then but also other times.

Like you’re a fancy rich kid, you go to fancy wizard school, and you’re doing a rebellion by sneaking out to this underground club with these crazy new age bards and a bar and a fight ring. You feel so badass and then you get there and your Transmutation 101 teacher is there, drunk, getting playfully grinded on the left and right by a purple tiefling and a married halfling that’s husband is dancing on her- and you just leave. Just right away. You don’t even have time to notice Expositor Lionnet trying to get to second base with her wife right behind them.

One student is from a prominent land owner in the Zemni Fields, their family goes to Blumnethal’s festivals to set up stands to sell wares and have a good time. They go to a fight pit that they hear is really cool, they have a keg stand and everything, and they get there and their teacher who’s pushing 40 and teaches their ‘Advanced Components 205’ every Wednesday is doing a keg stand, being held upside down by a blue tiefling and a half orc dressed like they stepped out of smut book with a sea theme, while two scary looking lesbians and and Halfling in sundress cheer him on. And when they let him down, the whole group immediately jumps into the fighting ring and destroy the competition even though the Halfling looks like they are too drunk to see and none of them are in decent gear. The group gets bored right away, start a three way shoulder war/chicken fight, which goes to hell right way because they all try to cheat. The Monk has their Professor in some sort of leg lock when the student’s father drags them out.

A student’s family goes on summer vacation to Nicodranas. To their horror, they find out that Professor Widogast and his friends don’t believe in bathing suits when they go to the beach.

The best part? Everytime something like this happens, nobody believes it.

So is caleb a fulltime wizard buster now, or is he still teaching at the soltrice academy? Cause if he is, the speculation among his students has got to be fucking insane. Like imagine if every single time your nerdy, soft spoken, beanpole of a calc professor went on a two month leave of absence, another high profile war criminal gets thrown in jail. I would be losing my mind.

living for the idea that whenever professor widogast puts in sudden notice for “sabbatical” and it gets mysteriously fast-tracked by archmage becke, the members of the assembly start getting flighty. meanwhile the underground student-led betting ring takes off

i love the idea of guest lecturer caleb widogast upgrading to associate professor at the soltryce academy and constantly stepping on other professor’s toes with his lessons

and of course this upsets at least someone with political influence in the empire (headmaster, volstruckers, the assembly, king dwendal). nobody expects a single mage from blumenthal to put up any trouble - he doesn’t have anybody backing him, not in any truly important sense, they can silence him without causing too much fuss.

except caleb widogast is one of the most popular professors in the academy, by a considerable margin. he’s a fair grader and even when he’s proselytizing about the dangers of blind nationalism and the importance of critical thinking, his lessons are really interesting. he’s one of the few professors who actually seems invested in the wellbeing of his students, and if you’re having a hard time, he’ll take the time to sit down with you and figure out a solution

(also sometimes he brings his cat to class and that’s the perfect balm for stressed-out students prepping for exams)

and that’s how caleb’s enemies find out the hard way that he has a surprisingly large following of radicalized students devoted to keeping him around as long as posible
