The Great Debate: Prescription Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses?
Tumblr media
The Charm of Prescription Eyeglasses
Ah, prescription eyeglasses – they're not just for seeing clearly; they're a fashion statement, a personality enhancer, and sometimes even a superhero disguise (Clark Kent, anyone?). Here's why many people are team glasses:
1. Style for Miles
Prescription eyeglasses are like the ultimate accessory. With countless frame styles, colours, and shapes, you can change your look faster than a chameleon changes colours. Feeling scholarly? Pop on those thick-rimmed beauties. Going for a cat-eye flirt? There's a frame for that too!
2. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy
When it comes to maintenance, glasses are the low-maintenance friend in your life. A quick clean with a microfiber cloth, and you're good to go. No solution, no inserting, no "Is that dust in my eye or my lens?"
3. Eye Protection Like a Boss
Prescription eyeglasses aren't just about looking good – they're your eyes' personal bodyguards. They protect your peepers from dust, wind, and those pesky UV rays. It's like having sunscreen for your eyes!
4. Budget-Friendly in the Long Run
While the initial cost might make your wallet weep a little, prescription eyeglasses are often more cost-effective in the long run. With proper care, a good pair can last for years. That's a lot of bang for your buck!
5. No Touchy-Feely
For those who get the heebie-jeebies at the thought of touching their eyes, glasses are a godsend. No need to poke and prod – just slip them on and off like a pro.
The Appeal of Contact Lenses
Now, let's not throw shade at contact lenses. They've got their own fan club for good reasons:
1. Invisible Vision Correction
Contacts are like the ninja of vision correction – they do their job without anyone even knowing they're there. Perfect for those who want to show off their natural eye beauty or just don't dig the glasses look.
2. Freedom to Move
For the sporty spices out there, contacts are a game-changer. No worrying about glasses flying off during your touchdown dance or fogging up during your mountain climb.
3. Full Field of Vision
With contacts, your entire field of vision is corrected, not just what you see through your lenses. It's like having superhero vision without the radioactive spider bite.
4. Weather-Proof Vision
Rain, snow, or shine – contacts don't care. No more wiping off raindrops or dealing with foggy lenses when you step into a warm room on a cold day.
5. Makeup Magic
For the beauty gurus, contacts allow you to showcase your eye makeup skills without frames getting in the way. Smokey eye, anyone?
So, Which Team Are You?
Choosing between prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses isn't always a clear-cut decision. It's like trying to pick a favourite child – sometimes you love them both for different reasons!
Consider your lifestyle, your budget, and most importantly, what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Maybe you're a glasses person during the week and a contacts person on the weekends. Or perhaps you rock your glasses 24/7 because they make you feel like a sophisticated genius (even if you're just binge-watching cat videos).
Remember, there's no rule that says you have to choose just one. Many people keep both in their vision correction arsenal, switching it up depending on their mood, outfit, or activity.
At the end of the day, the best choice is the one that keeps your eyes healthy and your vision clear. So whether you're team glasses, team contacts, or playing for both sides, make sure to get regular eye check-ups and follow your eye doctor's advice.
After all, your eyes are the windows to your soul – so make sure those windows are crystal clear, whether they're framed by stylish glasses or enhanced by invisible contacts!

Straw hat women redesigns :) I was trying to doodle some of the crew and came to the realization that I just Could Not with Nami so I wanted to play around with it a little bit
Some more design notes below:
Nami’s design actually went a lot smoother for me than Robin’s! I think canon post timeskip Nami is a very low bar. While you can argue that to some extent Nami being vain and seductive is part of her character, I do feel that there are many more integral parts of her character that can be highlighted in her design, namely map making and her combat. Though not one of the stronger straw hats, Nami does seem to be well practiced with her staff outside of its use for weather manipulation, and I think her being a physical combatant, even slightly, can be better reflected with more loose clothing for better mobility.
For her mapmaking, I wanted her to have constant easy access to her tools and to information about the locale, so around her waist she has one large pouch at the back for books and scrolls and maps in progress and one small pouch to the side for writing utensils and measurement tools. As backup she also has 2 pens in her bun, which also act as pins for keeping her hair up if she ever needs to move a lot.
I’m not sure how clearly it shows up in the notes, but Nami’s shoe soles are also made from whatever artificial cloud material makes up the weather island she stayed on during the timeskip, so that it both pads her steps to make them soundless and bounces for better mobility. The shoes are naturally shaped like heels but without the actual heel, since she tends to move around on tiptoes anyways- a nod to her epithet as cat burglar and her past as a thief.
I made her shoulders a bit broader because I think they probably get a lot of exercise with her staff, and changed out the bikini top for a more supportive chest wrap, with a loose tank over it for breathability. The compression socks and sleeve are more stylistic than anything, since I like layers, but they might come in handy for her if she spends extended amounts of time sitting down making maps for the crew.
Robin’s was a bit more difficult for me to figure out, and I might go back and revisit it at some point. For Nami, it was a bit easier to imagine what would pair well with her combat methods and her needs as a mapmaker, but with Robin, she’s an academic who fights almost completely hands off, without a specific weapon to her name. Because her strength lies mostly in her devil fruit, she has a bit more room for style over functionality, but I also still wanted her to have something that made sense with what she was. I don’t really think I succeeded in that regard, but it’s also hard to convey what she does visually— she’s more of like a professor than a field archaeologist I think.
I really really enjoy her cowboy hat but I didn’t think it would match with the rest of the outfit so I switched it out for a wider brimmed hat and kept the orange sunglasses on it, as a nod to the revolutionaries with the combination of headwear and eyewear. She deserves a trench coat. I don’t make the rules. And the rest of the fit mostly came down to things I think I would enjoy wearing, haha
The trench coat is partially a nod to the scholars of ohara, who seem to wear white coats like lab coats in some screenshots of robin’s backstory. I think also the reading glasses help to make her seem a bit more academic, but aren’t prominent enough to leave a strong impression. All in all I do wish robin’s design had more functionality in it but I also think that robin is a character who probably enjoys dressing up nicely like this, especially in the comfort and stability of the straw hats.

Could I request Scott summers x reader with a similar eye mutation. The reader has a gorgon mutation and can turn people to stone, and they meet/ bond over not being able to see properly, eventually getting into a relationship.
A/N: I love this idea! It's so sweet! Tags: just sweet fluff with a shared understanding
A Shared Burden
Tumblr media
The sterile walls of the X-Mansion medbay felt like a cage after the chaotic awakening of your mutation. Professor Xavier had explained the X-Men, a sanctuary for mutants like you. But 'sanctuary' didn't quite describe the prickling anxiety that crawled under your skin after Beast's in-depth examination of your petrifying gaze.
Hank had loaned you a pair of mutant specialty eyewear. It was a revelation that dawned on you now. You'd never be able to take them off with turning someone into a slab of concrete; or at the very least, controlling your deadly eyesight.
The door creaked open, revealing a tall man with a kind smile. "Hey there," he said, his voice gentle. "You must be (Y/N). I'm Scott, Scott Summers. Cyclops is fine too."
You offered a weak smile. "Nice to meet you, Scott. Though I wouldn't exactly call turning people to stone a mutant power you'd advertise in the brochure."
He chuckled, a sound that eased the tense knot in your stomach. "Yeah, well, Hank can be a bit… thorough. But hey, at least you get a cool codename out of it. Any ideas?"
You shrugged, a touch of self-deprecation tinging your voice. "Haven't really thought about it. Maybe something Gorgon-related, considering I turn people to stone with a glance. I mean, Medusa would be way too cliche."
Scott's smile softened. "Your power… it's tough, I imagine. But you're not alone. We all have things to deal with here." He gestured towards his head, the unspoken reference clear.
A silent understanding bloomed between you. Scott knew what it was like to live in a world where you had to be constantly on guard, where your very nature made you an outsider. There was a shared burden in his gaze, a quiet empathy.
"How about we get you settled into your room?" Scott suggested, his voice warm. "Maybe tomorrow we can start figuring out how to control your… uh… petrifying gaze."
The following days were dedicated to navigating your mutation. Scott, ever patient, was your guide. You practiced focusing your gaze, not on turning things to stone, but on dampening the overwhelming sensory input that triggered your power. He understood the struggle to keep your emotions in check, the constant battle to avoid accidentally turning someone into a statue.
Slowly, with Scott's steady support, progress came. You actually did learn to somewhat control the intensity of your gaze, to filter the world through your special glasses that dampened your mutant sight but allowed you to function.
One evening, after a particularly grueling training session, you and Scott found yourselves on the balcony overlooking the X-Mansion grounds. You leaned against the railing, a comfortable silence settling between you. The setting sun cast a warm glow on the world, a world you could only perceive through a muted lens.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Scott said softly, his gaze fixed on the horizon.
"They say it is," you replied, a tinge of wistfulness in your voice.
Scott turned to you, a sincerity in his voice that resonated with you. "Maybe someday you'll see it all, (Y/N). But for now, you have something just as valuable."
He reached out, his hand hovering near yours. You mirrored the gesture, the space between your fingers tingling with unspoken emotions. "What's that?" you asked, a whisper that carried on the cool evening breeze.
Scott's smile, though unseen, was evident in the way his eyes crinkled at the edges. "Understanding. You're not alone. We both carry burdens, burdens that make us different, but also burdens that connect us."
In that moment, amidst the muted colors and the filtered light, you felt a warmth bloom in your chest that had nothing to do with the setting sun. You realized, with a jolt, that the hours spent training with Scott weren't just about mastering your power, they were about finding solace in shared experiences. The man beside you, with his unwavering support, was a beacon in a world that often felt isolating.
Weeks turned into months, and your bond with Scott deepened. You found comfort in his quiet strength, in the way he understood your struggles without needing words. You learned to communicate through subtle gestures, stolen glances, and shared laughter. One crisp autumn evening, as you sat by the window, a comfortable silence settling between you once more, Scott spoke.
"We may not see the world in the same way, (Y/N), but we see each other. And that's all that truly matters."
His words, laced with a quiet sincerity, sent a shiver down your spine. You met his gaze, a spark of understanding dancing in your own eyes. Perhaps you didn't need to see the world perfectly to find beauty. Perhaps the most vibrant colors existed in the warmth of shared understanding and the quiet promise whispered in the space between. As you leaned closer, the world blurring at the edges, you knew you had found a connection that transcended sight.

Well shoot.
Last year I got some Pair Eyewear for my Vegas trip. I liked them enough except for one thing; I got them in single-vision when I really needed progressives which were WAY more expensive. So when I got back from my trip I sent them back.
This year I saved up and decided to get them again but with my own prescription and the extra $199 for progressives. I got them today and don't remember the frames being so heavy? That and I started to get a wicked headache in my left eye, AND I feel like the frames are shorter, I keep getting distracted by the bar above my eyes.
Is it possible they got the Rx wrong? Or am I just so used to my old glasses and I just need to get used to these?

Nickel Bin #16:
Gillian Welch's City Girl
Tumblr media
My devotion to the Dollar Bin finds much of its origin in my distaste for the fashionable present.
Why consider cutting edge eyewear when the glasses I splurged for in 1999 still work great thanks to the screw I recently harvested out of a pair of give away sunglasses? Why lust after Shakey's big new $800 Archives III box when my 92 cent copy of Trans alluringly beckons? Why consider the compellingly fresh titles suggested by the New York Times Book Review when a garage sale copy of No Name, Wilkie Collins 900 page follow up to 1860's fabulous The Woman in White, which zooms in on a ravishingly beautiful female master of disguises who is seeking to overthrow the tyranny of pre-Victorian era marriage and inheritance laws, graces my nightstand?
And why, oh why, should I write about Gillian Welch's new record, which my famous brother tells me is AMAZING, when I'm still grooving to the mammoth bootleg collection they put out a few years back?
After all, check out City Girl. People have taken the time to listen to this song 17 thousand times on YouTube in the past 3 years; that's only 3.4 Billion plays less than T. Swift's remake of Shake It Off (I don't even want to know how often that song's terrible original has been enjoyed by the masses).
But City Girl is amazing! Buried at the tale end of Lost Songs, a Covid-era collection of 40 (!) never before heard, rushed through originals Gillian and Dave Rawlings completed over 20 years ago to fulfill and then jettison a music publishing contract, City Girl sports a Tom Petty-ready chord progression, an arena-ready chorus and a grinningly obvious declaration of feminine independence.
youtube
The whole things sounds almost nothing like a Gillian Welch song in that it is so simple and straight-forward; she and Dave could have taken this song straight to Nashville, added a rhythm track, keyboards and a dull guitar solo and had themselves a hit.
Instead they recorded it once privately and never touched it again: too easy to play, they figured. Too commercial!
I'll get into their new record; I really will. But first I'll give Lost Songs a few more plays and finish No Name. I gotta find out how Magdalen Vanstone and Captain Wragge hoodwink Noel Vanstone's domineering housekeeper.
And along the way you won't catch me becoming the 1.41 Billionth listener to Shake It Off: I ain't no city girl.

Corrective Eyewear: The Importance of Corrective Eyewear
Corrective Eyewear and Why You Should Check Out Papaglasses.com
Have you ever struggled to read the fine print on a menu or squinted to try to make out street signs in the distance? If so, you're not alone. Millions of people worldwide experience vision problems that require corrective lenses to see clearly. In this blog post, we'll explore the necessity of corrective eyewear and why you should consider papaglasses.com for your next pair of glasses or contact lenses.
Understanding Vision Problems
Vision problems can arise for various reasons, including refractive errors, age-related changes, and underlying health conditions. Refractive errors are the most common cause of vision impairment, affecting how light enters and focuses on the retina.
Myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism are the three primary types of refractive errors. Myopia occurs when light focuses in front of the retina, causing distant objects to appear blurred. Hyperopia is the opposite, where light focuses behind the retina, making nearby objects appear blurry. Astigmatism results from an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, causing distorted or blurred vision at all distances.
The Importance of Corrective Eyewear
Corrective eyewear, such as glasses or contact lenses, is essential for individuals with refractive errors or other vision problems. By correcting the way light enters and focuses on the retina, corrective lenses improve visual acuity, reduce eye strain, and prevent potential complications associated with untreated vision problems.
Improved Visual Clarity
The primary benefit of corrective eyewear is improved visual clarity. Whether you're reading a book, working on a computer, or driving, clear vision is crucial for productivity, safety, and overall quality of life. Corrective lenses ensure that light is focused precisely on the retina, providing sharp and crisp vision.
Reduced Eye Strain and Headaches
Uncorrected vision problems can lead to eye strain and headaches, particularly when engaging in visually demanding tasks for extended periods. By wearing corrective eyewear, you alleviate the strain on your eyes, reducing fatigue and discomfort.
Preventative Measure for Future Complications
In some cases, untreated vision problems can contribute to the development of more serious eye conditions or exacerbate existing ones. For instance, individuals with uncorrected myopia may be at a higher risk of developing retinal detachment, glaucoma, or cataracts. By wearing corrective lenses, you can help prevent or delay the progression of these conditions.

Thanks for tagging me, @onewingedsparrow! 💙
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? Dnd campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!
I don’t exactly have files, but I do have a ton of ideas sitting in my notes—most of which I won’t mention because I’m more than a little protective of them. I also won’t tag as many users as I have ideas since I’m not buddy-buddy with that many people on here. Lol
Feel free to ask about more than one of these. (Even followers and mutuals I didn’t tag!) I’m eager to share:

the evening hadn’t gone quite the way she would have willed it to had she had the power. there’d been no mass sweep of the awards by selene or by mirae herself. she’d won an award for a cover she’d been proud of, but a cover that had taken far less of her effort and commitment than any of her original songs or all of the work she’d put in with gentle monster for their eyewear collaboration. selene had taken home a vocal award and mirae herself had taken home an acting one for squid game, but both had felt like a given on reputation alone — selene’s as a vocal powerhouse and squid game as a massive success.
she’s not fed so much into her own hype that she’s let it get her down, though. she’d fared no worse than any other awards show the past season, really, and numbers and attention speak for themselves regardless of whether she takes home another award to line up on a shelf or not.
it’s a night for celebration — of another year of successes and progress and hard work —, so she lets herself alight with the energy of the party, flitting from group to group with a smile and a bubbling excitement to be in the midst of so many people she knows and the industry she’s come to call her home.
in a sea of laughter and gossip, the absence of a smile doesn’t go unnoticed and her eyes land on minjung when she’s engrossed in a group of other idols she sort-of, kind-of knows, several minutes before she slips away from them to show up at minjung’s side.
“if it isn’t the woman of the evening. best album and best song — that must sweeten the night, huh?” she grins wide and warm. “watch out for next year, though; i’m coming for those titles if i’ve got any say in it.”

Movie Review | Hideout in the Sun (Wishman, 1960)
Tumblr media
Let me ask you a question. How do you film a bank robbery on the cheap? Do you, I dunno, show the inside of the bank? Maybe have a character go up to the teller and hold them up? Have somebody in a security guard or police uniform? Maybe fire off some squibs, or at least point a gun? Or some panicked extras for colour? No, you do none of those things because all of them take time or cost money. What you do is have one of your leads walk into and out of a nondescript building, and have his accomplice pick him up in a car and drive away, while sirens and alarm bells ring on the soundtrack. It’s like jazz, it’s the bank robbery you don’t see. Some would call this movie magic, and some would call this the Doris Wishman touch.
Hideout in the Sun was Wishman’s first movie, preceding the much better known Nude on the Moon. Like that one, this is firmly in nudie cutie territory, and in that sense, I suppose it’s a success as there are plenty of nude people here and some of them are pretty cute. (However, this is definitely a case where the women are better looking on average than the men, many of whom can be charitably described as schlubby.) Nudie cuties were how people managed to see nudity onscreen before outright pornography. The rules are as follows: boobs and butts, yea. Bush, nay. (And the latter still holds. Hey-o! That’s a political joke for you.) What this means is that the characters looking away from the camera will be fully nude for your enjoyment, while the ones facing the camera will other be in convenient poses or wear unexpected articles of clothing (at one point, a group of women approach wearing aprons). There are also some cute birds here, including flamingos, parrots and an emu, which leads me to believe that this might not really be a country club and a bunch of people decided to go streaking in a safari park. It’s also worth noting that this club doesn’t seem terribly secluded, yet you don’t have crowds up people lined up at the periphery trying to get a peek. This is surprising as it was a lot harder to see nudity at this time, given that it had only been invented a few years prior.
The plot here involves the two brothers who pulled off the bank robbery kidnapping a woman and going with her to hide out in the nudist club where she has a membership. This is an ominous beginning as the brothers’ choice of eyewear brings to mind Henry Kissinger, who is one of the last people you’d want to see in the nude. (Or in government. Hey-o! That’s another political joke for you.) Quite frankly, I’m not sure either one of them has ever been nude before in their life. The more adventurous brother decides to step outside with the woman while they both enjoy any number of leisure activities in the buff, while the more wound up brother stays inside, sweating profusely and going through packs and packs of cigarettes in mere hours. (The more adventurous brother is usually seen only from the chest up, leaving me to assume he’s either dangling wildly or pointing right at the camera at any given moment.) There actually is a pretty interesting tension here between the open air pleasures of the nudie cutie taking place on the club grounds and the claustrophobic noir playing out inside the cabin. Things come to a boil when the bad brother, the one who still feels shame about his body, tries to make off with the spoils of the robbery to the Miami Serpentarium. This is about the worst possible place you can make a getaway, but it means that the climax consists of a goofy mix of tense jazz and reptile closeups. Also, it turns out the good brother’s name is Steve Martin.
I’m not gonna bother rating this by boring normie standards, although I’ll note that it’s a bit more engaging than Nude on the Moon by virtue of having things like tension and narrative progression. (If I recall correctly, characters in the latter movie praise this one as a good time at the movies.) And for a Wishman movie, there’s a surprising amount of sync sound, with people daring to move their lips while facing the camera. The sunny Florida atmosphere is not unpleasant to bask in, and there’s something maybe a little sweet about it’s belief in the power of love. As the great Huey Lewis once said, it’s a curious thing.
