today on the way to work i listened to The Dark Side of the Moon. i enjoyed it, but i'd like to listen to it without the stress of driving so i can look at the lyrics at the same time. but i was still wondering what your thoughts on the album are :)
One of my all-time favorite albums 🌑
This is one of those records that's always praised as one of the greatest albums ever made, even outside of the progsphere, but honestly it deserves all the accolades just for being such a timeless piece of art. For me this was also the exact moment when Pink Floyd just fucking nailed it as a band, and the start of what I think are the band's four greatest albums all back-to-back (Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall)
It's actually an album I often recommend to people who are interested in getting into the progressive rock genre, since the concept of it is so universal and it's just very pleasant to listen to overall. I won't go into a deep dive on each song here since I assume you would prefer to form your own opinions during your next listen, but I am very glad to hear you wanted to share your first listening experience with me ✨
#asks#music#pink floyd#prog rock#my favorite tracks are time and the great gig in the sky#but generally when I'm listening to dark side I'm listening to the entire album in one sitting#I would def recommend listening to it again w/ headphones next time#the lyrics are so beautiful they really deserve to be appreciated outside of a car ride

JOHN PETRUCCI: Drummer Change “Could Potentially Be Dangerous for a Band’s Future”
Guitarist John Petrucci of progressive metal veterans Dream Theater was interviewed on the October 25 edition of The Classic Metal Show, which is heard live on Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. EST at TheClassicMetalShow.com. You can now listen to the chat using the Spreaker widget below.
Asked if there was anything he wished Dream Theater had done differently in the way they went about finding a replacement for original Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy in 2010, Petrucci said: “There’s not many situations in life where you can say you wouldn’t have done anything differently, but this is one of ‘em. I think, looking back, I wouldn’t have done anything differently.“
He continued: “Mike Mangini really helped us to get through a major bandmember change, and in a way, that was probably as smooth as any bandmember change could have gone. The way that he came in, his personality, his skills as a drummer, his background, his history… it clicked to the point where it was, like, if we would have met Mike [Mangini] twenty years ago, we would have been playing with this guy. If I would have grown up with him, I would have been friends with him jamming. And that’s rare. It’s rare to do that one time around.“
Petrucci added: “You know so many musicians in bands that are having trouble finding people to play with, and who click, and so the fact that this happened with Mike [Mangini], it’s really just amazing to us. And since he’s been in the band, we’ve done two albums, two world tours and, thankfully, have had a lot of success with it, and a lot of support from our fans through all of it. And, again, I wouldn’t have done anything differently. It’s really amazing.“
Petrucci also spoke about the fact that Dream Theater risked losing some of its diehard audience by moving on without one of its key members. “That’s always a risk, of course,” he admitted. “People generally don’t like change, and in this situation, Mike [Portnoy] was a major member and a major voice in the band and people really loved him, so that change is something that could potentially be dangerous for a band’s future. But I think that we sort of embraced it, and it ended up paying off, was that we kind of moved forward in a very positive way, saying, ‘Listen, the best way to deal with this situation is to move forward in such a way where we make, in our minds, an undenable musical statement.’ Because, at the end of the day, it’s about the music.“
He continued: “We’ve had other bandmembers before, we’ve had people leave, we’ve let people go, we’ve had changes, but if the music is always strong and it’s true and it’s genuine, then that’s what it’s all about. And we kept that… that was right in the forefront from the get-go — from before we went into the studio, into the studio, when it was being mixed, and everything else. And at that point, you just put your faith into the music, and thankfully, and, I guess, surprisingly, in a pleasant way, our fans showed us a level of support that you can only dream of. And that helped us through the whole thing, and we’re so appreciative of that.“
Petrucci added: “I’ll never forget not only the album coming out and getting a great reaction, but playing the first shows — listerally, the first ones with Mike [Mangini] I remember playing in Italy and such — and the response and reaction from the crowd was so welcoming, it was really kind of overwhelming. And it could have went the other way easily. But, I think, with all those things in mind, and our attitude, and our fans’ acceptance, it proved to be a positive way to move on.“

11. Yeah yeah this is the long song genre, so what are some of your favorite prog rock epics and why are they so important to you?
Three that immediately come to mind for me are "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd, "Supper's Ready" by Genesis, and "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" by Van Der Graaf Generator
Pink Floyd means so much to me, and their songs were basically my introduction to prog rock epics. "Echoes" is also high up there for me because of how beautiful it is but Shine On holds a very special place in my heart. Every time I listen to this song now my mind goes back to pleasent teenage memories of listening to it on my dinky ipod nano headphones in the early morning, or on windows media player while watching the psychedelic light show the program creates alongside the music
Supper's Ready is just a goddamn classic through and through. Not only do I pride myself with how I can sing the whole song by memory, but also I still get endless amounts of enjoyment watching the Shepperton Studio's live performance of it from 1973 (I can watch Peter Gabriel's antics forever I swear <3)
A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers is easily my favorite narrative song of all the prog epics I've heard, as in it tells a cohesive story from beginning to end. Lyrically it's just so well-written and engaging, switching from dark to beautiful to panic-inducing at all the right beats! Also the Belgian TV broadcast they did of this song back in '72 is something I watch more than is probably healthy for me lol
12. Is there a band or album you feel is overrated?
I honestly can't think of a specific band or album that I feel is given TOO much attention in the progsphere, but that's probably because I'm wise enough not to actually engage with any of the forums in Prog Archives. I just really can't get annoyed with even the mega popular prog bands because so few people online and irl talk about them with me that even hearing someone proclaim In The Court of the Crimson King to be the best album ever gets me excited
22. What is the weirdest goddamn prog song you've ever heard?
"Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" is pretty high up there, not gonna lie XD
#asks#music#prog rock#thank you so much for yelling at me to make this ask game#hope these answers are satisfactory ;)

Pervy Perkin is a new name on the progressive scene, hailing from Spain’s capitol Madrid. Jokingly (or not), they consider themselves as one of the bands of the New Wave of Spanish Prog scene. The band released their debut album titled Ink in March this year, a sonic journey comprised of 16 compositions clocking in at almost 200 minutes. That’s quite an achievement for a band that have just started to break new grounds.

So, you think you'll get bored during the holidays, all thot time lost while waiting for the next diner or souper or cocktail or whatever they'll call those gatherings of overconsumption, all those hours wasted with fretting to find the right present, those awkward moments after forgetting your cousin's chlidren's names, not to mention the seething rage after being dealt with a ludicrously humiliating present. Here's the remedy, 79 freely downloadable tracks of prog rock and affiliate head-melting sounds. A goldmine worth hours of music and years of crafts being honed to perfection. Now, if you find perfection boring, I'll suggest you go outside in the freezing cold, sprinkle water on your bare nuts and let them freeze on the nearest lamp post.

salam Prog
