Late afternoon stained glass projections on gothic arches, Washington National Cathedral, 8th December 2004.
Posting this to celebrate an amazing month of music with more to come. Yesterday we were awed by a presentation of Handel's Messiah (written as a musical offering for the Easter season, but worth hearing in December) in the National Cathedral. The oratorio was written for theater performance, but it is well suited to the acoustic of the cathedral. That followed a Friday concert by the Folger Consort playing my favorite composition for the holiday season, Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Messe de minuit pour Noël. In addition there have been several fantastic concerts at the Library of Congress with two more to come before the holiday.
We finished yesterday with a celebratory dinner at Le Piquette, our favorite bistro in DC, and I enjoyed a well-prepared cassoulet, the second best I have had outside of France. [For those resident in the PNW, Cafe Campagne in Seattle's Pike Place Market serves the absolute best, a delight of a quality I would expect at a good bistro in France]. It was an amazing weekend in the midst of an amazing month.

Crowley scowls. “Angel, if I hear ‘Nimrod’ one more time, I won’t be responsible for my actions.”
“Tum tee, tum tee, tummmm te, tum tee tum,” hums his Adversary, in time to the sound of the train. “Rather good, that one — though I grant, a smidge overplayed. But Heaven doesn’t want another set of character sketches from Elgar. Heaven wants him to do an oratorio. A proper one. An hour and a half of morally-improving music on the Judgment of the Soul.”
“Your lot can want Eddie to write a five-act musical performed on the flying trapeze. Naked. Just leave me out of it.”

Burdens you all more with my unsupported headcanon that Hollander is Genesis' father and not Angeal's
A happy family! While working on Project G, Hollander and Gillian's short lived relationship ends, and Hollander quickly rebounds with an assistant, Hosannah Oratorio. Soon she is expecting, and she offers her child to the experiment. Just several months later, Gillian, with her new partner, is also expecting.
Unfortunately, Hosannah suffers health complications; Genesis is delivered early, at the cost of his mother's life (her last word is her son's name), and is hailed as the first living experiment of Project G - but Hollander finds himself concerned mostly for Gillian and her child. As Gillian and the child's father call it quits, Hollander tries to win back her affections - but Gillian can already see Hollander isn't giving his own son his entire attention. The only reason Gillian would consider reuniting with Hollander would be for little Genesis, but he and her own baby would not be raised under a united roof.
Despite this, Gillian delivers her son, Angeal, healthy and without complication. But shortly after, Project G is shelved, and Gillian ends up in Banora with Angeal, and Genesis is given to foster parents in the same town, leaving Hollander with nothing but memories of Hosannah and Gillian, and it isn't until years later that he is reunited with his son, and the boy he wishes was his son. The boy of the woman he worshipped.

So, does the fact that Anti-Outrage technology exists imply that this may be connected to their Sacred Treasures relationship to Gears?
It has more to do with current technology being developed in Illyria than anywhere else.
Jack-O’ was quick to point out that this technology is almost exclusively Illyrian in origin, so it is easily traced.
Most OutRage were built by Sol, that much is obvious, though the Conclave put most of the Jinki parts under their custody, it’s not unreasonable to assume they tried many means to research and reverse engineer the technology, though only Asuka has been known to successfully do so.
That said, the technology Nerville’s group is using appears far more advanced, almost as if they had some blueprints from another time and place…
Still, it is also evident that they forced researchers to develop the technology in secret, only to kill them when they served their purpose.
Aside these, former Pope Ariels claimed to develop Anti-Backyard technology, which far eclipses the concept of the OutRage as Anti-Gear deterrents, which is part of the connection to the Cyprus Project, which Elphelt got her weapons from.
Anti Gear weapons in the hands of Gears sounds like a scary notion, but it’s more common than the public may come to realize.
Even the armor Justice once wore is OutRage-make, as part of the Saint Oratorio Project, in research of Magic Particle Physics (Sol’s field of expertise).

Ok what would Asuka do if he woke up with amnesia
Y'know, it's funny because Asuka is actually one of the only characters who does have memory loss! As a part of his revitalization method, which involves de-aging his body, he loses memories that have to be re-inserted into his mind via memory vessels. Normally, Raven is around to make sure it doesn't go awry, I believe. Unfortunately, the Best Friends Gang shattered to pieces...
Vaguely, I have the sense that Jack-O or Raven would still hear about his amnesia and restore his memories. They don't work for him, but at least Raven is his friend.
However, let's say Asuka gets bonked on the head one day and gets a full reset. No memory! I feel like, if anything, he'd subconsciously feel as if he'd been relieved of his burdens. However, his curious personality would cause him to search for his own memories, and he'd eventually find himself weighed down by his fairly considerable sins. There's only so much to do on the Moon.
If Asuka forgot the plot of Guilty Gear, he'd be momentarily happy. He isn't very good at communicating though, and his lack of friends means he would probably have trouble telling anyone about his amnesia. Eventually, he would try to seek contact. If he meets a version of himself, the situation is solved.
Asuka would probably try to find his friends, and the only survivor there is Sol Badguy. He'd probably recognize him, given he recognized Happy Chaos as his teacher and Sol's transformation is less drastic than HC's, and try to reconnect.
I think Sol would punch him on sight. After figuring out that this is Amnesiac Gear Project Nerd Asuka, he'd probably still be mad at him but he'd feel awkward about it. After all, it's not like the Asuka who forgot the Crusades is all that far from the Asuka who stole Aria and turned Frederick into a Gear.
I think Asuka would be like "How interesting! You finished the Saint Oratorio project and you stabilized it into such a small vessel. That's rather impressive." and Frederick would say, "This is weird. Go somewhere else."

British Composer and Paul McCartney Collaborator Carl Davis Dies at 86
- “His enthusiasm was extremely infectious,” McCartney says
British composer Carl Davis, who scored silent films for the modern era and co-wrote “Liverpool Oratorio” with Paul McCartney, died Aug. 3 after a brain hemorrhage, his family said.
Davis was 86.
“We are so proud that Carl’s legacy will be his astonishing impact on music,” the family said on social media. “A consummate all-round musician, he was the driving force behind the reinvention of the silent movie for this generation and he wrote scores for some of the most-loved and remembered British television dramas.”
Davis’ music soundtracked the BBC miniseries “Pride and Prejudice” and accompanied previously silent films including 1925’s “Ben-Hur” and “The Phantom of the Opera” and Buster Keaton’s “The General” and Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights,” both from 1931.
“May Carl Davis rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
In 1991, Davis and McCartney collaborated on the “Oratorio,” which was the former Beatle’s first foray into classical music and a project he “enjoyed … very much.”
Davis “was a very skillful and fun man to be with,” a “very sad” McCartney said.
“His enthusiasm was extremely infectious and we had a great time during the period that we worked together.”

Domenico: "It never felt this cold in Piedmont."

"My friends, I would like to find out what it is that you are preparing for audition and we shall see what it is that we can do in order to make your audition a successful one. D'accordo?"
River: "I have absolutely no idea, but I have a few songs that I selected from a music store."
Domenico: "Fantastico...we shall prepare then. So who first is the student?"
River: "He goes first..."
Haruo: "Wait...what?"

"Now...we shall start with warming up the voice... You will perform the scales..."

"Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah..." "now...La..." "Author's Note: how can you tell I've done this before..." 🙄
My first recital piece was this happy little "fast number" by Handel.

I was a baritone like Bryn Terfel here. Haruo is a tenor...and I was always jealous of tenors because they got the "good stuff" other than "The Trumpet Shall Sound" which was the pièce de résistance of bass/baritone pieces in the oratorio/opera repertoire

Domenico: Now...you shall try some of your first piece. I shall show you how...to project your voice... like this...

...Tune...Tune your harps to cheerful strains...moulder idols, i-into-oo-oo-oo dust...moulder idols into dust..."

Haruo: "Great Jehovah lives and reigns...li-ives and reigns...We in great Jeho-vah trust. We in grea-ea-ea-ea-ea-ea-eat Jehovah trust..."

"Tune...Tu-une yo-our harps to che-er-ful strains...Mo-oulder Idols...i-in-nto-oo-oo dust...Mo-oulder I-i-dols in-to-oo dust.

Plucked to Perfection: The Harpsichord’s Vital Role in Early Music
Discover the Harpsichord’s Rich History and Its Central Role in Early Music—From Continuo Accompaniment to Solo Brilliance—and How It Continues to Enchant Audiences Through Historically Informed Performance Today.
— Nicole Garrison | May 06, 2025

A Flemish harpsichord by Andreas Ruckers the Elder, c.1640, beautifully preserved with painted birds and flowers, Latin mottos, and a later keyboard extension (‘ravalement’) reflecting evolving musical tastes © Christopher Gardner
The harpsichord, with its distinctive, bell-like tone and elegant appearance, occupies a central place in the history of Western classical music. As a defining instrument of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the harpsichord played a vital role in the development of early music, both as a solo instrument and within ensembles. Despite its eventual eclipse by the fortepiano and the modern piano, the harpsichord’s contribution to the evolution of musical language and performance practice remains profound. Its revival in the 20th century, particularly through the efforts of historically informed performance practitioners, has ensured that the harpsichord continues to charm and captivate audiences today.

An early diagram of a Vertical Harpsichord (Clavicytherium) by Arnault de Zwolle, c. 1430
Origins and Evolution
The harpsichord first emerged in the late Middle Ages, with the earliest known references dating back to the 14th century. By the early 16th century, it had taken on more recognisable forms, particularly in Italy and Flanders. Unlike the piano, which strikes strings with hammers, the harpsichord plucks its strings with quills or plectra—traditionally made from bird feathers—when the keys are depressed. This mechanism results in a bright, clear sound, though without the capacity for dynamic variation based on finger pressure.

Throughout the Renaissance, the harpsichord evolved in both form and function. Italian models were often lighter in construction, producing a more delicate tone suited for intimate settings. Meanwhile, Flemish makers such as the Ruckers family developed instruments with a richer resonance and more powerful projection, setting new standards for craftsmanship and tonal quality. By the Baroque period, the harpsichord had become an essential component of musical life across Europe, particularly in France, Germany, and England.

A Linchpin of Continuo Playing
One of the harpsichord’s most crucial roles in early music was as a continuo instrument. The basso continuo, or thoroughbass, formed the harmonic backbone of most ensemble music during the Baroque era. Typically, a harpsichordist would read from a bass line with accompanying figured bass notations, realising harmonies extemporaneously to support melodies played or sung above.
This practice gave the harpsichordist considerable creative responsibility. Far from simply "filling in chords," continuo players were expected to shape the harmonic texture, provide rhythmic vitality, and respond dynamically to the musical context. In chamber music, operas, oratorios, and sacred works alike, the harpsichordist’s role was pivotal, often guiding the ensemble and underpinning its musical coherence.
youtube
In orchestral settings, particularly in works by composers like J.S. Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, and George Frideric Handel, the harpsichord was frequently used in conjunction with other continuo instruments such as the cello, viol, or theorbo. The combination provided a rich, multi-layered foundation that allowed upper voices to soar while maintaining structural integrity.
Solo Repertoire and National Styles
Beyond its role in ensemble music, the harpsichord flourished as a solo instrument, inspiring a wealth of repertoire that showcases its unique character and technical possibilities. Early keyboard music from the English virginalists—composers like William Byrd, John Bull, and Orlando Gibbons—exploited the harpsichord’s capacity for intricate counterpoint and ornamentation. Their compositions, often compiled in collections such as The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, remain seminal in keyboard literature.
In France, a distinctive style of harpsichord music emerged, closely linked to courtly life and the aesthetics of the French Baroque. Composers such as François Couperin and Jean-Philippe Rameau wrote richly ornamented suites and character pieces that emulated the elegance of court dances and conveyed subtle emotional nuances. The French harpsichord tradition emphasised expressive phrasing, stylish embellishments, and a refined sensibility that became synonymous with the instrument.
youtube
Meanwhile, in Germany, composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons brought the harpsichord to new heights of contrapuntal sophistication. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and Goldberg Variations are towering achievements in keyboard music, demonstrating the instrument’s full expressive range. The Italian school, represented by figures such as Girolamo Frescobaldi and Domenico Scarlatti, contributed works of bold virtuosity and rhythmic invention, the latter’s sonatas in particular showcasing the instrument’s capacity for rapid scales, hand crossings, and dramatic contrasts.
The Harpsichord in Opera and Theatre
The harpsichord also featured prominently in early opera and theatrical music. In recitatives—passages of sung dialogue or narration—it was often the continuo instrument of choice, providing harmonic support and dramatic impetus. Composers such as Monteverdi, Cavalli, and Handel relied on the harpsichord’s clarity and agility to follow vocal inflections and shape the dramatic pacing of a scene.
In the pit orchestra of 17th and 18th-century theatres, the harpsichordist often served as the maestro al cembalo, effectively leading the ensemble from the keyboard. This dual function as both performer and director highlights the instrument’s centrality to the coordination and interpretation of early operatic performance.
Decline and Disappearance
By the late 18th century, the harpsichord began to fall out of favour. The emergence of the fortepiano—capable of dynamic shading and greater expressive range—captured the imagination of composers and audiences alike. With the rise of the Classical style, epitomised by figures such as Haydn, Mozart, and later Beethoven, the harpsichord came to be seen as an outdated relic.
youtube
Instrument makers gradually ceased production, and harpsichords were discarded or repurposed. Much of the repertoire written for it was either forgotten or adapted for piano. For nearly a century, the harpsichord languished in obscurity, its legacy preserved mainly in libraries and private collections.
The 20th-Century Revival
The harpsichord’s revival in the 20th century owes much to the early music movement and the rise of historically informed performance. Pioneering musicians such as Wanda Landowska reintroduced the instrument to concert stages, often using modernised harpsichords built with steel frames and piano-like mechanisms. Although these instruments differed in tone and design from their historical predecessors, they were instrumental in rekindling interest in harpsichord music.
Subsequent performers, including Gustav Leonhardt, Trevor Pinnock, and Ton Koopman, championed the use of authentic period instruments and historically appropriate techniques. This shift brought new vitality and scholarship to the interpretation of early music, reshaping how audiences and musicians engaged with Baroque repertoire. Instrument makers such as William Dowd and Frank Hubbard began constructing harpsichords based on historical models, further enriching the field.
Today, the harpsichord is firmly re-established as a vital part of early music performance. Conservatoires and music festivals worldwide support its study and appreciation, and it is once again heard in the context of solo recitals, chamber music, and opera. Contemporary composers, too, have begun to explore its unique sonorities, writing new works that expand its expressive possibilities.

With the OutRage becoming a topic again (even as a gameplay mechanic) and Norimitsu Kaiho returning to the fold to contribute more to the GG lore, I hope that we finally get some details about Slayer's Sacred Treasure and the 8th unknown Jinki in Season 4. Though, I'm probably being a bit too optimistic there.
People were suggesting that the Jinki references in Team of 3 are just Username Fillers, but they also featured various items including a Chimaki Doll that players could throw at their opponent team, so I can't really predict how things will go (even if my prediction rate has been at least 80% at this rate, hahah).
They might turn Team of 3 in to the next phase of M.O.M. Mode (Medals of Millionaires) for all we know, so there's a LOT of possibilities.
To the best of our knowledge 8 of the OutRage were created by Sol himself (Slayer's dagger included), while the Justice Armor is technically something Asuka built (and let's not forget the OutRage logo that was once on Dizzy's Gear Seal Ring back in the GGX days, along with the OutRage Gearplant Tanks).
There's a lot of the mystery they have yet to approach, even the OutRage's connections to Saint Oratorio, the so-called "Ultimate Spell". Even the Cyprus Project has yet to be fully explained.
Well, even if they don't do much in the way of adding additional info in the main game, there's still plenty of possibilities in the upcoming Anime to anticipate, and I have no doubt that Norimitsu will cover some serious bases (as he's been known to do so prior to this).
For now though, we can only guess and hope that things will get better in the future~
