Today’s achievement included finishing Astrid’s axe! The more invested I got in this cosplay, the more I wanted this as a prop. But it was a scary undertaking, because I had never built a weapon like this before. Or any sort of prop, really. Just my Iron-Man gauntlet and my brother did most of the patterning for that. But then I realized that I had a bamboo base from a fallen-apart witch’s broom that was the perfect size and I sorta just... went for it! In the end, I am wildly proud of it and what I was able to accomplish, even if it’s not perfect and totally beautiful. I definitely learned a LOT in working on it, and as always I know a million ways I could have improved on it, but overall I’m totally smitten with it and can’t wait to wield it at a con. . . . The best part of the whole thing? The only thing I bought new for it was the nut and bolt that connects the handle to the head (because it can be taken apart for travel!) which I spent about 96 cents on. Otherwise everything - the foam and paint and fur and ribbon and fake suede and everything else - was stuff I already owned and had in the house. . . . With the axe done, it officially means it’s time to jump fully into my armour - because 22 days is enough time to build it all, right?! Drew up a template last night for the design of a Kingdom Key from Kingdom Hearts! I kind of want to start selling props as well as faceshells for Spiderman! Would anyone be interested!? I cannot stress enough how important it is to use the correct and appropriate safety gear when doing any number of projects!! In this video I'm wearing my mask, safety goggles, and (although you can't hear it) the ventilation is on!!! When I step out of the room, for my part to dry, I tuck a towel under the door to help prevent fumes getting into the bulk of the house. Also- not all masks/filters are made equal. Please invest in the one that is appropriate for the work you will be doing! A $30-$100.00 purchase is far cheaper than medical bills down the road.
