alright, first things first, i gotta introduce you to my three brand new rescue teams!
Red Team Gooseberry: Duck the Psyduck & Chikorita (no name) Blue Team Fireflower: Leif the Bulbasaur & Cinder the Cyndaquil DX Team Epoch Spark: Tori the Torchic & Sparky the Pikachu
all of the teams ended up having some kind of interesting thing to them for Gooseberry, i don't think i've ever played as a Psyduck before and i neglected to give Chikorita a nickname for Fireflower, i chose Cyndaquil over Torchic as my partner here because i love both Bulbasaur and Cyndaquil a lot as starters and thought it would be nice to have my two faves together and for Epoch Spark, funny enough, from the quiz I actually got Psyduck again, but since this is a newer PMD game I had the option to freely choose as well. and after much deliberation, i decided on Torchic and thought it would be kind of funny to have my partner be a Pikachu - i purposefully chose her species, gender, and name because my very first PMD team had the protagonist as a girl Pikachu. and choosing Torchic was not just a gut decision, but also to 1. round out the protagonists' types and 2. to reference the human-turned-pokemon in the PMD manga Ginji's Rescue Team which i love and cherish dearly
anyway, i started by going through the first dungeon of the game and getting our rescue team formed, and here are some of the things i noticed between the old and the new:
first, i should mention the quiz, or more specifically the pokemon selection screens. i do find it very funny that all the pokemon are just jimmying around wildly, but it also was. just a lot of sensory input. i will give it credit where it's due - it is a lot more interesting than just selecting from a list! but i do feel like Gates and Super had it better with a literal rotating cast rather than a chaotic cloud of bustling lil guys
what i thought was interesting out the gate was the fact that barely any of the text in-game is altered. it's the exact same dialogue for most of the time, with the exception of a few additional scenes not present in the old games, like a partially verbalized tutorial and when you put on the scarves as a uniform for the rescue team - which, by the way, was super cute
speaking of text, i don't know what exactly my reasoning is for being against it, but i find the little speech bubbles in dungeons to be really annoying. it's a fun idea conceptually to have more of an inner monologue as you roam around and fight and stuff, but having something to say every time you fight or get attacked is just… too much. i didn't see an option to turn them off but i kind of hope there is one and i just didn't see it
there is a pretty steep mechanical difference between the two that is very evident when playing them side-by-side. DX is mechanically very similar to Super, and given that i haven't touched Super in a few years it took me a while to remember that this wasn't completely novel and in fact something i had to get used to before. and also while i knew the movesets got more beefy and diverse as time went on in the franchise, i forgot just how robust the movesets you get out the gate are nowadays. back in the day, Pikachu knew exactly what it would in the main series games at Lv. 5: Thunder Shock, Growl, and Tail Whip. but now, in DX, my Pikachu knows Fake Out, Electro Ball, Grass Knot, and Iron Tail! like that's insanity!! and you can't even use a basic A-button attack anymore, but that's one of the things you're immediately taught in Blue/Red! it's gonna be a weird thing to juggle back and forth, i think
i noticed there was a "Random" button when making the rescue team name, and i absolutely love it. i only went through a handful of choices but they were all really good and fun and some in particular were very silly. it was very charming i will say, though - the default was "Efficiency" and it was so incredibly close to my first team's name "Electricy" (bc Electricity was too long to fit) and it really threw me hkjjk
after listening to all three iterations of that handful of sound tracks at the beginning, especially for Tiny Woods, i still feel like DX missed the mark somewhat. i will say that the version heard in Red was closer, but it's still very well mixed in Blue. DX just has issues with the relationships between timbres and between instruments' dynamics, as i've heard in a couple of its other OST remakes. it's not as offensive in person, but it's still a bit too over the top
one of the reasons i hesitated so much on getting DX was because of the aesthetics. it's radically different from any previous PMD game, and evokes kind of a storybook feeling. playing it for myself now, as far as i've gotten, i'm not the most into it, but i do appreciate it. i think my main issue is that it feels kind of unpolished and also quite cramped. the 3d renditions of 2d spaces just feels very small, and the 3d games before this didn't have that issue at all, so i feel like it's either to do with the dev team being different than previous installations, or more than likely it's just because they're struggling to adapt something from the past rather than coming up with environments and scenarios wholecloth
i do find it kind of incredible and amusing seeing the progression of how games have changed in the last 15 years, like seeing a language select at the top of Rescue Team DX, and the fact that it autosaves so it doesn't need to include the tutorial scene in the original that teaches you to go to bed to save. i just think that's really neat :3
i think that's it concerning the first impressions. overall, i'm actually most fascinated by what hasn't changed than what has. i would have expected an updated dialogue beyond adding scenes for the more modern demographic of PMD players instead of what is essentially a copy-paste from the original games. and i know it is copy-paste because i Just read it twice over in both Red and Blue just before booting up the new game! idk if that's a bad thing, but it's strange to me that it is so unaltered. i dunno, my feelings so far are mixed, but i've only just gotten started, so we'll see what comes next!

Black 2 Water Run update! So I had to go make dinner after my last post right after getting Lutri (the oshawott) and doing the Starter Fight against my rival. Decided to play a little more pokemanz before bed tonight.
Every time a start a new pokemon run through I pray for the day gamefreak lets me skip being taught about pokemon centers and catching pokemon and whatever. The Tutorial Stuff for Black 2 is thankfully on the lighter side though, just a quick "here's nurse joy, here's the mart" then later a quick pokemon battle and capture instead of spending 20 minutes narrating every step of the process. I wish I could opt out for a further hands off experience but have to begrudgingly admit this is a game meant to be accessible to 8 year olds..
Anyway, beat up some patrats, not able to catch any cause they're not water types :( fought my rival again. Lutri's starting to get the taste for grass snake. Wrong mustelid! You're an otter! and pet the assorted mareep at the ranch. I love they're call so much, it's very gen 2, but is warm and cute
Then I encountered my second water type! A psyduck popped out of the grass and I caught him real fast. I deviated from the name scheme I had in mind (based on scientific names when possible) cause none of the family, genus, species for various ducks really fit well to me. THEN I decided to look into info about rubber duckies and learned about the largest rubber duck sculpture, so meet Florentijn the Psyduck, named after the dutch artist responsible for the largest rubber duck sculpture, Florentijn Hofman.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I think that's a good spot to end for the night. Hopefully I don't run into a wild Mareep here, or at least not until I've leveled Florentijn a bit, getting paralyzed by static and hit by thundershocks will be real rough for my team rn

Poke-Principles of Animation 01: Timing Timing is about controlling how long each drawing of an animation is held on the screen. More drawings does not always equal better animation! Oftentimes putting an animation on 3s (8fps) can give a motion a heavy and deliberate feel.
This is why professional animators often believe that artificial AI in-betweened animation takes away deliberate choices made by the artist creating the scene.  The heart and soul of 2d animation is that it is a medium where every fraction of every second of what ends up on screen is a conscious decision made by a team of artists.

It's been a lot of work over a lot of time but I think I can finally share this...
PMD:EoS, but with all of the starters!
Tumblr media
...Including Grookey, finally!!!!! 🥳
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Introducing PMD: Expanded Sky!
This is a public mod available to download now! It adds in all starters from unova all the way to paldea, as well as zorua, axew and rockruff, and allows evolving eevee into sylveon.
Speaking of which, fairy type has been patched into the game! Disarming voice replaces milk drink and moonblast replaces judgement, which was unused.
Some non-traditional starters are no longer available as hero options in this due to lack of space, but are still available as partners. (Skitty can be chosen as a hero in version 1.0.0 only, so download that version instead of the latest if you wanna use her! Riolu and Shinx are available in version 1.2.1 and below)
If one of your faves was taken off the hero roster (eg vulpix, skitty, riolu, munchlax, etc), I have a tutorial here on how to quickly edit the patched file to put them back in :)
Several regional variants have been added! Alolan Raichu, Alolan Marowak and Hisuian Typhlosion are now available as potential evolutions for their respective base stages.
Tumblr media
Partners across both rescue team and all three versions of explorers are available too, including Cubone, Munchlax, Machop, Vulpix, Riolu, etc
Sprites and portraits are courtesy of the brilliant PMD Sprite Repository and the many incredible artists who contribute to it!
Credits for all improvement patches, sprites and portraits are included in the download, as well as an explanation on how to patch the game and the full starter list.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The mod is split in two versions to accommodate all the partners - MIDDAY version and MIDNIGHT version. The download includes both, as well as the tool required to patch your game! You'll need a clean US copy of pmd eos at hand.
Tumblr media
A full list of moves learned by newly added Pokémon can be found here, as well as info on how to evolve them and their IQ groups.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you run into any issues, feel free to drop me an ask or DM and I'll see how I can help/what I need to fix!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can find the download for this rom hack here!
Edits/updates noted under the cut:
(27/04/23)
The overall mod now has a name - expanded sky! Reflected earlier on in the post.
I've been informed that the included patching tool (XDelta) doesn't work on mac, and after some digging around and discussions in dms we found this tool works for Mac instead.
Added graphics to the post displaying which heroes and partners are part of the hack.
(11/05/23)
Added link to learnset compilation for all new pokémon.
(17/05/23) Version 1.1.0 has been released!
Sobble is now a starter, replacing Skitty (Skitty is still accessible by downloading v1.0.0 on the download page). Sobble is also now a partner in MIDNIGHT.
Zorua/Zoroark's moveset has been tweaked slightly
Base forms of all new starters can now be found in Oran Forest, and can be recruitable in the post-game. The new fire starters can also be found in Giant Volcano.
Extra portraits and sprites were added for Cubone, Psyduck and Machop. Like the rest of the new assets in this mod, these were imported from the PMD Sprite Repository, and credits are on the title screen and in the readme.txt.
Extra credits + more in-depth instructions for patching the game included in the readme.txt.
(18/05/23)
Added a link to a tutorial on swapping out heroes for others already existing in the game.
(22/05/23) - Version 1.1.1 has been released!
Fixed genders for female starter options on the quiz. Updated Fuecoco to use new portraits and sprites. (Credits to Garbage)
(23/05/23) - Version 1.1.2 has been released!
Female starters from gens 5-9 can now evolve correctly (save for starters who don't have evolutions in the game yet - these are listed in the text file in the download)
Rockruff can now evolve, and Midnight Lycanroc's evolution method has been fixed to use the Lunar Ribbon as intended.
(15/06/23) - Version 1.2.1 has been released!
In 1.2.0, a second version of the mod was included in the zip compatible with melon emulator, and potentially others that were having issues with saving.
Fairy gummis were also made available as mission rewards and shop items.
There's a couple more things that can be seen in the changelog including bugfixes, but the main other thing promised was that Froakie and Litten can now evolve directly into Greninja and Incineroar. Due to an evolution flag not being set this ended up untrue, but has been fixed in 1.2.1.
This post claimed dazzling gleam is in the game, but it should've said disarming voice.
🆕 (10/03/24) - Version 1.3.0 has been released!
Dusk Lycanroc, Drizzile, Inteleon, Grookey, Axew and Fraxure have been added, as well as Alolan Raichu, Alolan Marowak an Hisuian Typhlosion.
Axew replaces Shinx in the hero roster, and Grookey replaces Riolu. Additional portraits and sprites added for starter evolutions, including vanilla starters. Sleep animations have been copied over to EventSleep/Laying/Wake animations if missing.
Greninja erroneously had the same moveset as Froakie. This has now been fixed.
Credits are no longer displayed on the title screen.
Sprite, portrait and patch credits can now be viewed by talking to a Cyndaquil NPC on the crossroads.
Evolution help can also be accessed by talking to this same NPC.
🆕 (23/05/24) - Version 1.3.1 has been released!
The uhh. Grovyle problem. Yeah. That should be fixed.
(Grovyle was missing several sprites as a side effect of trying to add new ones, due to his unique setup in the vanilla game as such an important npc. His sprites should now be reverted to a functional state, rather than leaving him to walk fowards on the spot all the time).
An issue present from the start that caused the game to freeze while advancing floors in dungeons occasionally should now be resolved.

So I’m going to battle the Elite Four later and I just realized I went this long without mentioning what my team is! Here it is:
Louis the Skeledirge: The starter, obviously! As I said before, I named him after the alligator from The Princess and the Frog. As with all starters, he’s the team leader. Relaxed nature and highly curious. Current moveset is Torch Song, Shadow Ball, Thunder Fang and Flamethrower. He’s holding the Choice Scarf.
Babe the Oinkologne: The tutorial catch. Named after the titular pig from the movie Babe. Doesn’t get to see battle much, but he’s a valued member of the team nonetheless. Sassy nature and somewhat stubborn. Current moveset is Trailblaze, Uproar, Body Slam and Headbutt. He’s holding the Leftovers.
Gerald the Spidops: Did not expect to love him as much as I do. He’s currently our highest level Pokemon PURELY by accident. Very cool, though still a bit frail. Modest nature and quick tempered. Current moveset is Bug Buzz, Skitter Smack, Giga Drain and X-Scissor. He’s holding the Quick Claw.
Ferdinand the Golduck: As much as I love Psyduck, I’d never used one in a Pokemon game until now. Ferdinand is also named after a character from Babe, specifically the duck who was scared of becoming Christmas dinner. The special attack specialist. Quiet nature and mischievous. Current moveset is Surf, Psychic, Ice Beam and Aqua Tail. He’s holding the Wise Glasses.
Crossgills the Clodsire: Big round boy who also acts as our powerhouse against Electric and Fairy-types. Best friends with everyone on the team. Hardy nature and somewhat stubborn. Current moveset is Earthquake, Sludge Wave, Rock Slide and Poison Jab. He’s holding the Black Sludge.
Flamiga the Flamigo: The face of destruction. Ruthlessly mows down every living thing in her path because she’s literally too stupid to know what the word “mercy” means. Her Scrappy ability means that even Ghost-types cannot escape her deadly grasp. Quiet nature and alert to sounds. Current moveset is Air Slash, Close Combat, Air Cutter and Low Kick. She’s holding the Scope Lens.
And of course, Koraidon. He can’t battle yet, but he’s our bike and he loves sandwiches!
What do y’all think? :3

What's the dynamic between Akari and Cyan in Hisui?
I'd like to think that they'd still end up bonding! Akari meets Cyan pretty early on, right around when you get your first crafting tutorial. It's a pretty brief encounter because he's preoccupied at the moment, but Rei mentions offhand that he's a Warden of the Pearl Clan. Cyan is just like 'huh, new villager' and only later hears from Irida that she's another skyfaller.
Akari is... intimidated by Cyan at first, because again... he does not emote. at all. But she's also very curious about the blue Psyduck trailing after him, and he's extremely happy to tell her all about his friend! Yeah, his color is really unique! I found him in the Fieldlands one day and he just kind of followed me home.
They talk about Pokemon, and Akari probably picked Oshawatt here, bc you know... water type. Cyan loves his water types. He gives her some advice on how to lure the more skittish Pokemon to her, which really helps with her Pokedex. He's pretty upset later when he hears that Kamado put her to work quelling the Nobles- that's a child?
I'd like to think that instead of being gifted the crafting recipes as your reward when you gain a star, or buying them from the shop, Cyan teaches them to her. He's good with his hands, and he thinks he used to work with things much more complex than this. Also he teaches her how to use Lord Braviary to skydive. Did I mention he likes skydiving? He likes skydiving.

I’m doing my second play through and here are more brain stuffs
I really like how Geeta is written! The dichotomy of her being this mythological figure to the public but a mediocre at best boss to the gym leaders is really cool and realistic! I like how they delved into what champions actually do instead of leaving her a mysterious figurehead for the region like most of them are.
I finally caught a shiny after all this time! It was a psyduck.
So you know how in my first run I only lost one fight and it was to Larry? Yeah I got my ass handed to me by a toxel in this run. I really wanted to catch it cause I’m doing a poison types + my starter team and it would not stay in the ball cause it was level 20 and I had just finished the tutorial.
They had no business making Turo that fuckin hot I hate this. THATS MY BEST FRIENDS FATHER

Do you know anyways for stuffing/sewing? I've been wanting to fix up my eeveeltutions and get them restuffed, but I'm not too great at sewing and I don't want to damage them either. It doesn't seem possible to do in the store either so I'm kinda at "a rock and a hard place"
To close up a plush, the best stitch is a ladder stitch or "hidden stitch." (Same stitch, it just has 2 names.) You can find tutorials on YouTube that will show you how to do a ladder stitch. It's pretty easy!
Also, if you open them up and take them to BaB they should restuff them for you. I unstuffed my psyduck because I didn't like the online stuffing and BaB restuffed it for me. Some stores won't touch them though, it's best to call and ask. If your store won't and you want to do it yourself, you'll want to buy a 5lb box of polyfil or a couple 2 pound bags depending on how many you have that you wanna stuff.
Once you have your stuffing, open them up by pulling the fabric apart on either side of the seam until you see the thick closing thread. Cut that thread. Then just pull the fabric open. When you put the stuffing in, pull it apart in your hands to fluff it up before you put it into the plush. You'll have to work it into the smaller areas, the polyfil should come with a "stuffing stick" that you can use for this, but any long object about the width of a pencil will do. Once you've added the amount of stuffing you want, sew the opening closed with a ladder stitch. :)

The Pokemon Scarlet Goofy Guy Run
The other night in a half asleep stupor while grinding tera raids in pokemon scarlet I had the genius idea to do a “Goofy Guy” run. A run where I was only allowed to use pokemon I categorized as “Silly Little Guys” in this very professional and scientific chart.
The next day I decided to begin the aforementioned run. Here is how Day 1 (Yesterday/March 22, 2023) went.
~~~
Day 1:
Day one was very slow, mostly because I was exhausted and playing on a lazy day. I sped through all the dialogue and tried to get through the tutorial as fast I could. I chose Fuecoco as my starter and named him Chumblo. On Poco Path I caught Pork Bowl the Lechonk, Finley the Fidough, Peenis the Psyduck, Wumbo the Wooper, and Markiplier the Magikarp (As well as other pokemon that just got sent to the boxes.
I sped through Poco Path, kicking Nemona’s ass on the way, and got to the school. I beat the shit out of the Team Star Grunts and officially started school. I talked to Arven, Nemona, Clavell, Sada, and Cassiopea to start all my quests.
Eventually the opening sequence ended and I could finally play freely. I ran around town gathering supplies then set out to the Katy’s gym. On the way I caught Gumby the Gimmighoul, an unnamed Smoliv that I will (probably) add to the team at a later time, and Mac n Cheese the Tandemaus. Once I reached the gym and talked to Nemona about the deal with gyms, I set the game down for the day because my switch was about to die.
Day 1 Stats:
Path of Legends: 0/5
Victory Road: 0/8
Starfall Street: 0/5
Team: Fuecoco, Wooper, Magikarp, Lechonk, Gimmighoul, Tandemause.
